To some extent, fine lines are an inevitable part of the aging process. You aren't going to look like your 20-year-old self forever, but there are ways to nourish your skin so you can blossom gracefully into your golden years. There are plenty of factors at work when it comes to fine lines and a lot of simple things you can do to prevent them.
What Causes Fine Lines?
The causes of fine lines are environmental, internal, and based on your lifestyle.
Fine lines can be caused by free radicals in the air. Free radicals are found in cigarette smoke, polluted air, and the chemicals found in many cleaners. The problem with free radicals is that they are made up of unstable atoms- and will try to steal electrons from your body to complete themselves. This can cause aging as well as disease in the body.
Another culprit is our friend, the sun. While it gives us so many great things, it's also shining down on us with UV rays. Our body has melanin to protect us from UV rays (this is what causes your skin to turn darker in the summer months), but it can only protect you to a certain extent. After that, the sun can cause damage to your skin, breaking down your (already depleting) natural collagen reserves. How rude!
Unfortunately, your body slows down on collagen production over time. Collagen keeps your skin springy and soft, lubricates your joints, and helps you stay hydrated. When you have less of it, your skin can look droopy, dull and wrinkled.
As you're slowing down on collagen production, another process is taking place. We all have tiny "hinges" in our body that help us move and express emotion. Over time, this movement starts to make impressions in the skin around these hinges. With your skin being less elastic than it once was, these start to show up as crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles.
If second-hand cigarette smoke can cause fine lines, imagine what it must be doing when you inhale it yourself. Smoking has absolutely no benefit to your body, so if you have been thinking of quitting, here's your sign! Your skin will thank you.
Are you someone who only smokes when they drink? Bad news, because drinking causes wrinkles too! In moderation, alcohol may be ok. But when you are drinking regularly, you will become dehydrated which can cause not only fine lines, but bloating in the face and body. Try sipping a fizzy water at your next event.
Another factor at play is sleep position. Sleeping with your head mashed up against the pillow can cause wrinkles over time. You deserve to be comfy, but if you can get used to sleeping on your back, you'll reap the rewards.
What Can I Do to Reduce Fine Lines?
So, with all these factors at play, it's natural to feel a bit helpless against the natural causes of fine lines and wrinkles. Of course, fillers and botox are options, but there are also lots of budget-friendly ways to reduce fine lines and prevent more from popping up.
Cover Up
It's healthy to enjoy the summer sun, but make sure you're wearing sunscreen every day- even in the winter! There are plenty of amazing cc creams infused with SPF protection, so it's easy to incorporate a little defense in your day-to-day. You can also opt to shield yourself from those UV rays with fabulous hats and scarves! Embrace your inner diva.
Eat your Veggies
You've probably heard the term "anti-oxidant" before without really knowing what it meant. Good news! Anti-oxidants are easy to find, and they offer electrons to those greedy free-radicals without depleting your resources. You can find anti-oxidants in the following tasty foods:
  • Berries
  • Tomato
  • Spinach
  • Nuts
  • Green Tea
So the easiest way to fight fine lines is to make a tasty salad! Eating lots of fruits and veggies also boosts your water intake, another simple way to stay youthful.
Take Your Vitamins
Try a collagen supplement. These come in pill and powder form, and have been proven to boost your skin's elasticity. You may even reduce joint pain in the process!
The Right Stuff
You'll want to think about your skincare routine. Thick heavy creams can clog your pores, causing them to stretch and droop. Make sure you're regularly and effectively cleansing the skin to keep those pores clean and tidy.
You also may want to pick up an exfoliator. As we age, our cellular turnover slows down, which means dead skin can stick around for longer. Giving your face a good scrub can encourage cellular renewal and give you that youthful glow.

In the age of exfoliating now, it’s so easy to overdo and can easily result in harming the skin instead. Here are my favorite exfoliating acids (and products) and how I use it so I don’t damage my skin! Lactic Acid: A super gentle acid that exfoliates the top layer of skin and removes dead skin cells. I find this to be the most gentle of the acids and can be used everyday. I love fresh - Black Tea Kombucha Facial Treatment Essence because I use it as an essence treatment. This is a liquid formula that easily sinks into the skin and “primes” the skin for the next products. It’s also a hydrating formula! Azelaic Acid: Another more gentle exfoliating acid that helps improve the appearance of blemishes and fade post-acne marks. I love this PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster because it can be mixed into your moisturizer and boost the effectiveness. I love that this speeds up the healing process of my acne marks because then I get clearer skin quicker! Salicylic Acid: One of the most effective exfoliating acids for treating and preventing acne! It exfoliates deep into the layers of skin and removes dead skin cells. PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator is a super strong and effective formula that I like to use when I’m breaking out A LOT. It’s too harsh on my skin to use daily but once a week is fine. I also love LA ROCHE-POSAY - Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser for Acne Prone Skin which I use every night to wash my face. It’s just as effective and not too strong for daily use because it’s a wash off product and doesn’t stay on the skin. Glycolic Acid: Easily one of the strongest and deeply exfoliating acids out there. I find it super effective as a night serum like DRUNK ELEPHANT - T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum or as a scrub like ALPHA-H - Micro Super Scrub with 12% Glycolic Acid . I use these products 2 times a week just to keep my skin free of congestion and to maintain the texture of my skin.

