Is the Hype Real? We Tested 5 Popular Primers Designed for Creating a Flawless LookTo not prime is a crime! We put the five most popular primers under the microscope to separate the legit from the ones you can forget.
We are always chasing a flawless makeup look, Cherie's editors are no exception. A product should be added as a part of your skincare routine: it can prevent endless touch-ups and smooth out those pesky flaws. Yeah, primer is worth to note and talk about. Using a right primer is a critical step in getting our makeup to perform the way it should be. If you're a makeup junkie like us, you know that there are various primers out there who are claiming to be the masters of covering up large pores, preventing smudged eye makeup, or fixing other complexion problems. To verify whether they really work, we specially purchased these popular word-of-mouth primers and put them through the gauntlet! 12-Hour Shine Control / 16-Hour Wear As the shine control member of the Too Faced PEACH Makeup line, this primer is packed in a cute pink tube and is said to be a superstar.FIRST IMPRESSION: * Texture and Color: Creamy but not thick, pinky-beige color * Smell: Peachy but a bit artificial * Sensation: Cooling * Finished Look: Matte skin without dryness HOW DID WE TEST IT: * Step 1: Added one pump of Primed & Peachy Cooling Matte Perfecting Primer on the left part of the test area, meanwhile kept the right side without application. * Step 2: Then, we applied a layer of Jasmine body oil from Herbivore on the whole test area to simulate an extremely oily skin condition. RESULT: After waiting for around 10 minutes, we covered the test area with two blotting papers. The left blotting paper appeared to be less oily than the right oily patch. RATING: 4 Stars (Well done, Too Faced!) Blurs Aways Pores and Imperfects with Layers of SilkA best-seller at Sephora, it claims to 'diminish the look of pores, fines lines, and imperfections.'FIRST IMPRESSION: Texture and Color: Balmy with a pink tone Smell: A fresh floral scent Sensation: Thick but absorbs in minutes Finished Look: Nourished and glowing skin HOW DID WE TEST IT: * Step 1: Yeah, we know those two wooden sticks seem a bit odd, but this was our way of imitating uneven skin accurately! The surface of the wood mimics the ventilation, absorption, lines, and imperfections of textured skin. * Step 2: We applied a layer of primer on the left wooden stick and kept the right one clean, then we put foundation on both sticks. RESULT: The test results surprised us! Not only did it help with the texture problems, but Silk Canvas Protective Primer also helped bring out the makeup’s pigmentation! RATING: 5 Stars (The hype is real, approved!) All Day Hydration and All Day HoldWinning the Allure Best of Beauty award, this newly dropped primer by Milk Makeup is blowing up on YouTube right now and has a ton of positive reviews.

Milk MAKEUPHydro Grip PrimerFIRST IMPRESSION: Texture and Color: Translucent gel with a green tone Smell: Fragrance-free Sensation: Watery and cooling Finished Look: Hydrating and appearance of soft skin HOW DID WE TEST IT: * Step 1: Added one pump of the primer on the upper part of the arm and kept the lower part naked. * Step 2: Using a moisture detector to test just how hydrated it left our skin. RESULT: On the area with bare skin, we got a reading of 11% moisture on the skin detector, while the area with primer had a much higher moisture level, a whopping 19%! RATING: 4.5 Stars (Congratulations Hydro Grip Primer, you proved yourself!) Conceal Redness EffortlesslyIt’s said to conceal redness, and repel water, so your foundation lasts longer. Such a big-name brand should stand up to the challenge. As one of the OG primer products, we challenged Hourglass to our no-filter test.
HOURGLASSVeil Mineral PrimerFIRST IMPRESSION: Texture and Color: White fluid texture Smell: A light mineral scent Sensation: Thin and smooth, but a bit of a silicon feel Finished Look: Matte and even-textured HOW DID WE TEST IT: * Step 1: Unfortunately for our colleague, and much to our delight, she had broken out with spots that day and had visible red spots that needed concealing. Just in time to put this primer to the test! * Step 2: Applied primer to the areas with redness. RESULT: The redness and visibility of acne improved significantly, giving Cherie’s skin a brightening effect. However, the luminous effect did bring out some white casting, which isn’t ideal for those with a darker skin tone. RATING: 3.5 Stars (Helpful to some, harmful to others!) Ensures Vibrant, Crease-Free Wear for Up to 24 HoursDon't let the festive fun packaging fool you! This Urban Decay Primer claims to help you 'stay vibrant and crease-free,' a limited-edition Honey Eyeshadow Primer Potion Ornament from Urban Decay, this holiday exclusive looked right up our alley!
