Understanding Your Cystic Acne and Choosing Safe Ingredients

May 7
Acne is among the most prevalent skin disorders in the world. It appears on the upper body as lesions that are either non-inflammatory or inflammatory.
Cystic acne falls into the latter category as one of the most severe types of acne. We discuss what causes these cysts to appear and the symptoms.
Lastly, we share which ingredients are suitable for cystic acne.
Symptoms of Cystic Acne
Also known as nodulocystic acne, the primary symptom is lesions that grow underneath the surface of the skin. These eruptions contain fluid or pus and are often painful.
Unlike regular pimples, the cysts don’t always have a head from which pus emerges. However, they can burst if they get large enough.
Cystic acne is most likely to cause atrophic or indented scarring. One such manifestation is ice-pick scars, so named because the scar is set deep into the skin.
Cystic Acne Causes
As with other lesions, whether minor or major, there can be several possible causes. The following issues can all play a role:
1. High Sebum Levels
A factor that increases your risk for acne, in general, is excess sebum production. This natural skin oil is harmless in normal quantities.
Unfortunately, too much of it can block your pores and result in blemishes. That’s why many anti-acne treatments aim to reduce sebum levels.
2. Bacteria
Bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes exists harmlessly on your skin—unless conditions are favorable for infection to occur. Clogged pores increase the chances of bacteria penetrating the surface of your skin and provoking cysts.
3. Changing Hormones
Natural hormonal shifts can induce acne. Teenagers and young adults are the most likely victims due to the surge of hormones that occur during puberty.
Pregnant women may also suffer from acne, particularly if they cannot continue prescription treatments that are dangerous to the fetus.
Menopause can also be a culprit, as levels of the male hormone androgen can increase, prompting acne.
Some women report their blemishes worsening or flaring up right before their menstrual cycle begins.
4. Hormonal Diseases
As we’ve touched on, hormones can play a significant role in the appearance of acne. In women, it’s a trademark symptom of disorders that elevate male hormone levels.
For example, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly accompanied by acne of varying severity.
Safe Ingredients for Cystic Acne
It’s essential to exercise caution when selecting skincare products. The right ingredients can help reduce your lesions and limit new ones from forming.
If you’re already using a prescription topical treatment, take care to check if an over-the-counter cosmetic is compatible with it. You don’t want to end up aggravating your cysts further.
1. Topical Retinoids
Retinoids are standard when it comes to complexion-clearing products. They’re often prescribed in higher strengths by dermatologists.
These compounds are derived from vitamin A and can work to relieve inflammation with consistent use.
2. Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is another mainstay acne remedy. It acts as an antimicrobial, which means it can target high bacteria levels that inflame cysts.
It also functions as a thorough cleanser, which can limit the buildup of sebum, dead skin cells, and debris that clog pores. In turn, this should limit the development of new lesions.
3. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
These organic acids come from either plants or animals. They’re often found in various medical and cosmetic solutions for skin disorders. Alpha hydroxy acids have exfoliating properties and can help to dry out minor eruptions such as pustules.
AHAs can also work to reduce the appearance of scars, which are a frequent after-effect of cystic acne.
4. Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid has proven effective at reducing the number of lesions, as well as how severe they are. It can penetrate blocked pores and has powerful cleansing properties.
It also acts as an exfoliator, sloughing off dead skin cells and other debris. However, you might require a stronger, prescription concentration to see results with cystic acne.
5. Natural Extracts
Certain organic compounds, such as plant extracts, can help improve cystic acne lesions.
One study revealed that a combination of tea tree oil, aloe vera, and bee propolis was more effective than an antibiotic. The natural mixture reduced the number and severity of lesions as well as scarring.
Treating Cystic Acne
Suitable ingredients for cystic acne shouldn’t be too harsh or oily. Remember that most topical solutions will take time to get results.
Ideally, you should check with your dermatologist before beginning a new skincare regime. You should also monitor yourself for side effects, such as increased dryness or breakouts.
It’s also important to identify the cause, whether it be hormonal shifts or something else. Bear in mind that severe cases may require antibiotics or other prescription medications, such as Spironolactone.

