Oily Skin? We’ve Got You Covered

Oily skin is the worst. It makes your face shiny when you don’t want it to (hello, that’s what highlighter is for!) make you break out, and can sometimes just make you feel straight up gross. Luckily for you, scientists have figured out what actually causes oily skin. And because scientists are absolute GD geniuses, that means we know what we can doto prevent and treat oily skin!
What causes oily skin?
Everyone has oil in their skin. Supermodels, IG trend setters, your best friend – you name it, they have oil. From a scientific perspective, it comes from something called a sebaceous gland. In the correct amounts, sebum from the sebaceous gland keeps your skin hydrated and healthy. 
For a lot of us though, the sebaceous gland produces a little bit too much oil for our face. You can tell if your body gets a little bit excited about producing this type of oil if your skin looks supershiny, or maybe you feel greasy and gross even though you showered earlier in the day. 
Some of oiliness can come from our DNA, and there’s frankly not a lot anyone can do about that. There are, however, a few things that we can control that can cause oily skin, or at least things that we can know about that will make a difference. If you live in a warmer, more humid place, it’s not going to be surprising that your skin gets oilier. Relatedly, during the summer, your skin is also going to be oilier, just because it’s warmer and you’re going to be sweatier. 
It may surprise you, however, that even over-washing your face can make your skin oilier. When your skin feels shiny, you may want to wash it to get rid of that sheen. However, if you scrub your face too hard with products that aren’t good for it, you’re actually going to strip the top layer of your skin, which will make your body thinks it needs more moisture than it does. So sometimes, washing your face may make it shinier than it is already!
 In addition to the face wash you use, the makeup you put on your face can also make it oilier than you want it to be. If you don’t use good makeup – and especially if you don’t take it off at night before you fall asleep – what you put on your face to make you look gorgeous can also make you break out the next day. Harsh makeup can clog your pours or dry your skin, making those sebaceous glands produce more oil than they needto. 
 How can I treat oily skin?
So there’s a ton of reasons why your skincan be oily. Makeup, genetics, and even washing your face – we now know thatthey can make us oilier, but more importantly, what can we do to prevent it? Luckily, there are just as many ways to prevent oiliness as there are reasons that cause it!
You may be surprised to learn that using the right moisturizer can actually prevent your skin from being oily. In many instances, when our skin gets oily, it’s because our body has been tricked into thinking that your face is too dry. As a result, those GD sebaceous glands make more oil than we need to hydrate our faces. If we use the right moisturizer for our skin type, on the other hand, our body is going to know that your skin is hydrated just enough to stay healthy and bright. Just make sure you’re looking at those oil-free products, and your pores and skin will thank you! To hit two birds with one stone, try to use a moisturizer that has SPF in it. That way you’ll lose your oiliness AND prevent wrinkles at the same time!
Another thing you can do is to wash your face with the right products. Yes, we told you that washing your face too much with harsh stuff can make your skin oilier. But there’s a happy medium that’s super easy to hit that will keep your skin looking healthy! Washing your face twice a day using warm water with gentle soap is what’s best for most of us. Make sure that you use your hands and that you don’t scrub too hard, so that you don’t take the top layer of skin off either. A good, gentle soap and some warm water may be all your skin needs to get healthy and happy!
Also, FYI, a girl’s best friend especially if they have oily skin, isn’t diamonds – it’s blotting paper. These little miracle workers can fit in your pocket, and they’re an absolute life saver if you feel like you’re looking extra shiny without having purposefully adding highlighter to your face. These bad boys are specifically made to pat your face and soak up excess oils from your skin. While it may not fix the underlying issue of those glands, blotting papers will help you in a pinch.
Lastly, and probably most obviously, if your skin is super oily and won’t stop breaking out, it may be time to see a doctor. As much advice as we can give you online, the fact of the matter is, there are people out there that literally specialize in the type of skin that you have and the problems that it gives you. A professional like adermatologist will be able to look at you, your skin, and your lifestyle and let you know exactly what will be best to make your skin less oily and the best it can be. 
At the end of the day, we all have issues with our skin. Whether it’s because of our DNA, or because it’s just freaking hot outside, some of us have to deal with oily faces, which sometimes make us a little bit shinier than normal. That being said, however, know that there are a ton of solutions out there for you – over the counter and otherwise – and you’re going to look gorgeous no matter what!

