Celebrated in many countries around the world, Lunar New Year is a time to bring in new prosperity and luck for the upcoming year. While the beginning of the year is always a fresh start, this years is especially so because it's the beginning of a new decade, and, the Year of The Rat, which is the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac. To honor this celebration, we're highlighting beauty traditions from countries that celebrate this beautiful holiday. In this post, Cherie team member Kelly Chen shares her experience getting a Vietnamese Facial Reflexology treatment, A.K.A Dien Chan Zone. A New Discovery... For MeWhen you think of Vietnam and beauty, do any particular rituals come to your head? No? Because same. We hear so much about trending beauty and ancient rituals from Eastern parts of Asia, and we rarely hear about any from the Southeastern part. So when I discovered Vietnamese Facial Reflexology, I knew it was something to be experienced. World War II RootsTucked away in Vietnam's history is the practice of facial reflexology. The idea being that your face is a map for your internal organs (which I've definitely heard before!) and therefore you can help appease internal issues, like indigestion, within through stimulation of the face. This practice uses tools with various points and ends to stimulate the face and subsequently the internal organs. Back in WWII, tools like those pictured below were more accessible to women and easier to craft than creams, potions, and lotions (note that the tools used in Vietnam were much more invasive, like needles and such). Think of it like this; if I have a ton of pimples on my left cheek and that possibly signifies that I have a spleen issues, stimulating those points on my face may also stimulate my spleen, and therefore helping to clear up any unwanted blemishes.

An Italian TwistVietnamese Facial Reflexology gained popularity in Italy, where they modified the practice to be less invasive. Instead of using harsh points and needles, similar to those used in acupuncture, to stimulate the face points, they rounded the edges to make the practice much more relaxing. With this modification, Dien Chan Zone was born, which is the official name of the Italian method of Vietnamese Facial Reflexology. In my treatment, the practice was westernized even further by combining it with a standard facial. ASMR But For The Face? My ExperienceMy Dien Chan Zone experience started with a standard facial—cleanse, steam, extraction—you know the deal. At the time of my treatment, I was experiencing an allergic reaction around my mouth from antibiotics that I had just finished, prescribed to me because of a stomach bug.The esthetician drew a map for me pointing out some of my concerns and the internal organs they were related to. The allergic reaction around my mouth was attributed to digestion issues, which makes sense since I just finished a round of antibiotics. She worked on me with her reflexology tools for about 20-30 minutes and it was SO relaxing. Seriously, like ASMR for your face. The motions were so soothing, and so gentle that I actually fell asleep while she worked on my face 😅

After my treatment, I felt very relaxed and my skin felt super smooth, thanks to the extraction and exfoliation she did before the reflexology. As for any benefits from the facial reflexology, I didn't see any differences in my skin that I would correlate to that. I will say, I would do this again because I've never been more relaxed during a facial than when she was using her reflexology tools on me. More than anything, this was a great way to show myself some self love! The esthetician even shared with me some facial reflexology techniques I could do on my own at home, and where I could even buy the tools. Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone. If you do a quick search on "Dien Chan Zone facials" you can find an esthetician who studied this practice near you.

Never Give Up On Your Skin
Never Give Up On Your Skin
Looking at my unfiltered photo you may be thinking that I don’t suffer from cystic acne but I do and I did. In my early teens my skin was PERFECT. By college, I would get 1-2 pimples near the time where my red seas be flowing. In my early 20s and as I’ve aged it got worse. I experienced enlargement of pores, cystic acne, blackheads on a repeat vicious cycle. Now in my late 20’s I combat all of those knowing that I’m a combination type. I did Seeing as my skincare was considered a bar of soap, I set out on my skin journey. Trying products that were absolutely no good. Yes, I trotted to Target and have picked up Clean & Clear. I’ve gone down the road and used the St. Ives Scrub 👀 Do I have to wash make up off every night? 😖 I remember feeling lost and down in the dumps, frustrated because I couldn’t see results. Mistaking tightness as a measure of effectivity, I suffered from dryness. Causing my skin to produce more oils, I made my pores bigger. 😟 To this day my pores on my nose and cheeks are still very visible to me. Popped too many a pimple because I couldn’t resist.✖️✖️✖️ I do Throughout every mistake I became motivated to learn. This was my skin and certainly if it’s mine then it’s within my control. I obsessed because I feel that the more time I spend on it, the more beneficial it will be for me and my well being. Sometimes that means breaking the bank 🏦 and sometimes you put on your cheap skates. 💨 Through my visits at the dermatologist and guidance from my mom, I’ve come to accept so much despite feeling like giving up. 🔚 Lessons Along The Way No one is going to get as close to my face as I do to a mirror before my shower 🛀. Unless you’re my husband who smooches me and always tells me I’m beautiful. 🥺 No one is going to have that much motivation to look at my picture and zoom x100000000 magnification 🔍 on it just to count my pores. Just because it says pore clearing or acne treatment whatever marketing buzzword does not mean that it’s good for you. There are skincare products that can make it worse. Even just by going with good reviews, checking the ingredients is worth the while. Put those ugly products into permanent purgatory. 🗑 After enough time and patience, results will slowly show more and more each day. Scars that existed no longer existed. Deeper scars that start to look smaller. There are no days off to application or improving my routine. You will CONQUER and tame this beast you call skin! ⚔️ I’m glad that there’s a medium to express what’s helped me along the way. I’m also here to learn more from the community. All I know is what I’ve learnt so far and I’m so happy to share that I couldn’t believe this is my 50th post on Cherie! 🥳 Accept and love your skin, show yourself the patience you deserve. Thank you so much for reading. But most of all beside those lessons, I should have never forgotten the sunblock. 🤣 You live and you learn.

