Why Active Ingredients Are Your Youth's Best FriendActive ingredients have become synonymous with anti-aging, and it's for good reason. What makes an ingredient active is, well, that they actively work with your skin to improve it. Instead of simply adding moisture or hydration, active ingredients can do things like help regenerate new skin cells, promote collagen production, and exfoliate old skin—all of the things that help maintain a youthful glow. Since we get better with age through wisdom and experience, it's only right that our skin get better, too! Read on to learn more about the active ingredients that help slow down aging.*All products featured below are sourced from the posts of Cherie's users. Retinol - Time Machine in a bottleRetinol, also known as vitamin A, is definitely one of the most effective ingredients of reversing the signs of aging for your skin. Based on the source of Harvard Health Publishing, "Retinoids reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. They also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color. Additional benefits include fading age spots and softening rough patches of skin". However, retinol is prone to cause dryness and accelerates skin's sensitivity to light. Thus, moisturizer and sunscreen are very (read: VERY!!) necessary while you are using retinol as treatment.*Other Products Contain This Ingredient

2. Bakuchiol - Retinol (But Milder!) With a similar gene expression as retinol derived from the babchi plant seeds, bakuchiol is considered to be a 100% natural alternative for this popular ingredient. Considering bakuchiol doesn't have any harsh side effects such as retinol does, this tends to be a gentler and safer option for those with sensitive skin. According to Dr. Debra Jaliman, a certified dermatologist based in NY, bakuchiol could somehow be regarded as a multi-functional ingredient when fighting against aging problems, as it “helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles, helps with pigmentation, elasticity, and firmness. It has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Also, prolonged use has shown to decrease roughness and dryness.” *Other Products Contain This Ingredient

3. Lactic Acid  - Gentle but EffectiveComparing with other ingredients belonging to AHAs, lactic acid is more gentle to use for people who have sensitive skin but still want to get surface skin cells exfoliated. According to Emma Hobson, Education Manager for Dermalogica and the International Dermal Institute, lactic acid can help us get younger, plumper skin cells. More importantly, it can increase the ceramides in the skin's protective barrier and water retention, which is also different from AHAs and BHAs.*Other Products Contain This Ingredient

4. Polypeptides - Plump your Skin UpMade up by amino acid, polypeptides are the foundation of proteins - fundamental building blocks of our skin. As we age, we lack peptides which leads to loss of firmness, appearance of wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. Nourishing our skin with supplemental polypeptides help us address those pesky signs of aging so that our skin may bounce back as it once did.*Other Products Contain This Ingredient

5. Vitamin C - For a youthful glow Along with retinol, it is universally acknowledged that Vitamin C is one of the most powerful "antioxidants" on the market since it protects our cells from damage and slows down the path of aging. Like the ingredients listed above, vitamin C is also a very good multi-tasker: it shows great advantages in fighting harmful free radicals (the bad guys) and regenerating the skin.*Other Products Contain This Ingredient

6. Ferulic Acid -  The teammate helps double-killFerulic acid normally exists in the seeds of fruits or vegetables, such as rice, eggplants, citrus, etc. While vitamin C alone is likely to degrade in a short time (especially with sun exposure), it can be greatly stabilized with the help of the ferulic acid. In fact, ferulic acid can boost the efficacy of most the antioxidants. Besides being the good teammate, ferulic acid is also able to fight the free-radical damage which leads to aging.   *Other Products Contain This Ingredient

7. Pro-xylane - Born from the legendaryOriginally developed and created by L’Oréal, Pro-xylane is the star formula of anti-aging. According to the official claims,"it is a sugar-protein hybrid made from xylose, a sugar found abundantly in beech trees and known to stimulate the production of glycoaminoglycans (GAGs), molecules responsible for defending the skin against water loss." With the help of Pro-xylane, our skin cells can be fundamentally healthier and stronger.*Other Products Contain This Ingredient

8. Q10 - Natural protectionQ10 is a naturally produced body enzyme. And it is the substance required to keep our organ and the chemical reactions in our body being in order. According to Kayo Body Care’s co-founder, Christine Bullock, with the strong effect of energizing cell activity, Q10 can ‘help your cells rid themselves of toxins’. Once the creation of Q10 is slow down in our body, the aging signs of our skin can be improved by using Q10 skincare products.*Other Products Contain This Ingredient

5 Reasons Why I Love TO’s Niacinamide Serum
5 Reasons Why I Love TO’s Niacinamide Serum
I first heard about The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum when I was searching for brightening serums last year. While my combination skin rarely ever breaks out, I do have some dark marks left over from the occasional pimples that I would like to disappear, or at least, improve in appearance. So I ordered TO’s Niacinamide Serum, crossing my fingers and hoping that it’s actually effective. It’s been almost a whole year later and I’m already on my third bottle of this serum. I have to say, I love it more and more as time goes by! Here are the 5 reasons why. 1. It lightens up my dark spots. It’s not a very dramatic change, mind you, but it does lighten my dark spots quite noticeably. I guess I’ll have to use a few more bottles of this serum if I want to completely lighten them. 2. It smoothens my skin’s texture. I can't believe just how nice it is to glide your fingers over your skin and not feel any bumps! 3. It provides much-needed moisture. My skin never feels dry when I have this serum on. I think it’s successful in locking in the moisture from my essence, too. 4. It doesn’t make my skin oily. Even though it moisturizes my skin, it doesn’t make my face look oily or greasy. This is very important to me because I really like keeping my face matte. 5. It makes me look fresh in the morning. Who doesn’t like seeing that healthy glow on their face when they wake up in the morning? Definitely not me! Can you guess what my overall rating is? 💋💋💋💋💋 5 out of 5 kisses! I really enjoy using this product and I think I’ll keep using it for the future, at least until I find a worthy replacement. Hopefully not, though! If you have some dark spots and you’re having a hard time reducing their appearance, you may want to try out The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum! You can get it for only $5.90 on the Cherie website! The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Have you tried this product before? Loved it, hated it? Let me know in the comments!