URBAN DECAYHoney Eyeshadow Primer Potion OrnamentFIRST IMPRESSION: Texture and Color: Gold-toned liquid with glitters Smell: Odorless Sensation: Weightless on skin Finished Look: Glittery, matte finish HOW DID WE TEST IT: * Step 1: To test the full power of this primer, we chose a very pigmented Tom Ford eyeshadow, shade 26, to get a good sense of staying power. * Step 2: We layered the Urban Decay Honey Eyeshadow Primer on the left part of the test area and kept the right test area naked. * Step 3: We applied the same amount of eyeshadow on both sides and observed the difference in pigmentation. * Step 4: Scrubbed both test areas to see how the primer would work to keep its long-lasting effect. RESULT: The area with primer obviously worked better, bringing out exceptionally clearer pigmentation, especially when the shadows had glitter and shimmer or when it was a darker shade. The long-lasting effect also impressed us! RATING: 5 Stars (Magical formula! In Urban Decay, we trust!) Have you tried any of these primers before? Tell us what you think about our little experiment, and if you got similar results? Want us to put other brands or products to the test? Tell us and Cherie will get back to the lab!
MilkMakeup - Blur Stick - great if you're in a hurry. I will say I've had issues with it clumping on my skin where there is more texture, so it's not my "go to gal" Urban Decay Primer Potion (anti-aging formula) When I'm going to wear a heavier eye look, this is usually the one I reach for. It holds the look in place really well and helps prevent creasing Tatcha Silk Canvas - my Holy Grail of priming. This stuff is magic. It's the closest to perfect I've found so far. The consistency is smooth and silky, and leaves your skin feeling the same. Not only does it prime your skin well but it also improves your skin over time. .
$103 vs $29: Can this vintage gem be duped?
ESTĒE LAUDER - Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II VS MISSHA - Time Revolution Night Repair Borabit Ampoule HONEST FEMME FINDS: Estée Lauder’s night serum was the first thing I ever took from my mom’s vanity (apparently similar to how others discovered it) and immediately grew a liking to the formula. The amber bottle never told me what was so great about it but I knew it was something special. After eagerly using up the 30ml in a month, I was excited to repurchase but horrified to find that a 1.7ml bottle would cost $100+. I came to terms with the fact that I just did not have the means to use it daily. At airports, I was that person who waded through the duty free section to use a sample of this serum, leaving my face supple for a red eye flight. I also noticed the patented ingredient, bífida ferment lysate. When I saw recent videos of the many dupes that have come out since Estée Lauder patented the formulation in 2008, I immediately felt compelled to try it. Here are my first impressions. MISSHA - Time Revolution Night Repair Borabit Ampoule IMPRESSIONS: Wow, it’s way larger of a bottle than I expected, looks super luxurious too! The color looks the same (peachy), consistency upon eye-balling looks identical, and even the smell reminds me of the OG. Wow. On the face, it feels slightly oilier/tackier than I remembered Estée Lauder’s to be but overall it feels similar. Softened my skin immediately. The next morning, after using it as my last step, my skin still felt soft and definitely looks brighter in the mirror. I can’t say for long term effects but so far so good! INGREDIENTS: Second ingredient is bífida ferment lysate (a probiotic that has anti-UV damage properties, helps w/ skin barrier), but also in addition Niacinamide, fermented and fruit extracts with anti-aging properties that the original doesn’t have. PRICE: $29 on Amazon prime vs $103 for the original. Imma stop there. REFLECTIONS: When I was wowed by Estée Lauder’s vintage gem, it was years ago, before I truly started my skincare journey. My skin has improved drastically since I incorporated Vit C, HA, AHA and retinol (even SPF!) into my life and I’m wondering if I’ll feel as in awe by bífida ferment lysate as I once did. I guess I will find out if I really NEED this ingredient in my routine. Updates to come! Cheers to ingredients sounding like congenital conditions🥂
