In the interest of sustainability, overall health, and (trying) to help the world, Cherie wanted to start incorporating clean makeup products into our routines. It's daunting to think about all the repercussions that the beauty industry can have on the earth—from sourcing ingredients, to the ink on the boxes, and how most empty jars and bottles don't get recycled... It can get pretty overwhelming trying to learn more about why clean beauty is important. Our TL;DR for why it is important is this: there's so much that goes into creating a beauty product that when corners are cut for cheaper production, a lot of messy ingredients get into the mix. These ingredients can affect the health of your skin (and your body) over a long-period of time. So, we set out to swap old makeup for cleaner products, and this is what we thought. The Primer Swap Hourglass -> Juice Beauty by Jenny K. "I love how well the Juice Beauty primer works, and honestly it's better than the Hourglass one! While the Hourglass primer has a satiny-silky finish, Juice Beauty's is a bit more tacky, making it so perfect for my oily skin. An even better plus is that Juice Beauty's primer worked better in keeping my foundation in place after 8 hours. Considering my oily skin, Juice Beauty takes the cake. Clean makeup FTW!"

The Concealer SwapGlossier -> RMS Beauty by Lauren G. "A big problem area for me is dark under eye circles. A combination of bad sleep and simply getting older has caused my dark circles to worsen. My skin is pretty clear, so I don't wear foundation, which makes a good concealer really important for me; it has to conceal my dark circles AND blend in seamlessly with my bare face." "I really like Glossier's Stretch Concealer because it matches my skin tone well while having a really great texture for blending. My clean replacement for it is RMS' 'Un' Coverup - this concealer has natural oils in it like coconut and jojoba that help improve your skin while being worn! Makeup that doubles as skincare is something I can get behind. I love how well this conceals my dark circles, though it is oiler than Glossier's. The difference in appearance is minimal, which makes this swap an easy one to make."

The Shadow Primer SwapUrban Decay vs. Ilia by Korah R."One of the biggest issues I have with doing a full face of makeup is making sure my eyeshadow stays all day long. I have rather oily eyelids so this an even bigger problem for me than the average individual. I wanted so much to love the Ilia eyeshadow primer. It was silky and smooth and the applicator was great, but by midday my eyeshadow was creasing and struggling to hang on because it didn't set my eyelids as well as I was hoping. On the other hand, my typical Urban Decay primer set and kept my eyelids matte the whole day, and the pigment of my shadow held on the whole day as well. I'd love to back this clean beauty buy, but it just wasn't for me."

Donts of Exfoliation
Donts of Exfoliation
Absolutely do not over-exfoliate! Over-exfoliation can disrupt the skin barrier function by just simply breaking down too many skin cells and disrupting the moisture content on the epidermis. Often times, especially people with oily skin and acne prone believe exfoliating is going to answer all their acne problems, and go on scrubbing 3+ times a week or using an exfoliating mask too often. This is actually counter intuitive for acne as if can actually make you break out more, and it can create sensitivities you dont need. How do you know you’re over exfoliating? If your skin lets you know. Yes, very confusing, but the reality is some people can actually tolerate more acids and scrubs than others, and the best way to figure out how much your skin can take is to incorporate little by little, one product at a time. If your skin is going red for prolonged periods of time, or tingling, even burning, for long or for the entire duration of having the product on (ie. With a mask) you’re probably overdoing it. Another way to prevent over exfoliation is just knowing when to stop. If your skin is happy and glowy and not breaking out, you may not need that new glycolic acid mask, adding an exfoliating mask to your regimen may just tip the scales into skin barrier disruption and dehydration! Be careful with exfoliation!
$103 vs $29: Can this vintage gem be duped?

ESTĒE LAUDER - Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II VS MISSHA - Time Revolution Night Repair Borabit Ampoule HONEST FEMME FINDS: Estée Lauder’s night serum was the first thing I ever took from my mom’s vanity (apparently similar to how others discovered it) and immediately grew a liking to the formula. The amber bottle never told me what was so great about it but I knew it was something special. After eagerly using up the 30ml in a month, I was excited to repurchase but horrified to find that a 1.7ml bottle would cost $100+. I came to terms with the fact that I just did not have the means to use it daily. At airports, I was that person who waded through the duty free section to use a sample of this serum, leaving my face supple for a red eye flight. I also noticed the patented ingredient, bífida ferment lysate. When I saw recent videos of the many dupes that have come out since Estée Lauder patented the formulation in 2008, I immediately felt compelled to try it. Here are my first impressions. MISSHA - Time Revolution Night Repair Borabit Ampoule IMPRESSIONS: Wow, it’s way larger of a bottle than I expected, looks super luxurious too! The color looks the same (peachy), consistency upon eye-balling looks identical, and even the smell reminds me of the OG. Wow. On the face, it feels slightly oilier/tackier than I remembered Estée Lauder’s to be but overall it feels similar. Softened my skin immediately. The next morning, after using it as my last step, my skin still felt soft and definitely looks brighter in the mirror. I can’t say for long term effects but so far so good! INGREDIENTS: Second ingredient is bífida ferment lysate (a probiotic that has anti-UV damage properties, helps w/ skin barrier), but also in addition Niacinamide, fermented and fruit extracts with anti-aging properties that the original doesn’t have. PRICE: $29 on Amazon prime vs $103 for the original. Imma stop there. REFLECTIONS: When I was wowed by Estée Lauder’s vintage gem, it was years ago, before I truly started my skincare journey. My skin has improved drastically since I incorporated Vit C, HA, AHA and retinol (even SPF!) into my life and I’m wondering if I’ll feel as in awe by bífida ferment lysate as I once did. I guess I will find out if I really NEED this ingredient in my routine. Updates to come! Cheers to ingredients sounding like congenital conditions🥂
Mascara for Allergenic and Eczema Prone Skin
Mascara for Allergenic and Eczema Prone Skin
I recently started having some health problems and started developing allergic reactions to most mascaras and eye makeup. Basically my eyes would get itchy, eczema breakouts, flake, and my eyelashes would fall out in clumps (I lead a glamorous life, I know). The only mascara I found I could use without issue was Lush’s mascara and I just stuck to that baby until (whomp-whomp) they discontinued it. I think I’ll do a post on my favorite discontinued products later (RIP). I heard some good things about friends about Physician’s Formula and that it’s formulated with sensitive and allergenic skin in mind. I tried this mascara yesterday and wore it a full day full of errands and sweating and it stays on and no allergic reaction!!! Like all more plant-derived mascaras, the formula is more runny and can be quite wet upon application but their brush really helps keep the lashes from sticking together. If you’re going to compare this to some other mascaras on the market (like They’re Real!, Better Than Sex, etc.) you’ll probably not be happy with these aspects of the formula BUT if you’re like me and haven’t even wore mascara for over six months due to severe allergic reactions and eczema flares this is a damn lifesaver. I have very blonde body hair and have missed having visible curled lashes! Love this product! PHYSICIANS FORMULA - Organic Wear Natural Origin Mascara In Black