CLARISMA - Cool Ocean Breeze Daily Cleanser : I LOVE this cleanser! It is light weight and brings beach vibes with the ocean breeze sent! My skin isn't left oily and feels cleaned. This is a glittery cleanser. I like this concept becuase you are able to see if you are properly cleaning this cleanser off your face. For some reason after using this cleanser, I experience a little redness around my nose. It does not bother me or burn. I love Halloween! I love the decorations and the candy of course, but I don't love taking hours to get ready! Every year my costume is quick, easy and made using things I already have lying around. This year is now different, I'm going as a cute mouse and only needed 1 product for this hair look, the scünci - No Damage Elastics Brown ! I have super curly, shoulder length hair and did this style on second day hair. The only product that is in it is the CURLSMITH - Curl Defining Styling Souffle . It has strong hold and gives great definition. I applied on soaking wet hair and let my hair air dry. It's been slept on and gone through an intense workout, I didn't break the cast in order to wear it as long as possible! These mouse ears are super easy to do and will work for all hair types! You could also play around with the shape of the buns are create bunny or cat ears! For a classic mouse look go for a higher bun and add some volume to them! Here's how I did the mouse ears: 1. Section the hair in half with a middle part. 2. Using a hair tie create a pig tail on one side, you can choose the placement but because my hair is shorter I went with a side placement. 3. Add a matching pig tail to the other side! 4. Using your third hair tie create a fun bun! Since my hair is curly I didn't need to pull out any pieces but I love the messy look! 5. Do the same to the other side. 6. You can stop here and your done! OR add some fun accessories like sparkly clips and bobby pins! Have a safe and fun Halloween! Hi!! With halloween around the corner and face paints and heavy makeup inevitable, I wanted to share some products that I think would be helpful to making sure your skin stays safe and protected under makeup, and things to do post makeup to minimize irritation and acne. Besides your normal routine, here are some things you can add! Obviously I don’t suggest adding all these things in one day, but if you have some of these and you know they work for you, try it out! My skin type: sensitive, acne-prone, rosacea, combo My skin concern: redness, hyperpigmentation Pre Halloween Skincare: + FARMACY - Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask this is one of my favorite hydrating masks; it has a warming effect and it’s very healing. The antioxidants can protect from free radicals and provide a quick moisture barrier recovery. Use it very lightly and it washes off SO well. Smells a bit like honey. + FARMACY - Deep Sweep this toner is absolutely heavenly, it’s great for preparing your skin for incoming acne and clearing up oily skin and extra sebum. Not a lot of fragrance, which is great. This is perfect for halloween because salicylic acid is a bit photosensitive, but at night time there and under masks there is very little that could go wrong in that sense. + romer - romer Treat this product is fairly new to me, but I am very excited about it. It’s a moisturizer/treatment combo, so you can leave it on or wash it off as a mask. I prefer to leave it on; it’s very soothing and rich, so it hydrates my skin so well. Smells very fresh and also a bit like fruit! It’s made with niacinamide and prickly pear, so it’s nourishing as well as a little clarifying. Post Halloween Skincare: + PLANT APOTHECARY - Not A Spot Acne Treatment Mask you know how you can FEEL acne coming after a long day of wearing makeup or sweating or whatever? This mask is perfect for it! I usually use this as a spot treatment unless my skin is really bad - it can be drying on normal or dry skin. If you’re oily or combo, just use sparingly. It’s a powder so you have to follow the directions and mix it with water (or your favorite serum or essence or toner), I usually just do water, and then it’s like a paste! Not much of a smell, but I do like the gentleness of it. + SNP - Cicaronic Sheet Mask after acne masks or clay masks, I like to follow up with a hydrating sheet mask to soothe and calm my skin. This one is perfect - made with centella asiatica aka cica - and the sheet mask actually fits my face for the first time ever! This will add some hydration back into your skin post acne/clay mask and prep for the rest of your routine. Smells like fresh cut grass!
