Time is constantly moving, and it really does wait for no one. Sometimes, it feels like there just are not enough hours in the day to get everything done, take care of yourself, and get a good night’s sleep. It leads to fatigue and sleep deprivation, dehydration, and stress – and it shows a physical toll through annoying undereye bags and dark circles. While these can be as easy to get rid of as getting a good night’s sleep, they can also be extremely persistent. Want to know the best ways to get rid of them? Here’s how to best reduce undereye bags and dark circles, according to dermatologists.
What Causes Undereye Bags and Dark Circles?
Like many skin problems, undereye bags and dark circles have various contributors to the issue. Perhaps the most common and obvious one is a lack of sleep. Bad news for those of us who struggle to get our 8 hours every night. These sleep-related bags and circles are the end result of blood vessels leaking and mixing with the fluid that settles into our undereye tissues at night. It’s a not so glamorous picture, but it’s a good reminder that sleep is important! It’s also important to recognize, however, that sleep is only one cause. Although less common than sleep deprivation, there are still many things that can cause these skin issues to pop up. Allergies, alcohol use, smoking, excessive sun exposure, diet, skin tone, and aging can all contribute to both undereye bags and dark circles.
Dermatologist Recommended Treatments
Undereye bags and dark circles are two issues that don’t have a neat and tidy answer thanks to their many causes. No matter what you choose to do about your cosmetic woes, though, professionals agree that a multifaceted approach is the best way to handle it. On their own, lifestyle changes and skincare products or professional treatments can lead to some improvement, but a combination will attack the problem from every angle possible, improving skin condition better and faster than a more simplistic approach. That being said, what specific steps should you take? Here are a few key things to do if you want to get rid of your bags and dark circles:
  • Sleep more and sleep elevated – For those who find their undereye area looking rougher right after waking up, odds are that sleep is your main contributor. In this case, dermatologists recommend sleeping on your back and propping yourself up with a couple of extra pillows. This will help reduce the pooling of fluid under your eyes, which will also decrease puffiness, bagginess, and dark shadows.
  • Take a Benadryl (or other antihistamines) – Now that it’s springtime, hay fever and other allergies are ramping up and wreaking havoc. This can also do quite the number on your dark circles since rubbing your eyes can break blood vessels. Take a good allergy medication and you should be feeling and looking better in no time.
  • Try a retinoid – Just like how wearing thin materials will show more, thin skin will show more, too. Unfortunately, that means it will show off dark circles and bags way more than thicker skin. If skin thinness is a problem for you, a retinoid is an ideal treatment for you. It will stimulate collagen to thicken it up and help make dark circles less visible. It can also plump up sunken skin – perfect if you also have hollow circles under your eyes.
  • Be gentle with your skin – People are rough with their skin all the time. We’re rough washing our faces, drying our faces, taking off makeup, itching, etcetera, etcetera. If you support dermatologists (and the good of your face), stop it! It leads to the exact inflammation and irritation that causes bags and shadows. Be gentler and your undereye area will reflect it.
  • Stay hydrated – Most of us are chronically dehydrated, but it’s doing no favors for our health or our skin. Dehydration will cause us to retain water, thus increasing skin puffiness and undereye bags. So, try to drink more water. This should help us shed excess water we’re holding onto and then help our eyes look their best.
  • Consider Microneedling – Most people would probably be hesitant to let a needle anywhere near their face, but dermatologists say it’s one of the most promising undereye treatments right now. Why? Because the needling both encourages collagen production and allows topical treatments to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Most of us will deal with dark circles, bags, drooping, wrinkles, and more in our time on this earth. It’s okay to accept this, but if you’re interested in helping the issue, just know there’re a ton of options out there! Coming at it from both a lifestyle change route and a product route will ensure your skin can look its best and look its best sooner. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, using anti-aging products, getting more sleep, trying chemical peels or micro-needling, and staying elevated at night can all lead to lasting results, and help you feel your best. A little overwhelmed by it all, still? That’s okay. When in doubt, contact your dermatologist and discuss what your best options are for your lifestyle and your skin type.