The Do’s and Don’ts for Oily, Acne Prone Skin
Knowing your skin type and skin condition is the first step to treating it. I personally have dehydrated yet oily acne prone skin. The right type of products in a routine can make a huge difference. *Disclaimer: I love all the products above except the Clinique toner (Dont use this please). I will explain below why things are good or bad for acne. Step 1: Cleanse Do - Use gel cleanser like the FARMACY - Clean Bee Ultra Gentle Facial Cleanser . The gel formula will deep cleanse the face without stripping. Don’t - Use a cream cleanser like the GEORGETTE KLINGER - Green Tea Cream Cleanser . This is more geared towards dry skin. It will cleanse and hydrate but won’t give you the deep cleanse oily/acne prone skin needs. Step 2: Treat Do - Use a product with salicylic acid like PAULA'S CHOICE - SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA LIQUID EXFOLIANT . Salicylic acid is oil soluble and will dive deep into your pores breaking up any sebum or debris. Don’t - Use something with detnatured alcohol like the CLINIQUE - Clarifying Lotion 3 For Combination Oily Skin . It may feel good at first but the alcohol is stripping your skin and does more harm than good. In the end your face will over compensate for the stripping effect and produce more oil. Step 3: Moisturize Do - Use a gel moisturizer like the FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair BarriAIR Cream . I love this because it is free of a lot of skin irritants like fragrance and dyes. The gel formula won’t feel too heavy on the skin but will give you all the hydration benefits you need. Don’t- Use a heavy, cream moisturizer like the Milk MAKEUP - Vegan Milk Moisturizer . Heavy creams are more geared for dry skin. For oily skin it will just sit on top potentially clogging pores (plus I do believe this has some comedogenic ingredients). These are basic steps I’ve been using for a while to make my skin routine the best is can be for my skin concern. If you have any questions about any steps or products let me know below. 🖤 /*some products gifted
4 VITAMIN C FAVES 💕 Mini Reviews
Vit C should be the most commonly purchased skincare serum. There are so many reasons why a Vitamin C serum is important to use and it's basically a cure-all beauty product. Most serums help with sun damage, fine lines, acne scars, under eye bags, free-radicals and antioxidants. These are the 4 serums I own and love! I wanted to make a post about each of these in case you need help finding the right one. I received @thrivecausemetics Liquid Light Therapy as PR in April (I believe). I can not obsess enough over it. This one is 100% my favorite one I've tried, there is just something about the texture and consistency that feels so good ($59). I love this because it brightens the skin with red and blue light therapy to stimulate collage production and dramatically reduce wrinkles and reveal clear skin @summerfridays CC Me ($64) is next up on my list of faves. This one is also formulated with squalane to boost hydration while sealing in moisture and a peptide complex to help improve with elasticity and firmness. I find that this serum as well as the next one I am going to talk about are really good at brightening dull skin or if you have a lot of hyperpigmentation and use these twice a day, I do find that it truly helps combat it. I love @farmacybeauty lately! I am obsessed. I had a sample of the Very Cherry Bright 15% Clean Vitamin C Serum and once I finished I was really reaching for more, so I caved and purchased a full size ($62) I find this one to be an interesting formula because it has 4 forms of Vitamin C. They use Acerola Cherry Extract which is one of the richest sources of NATURAL vitamin C to known to reduce signs of aging. If we want to talk about funky formulas, nothing could beat @volitionbeauty Strawberry-C Serum ($42). This formula is powered by Strawberry Fruit & Seed Extract to help brighten dull skin as well as unclogging pores and remove excess oil. This was the first full sized Vitamin C I purchased, mainly because of the reviews and the price! Although I no longer reach for this one as much, I do find if you want a great started serum or you aren't looking to spend a lot - this one does the job!