Erin has had this NINE years in the making. NINE. YEARS. She always pours a ton of love into her products, but this is the icing on the cake! (Or lashes...see what I did there? Lolol) It’s even housed in a sustainable, recyclable glass tube! 👏😍 ⠀ So why “matcha” mascara you ask? Specifically, Erin partnered with Encha Organic Matcha...but what you may not know is that multiple studies have shown it can strengthen hair! YES TO STRONG, THICK LASHES. 💪 ⠀ Use my code HULLOSAM for 10% off and go get you some of this AMAZING mascara !ERIN'S FACES - Matcha Mascara
My Acne Journey (Long Story)
My Acne Journey (Long Story)
Hi there! My name is Chelle, and like I’m sure many of you have dealt with, I have been in a battle with acne since I was a teenager. It’s been the bane of my existence and a constant thwart to my self-confidence. About 4 years ago, I started using Curology - Curology formula which, at first, worked absolute wonders! They prescribed to me a formula with azelaic acid, and for about 3 years, I felt like I had conquered and controlled my acne issues. Of course, I still had the scars and enlarged pores, but no new breakouts or cysts. I was incredibly satisfied and for once in my life, I had gained some the self-confidence that I never had growing up. I even enjoyed not having to wear as much makeup. However, a couple months before my wedding last year, I started noticing some acne beginning to consistently form in my chin area. I at first attributed to pre-wedding stress (which honestly didn’t make much sense because I actually didn’t do all my wedding planning). But even after the wedding, the breakouts continued to worsen. I reached out to Curology and they switched my prescription to the more aggressive tretinoin. It helped to control it somewhat, but unlike before, new breakouts would surface every week. So with that being said, I’m going back to square one with my acne journey. I’ll using Cherie as a journal to document my successes and failures as I try to, again, get the zits under control. I happily welcome recommendations and feedback! I am by no means a skin or beauty expert, but my hope is that my journey will somewhat encourage another individual that they’re not alone in this battle! Here are the list of products that I am currently using. I’ll do reviews of them as I go! Georgette Klinger and Cherie gifted these products to me so I could review them honestly! I have been using them for ten days now, and I have thoughts to share! I supplemented this routine with a moisturizer, spf, and eye cream, as well as hydrating masks every three days. Pre-Information — I’ve used many vitamin c products in the past, and my skin likes the ingredient! I have combo skin, which is sensitive and acne prone. I also have rosacea, which makes my skin red, especially when using actives. Every product here has fragrance and all the products smell like an orchard (it’s strong!). If you are sensitive to fragrance, keep that in mind. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Cleansing Gel 6.7 oz I like this cleanser, and I don’t usually reach for gel cleansers because they tend to be fairly stripping. This one is gentle and doesn’t dehydrate my skin on impact; I use it as a second cleanse at night following an oil based cleanser. It doesn’t irritate my skin, but kind of soothes it instead — which is a lot to ask for from a cleanser. Not the best for daytime use for me, I find that in the mornings my skin is better off with water + toner. Three stars because it smells like dollar store hand soap and I cannot ignore it. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Toner I think it’s an okay toner! I don’t like the dispenser at all, because product comes out fast and it’s hard to control. The viscosity of the toner is pretty thin, but my skin feels smooth after application. It sinks in fast and isn’t sticky! I use this with a reusable cotton round and it preps my skin nicely for the rest of my routine. It’s not really a “special” product for me, and I’m the kind of person who wants skincare routines to be ritualistic and also make me feel good on the inside, so I’ll have to pass on repurchasing. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Complex This might be one of my favorite vitamin c serums! It’s a little tacky, but sinks in faster than some serums I’ve used, and once you apply a moisturizer, the tackiness disappears. It’s pretty gentle and I didn’t experience any discomfort, tingling, or excess redness after application. I really like the packaging on this, and it’s an easy product to slip into your routine. GEORGETTE KLINGER - Vitamin C Mask This is my favorite product out of the four! I LOVE the packaging — pump top for a mask? Revolutionary. The pump makes getting product so easy, and you can control it easily. The texture of this mask is like a thick smoothie, and it smells good, too. I noticed my skin becoming brighter when I use this for a midday pick-me-up. I can guarantee that I’ll run out of this one first. Overall, my skin looks GOOD. I can’t tell if it’s just because of my cycle, or if these products did wonders for me (ten days is a short time to tell I think). I did notice some dehydration towards the five day mark, but overall my skin looks better!
Donts of Exfoliation
Donts of Exfoliation
Absolutely do not over-exfoliate! Over-exfoliation can disrupt the skin barrier function by just simply breaking down too many skin cells and disrupting the moisture content on the epidermis. Often times, especially people with oily skin and acne prone believe exfoliating is going to answer all their acne problems, and go on scrubbing 3+ times a week or using an exfoliating mask too often. This is actually counter intuitive for acne as if can actually make you break out more, and it can create sensitivities you dont need. How do you know you’re over exfoliating? If your skin lets you know. Yes, very confusing, but the reality is some people can actually tolerate more acids and scrubs than others, and the best way to figure out how much your skin can take is to incorporate little by little, one product at a time. If your skin is going red for prolonged periods of time, or tingling, even burning, for long or for the entire duration of having the product on (ie. With a mask) you’re probably overdoing it. Another way to prevent over exfoliation is just knowing when to stop. If your skin is happy and glowy and not breaking out, you may not need that new glycolic acid mask, adding an exfoliating mask to your regimen may just tip the scales into skin barrier disruption and dehydration! Be careful with exfoliation!
