Shakeup cosmetics, like Cherie, is changing this narrative. At Shakeup, the mission is simple: offer everyday men easy-to-use cosmetic products with unique formulas, specifically designed for men’s skin. Men and women's skin differ in many ways, most notably in the fact that testosterone stimulation makes male skin 20-25% thicker than female skin. Thus, products for men simply can't be formulated the same. Though their product line is small (for now,) their presence and tenacity are mighty. This is one indie brand you'll be seeing for a very long time.

Ingredient Breakdown: Peptides
Ingredient Breakdown: Peptides
Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids, imparting bounce and firmness. But collagen can be broken down by free radicals (hello, oxidizing fragrance/volatile essential oil compounds), smoking, UV rays, and age. Age contributes to collagen loss also because your body makes less collagen peptides after some time in your 20s. Topical collagen-containing products don’t work, as collagen molecules are too big to pass through the epidermis. Instead, use peptides to help it act younger and make more collagen! Peptides (also made up of amino acids) are small enough to get to the dermis where collagen is made. In response, skin should start making more peptides to form more collagen. Copper peptides are considered particularly beneficial, though the main benefit over normal peptides is their wound healing capability, making them wonderful for those with acne, on top of their anti-aging benefit. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer contains 9 varieties of peptides, including copper peptides, as well as a variety of amino acids, fatty acids, and humectants. I love this gel-cream, it’s wonderful as a multifaceted moisturizer that is light enough for oily skin and helps fight signs of aging. PAULA'S CHOICE - Peptide Booster contains 8 peptides, amino acids, fatty acids, and a variety of humectants. No copper peptides, instead incorporating a variety of antioxidants, helping to contribute to the calmness of skin and prevent free radical-induced breakdown of collagen. An amazing anti-aging serum with a texture that sits between creamy and silky, sinking in quickly and giving my skin quite a bit of plumpness. This would be the best of the bunch for a multifaceted anti-aging peptide product. The Ordinary - "Buffet" + Copper Peptides 1% contains seven peptides -one of which is a copper peptide- plus a variety of amino acids and hyaluronic acid. It’s a simple yet effective serum that is a bit tacky and smells of metal, but the results are worth it. Applying it to a scab/large acne lesion nightly speeds along its healing noticeably- plus I see less hyperpigmentation develop afterwards. I can’t recommend this enough as a budget-friendly entry into peptide serums!
Battle of the Face Cleansers
Battle of the Face Cleansers
My skin type is combo oily that can lean more dry during the weather changes or just randomly. My skin concerns are acne, oiliness throughout the day and also dehydration. I’ve ranked the face washes I currently have open right now based on how they worked for me personally (starting from favorite). My all time favorite is COSRX - Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser because I can actually tell a difference in my skin, unlike the other cleansers and can be used AM and PM. . COSRX - Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser Key Ingredients: Tea Tree and Beta Hydroxy Acids (work together to refine pores, control oil, and soften skin). Texture/Consistency: Gel that turns to foam Scent: Very strong Tea Tree scent Price: $14 for 5.07 oz Experience: I use this as my AM cleanser and it does a good job of removing the previous night’s skincare and having a new base for my AM skincare. It foams a lot, so only need a small amount of product. Since I’ve been using this, my face has gotten more smooth and not as oily throughout the day. I knocked off a star since the scent is so strong of tea tree. Repurchase/Recommend?: I will repurchase this and recommend this because it’s a great value and only need a small amount of product. My combo oily skin also agrees with this formula, I’m so excited to use it this summer and see how and if it helps my skin. . MARIO BADESCU - Glycolic Foaming Cleanser Key Ingredients: Glycolic acid (exfoliates the skin and dissolves dulling dead skin cells to help refine pores and retexturize uneven skin), and a soothing blend of chamomile, marshmallow, safe, St. John’s wort, and yarrow extracts (work together to provide additional rejuvenating benefits that help re-balance and leave skin radiant). Texture/Consistency: Gel that turns to foam Scent: Price: $16 for 6 oz / 177 mL Experience: I use this maybe 2-3 times a week (as directed for oily skin) and haven’t noticed much of a difference in my skin. It performs just like any other cleanser to me. I use it as my second cleanse and it’s just meh. Honestly not impressed with this and glad I got it as a free sample. Repurchase/Recommend?: I would not repurchase or recommend this, I haven’t noticed any special benefit over any other cleanser. . philosophy - Clear Days Ahead Oil-Free Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment Cleanser Key Ingredients: Salicylic Acid (helps prevent breakouts). Texture/Consistency: Gel Scent: Very strong orange scent Price: $22 for 8 oz Experience: Even after using this a couple times a week as my second cleanse at night, I’ve only seen a minimal amount of reduction in my acne and can’t contribute it solely to this. The scent is so strong that I can smell it for a while after washing my face. It can be difficult to completely wash off the face. Repurchase/Recommend?: No, too expensive for what it does.
How I Treated My Hormonal Acne
How I Treated My Hormonal Acne
I struggled with hormonal pustule acne for a long time, as well as pustules and whiteheads from oil overproduction. It was moderate to severe, covering my left and right cheeks. Three specific products helped to reduce my breakouts in frequency, coverage, redness, and the level of pain associated with the inflammation. PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Niacinamide Booster is amazing. Just 4% Niacinamide has been shown by a couple studies to be as effective at reducing moderate acne as clindamycin- a topical antibiotic! I can attest to its acne fighting prowess, as I saw distinct reduction in not only the amount of acne I had, but also how intense it was- it was less painful and not nearly as red a few hours after application. Niacinamide normalizes pore lining and controls oil production so I saw immense improvement in whiteheads and pustules when using twice daily. But this prevented my oil-caused acne more than my hormonal acne, though it eased both. DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum was the first product I used that gave me relief. I hadn’t known it, but my oil overproduction was largely in part from dehydrated skin. Since I used no moisturizer or serum, my skin produced extra oil after I cleansed. Incorporating B-Hydra replenished my skin with water, glycerin, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate (a form of HA), and sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer. I saw quick reduction in the number of whiteheads I developed! Using it before applying an exfoliant helps prevent dryness associated with peels. PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster should be in nearly ever acne arsenal. It is antimicrobial and anti inflammatory to help fight acne, plus it lightens dark spots dramatically in my experience. Applying this in the AM shrinks pustules by nighttime and makes the area around the blemish much less red. I find this gives the quickest acne-minimizing results of all the products I’ve used. When treating acne, always make sure to eliminate possible irritants such as fragrance and essential oils, as well as drying alcohol. Acne can be a sign of inflammation and using gentle products can ease the pain associated with (as well as the prevalence of) acne tremendously. As well, I always recommend salicylic acid for treating acne, but I wanted to highlight these specific products because they’re not mentioned as often and they played a huge role in my acne journey.

Body Merry - Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Cleanser was given to me as a gratis. The representative of this brand was saying great things about this cleanser and so I gave it a try Body Merry is a natural skincare brand that claims to use all natural ingredients. The purpose of this products is to unclog pores from impurities as well as remove dead skin cells because of glycolic acid. Helps brightening, nourish, and moisturize the skin. I am prone to acne and was a little skeptical using it because of olive and jojoba oil do not do well with my skin. However, after using it for almost a month I noticed some changes on my skin. Before using this my skin was looking dull, had a lot of oil buildup on my t-zone, dark spots from previous breakouts. After using for almost a month my skin looked radiant, I saw less oil around my t-zone, and I also had less breakouts. As for my dark spots some were still visible (but as we know sometimes we need a different product to help with those areas). What I love about it is that the beads (made out of jojoba wax see 2nd picture) were gentle. This product had a citrusy smell but it was not over powering were my skin felt irritation. In fact after cleansing my skincare felt moisturized, smooth, and radiant. As you read at the beginning my concern of suing this product was olive and jojoba oil however, because of the following ingredients my skin had no bad reaction. 🔅Glycolic Acid - a chemical exfoliator helps remove dead skin cells as well treats acne & scars, hyperpigmentation and more 🔅 Willow Bark - an alternative salicylic acid because it contains salicin (source of SA) helps treat acne and decrease excess oil. 🔅 Kojic Acid- helps with hyperpigmentation and dark spots ( however due to all these great ingredients it is less effective) 🔅 Tea tree oil - antibacterial & antibacterial properties 🔅 Oils such as rose hip, olive, & jojoba help moisturize & nourish skin 🔅 CICA- this ingredient is low but it has its effects helps soothe skin & one of my holy grail ingredients for acne My overall expensive I enjoyed it because it was gentle and I would use it 3 times a week when exfoliating. Price: Retail price - $19.99 Current the brand website is having a discount of a $1 off) *Remember not all will have the same skin reaction, be gentle to your skin and get to know your skin*
Double Masking!?
Double Masking!?
Yep! Double masking is totally a thing! It’s kinda like using multiple leave on products to treat multiple concerns, but in the supercharged and extra pampering routine of masking. It can be super fun and helpful for your soon as long as it’s done to not harm the skin. A recent combination I have come up with is to do the The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution followed by the SKINCEUTICALS - PHYTO CORRECTIVE MASK Calming Face Mask For Blotchy Skin . This combo will resurface my skin and then calm and soothe the new skin that is revealed. By stripping away the dead stuff and then nourishing and hydrating the new stuff I am eliminating irritation and redness I usually get when I do the peel by itself. This combo also ensures that my skin will be revealed even healthier by immediately soothing it and hydrating it so that it can stay healthy and not potentially dry out and become dull. The peel is amazing as it truly tingles away all the built up texture and dead skin and diving into the pores to clear up blockages. The phyto mask is heavenly because it’s such a thick gel that soothes immediately. I could tell my skin was a little more sensitized this time I used the peel because the phyto mask stung a touch before feeling just cooling and calming. A match made in heaven if you ask me! So double masking can be great, but I would never suggest a combination such as a clay mask after the peel because you would be stripping the skin too much and opening up for potential strong irritation. I also have wouldn’t use a vitamin c mask with an exfoliation mask since that could lead to irritation as well. And further, a gel mask and then a sheet mask would just feel redundant! Double masking is lovely for a special event or a pamper evening like my once a week peel, but it’s not a necessity nor does it need to be often :) Happy masking!!
