Dermatologists' Advice: How To Get Rid Of Eye Bags & Dark Circles
May 9, 2020
Time is constantly moving, and it really does wait for no one. Sometimes, it feels like there just are not enough hours in the day to get everything done, take care of yourself, and get a good night’s sleep. It leads to fatigue and sleep deprivation, dehydration, and stress – and it shows a physical toll through annoying undereye bags and dark circles. While these can be as easy to get rid of as getting a good night’s sleep, they can also be extremely persistent. Want to know the best ways to get rid of them? Here’s how to best reduce undereye bags and dark circles, according to dermatologists.
What Causes Undereye Bags and Dark Circles?
Like many skin problems, undereye bags and dark circles have various contributors to the issue. Perhaps the most common and obvious one is a lack of sleep. Bad news for those of us who struggle to get our 8 hours every night. These sleep-related bags and circles are the end result of blood vessels leaking and mixing with the fluid that settles into our undereye tissues at night. It’s a not so glamorous picture, but it’s a good reminder that sleep is important! It’s also important to recognize, however, that sleep is only one cause. Although less common than sleep deprivation, there are still many things that can cause these skin issues to pop up. Allergies, alcohol use, smoking, excessive sun exposure, diet, skin tone, and aging can all contribute to both undereye bags and dark circles.
Dermatologist Recommended Treatments
Undereye bags and dark circles are two issues that don’t have a neat and tidy answer thanks to their many causes. No matter what you choose to do about your cosmetic woes, though, professionals agree that a multifaceted approach is the best way to handle it. On their own, lifestyle changes and skincare products or professional treatments can lead to some improvement, but a combination will attack the problem from every angle possible, improving skin condition better and faster than a more simplistic approach. That being said, what specific steps should you take? Here are a few key things to do if you want to get rid of your bags and dark circles:
- Sleep more and sleep elevated – For those who find their undereye area looking rougher right after waking up, odds are that sleep is your main contributor. In this case, dermatologists recommend sleeping on your back and propping yourself up with a couple of extra pillows. This will help reduce the pooling of fluid under your eyes, which will also decrease puffiness, bagginess, and dark shadows.
- Take a Benadryl (or other antihistamines) – Now that it’s springtime, hay fever and other allergies are ramping up and wreaking havoc. This can also do quite the number on your dark circles since rubbing your eyes can break blood vessels. Take a good allergy medication and you should be feeling and looking better in no time.
- Try a retinoid – Just like how wearing thin materials will show more, thin skin will show more, too. Unfortunately, that means it will show off dark circles and bags way more than thicker skin. If skin thinness is a problem for you, a retinoid is an ideal treatment for you. It will stimulate collagen to thicken it up and help make dark circles less visible. It can also plump up sunken skin – perfect if you also have hollow circles under your eyes.
- Be gentle with your skin – People are rough with their skin all the time. We’re rough washing our faces, drying our faces, taking off makeup, itching, etcetera, etcetera. If you support dermatologists (and the good of your face), stop it! It leads to the exact inflammation and irritation that causes bags and shadows. Be gentler and your undereye area will reflect it.
- Stay hydrated – Most of us are chronically dehydrated, but it’s doing no favors for our health or our skin. Dehydration will cause us to retain water, thus increasing skin puffiness and undereye bags. So, try to drink more water. This should help us shed excess water we’re holding onto and then help our eyes look their best.
- Consider Microneedling – Most people would probably be hesitant to let a needle anywhere near their face, but dermatologists say it’s one of the most promising undereye treatments right now. Why? Because the needling both encourages collagen production and allows topical treatments to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Most of us will deal with dark circles, bags, drooping, wrinkles, and more in our time on this earth. It’s okay to accept this, but if you’re interested in helping the issue, just know there’re a ton of options out there! Coming at it from both a lifestyle change route and a product route will ensure your skin can look its best and look its best sooner. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, using anti-aging products, getting more sleep, trying chemical peels or micro-needling, and staying elevated at night can all lead to lasting results, and help you feel your best. A little overwhelmed by it all, still? That’s okay. When in doubt, contact your dermatologist and discuss what your best options are for your lifestyle and your skin type.
Clear skin the gentle way?
Thank you @cheriefor this amazing gift 🤩 “buh-koo-chee-all” HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum I’ve already become a diehard Herbivore lover. So to receive this beauty was super exciting. When I started my acne journey on Cherie I was (and still am) a Differin Acne Gel stan. This was my choice of retinol and I wanted it strong to treat acne and boost my cellular turnover. Now that my acne is currently under control and it’s getting hot again, I definitely want something smooth and gentle. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative to the very popular ingredient retinol. So essentially you’ll get overall youthful results for your skin. I haven’t tested this on my acne theory yet, but overall my face has been smooth and irritation free. This serum does not have a smell which I love for products of this caliber. I also love that it’s light and not drying at all. I use this at night and since i have a tolerance to retinol I use it every night. I haven’t been using it long enough to see results (about 12 weeks) but I definitely can’t wait to finish this. Have you tried Bakuchiol?
A Journey of Self 🌹
I figured Black History Month was as good as any opportunity to talk about my self finding. Growing up in a small yet old family, I always had questions about my roots and family history. I also struggled with self conscious doubts about my appearance. Why is my nose this big? Why is my hair this curly? Why am I taller than average? These weighed heavy on my mind growing up because honestly, sticking out sucked. So, I finally dove deep into my family’s origin and decided to do an Ancestry DNA analysis. I immersed myself with every corner of the site. I only got the chance to finish my maternal grandmas side of the family tree, but even that has plenty of gaps. Yet, when I received my DNA results I was stoked. Then I realized, I don’t know much about any of these places. So I dug even deeper. I have a little journal of things I’ve learned and want to know, but this was quite the experience. It was heartbreaking and satisfying at the same time. I highly recommend for every race and background to do this DNA Test. The best part of this was scrolling through photos of the people of the respected countries I was DNA matched to. I swear I saw a girl who looked like me, but everyone else thinks I’m tripping lol. In the end, I’m satisfied with my results and findings. Relatively speaking, this way of self discovery has been the most effective.
Double Your Lash Length With Sky High Mascara!
I bought this mascara after seeing a post about it on Facebook. I love trying out new mascaras but rarely do I find one that I will use regularly like my beloved tarte - Maneater Mascara However this stuff is good. MAYBELLINE - Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara It gave my lashes so much volume & length they literally doubled in size! My lashes are already pretty long to begin with but this made them look amazing. The photo is after applying only one coat so I can only imagine how good they will look after two or three coats! It also didn’t clump up my lashes at all. I applied it really quickly & lazily too because I was in a rush to get ready & I was still amazed! I honestly think this is going to be my new daily mascara. It is waterproof but not the annoying kind that leaves your eyes completely black when you go to take it off. It came off really easily with my POND'S - Facial Moisturizers Dry Skin Cream which is what I’ve always used to remove my eye makeup, since I was a kid! @cherie@Cheriebeauty@CheriePick
At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚
My Farewell To Cherie
Follow me on Ig for more skincare since Cherie is leaving 😭 @naturedskinv This has been an amazing journey and I’ve made soo many amazing friends. Thank you for all the love, conversations, and just overall happiness I’ve experienced on this app. I’m definitely sad, a little upset, and a dash of confused, but thank you @cheriefor giving me such an amazing confidence boost and guidance. The way the app shaped my thoughts on skincare has been insane. I’m still willing to forget this and call it a joke if y’all are! 😭 Anyways thank you again and hopefully we can stay in touch 🙏🏾

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