Viral Celeb Luxury Colorwash 🌺
Have you ever wanted to try out a fun hair color but was too timid of the upkeep or maybe your workplace wouldn’t allow it?? OR If you already have fun colored hair, do you hate how fast it washes out???? * I do!* Then you TOTALLY need to try the Viral Celeb Luxury Colorwash! 🌈🌈🌈 This COLORFUL shampoo is meant to add in or refresh any unicorn 🦄, mermaid🧜🏼♀️, galaxy🪐 hair your heart desires! With one wash you will see color in your hair! I use it about once a week or if I know I’m going to be doing pictures (or going out when we were able to lol) ⭐️This is a SEMI PERMANENT hair color, meaning it will stain the cuticle (or outside layer) AND partially enter into the cortex (second layer) of the hair! Since it is a semi permanent color, it washes out very fast but DEPENDING on the color of your current hair and what color shampoo you choose, will impact the results of the final look! ⭐️ 💛If you have blonde hair, it will be more true to color and the pastel colors are for you! 🤎If you have light brown or red hair, the medium to darker colors will work for you! 🖤Dark brown or black hair, it could potentially change your hair color but only slightly! ‼️IMPORTANT THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO USE LIGHTEN OR BLEACH HAIR AT HOME! PLEASE WAIT FOR A PROFESSIONAL TO BLEACH YOUR HAIR‼️ I have been using this product for over 5 years and personally have tried almost every color they sell! These are my two go to colors!!! The pastel pink is so fun to have and lasts ALOT longer than you might expect! The Lavender is great but sometimes appears to turn out blue or more of what I like to call blurple! I love to mix them together in my hair, or split my hair in half for a Harley Quinn effect! The options are endless!! BE CREATIVE, HAVE FUN & REMEMBER ITS JUST HAIR! 🤍 So if you are currently at home on quarantine, this is such a fun way to spice up your hair without hurting it in any way! If you have any questions on what color to buy, comment below and I would love to help you choose the best for your hair color! ❤️❤️ #cheriecreator #hairstyist #colorfulhair #unicorn
an amazing line for dull skin + pigmentation
Georgette Klinger and Cherie gifted these products to me so I could review them honestly! I have been using them for ten days now, and I have thoughts to share! I supplemented this routine with a moisturizer, spf, and eye cream, as well as hydrating masks every three days. Pre-Information — I’ve used many vitamin c products in the past, and my skin likes the ingredient! I have combo skin, which is sensitive and acne prone. I also have rosacea, which makes my skin red, especially when using actives. Every product here has fragrance and all the products smell like an orchard (it’s strong!). If you are sensitive to fragrance, keep that in mind. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Cleansing Gel 6.7 oz I like this cleanser, and I don’t usually reach for gel cleansers because they tend to be fairly stripping. This one is gentle and doesn’t dehydrate my skin on impact; I use it as a second cleanse at night following an oil based cleanser. It doesn’t irritate my skin, but kind of soothes it instead — which is a lot to ask for from a cleanser. Not the best for daytime use for me, I find that in the mornings my skin is better off with water + toner. Three stars because it smells like dollar store hand soap and I cannot ignore it. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Toner I think it’s an okay toner! I don’t like the dispenser at all, because product comes out fast and it’s hard to control. The viscosity of the toner is pretty thin, but my skin feels smooth after application. It sinks in fast and isn’t sticky! I use this with a reusable cotton round and it preps my skin nicely for the rest of my routine. It’s not really a “special” product for me, and I’m the kind of person who wants skincare routines to be ritualistic and also make me feel good on the inside, so I’ll have to pass on repurchasing. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Complex This might be one of my favorite vitamin c serums! It’s a little tacky, but sinks in faster than some serums I’ve used, and once you apply a moisturizer, the tackiness disappears. It’s pretty gentle and I didn’t experience any discomfort, tingling, or excess redness after application. I really like the packaging on this, and it’s an easy product to slip into your routine. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Mask This is my favorite product out of the four! I LOVE the packaging — pump top for a mask? Revolutionary. The pump makes getting product so easy, and you can control it easily. The texture of this mask is like a thick smoothie, and it smells good, too. I noticed my skin becoming brighter when I use this for a midday pick-me-up. I can guarantee that I’ll run out of this one first. Overall, my skin looks GOOD. I can’t tell if it’s just because of my cycle, or if these products did wonders for me (ten days is a short time to tell I think). I did notice some dehydration towards the five day mark, but overall my skin looks better!
