🧎🏼♀️Indie Lee: All Things Start From A Rare Brain Tumor
May 27, 2020
The founder started her eponymous brand after surviving a rare brain tumor in 2009. Learning that her beauty routine may have almost cost her her life, she had a newfound drive.
Ever so passionate about all-natural skincare, she decided to start her own brand. And after consulting a wide range of professionals, she introduced a new wave of innovative beauty products that aren't only chic but also non-toxic.
Her products are made jointly with scientists and use the most potent botanicals sourced from around the world to tackle certain skin concerns. Thus, "Grounded in nature. Supported by science. Inspired by life."
The core concepts of the brand were built around her brush with death. She values life a lot more, which is why she established "a community of like-minded individuals on the same journey of change. This brand is about empowerment, education and healthy living."
The Story Behind Indie Lee
A year before her rebirth, Indie Lee was growing edible flowers and starter plants in her South Salem, NY greenhouse. She was mostly supplying the local Whole Foods, and everything was going swimmingly.
That was until she got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in July. Suddenly, things became scary. But not as scary as she got when she had an MRI scan in November.
Finding out she has a rare brain tumor, she discussed her autoimmune issues with several specialists. Sadly, they all gave her six months to live. Her doctor then drew attention to environmental toxins, stating there's a huge probability that they're the culprit.
However, since she grows what she eats, she questioned this comment. Little did she know that although she kept what she put in her body green, she completely lost sight of what she put on her body.
That was when it hit her. Most of us aren’t aware of the ingredients in the skincare and makeup products we surround ourselves with. That's a terrible way to treat the largest organ of our body.
There and then, she knew she had to make an impact on the world. Her motive was (and still is) to help others live a healthier life through a variety of non-toxic beauty products. But that could only be possible if she survived her surgery.
Luckily, the tumor was removed successfully on April 22, 2009. She woke up with so much zeal, passion, and purpose, and decided to commit the rest of her life to create change. The Indie Lee product line was brought into being.
A little fun fact: Indie legally changed her name from Lisa Swengros to Indie Lee—a shortening of “Independent Lisa." She initially wrote a blog under this pseudonym while going through tumor removal. After treating her autoimmune disease, she's grown accustomed to the name. Even giving her product line the same name.
Moving on, she spoke with various experts before embarking on her life-changing journey. Dermatologists, cosmetologists, homeopathic physicians, aromatherapists, you name it. Even unscientific beauty lovers were included in her interviews. Couple that with her in-depth research into natural beauty products.
With enough insights and an innovative mindset, she sold all of her jewellery and started testing formulas with loved ones. Some candid feedback rolled in and as she got the go-ahead, the brand moved from her kitchen to a lab equipped with scientists.
The founder's dream became a reality, with Indie Lee offering a variety of eco-chic skin and body care products. These include moisturizers, oils, scrubs, cleansers, and balms. The first product to hit a home run was the Coconut Citrus Body Scrub, thanks to its soothing and eczema-fighting properties.
However, this wouldn't have been possible without her business partner, Rebecca. Indie originally brought her in to help market and sell the products. But she was so impressed by the potency and safety of the formulas that they became partners.
In January 2010, they incorporated the brand as Indie Lee & Co. Since then, Indie Lee has flourished into one of the best all-natural, indie beauty brands we have today. It's been an incredible run for the Leaping Bunny-certified brand.
Their products are available in-store throughout the country and online at Sephora, Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Amazon, etc. Indie has even been praised in reputed magazines such as Self, Shape, and People Magazine.
Seriously, if you're looking for a product line that's safe and sustainable, look no further than Indie Lee. This brand really cares about the earth, and that's evident through their safe, eco-friendly practices.
In June 2017, Ancora Investment Holdings added Indie Lee to their portfolio of authentic brands that they plan to expand internationally. It was a win-win. Indie was raising funds while Ancora had been looking for beauty, health and wellness brands to invest in.
"We are excited to work with people who are uncompromising in their vision and ready to take that vision to the next level. People like Indie Lee."
The brand is still committed to clean beauty, with emphasis on style and sustainability. If you're after all-natural ingredients packed with skin-saving nutrients in your beauty regimen, keep an eye on Indie Lee. Enjoy fast-acting formulas that work wonders for all ages and skin types.

Clear skin the gentle way?
Thank you @cheriefor this amazing gift 🤩 “buh-koo-chee-all” HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum I’ve already become a diehard Herbivore lover. So to receive this beauty was super exciting. When I started my acne journey on Cherie I was (and still am) a Differin Acne Gel stan. This was my choice of retinol and I wanted it strong to treat acne and boost my cellular turnover. Now that my acne is currently under control and it’s getting hot again, I definitely want something smooth and gentle. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative to the very popular ingredient retinol. So essentially you’ll get overall youthful results for your skin. I haven’t tested this on my acne theory yet, but overall my face has been smooth and irritation free. This serum does not have a smell which I love for products of this caliber. I also love that it’s light and not drying at all. I use this at night and since i have a tolerance to retinol I use it every night. I haven’t been using it long enough to see results (about 12 weeks) but I definitely can’t wait to finish this. Have you tried Bakuchiol?
A Journey of Self 🌹
I figured Black History Month was as good as any opportunity to talk about my self finding. Growing up in a small yet old family, I always had questions about my roots and family history. I also struggled with self conscious doubts about my appearance. Why is my nose this big? Why is my hair this curly? Why am I taller than average? These weighed heavy on my mind growing up because honestly, sticking out sucked. So, I finally dove deep into my family’s origin and decided to do an Ancestry DNA analysis. I immersed myself with every corner of the site. I only got the chance to finish my maternal grandmas side of the family tree, but even that has plenty of gaps. Yet, when I received my DNA results I was stoked. Then I realized, I don’t know much about any of these places. So I dug even deeper. I have a little journal of things I’ve learned and want to know, but this was quite the experience. It was heartbreaking and satisfying at the same time. I highly recommend for every race and background to do this DNA Test. The best part of this was scrolling through photos of the people of the respected countries I was DNA matched to. I swear I saw a girl who looked like me, but everyone else thinks I’m tripping lol. In the end, I’m satisfied with my results and findings. Relatively speaking, this way of self discovery has been the most effective.
At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚
