My Family’s Favorite Beauty Products (oh no..)
Hey ya’ll! Today we’re talking about my family’s favorite beauty products! My grandma is super into high end beauty, but both my parents describe themselves as “creatures of habit” and aren’t that into it. However, they all have products they love. The way this will work is they’ll share their favorite products and why they like them, then I’ll give my opinions on them based on their ingredients. Mom: LAYRITE - Natural Matte Cream in Medium Hold: My Mom says it’s able to tame her frizzy hair, while also not requiring her to use a lot of it. My comment: I talked about this product in my Best of Haircare 2020 post on Cherie. This pomade is strongly targeted at men, as a great pomade for mess free styles. The ingredients don’t show much, it’s pretty standard. It has vanilla fragrance oils, which is okay for a hair product, and it has brazilian wax. OLAY - Complete UV365 Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 : My Mom says that her Mom used to use this when she was a kid, and my Mom started stealing it. She fell in love with it, and likes that it absorbs quickly while not being greasy, and that the smell reminds her of her Mom. This is ironic because I always steal this from my Mom. Who knows when the chain will stop? My comment: This one I’ve also talked about on Cherie in my Best of Skincare 2020 list. This is a really basic nourishing moisturizer, that’s great for beginners. It’s alchohol and frangrance free, and quite affordable. #Bobbi Brown - Lip Color[products]#[FourStars] : My Mom says she discovered this while shopping in early February 2020. She says it’s super soft, lasts a pretty long time, and that it’s more of a brown color than a true nude. My comment: This lipstick is imfamous for not layering well, but is great from an ingredient stand point. #Aveda - Smoothing Fluid Lotion[products]#[FiveStars] : My Mom says she’s been using this for about 15 years. It also helps with frizz, and brings her hair a lot of shine. My comment: The best way to describe this product is like a serum for your hair. It’s a bit oily on your fingers, and smells like pumpkin pie. It has fragrance, hence the smell, but again that’s okay in terms of haircare. It has a fusion of oils, which seem to be causing the oily texture, as well as the shine. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend this to people with oily hair. Other than that, I wish I could recommend it, but apparently Avenda discontinued this product :(. Dad: head & shoulders - Classic Clean Anti-Dandruff 2 in 1 Paraben Free Shampoo and Conditioner : My Dad says that he normally has bad dandruff, but this shampoo works to get rid of it. I think we can trust him on that, as he’s been using it for about 40 years. My comment: This product uses pyrithione zinc as it’s main dandruff fighting ingredient. Zinc can help prevent hair loss, clean your hair folicules, and reduce build up on your scalp. I wouldn’t reccomend this product because it contains large doses of both sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These are known skin irritants, which can cause severe reaction to those with sensitive skin. #Paco Rabbane - cologne[products]#[ThreeStars] : My Dad says he tried it because his uncle used it, and he’s been wearing it for 25 years now. My comment: you can’t say anything about a cologne, I mean it’s all about the fragrance. #Irish Spring - Bar Soap[products]#[ThreeStars] : My Dad says he likes the smell. My comment: my Dad is so old he hasn’t graduated to liquid soap yet. Some side notes, people on amazon say it’s a great pest and deer repellent, as well as a great deodent. Who knew bar soap had a bunch of different uses? Grandma: OBAGI - Nu-Derm Toner : My Grandma says that she likes how calming this toner is. My comment: I overall don’t like this product. First, witch hazel is the third ingredient in this toner. Witch hazel can be irritating and sesitizing, and it also needs alcohol in it to be stable. Alcohol is also irritating. This product also has fragrance, and when I smelled it I thought on cinnamon. OBAGI - Nu-Derm Foaming Gel : My Grandma says she likes to use this and the toner together. My comment: This product is really bad. First, it contains a large amount of Sodium Laureth Sulfate, which I already talked about. It also contains unnecessary extracts, fragrance, and 5 TYPES OF PARABENS!!!! Parabens are believed to mimic the hormone oestrogen. “Too much oestrogen can trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumors, which is why parabens have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.” According to Elle magazine and the Environmental Working Group. SKINCEUTICALS - A.G.E. Eye Complex for Dark Circles : My Grandma likes that this cream help diminish the appearance of her wrinkles. My comment: This product is okay. The ingredient list is fine, my only concern would be that it contains a pretty big amount of paraffins, which are known to clog pores. #skinmedica - the advanced serum[products]#[OneStar] : My Grandma says she LOVES this serum! She says it contains stem cell factors, and is really expensive but unbelievable. My comment: This product is really overpriced. It’s $295.00 for a 1 oz. bottle, and NOTHING on the ingredients list justifies the price. It claims to have anti aging complex’s, but if so, I can’t find them on the ingredients list. All I see is a list of cheap extracts, that are a form of fragrance even though they claim the product is fragrance free. Sorry Grandma, The Ordinary will give you better serums for $5. Save that $290 for something more important! Cetaphil - Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion : My Grandma says this is a good, simple moisturizer thats well priced. My comment: This is a good product! It has glycerin which is hydrating, it’s not overpriced, and it’s fragrance free! That was a roller coaster, but that’s it for today! Make sure to cheer this post to spread the awareness that no matter how long you’ve been using a product it might not be good. What I HATE putting in my hair!
Gius, there are so many terrible products and home recipes that can go wrong. Here is a list of all my no-no's, and coming soon I'll write about what hair products I actually use. Here we go! JOHN FRIEDA - Violet Crush for Blondes Purple Shampoo has super harmful chemicals in it like parabens and PEGs. It also had no effect on my hair and didn't help it from going a little bronze after I bleached it. Dove - Dove Derma Care Scalp Invigorating Mint Anti Dandruff 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner This does NOTHING to your hair! It had bad chemicals like EDTA and PEGs. Didn't clear up my dandruff and the texture was really weird. head & shoulders - Classic Clean Anti-Dandruff 2 in 1 Paraben Free Shampoo and Conditioner Ok so at least this one is paraben free. But I couldn't give it any more than one star because it not only does nothing for dandruff, it makes it worse!!!! Pls pls pls avoid head and shoulders they are such trash brand. My scalp screamed help after using this. Here are some diy hair mask ingredients that I also avoid putting in my hair: Mashed up bananas are the worst. Unless you mix them in a food processor, it is hell getting the little clumps out of your hair. Cinnamon is said to have hair growth properties, but after my really bad haircut I used cinnamon before my shampoo at almost every wash. Cinnamon is also hard to get out of your hair, and it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for your hair. It's just a waste of time and doesn't even make your hair smell good in the end. Oil on th scalp can screw with you big time. I usually have an oilier scalp, so I only put oils on my roots. If the oil is mixed with other ingredients, then it's ok, but if you're putting just coconut oil on your hair, you'll have hard time washing it out of your scalp. Anyways, I'll be posting in another post the hair products I actually use, and I posted before a hair mask that works wonders.

Battle Of The Scalp Soothers| #CheriePartner
I’ve been using the head & shoulders - Instant Soothe Scalp Elixir for a while and i LOVE that product but when i went to my local CVS I realized that they were sold out of that product ☹️. I was really bummed out but I went on IG and i was just scrolling and i seen an AD for Gabrielle Union’s new hair are like called Flawless by Gabrielle Union & I was intrigued. The prices weren’t bad and they were on Amazon Prime so i was able to get them next day. FLAWLESS - Scalp Soothing Tonic Hair Treatment s more of a direct contact to the scalp cause it’s sort of like a gelly substance. Though it has peppermint oil it doesn’t have that tingly feeling like the head & shoulders - Instant Soothe Scalp Elixir es whenever you spray it on. So far not gonna lie I’ve been liking the Gabrielle Union product but my only con with the product is that it leaves the scalp feeling a lil wet for a lil longer than the spray does, not gonna lie it kinda bothered my only because i would run my fingers through like scalp and my finger tips would be wet. Ion like det 🥴 So far to be honest ( once again) i will give this FLAWLESS - Scalp Soothing Tonic Hair Treatment . I give it 3/5 because though the product is good it does leave that wet feeling that’s kinda annoying and i know people like quick drying results. They like things. The head & shoulders - Instant Soothe Scalp Elixir is still a banger and i hope that local CVS restocks soon so i can reup! Tell me if you’ve tried these products and how you feel about scalp soothers & tonics like this!

Favorite Braided Knotless Styles 👩🏽‍🦱
Having braids is fun but doing different styles with them even makes them more fun to have! I like to try new styles with my braids once they are a week old. I do want to get into more eccentric styles and experiment a lil bit but these 4 styles will do ( for now lol) When i’m doing my styles I like to oil my scalp and refresh it a lil with my sulfur 8 - Medicated Anti-Dandruff Hair and Scalp Conditioner Original Formula & head & shoulders - Instant Soothe Scalp Elixir These styles are quick and fun and spice up an already fun and easy hairstyle!