Tips from a dermatologist on sunscreen ☀️
Tips from a dermatologist on sunscreen ☀️
Let’s talk about sunscreen ☀️ What’s a good sunscreen to wear? One that is: * Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays) * SPF 30 or higher * Water resistant This will help protect your skin from early skin aging, sunburn, and skin cancer. What is the difference between chemical and physical sunscreens? Chemical sunscreens work like a sponge, absorbing the sun’s rays. They contain one or more of the following ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. These are often easier to rub into the skin without a white cast. Physical sunscreens (aka mineral sunscreens) act like a shield, sitting on the surface of your skin and deflecting the sun’s rays. These can come on white. They have the active ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide Reapply every 2 hours when outside in the sun ☀️ Some of my favorites: Tinted: Cerave tinted, la roche posay tinted, alastin CeraVe - Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 LA ROCHE-POSAY - Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50 ALASTIN SKINCARE - HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36 Not tinted: colorescience, drunk elephant colorescience - Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF 50 Sunscreen DRUNK ELEPHANT - Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 What’s your favorite sunscreen?
Kylie x Grinch - Worth the Hype?
Kylie x Grinch - Worth the Hype?
Review time!!! I just received the entire Kylie Cosmetics Grinch Collection in the mail this week & I want to break down each product and tell you what I loved and didn’t love. Palette: I’m not one that reaches for tons of colour usually but all the greens in this palette are gorgeous! There’s a mix of matte and shimmer shades, and as usual, the shadows blend like a dream! The good thing about this palette is that there are still some neutral shades rather than just greens. I definitely appreciate the mixture of shades. Shadow Sticks: The Kylie shadow sticks are probably one of my favourite products they have ever released. They are so extremely pigmented, and so easy to apply. They’re basically fool proof, and they set as a shadow. If you haven’t tried them out, I highly suggest you do! In this collection we have a super pretty light shimmery green, light gold, and two rosy toned shadow sticks. Shimmer Eye Glazes: This product is insane. They are a super intensely pigmented eyeshadow that leaves the lids looking wet & dripping in glitter! One swipe of these on the lid is literally all you need for that intense shimmer. If you’re someone who loves super shimmery eyeshadow, I recommend giving the Kylie Cosmetics Shimmer Eye Glazes a try. This collection came with 2 shades: a minty turquoise green and a gold - & I’m obsessed and so happy to be adding these to my collection!! Olive Kyliner: My go to liquid liner is the black Kyliner, so i wasn’t surprised when i loved the easy application and long wearing quality of this olive Kyliner! The liner applies a lighter olive green and dries down to a deeper olive shade. It’s definitely not something I’d reach for everyday, although it’s definitely cute for the holidays or even for a pop of colour to a neutral eye! Blush: I am a huge fan of the Kylie Cosmetics Blushes as opposed to the other blushes I’ve tried from the brand this one had some shimmer in it! It’s quite similar to the NARS “orgasm” blush but with a stronger pink hue. I love the shimmer in it, it adds a pretty glow to the cheeks, perfect for the holidays.. or any day really :P Highlight: Def on theme, but probably my least favourite product in of the collection :( Don’t get me wrong, it’s super blinding and glowy. Although, once I applied to my face it showed off as very green. Personally I don’t want a green glow on my face! But hey, if that’s your vibe that’s cool! Definitely not a highlight I’d reach for everyday. Lip Kit: Obsessed. This red is EVERYTHING! This Lip Kit is one of the best reds I have ever tried. It has a matte finish and is extremely long wearing. I know it’s sold out but a similar shade would be “BOSS” by Kylie. Lipsticks: These shades are gorg for the holidays and I love the shade range! Long wearing & comfortable on the lips. High Glosses: Kylies high glosses are high shine, but very sticky! So if you’re not a fan of sticky glosses you won’t love these. These shades are perf for the holidays and everyday!
