That being said, while DIY skincare can be both a fun pastime as well as a favor to your wallet, it's important that you always do deep research on the ingredients you use on your skin as well as the mixtures you create. While DIY skincare is normally comprised of natural ingredients, that doesn't necessarily mean they are all the best for you. As a matter of fact, some of the most common DIY skincare ingredients have some harsh side-effects. Let's talk about that — and what ingredients you can use instead that won't be harmful to your skin!1. Witch HazelWitch hazel is often proclaimed as a great DIY toner, and can be really good for oily skin if used properly. However, what most people don't know is that witch hazel is usually distilled by alcohol or immersed in it as a preservative before it is bottled and sold. This can literally tear apart the skin's hydrating layer, leaving it dry and flaky (not to mention the fact that the natural fragrance in witch hazel is eugenol, a potent irritant.) If you do choose witch hazel and it works for you, be sure you reach for a 100% witch hazel like Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Toner. Instead of using witch hazel the next time you craft a DIY toner, curate your own cucumber water toner instead! Cucumber is wonderfully soothing and calming for your skin and very water-rich and nourishing, making it perfect for dry or irritated skin or to help ‘calm down’ any redness. To make a toner using cucumber simply peel and chop up one medium cucumber (ideally organic and washed with some water and diluted apple cider vinegar) into small cubes. Blend the cucumber and then drain the juice liquid into a bowl through a sieve. Store in a bottle in the refrigerator for up to one week.2. CinnamonWhile some DIY skincare recipes list cinnamon as an ingredient for exfoliation, studies show that the spice can easily cause skin irritation, blisters, and in some cases, even burns after just one use. Instead, very finely ground organic oatmeal is perfectly for gentle exfoliation! You can grind oatmeal in a blender, food processor, or mortar and pestle for a perfect granular consistency. 3. Coconut OilAh, coconut oil. Having been proclaimed as the DIY cure all for as long as I can remember, it's hard to imagine that this skincare staple belongs on this list! However, studies show that coconut oil might not be the best thing for some skin types. For some, it can be comedogenic, causing pores to become clogged and breakouts to occur as a result. Instead of clogging your pores with coconut oil, use aloe vera for all kinds of DIY skincare! Aloe vera, as opposed to coconut oil, is incredibly hydrating and cleansing, so you can trust it for nearly every one of your DIY skincare needs.4. EggsRaw eggs included in recipes for firming, anti-aging creams without a proper preservative can be incredibly scary. While using raw eggs as a single ingredient treatment is less risky than mixing it with other ingredients, you still have to worry about salmonella, listeria, staphylococcus aureus, avian influenza, and other food borne pathogens. Instead of using raw ingredients that could make you sick, do a facial massage to help tighten your skin! All you'll need are your hands and a non-comedogenic oil of your choice!

5. ToothpasteEven though the "toothpaste to help reduce a pimple" hack has been around forever, toothpaste's main ingredients — peroxide and baking soda — aren't so great for your skin. And even though it can bring down inflammation temporarily, it will eventually create irritation. Even worse, you run the risk of being left with marks and discoloration after the acne has faded. A more natural way to take care of acne comes in the form of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is much gentler than toothpaste and is great for fighting skin inflammation.6. Apple Cider VinegarFull strength raw ACV is highly irritating for skin and can cause inflammation and burns even after just one use. As a matter of fact, tt’s so acidic that it makes an effective remedy for burning off skin tags and warts, but continued use at full strength can cause permanent skin damage to surrounding tissue. That being said, ACV itself isn't dangerous, but you must be cautious about how you're using it and how strong it is. As a general rule of thumb, AVC shouldn't be used on the skin unless it is diluted to less than 20%. So feel free to continue using ACV, but consider adding 1 tbsp. to 2 cups of water instead of using it at full-strength.7. Baking SodaBaking soda is probably better left in the kitchen. Since it has a basic pH that is much higher than where healthy skin should live, baking soda can wreak havoc on your skin's natural lipid barriers. To avoid reactive, rashy skin, keep this orange box away from your face. Rosehip seed powder is a much better alternative! It has healthy benefits for skin and is a great gentle exfoliant.