Have you ever wanted to try out a fun hair color but was too timid of the upkeep or maybe your workplace wouldn’t allow it?? With one wash you will see color in your hair! I use it about once a week or if I know I’m going to be doing pictures (or going out when we were able to lol) ⭐️This is a SEMI PERMANENT hair color, meaning it will stain the cuticle (or outside layer) AND partially enter into the cortex (second layer) of the hair! Since it is a semi permanent color, it washes out very fast but DEPENDING on the color of your current hair and what color shampoo you choose, will impact the results of the final look! ⭐️ 💛If you have blonde hair, it will be more true to color and the pastel colors are for you! 🤎If you have light brown or red hair, the medium to darker colors will work for you! 🖤Dark brown or black hair, it could potentially change your hair color but only slightly! ‼️IMPORTANT THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO USE LIGHTEN OR BLEACH HAIR AT HOME! BE CREATIVE, HAVE FUN & REMEMBER ITS JUST HAIR! 🤍 So if you are currently at home on quarantine, this is such a fun way to spice up your hair without hurting it in any way! Is your skin craaazy dry? Read my do’s and don’t
Is your skin craaazy dry? Read my do’s and don’t
I’ve got very dry skin in the colder months. I also live in a dry environment. I’ve put together some general do’s and donts that work for me when my skin is seriously dry. Now, please note that I enjoy 99% of the products I’m going to mention, but some I just have to reserve for using in warmer months when my skin is less dry. DO pay attention to what kind of first cleanse you use. I like FORMULA 10.0.6 - Bare Face Beauty Skin-Hydrating Cleansing Oil because it breaks down my makeup and leaves my skin feeling soft. DON’T use a first cleanse that dries your skin out like the GOOD MOLECULES - Instant Cleansing Balm (a little bit drying) DO look at ingredients lists and brand descriptions of cleansers. Opt for something with a gel or milky texture that either doesn’t lather are all, or barely lathers. I enjoy the bareMinerals - PURENESS GEL CLEANSER (but not if you’re sensitive to coconut). DON’T use a cleanser with harsh acids, such as salicylic acid in the TRULY - CBD Jelly Anti Acne Facial Cleanser , because they can dry out your skin even more. DO use a hydrating toner. I love the PAULA'S CHOICE - Resist Advanced Replenshing Toner because it contains hyaluronic acid and has a soothing, milky texture. DON’T use toners with astringent properties or essential oils like the MARIO BADESCU - Witch Hazel & Lavender Toner (I steaigjt is just don’t really like this even when my skin isn’t super dry). Toners with those ingredients can dry your skin out further. DO layer and mix serums (make sure you do some research first!). I enjoy the Wyldflower Labs - Sunshine Serum - Multitasking Day Repair Serum and LILY SADO - Green Tea + Vitamin C Super Serum . DO use some chemical exfoliants when experiencing a breakout, but be careful to use a concentrated spot application. I like the PAULA'S CHOICE - SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA LIQUID EXFOLIANT because it is effective and can be easily applied in an affected area. I use this 1-3x/wk in the PM. DON’T use harsh chemical exfoliants and don’t use them too frequently. The YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner is very strong. It can cause irritation, especially on dry areas, and if used to often has caused white heads. DO moisturize! I love the pixi - Rose Ceramide Cream when I have stubborn dry patches that won’t go away. I also like the unscented, soothing GOOD MOLECULES - Silicone-Free Priming Moisturizer . DON’T use a moisturizer that’s not geared towards extra dry skin like the Clark's Botanicals - Jasmine Vital Cream While this is a nice moisturizer, its light gel texture is more suited for normal-oily skin, or dry skin in the summer. #CherieCreator
