What Does Salicylic Acid Do To Your Skin?
In a battle against breakouts and acne, there are a few skincare ingredients that show great results, and Salicylic Acid is one of them. Crowned as a key ingredient in many skincare products, Salicylic Acid is best known for its ability to fight bacterias and acne.
What is Salicylic Acid?
This is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), a carbon-based organic compound. San Francisco based Dermatologist, Caren Campbell explains that this compound occurs naturally in willow barks, fruits, and vegetables. BHAs are fat-soluble; they can make their way into the pores to unclog blackheads. Salicylic Acid fights bacteria, reduces inflammation, and also exfoliates skin.
Salicylic Acid can be obtained in many forms of over-the-counter treatments. You can often find them in cleaners, toners, creams, and much more. Over-the-counter products have a low percentage of Salicylic Acid. Their content ranges from 0.5% to 2%.
These products are the best choice for those who suffer from mild pimples and acne. They are effective against severe types of acne. One can consult a dermatologist and get prescribed products with a stronger percentage of Salicylic Acid.
Make sure you apply the product to your entire face and not just a small area. If you simply apply it over a pimple, it won’t help your skin much. It’s important to apply it over the entire affected area or your face. Applying it to the entire face will help the medication to penetrate into the skin to prevent any pore blockages or tiny blemishes.
OTC products may be the best choice to treat blackheads, bumpy skin and mild pimples. However, they will not give you the results you seek for more serious, inflamed acne breakouts.
Salicylic Acid is a key product that is used as a chemical peel agent. Salicylic Acid peels are stronger than the products you get over the counter. The strength of these peels ranges from 20% to 30%. They exfoliate your skin more deeply as compared to OTC products. They are beneficial in treating moderate acne.
The formula of these products is usually safe for all skin types and for other complexions as well. Research suggests that Salicylic Acid peels don’t cause hyperpigmentation, which makes them safer to use.
These peels cannot be done at home by yourself. They can only be done by a professional like a dermatologist or a spa. Salicylic Acid peels cannot be considered a sole acne treatment. For best results, they’re often combined with other acne medications.
However, it’s important that you consult your dermatologist before deciding which treatment is the best for your skin.
Possible Side Effects
Using too much Salicylic Acid on your skin can become a major problem. One of the most common side effects of Salicylic Acid is skin irritation. Since this ingredient works by making its way inside the pores, it can irritate your skin and dry the sensitive areas. This largely depends upon the percentage of Salicylic Acid in a product and on how often one is using it. Thus, it is recommended that if you have sensitive skin then you should hold back on using Salicylic Acid.
If you’re pregnant, taking certain medications, or even blood thinners, it’s best not to use it. You must be cautious when you use Salicylic Acid, applying it on a major portion of your body as it can lead to Salicylate poisoning. Hence, one must not go overboard and use it only on the acne-prone areas instead of layering it all over one’s body.
How to find the best salicylic acid products

Why pH of skincare products is important?
The pH is defined as the negative logarithm (base ten) of the concentration of free hydrogen ions in aqueous solution. The pH of skin surface ranges from 4.5 to 6 making it slightly acidic. The acidic nature of the whole skin surface was first claimed by Heuss in 1892; however, the first scientific study was carried out by Schade and Marchionini in 1928, who called it the acid mantle. The “acid mantle” protects the skin by inhibiting the growth of pathogenic organisms, regulating keratinization, desquamation and wound healing. Any disruption in the acid mantle disrupts the activity of enzymes involved in barrier function and anti-microbial protection. The skin pH and the buffering capacity of the skin surface are made up of the components of the stratum corneum as well as the secretions from sebaceous and sweat glands. Sweat is an important contributor towards skin acidity owing to its content of amino acid, lactic acid, and urea, which supplement skin NMF levels. The formation of stratum corneum barrier requires enzymes that are pH dependent. Two lipid-processing enzymes β-glucocerebrosidase and acidic sphingomyelinase require a pH of 5.6 and 4.5, respectively. An increased skin surface pH activates enzyme serine proteases, which causes degradation of corneodesmosomes and affects the skin barrier. pH also has a big impact on the skin microbiome. The bactericidal activity, because of dermicidin and nitrites in sweat, occurs optimally at pH 5.5. The resident bacterial flora changes as pH increases causing increase in population and activity of P. acnes and Staphylococcus aureus which are responsible for acne and eczema. All these result in contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis, acne vulgaris and Candida albicans infections. Products with high pH cause swelling of skin follicles affecting the permeability of the skin making it dry, sensitive, and susceptible. Most of the skincare products are formulated within the pH range of normal healthy skin except the exfoliating products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s), Vitamin C products and chemical peel which work at low pH. Facial oils, cleansing oils, balms are not pH dependent.
My AM routine while rocking cherie merch!
@cheriethanks for the cute sweatshirt! I am obsessed. Here is my am routine! sisley - FLORAL TONING LOTION First I tone and prep my skin with this toner. GRWM! New products and some old!
Hello everyone! I did another GRWM using some new and old products! First I started off with a primer. I used e.l.f. - Poreless Putty Primer I was actually really surprised by this. It reminded me of Tachas silk canvas primer. It went on smoothly and did a good job of blurring my skin. I will say though after I looked at my makeup in the mirror up close it did settle a bit into my pores and my creases and was pretty noticeable. Overall I think this is a good product and will work for people with smoother skin. e.l.f. - 16HR Camo Concealer Then I used the elf concealer. I love this concealer. I’ve used it so many other times in my other videos. WINKY LUX - Diamond Powder Foundation Then I used the winky lux foundation. This actually went on so nicely and was super natural looking. I love how it’s so weightless and decreases shine. I would recommend this for people with oilier skin. the CRÈME shop - "Macro Brow" Angled Brow Pencil + Spooley Then i used macro brow. This is just to fill in the last bits of my eyebrow to look fuller. It’s easy to use and has a great price point. I just wish the pigment was a little easier to apply. You have to push so hard. RITUEL DE FILLE - Rare Light Crème Luminizer My favorite brand of highlighters ever. Just so pretty and pigmented. All natural and cruelty free. An amazing brand overall. 💞 fresh - Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 I used a tinted fresh lip treatment. Love the way they hydrate and the subtle color it gives off. They also smell and taste really good 😂. Hope you enjoyed getting ready with me! Let me know if you have any questions about the products I used.
✨Cute Bun Hairstyle✨
Hi Guys!!! I recently saw this scrolling on Pinterest and I wanted to recreate it! It’s SO easy and took about 5 minutes total!! It looks so fancy yet it’s so simple! I have medium to thin hair but this can work on pretty much all hair types! (: (tip: spray texture spray beforehand) this helps it stay in better!)☺️ HOW TO: -I like to pull my bangs out first (: - you’re going to section it as if you’re doing a half up half down hairstyle -then you’re going to start twisting that part of your hair -I twist it around like I’m doing a ballerina bun😅 -then I secure it with a hair tie ❤️ -you can leave like that! Or I like to pull it out a little so it’s more loose!✨😊