This past week has been rather hard and long for me. I ultimately decided to get back on track with my wellness plan. My main wellness goal for 2021, is to indulge in myself more. I definitely am a firm believe in “as within, so without”. Do not be afraid to use salicylic acid during the day. I applied plenty of sunscreen afterwards as well! This is a GODSEND for clearing up acne and acne scarring. It’s by far the best acne treatment I’ve tried and its mostly due to the immediate results I get. This is a dry oil, so it should be used before a heavy moisturizer or sunscreen. THE BODY SHOP - Spa of the World Thai Makrut Lime Firming Oil is a staple in my night time routine. When I want to relax and really unwind I use a body roller with this oil. It smells like a fresh key lime pie and it’s so hydrating. This is great for firming, especially when paired with a body tool. What do you do for wellness?

I figured Black History Month was as good as any opportunity to talk about my self finding. Growing up in a small yet old family, I always had questions about my roots and family history. I also struggled with self conscious doubts about my appearance. Why is my nose this big? Why is my hair this curly? Why am I taller than average? These weighed heavy on my mind growing up because honestly, sticking out sucked. So, I finally dove deep into my family’s origin and decided to do an Ancestry DNA analysis. I immersed myself with every corner of the site. I only got the chance to finish my maternal grandmas side of the family tree, but even that has plenty of gaps. Yet, when I received my DNA results I was stoked. Then I realized, I don’t know much about any of these places. So I dug even deeper. I have a little journal of things I’ve learned and want to know, but this was quite the experience. It was heartbreaking and satisfying at the same time. I highly recommend for every race and background to do this DNA Test. The best part of this was scrolling through photos of the people of the respected countries I was DNA matched to. I swear I saw a girl who looked like me, but everyone else thinks I’m tripping lol. In the end, I’m satisfied with my results and findings. Relatively speaking, this way of self discovery has been the most effective.

That’d be great right? Well in taking those steps, I definitely recommend these amazing serums. I used this in place of my usual night time serum and boy did I notice a difference. I was so excited to try these out because I love moisturizers & I am always in search of a good one! These looked & sounded very promising! They’re from a woman owned company, completely natural, vegan, & cruelty free! However, I was quite disappointed. EARTH HARBOR - MERMAID MILK Nutrient Glow Moisturizer This moisturizer claims to give you a glow right away & it contains spirulina + matcha. I was excited about the matcha because it has so many amazing benefits for skin. It has a very whipped consistency which I like. However it always contains essential oils that were strong, although not toooo strong for my liking. But I’m really just not a fan of essential oils in my face creams. The moisturizer did make my skin appear a little brighter but the cream just sat on my face. All day long I could touch my face & still feel the cream sitting there! I hate that feeling! It also almost gave me a greasy appearance after a while? Not a fan. EARTH HARBOR - SIREN SILK Multi-Tasking Hydration Creme This one was absolutely awful. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It says to use it at night time & the apply it at least 5 minutes before bed so it can absorb on your face & not your pillow. It contains Sea Retinol + other Superherbs which normally make me love a product! But that just wasn’t enough here. First, when I put it on my face my eyes started to actually burn & I felt suffocated from the scent. It was THAT strong. Guys, I’m not being dramatic at all. The smell like attacked me it was crazy! I have never had something like that happen with a face cream! I couldn’t believe how strong the fragrance was. & to top it off, it wasn’t even a pretty smell. My husband described it as smelling like floor cleaner. But I powered through. The longer I had it on, the more “used” to the smell I got. So, I wore it overnight. But then I woke up even more upset with it! I had pilling all over my face. It almost looked like my face was peeling but it wasn’t, it was jus the cream. One thing I cannot stand about a moisturizer is pulling. That’s enough for me to throw it out! It also didn’t really even moisturize my face that well! All in all, I hated this experience. But if you want, you should try them out for yourself, don’t let my experience deter you from trying something new! I however, will be sticking with my Youth To The People Dream Mask & Superfood Whipped Moisturizer! Love those two!!
