One place in your home that never quite gets the attention it needs is your makeup kit. Do you remember the last time you wore that scented glitter gel? Is that lipstick so old, it might actually be retro? March 2nd is National Old Stuff Day- what better time is there to let your friends here at Cherie help you get your kit squeaky clean, safe, and lean? We all have those beloved tried-and-true products that we save until we are scraping the jar to get the last drop. They make clutter, make messes, but did you know they can make you sick? Saying goodbye to old products is hard, and replacing them can be frustrating if the brand or color is no longer available. It can also be an unexpected expense if you have to start from scratch. It is, however, an unfortunate and necessary evil for healthy, happy skin. Makeup, not unlike that yogurt sitting in the back of your fridge, has an expiration date. Dates will vary by product, type, and what they are made of. As they age, the materials they are made up of will break down, and the chemical components may cause rashes, outbreaks, and irritation. Much of the time, as they dry, they become either difficult or impossible to apply, especially in liquid form. Pigments may also settle away from what they are suspended in (e.g., oils), and may not mix correctly again as they once did. Worse still, especially with eye products and makeup brushes and sponges, the bacterial buildup may occur, and enter the skin through scratches, etc., causing potentially dangerous infections. Not sure where to start? Follow our handy guide! Step 1- Look at the LabelDid you know many cosmetics put the expiration date on the label? It is not obvious, but it can often be found near the bar code of the product and looks like an open jar with a number on it. This is called the Period after Opening, or PAO symbol. It indicates the number of months a product can be safely used after opening it (e.g., 6 = 6 months, 24 = two years, etc.). These logos are required by the US Food and Drug Administration, as well as the European Commission, so it is highly likely that they will be visible on your favorite product. Step 2- No Expiration Date Listed? Consider How It’s AppliedIf no expiration date is visible, think about how the product is applied. If it is one you apply directly to a "wet" place, like the eyes or lips, it is highly likely that there is an increase for the risk of bacteria to grow in it over a period of time. For example, with a mascara wand, you are introducing whatever is on your lashes into the entire tube of product, then sealing it in a moist place, allowing it to multiply. This is not as big a concern for powder-based products, because you use a tool to apply them, and they are dry, which reduces the risk for bacterial growth. Step 3- Remember, Powder Has Staying PowerProducts like shadows, blushes, and bronzers generally have 24-month (two years) expiration dates.Step 4- Don’t Forget, Creamy Can Be DreamyCream-based products like shadows, blushes, and foundations will last between 12-18 months (1-1.5 years), depending on their formulation. Step 5- Check Your Foundation- You Can Only Conceal So Much For So LongOil-free foundations and concealers will last between will last between 12-18 months (1-1.5 years), depending on their formulation. Step 4- Lose that LippyLipstick and lip liners, unfortunately, have the shortest shelf life of lip products and should be thrown away after 12 months. Lip glosses have a slightly longer shelf life- between 18-24 months (1.5-2 years). If it has wand applicator, make sure to clean the tip regularly to prevent the transmission of bacteria. Chapsticks tend to last even a bit longer- around 2-3 years. Bacteria may build up in and around the cap and application area. If it smells different or there has been a change in the original color, throw it away. Better to be safe than sorry. Step 5- Aye, Aye, Aye- Those Eye Products Have to GO! Perhaps the most disappointing of all of these is the shelf life for eye products. Not only do they dry out and become chunky and flaky quickly, but they are also the riskiest to use beyond their expiration date. Liquid or gel liners and mascaras should be disposed of within three months of purchase. There is a small consolation prize; however- pencil liners have a shelf life of two years. Your favorite brow pencil is safe! …For now…Step 6- Apply the Same Rules to Lotions, Cleansers, and TreatmentsThe PAO logo is the same for your skincare regimen products. If you are unsure how long you have had it, and you suspect it’s been longer than 6 months, replace it.Step 7- Show Your Tools Some LoveBrushes, blenders, and sponges should be cleaned regularly to prevent product buildup, breakouts, and bacterial infection. If they smell, are torn, or have lost their shape after use, replace them. In general, sponges should be replaced every 3-6 months. The rubber grips on eyelash curlers should also be cleaned and regularly replaced, a fact that is easily overlooked. Do you have something you already love that we haven’t included here? Wednesday Wellness 🙏🏾
This past week has been rather hard and long for me. I ultimately decided to get back on track with my wellness plan. My main wellness goal for 2021, is to indulge in myself more. I definitely am a firm believe in “as within, so without”. I started my day with: #Four Sigmatic - Mushroom Elixir Mix with Chaga[products]#[FiveStars] I have been getting back into adaptogen and herbal medicine. What we put into our bodies is just as important as what goes on the outside. Adaptogens are apart of ancient medicinal traditions traced all over the world. I also drink Tulsi “Holy Basil” Tea. If you need a pick me up or emotional boost I highly recommend! SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil is my treatment of choice I used during the day. Do not be afraid to use salicylic acid during the day. I applied plenty of sunscreen afterwards as well! This is a GODSEND for clearing up acne and acne scarring. It’s by far the best acne treatment I’ve tried and its mostly due to the immediate results I get. This is a dry oil, so it should be used before a heavy moisturizer or sunscreen. THE BODY SHOP - Spa of the World Thai Makrut Lime Firming Oil is a staple in my night time routine. When I want to relax and really unwind I use a body roller with this oil. It smells like a fresh key lime pie and it’s so hydrating. This is great for firming, especially when paired with a body tool. What do you do for wellness?

Black Owned Makeup Look
So I decided to use the products I pictured in my first photo (minus my highlight shade and lipstick) I used the #Ace Beaute - Nostalgia Palette[products]#[FiveStars] for my entire eye look. I definitely enjoyed these products. My only advice is to shake the UOMA BEAUTY - Say What?! Foundation before use (because it can come out watery) but the coverage is absolutely flawless. I was shocked with the consistency the coverage I got. What’s your favorite black owned brands? (I do not own right to the song)
Clear Hydrated Skin The Clean Way✨
Staying in the trend of clean beauty, I have found an amazing product to add to my everyday routine. Odacité SKINCARE - Blue Aura Cleansing Water This is a cleansing water that is marketed to use in place of your cleanser for a “quick” clean. When looking for a good cleansing water, you want one that is hydrating and gets your face clean. Keep in mind not all cleansing waters are designed to clean makeup (I highly recommend a cleansing balm and cleanser). About This Brand: ✨Vegan ✨Cruelty Free ✨Certified Organic ✨ NO: Fillers | Parabens | Nanoparticles | Petrochemicals | PEG | Synthetic perfumes | Dyes | Phenoxyethanol. This cleansing water is so hydrating and satisfying to use. It smells very fresh and a little goes a long way. What is very important to me is my dry spot aren’t tight or irritated. I have been using this day and night and have seen amazing results acne and skin barrier wise. I included this in my routine after a regular cleanser and before my serums. So essentially, I use this as a “toner”. I do this to clean up anything my cleanse left behind, or the cleanser itself. INGREDIENTS: ✨Tumeric: Amazing for hyperpigmentation and overall skin brightness ✨Holy Basil: I drink the tea and can vouch this is an amazing adaptogen that can overall benefit every aspect of your life. It combats aging and free radical damage. ✨Neem: great anti aging ingredient that helps protects your skin barrier. ✨Aloe Vera Juice: this is great for your skin barrier overall. It hydrated, protects and brightens. I highly recommend this cleansing water and it is on sale for $9 at Boxycharm Pop Up 🥰🥰