🌿 my fav anti-dandruff shampoo
I was suffering from a lot of dandruff on the left side of my head. I always parted most of my hair in that direction, so I think that might have caused an oil buildup. 🐝 Other common causes of dandruff are: Not cleansing enough Dry skin Malassezia fungus (feeds on scalp oils) Allergic reaction Or eczema I tried two products that didn’t do much for me~ Selsun blue - Moisturizing Dandruff Shampoofelt fresh, but didn’t make a difference. Key ingredient is 1% Selenium sulfide, which relieves itching and prevents fungus. head & shoulders - Classic Clean Daily-Use Anti-Dandruff ShampooKey ingredient is 1% Pyrithione Zinc, which fights fungus and bacteria. Considered less intense than selenium sulfide, so for more mild cases. But both these shampoos have sulfates, which can dry our your hair with overuse. Finally, I tried the L'ORÉAL - EverFresh Antidandruff Sulfate Free Shampoo on a whim one day when I was in a rush. It’s about $6 depending on your store, and comes with 8.5 fl oz. But I was happily surprised at how this stopped my dandruff! 🍃 PRODUCT REVIEW & INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN 🍃 This one’s active ingredient is 1% Pyrithione Zinc, like Head & Shoulders. But unlike it, it doesn’t have sulfates. I read the ingredients and saw “sodium lauryl sulfoacetate” (SLSA), which just sounded like a spin off of sulfate. But I did some research. Both that ingredient and traditional sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) create bubbles. But SLS is artificial, and SLSA is derived from 🥥 and palm oils. According to a Naturally Curly article, SLSA molecules are too big to penetrate skin, making them less irritating than SLS. Basically, it’s a gentler cleanser. Since sulfates can over dry your hair (encouraging more oil production), I think this product struck the right balance: pairing an anti-dandruff ingredient with a less drying cleanser. It also has algae 🌊 and melia azadirachta leaf (Indian lilac) extract. The algae reduces inflammation from bacteria. Meanwhile, lilac is anti-fungal. Plus... it smells and feels minty. A little amount will lather up a lot. It feels cooling on your scalp, so sometimes I let it sit in my hair for a few minutes in the shower. Washing just the roots of your hair is enough. And after washing and applying conditioner, I noticed my hair still had volume. So it did the clearing job without hurting my curls. I used to have ❄️ flakes when I scratched my head. Now, the most I need is a touch up cleanse every quarter. What are your remedies ? Do tea tree oils or certain conditioners work for you?

how to clear up your fungal acne
growing up i never really had acne. it wasn’t until maybe 8th grade till i noticed some texture on my forehead and it only got worse throughout my freshman year of high school. after trying every acne treatment ever invented (ok maybe not all of them) ive finally have found out a way to maintain my FA so that i dont look like 14 year old me anymore 😳 what is fungal acne? fungal acne ( malassezia folliculitis ) is when the healthy yeasts that live on your skin get too comfortable and start to grow. causing that raised itchy texture we all hate what causes fungal acne weather ( hot humid climate ) sweat stress certain ingredients (lipids, polysorbates, esters, oils, and fermented ingredients) what to avoid ok so as said in the previous section, certain ingredients can promote the growth of malassezia. and it just so happens that a HUGE percentage of skincare on the market will be formulated with these types of ingredients. i know very sucky so here are some ingredients to avoid! -absolutely NO oils. the only oils that are fungal acne safe are squalane oil, mineral oil, MCT oil. -all polysorbates including 20, 40, 60, 80 -fermented ingredients ESPECIALLY galacmyces -fatty acids ( stearic, linoleic, myristic, oleic) just to name a few -esters ( glyceryl stearate is the most common one) treatment and ingredients that help -Curology - Curology formula ( clindamycin, niacinamide, azelaic acid, zinc pyrithione) - green tea extracts -honey/ propolis extract -slicylic acid (bha) -sulfur ( De La Cruz - Sulfur Ointment, Acne Medication, Maximum Strength) - tea tree oil - urea - sun exposure 😀🌤 - then we have the inti dandruff shampoo like Nizoral - Anti Dandruff Shampoo and head & shoulders - Classic Clean Daily-Use Anti-Dandruff Shampoo but in my opinion i find them to be unaffected but idk try it for yourself some of my favorite products for fa -CeraVe - Salicylic Acid Facial Cleanser -Curology - Curology formula( azelaic acid, clindamycin, zinc pyrithione) -NATURIUM - Niacinamide Serum 12% Plus Zinc 2% -Glossier. - Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum -FIRST AID BEAUTY - Hello FAB Coconut Water Cream -FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer for more information about fungal acne go to www.simpleskincarescience.com and go read “The Fungal Acne Treatment Bible (2020): Cure Malassezia With Science!” to check if your skincare products are fa safe go to - folliculitisscout.com -sezia.co -skincarisma.com ( that one isn’t as reliable but it still pretty good) like and share! xo melanie