Cleanse your skin like a pro
Cleansing is the first step of any skin regime, and it's essential to your skin's health that it is done correctly. Cleansing the skin removes makeup, sunscreen, and impurities/pollution built up from the day. Always use a Ph balanced cleanser to avoid compromising your skin's barrier. I generally switch out my gel cleanser for milk or balm in the winter months as my skin becomes drier. I find milk or balms more hydrating and soothing for the skin. My go-to right now is BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - Lait Vip O2 Oxygenating Milk Cleanser paired with either the mini glove Biologique Recherche or the Luna Cleaning tool FOREO - LUNA Mini 2 Facial Cleansing Brush Fuchsia to aid deeper cleaning and increase blood circulation while massaging the skin. Try not to skip cleansing at night no matter how sleepy you are, sleeping with your makeup on goes far beyond clogged pores. Sleeping with your makeup on in the long term will prematurely age your skin due to the breakdown of collagen from environmental pollutants left on the skin. Always cleanse your skin twice at night. Double cleansing is key in removing makeup and sunscreen effectively. Makeup and sunscreen are designed to stick to the skin, and one cleanse just not going to cut it. Use colder water, never hot water to cleanse your skin. Heat is not your skin's friend; it can cause tewl (transepidermal water loss), lead to irritation, dehydration and sensitivity. Avoid cleansing the skin in the shower, the water is generally too hot, and the shower's pressure can lead to burst vessels. Pat dry, do not aggressively rub your skin with a towel - I hear too many times people rub their skin aggressively with a dry face cloth to exfoliate the skin - stop it. Be gentle with your skin; there are better ways to exfoliate your skin - trust me. Which moves me on to P50 lotions BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - LOTION P50 PIGM 400 Follow your cleansing routine with the correct P50 lotion for your skin type. P50 lotion is a gentle but effective way to exfoliate, hydrate the skin while maintaining the skin's Ph and respecting its barrier function. My go-to P50 right now is Pig400 which also targets hyperpigmentation concerns. Trying to find the culprit... HELP!
Ever since I’ve added these two new products, I’ve noticed a couple new breakouts in places i’ve never experienced!!! They are red painful pimples too. Two on my forehead (I never get them there) , one on the outside of my nostril (i never get them there either), and the weirdest singular pimple on my NECK! Both of these products I have used on my face and neck, however, I’m not sure what product or ingredient is causing the sudden breakout!! Or is it just purging??? Help!!!!!! since COVID has started, I know many people are on new (or refining old) skincare journeys and I’ve recently been experiencing some dryness/dehydrating as the winter rolls around, which also aggravates my already oily skin. I’ve worked in the beauty industry for a while and also was formerly an esthetician, so I can get picky with skincare and ingredients. ‼️for reference, my skin type is: combo (oily/dehydrated), formerly acneic, hyperpigmentation prone, and sensitive 🔬I’ve used Dr. Jart in the past and love that it’s a Korean, science-backed brand so I was stoked to try this Porecting Solution Mask! this mask promises fresh, clear glowing skin that deeply cleanses and purifies pores. the mask contains charcoal and saponine, which creates the bubbling effect you see in the above photo. this product does not contain sulfates, paragons, are phthalates. 🛁when I first took it out of its package, I thought there were *two* masks per package instead of one, but if you read the instructions, there’s actually a “mask film” on the actual mask itself that you’re supposed to remove, so make sure to do that! the actual mask is thick and full of product while the mask film is thinner and lighter in color. the directions also give you a tip to massage the mask to release the bubbling/foaming effect - I did this mask with my mom at the same time in separate rooms and she totally didn’t read the instructions so her mask didn’t bubble at all, so I would suggest to definitely massage the mask. 💬I left it on for 20 minutes and it continued to bubble about 5-10 minutes in, then stopped bubbling. you can hear the bubbles pop as the mask sits on your face, which is kinda weird but cool. the mask didn’t slip off AT ALL which is also a huge, even when I put a sweatshirt on over my head. after taking it off, the serum took about another 10 minutes to soak into my skin and my face felt super smooth and my pores looked tighter and more clean. I have a few sebaceous filaments on my nose that I sometimes pick at and as I was rubbing the serum into my skin, I saw that some of the sebaceous filaments on my nose were sloughing off (which is gross, but speaks to how well the product worked)! overall, I would definitely recommend and use this again! if you have oily skin or otherwise clogged pores, sebaceous filaments, blackheads, etc. I would suggest this for you. even if you have dry/normal skin, this would be a good option since my skin didn’t feel dried out at all afterward, even in my dry spell now, and felt rather hydrated and plump. five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