ABH Dipbrow Dupe!
ABH Dipbrow Dupe!
For the longest time I’ve always stuck with my Anastasia Beverly Hills dipbrow pomade!! And while the product itself is amazing, I randomly picked out this pomade by elf out of curiosity and fell in love!!! This is seriously a game changer if you use pomade for your everyday brows and want to save some extra cash!! The e.l.f. - Lock on Liner and Brow Cream is for One, easy to use Secondly dries down so nice, (I don’t worry if I accidentally wiped off a piece of my brow Lol). And best of all it’s literally $2!! I use the shade “Medium Brown” and find this blends really nice with black hair! Unfortunately my only con is that the product doesn’t have that many shades especially compared to Anastasia. I provided a photo of how I normally do my brows with this product for anyone wondering! Overall this is a great affordable pomade alternative! What products do you use for your brows?

My Ulta Black Friday haul ✨
My Ulta Black Friday haul ✨
So upon seeing the ad for Ulta’s Black Friday I told myself I wasn’t going to purchase anything... three separate purchases later I found myself with a completely pink haul (which is completely out of character for me 😂) The first thing I picked up on Black Friday was the ANASTASIA Beverly Hills - Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit which I have used a few times since then. I’m absolutely blown away how stunning this is on the cheeks. I feel like ABH is the queen of highlighters that look subtle but still give you that bam out of this world glow from within. Later on in the night I decided I needed the COLOURPOP - Lux Lip Oilin the shade Truth Bomb and the #Colourpop - Amourex Glitterly Obsessed Mini Duo[products]#. I have two glitter gels by Colourpop and I absolutely love them despite not using them often. The mini pots are super cute and I don’t feel wasteful if I don’t use them. Then, on Saturday I purchased the ANASTASIA Beverly Hills - Haute Holiday Lip Gloss Setbecause it was on sale and I’ve been obsessed with the pale nude colors since this set came out. I also impulse bought the #It Cosmetics - Rose Gold Eye Brush Set[products]#as it was also on sale (I think I paid around $20 for it) and I needed the liner brush in it for my Melt Cosmetics gel eyeliners. This set comes with four brushes which includes my absolute favorite blending brush, the number 105. It Cosmetics has the SOFTEST brushes I’ve ever used. The quality by far surpasses anything I own. It also comes with a really cute rose gold container for it. I’m hoping to have reviews up for these eventually but here is my current Ulta haul 💗 I also plan on posting my Sephora Black Friday haul and my Ulta Cyber Monday haul once I get that. What did you guys pick up for for Black Friday?
The Profusion Feel Good Skin Perfector is the best foundation I have used HANDS DOWN, and it is only $7.🙃 - shade: medium 3 neutral - skin type: combination (this foundation has kept my face 95% matte for over 9 hours) - satin finish w/ a light-medium coverage (it is buildable) - applies best with a sponge (I use the profusion marble sponge) It made my skin look healthy and even, and it’s my new everyday favorite foundation. I am very picky with foundations, but this didn’t give me bad smile lines so it’s a 10/10 for me already. ☁️ If you haven’t yet..please try this foundation out and let me know what you think! Hope this helps your skin look BOMBBB sis💕 #Profusion - Feel Good Skin Long Wear Skin Perfector[products]#[FiveStars]
Skincare Products ( that i have been LOVING )
Skincare Products ( that i have been LOVING )
Recently, I have been super into skincare and keeping up with my skin’s appearance as I am growing myself in the beauty industry ( meaning that I am now CONSTANTLY doing makeup on myself! ) Fluff and Starface both sent me these products to try out, and I have been LOVING them so far! I have combination skin, and this routine is PERFECT for me! My new three favorite skincare products that I have been enjoying as of lately are 1) FLUFF - Face Oil #1 , which is 100% jojoba oil, which I used as an all natural makeup remover! Jojoba oil is super moisturizing and amazing for literally all skin types- especially acne prone and sensitive skin! 2) FLUFF cleanser , which is again - all natural - containing jojoba oil, hemp seed oil (which moisturizes without clogging pores, and balances out oily skin), ashwagandha root (which stimulates production of natural skin oils), and aloe vera (which reduces blemishes and acne, as well as lightens blemishes on the face). This cleanser does a great job of removing makeup as well as leaving you skin moisturized and soft! 3) STARFACE Moisture on Mars Hydrating Face Cream! A little bit of this product really goes a long way, leaving your face super soft, hydrated, and all with a SERIOUS glow!!! I highly recommend checking these 3 products all out! They all work great separately, but in my opinion as I have been using them cohesively, my skin has been looking and feeling great ( besides that one pimple 🙄 ). xx Isabelle