Be sure to pause, rewatch and pay close attention! I didn’t expose my camera correctly so the skin tones might look off but I promise that it won’t compromise the final results of what the shadow will look like in person! It will still look like the photo I previously posted of this look! The more pigment you place on your eye, the more it’ll show. This video shows the basic steps of what I did to create this look 😄 Feel free to ask me any extra questions if you get confused!! To shave, or not to shave?
To shave, or not to shave?
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the question, “Will my hair grow back thicker?” When discussing shaving ones face, or even just body hair in general, so I decided to make this post. Just a little preamble here.. I myself have facial hair. No, I do not have PCOS, I’m just a hairy lady 🤷🏻‍♀️ and I’ve learned how to accept it over the years because trust me when I tell you it was a self-esteem battle! I’ve tried every single hair removal product and method out there, and I always go back to what’s tried and true; shaving. But more importantly, I’ve done lots of research and spoken to my dermatologist about this myth as well, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a pile of 💩 With a little help from Dr. Kristeen Cherney who wrote, Shaving Does Not Affect the Thickness or Rate of Hair Growth for Healthline, I’d like to break down some myths. MYTH #1: hair will grow differently when shaved and even be more coarse So this is actually half true and here’s why. As Dr. Cherney puts it, “Unshaven hair has a finer, blunter tip,” so when your hair grows back from shaving, you’ll end up seeing the coarser base as opposed to the “softer, thinner part that will eventually grow back,” if, of course, you let it! MYTH #2: hair grows back darker The new hair may be more thick, but it’s not because of shaving. Remember, this hair hasn’t yet been exposed to the elements or soaps or even chemicals that we use on the daily, which if you didn’t know, actually lightens the hair. MYTH #3 (the best for last): hair will grow back thicker when shaved, especially on the face Let’s break down how our hair grows so you can get a better understanding of why this statement is false. According to Dr. Cherney, “It takes about 1 month for body hair to reach its full length. This is why body hair is more shorter than the hair on our heads.” If you look at the image above, you can get a better understanding of the hair follicle, which is where our hair starts. One photo shows a blade ready to glide over top of the dead hair on the surface of the skin and the second photo shows what it looks like after. As you can see, all shaving did was, and for a lack of a better word, trim the hair! It didn’t actually get rid of the entire hair from the hair follicle. So to conclude with the words of Dr. Cherney, “Since shaving doesn’t remove hair under the skin like other hair removal methods do, it’s impossible for you to affect its colour, thickness or rate of growth.” There ya have it. So it’s safe to say, go ahead and shave! Don’t let a silly myth stop you. Just make sure you do it properly so that you don’t damage that beautiful skin 😌
RENTINOIDs: the BEST super ingredient
RENTINOIDs: the BEST super ingredient
🌸 note: two of the products in my picture are prescription only, high grade retinoids. but i have tagged their drug store dupes that are the SAME product with a lower concentration 🌸 WHAT IS A RETINOL? in the most basic form, a retinoid is a form of VITAMIN A which encourages skin cells to break down and turn over faster, resulting in reduction of acne, wrinkles, dark spots and signs of aging. It promotes collagen production, unclogs pores, and reduces scarring. its actually thickens skin, preventing wrinkles from forming ☀️☀️ALWAYS USE AN SPF WITH RETINOIDS☀️☀️ because your skin cells are dying and regenerating so quickly, you are much more prone to sunburns. And we know sunburns are literally life-threatening they vary HIGHLY in strength (weak to strong list) - retinoid esters: The weakest version of a retinoid, but is good for sensitive skin, surface level retinol: found in a variety of products, works on the cellular level of skin - adapalene (differin): Used to be prescription only but can now be found in a low-dose age in most drug stores. penetrates deeper and slows the production of sebum with faster cell turnover - retinoic acid (Retin-A/tretinoin): works deeper in the skin, can produce overnight results in the form of dead skin peeling. Very advanced skin cell turnover, as it penetrates and stimulates cell death and production. Skin can become very sensitive, irritated , and red - isotretinoin (Accutane): essentially sebum production is very limited and skin cell turnover is dramatically increased. on ingestible medication that will make your skin peel, dry out, and really kill acne. It’s prescription only but very effective. 🌸 products i use! prescription only: ADAPALENE 0.3% dupe: DIFFERIN - DIFFERIN Acne Treatment Gel ADAPALENE is the primary form of retinol in this product. this has been my go to product for years, it makes me less sun sensitive then Retin-A 0.05%, while still giving me excellent skin cell turnover and anti aging benefits. It helped my skin go from absolute shiz to a much cleaner glowing face (see 4th pic) prescription only: RETIN-A 0.05% dupe: janssen - Retino-A 0.05% Tretinoin Cream TRETENOIN is the primary form of retinoid in this product. these two may actually be the same product, but the one that I have I know is usually prescription grade. it will make your skin peel overnight, so I use it as a spot treatment if I get any deep set nodular acne. i used this for a couple years but it made me really sun sensitive, it is very strong! luxury brand: SUNDAY RILEY - A+ High-Dose Retinol Serum RETINOL ESTER and CoQ10 are the primary forms of retinal in this product. this claims to have a 6.5% blend of stabilize retinoids and botanical retinoid alternative extracts. I think that it is incredibly overpriced for what it is. There are very similar dupes such as those from the inkey list and the ordinary
