Fungal acne routine & getting rid of it forever!
I’ve struggled with malassezia Folliculitis/fungal acne for 6 months. My skin’s improved but you do need patience! Now I breakout occasionally, have redness and pigmentation.
Disclaimer: Everyone’s different & this is what I’ve learnt. Leave suggestions below!
Treatments:
I ruined my gut health and ended getting constant yeast infections which links to malassezia as both are overgrowths of fungus/yeast! I recommend an anti-candida diet. Celery juice, apple cider vinegar in water, probiotics and supplements to boost my immune system all helped.
I used Folliculitis scout to search for malassezia-safe products. I’ve used other websites and tbh some of them aren’t accurate or their recommended products broke me out.
Every oil (except squalane & MCT), fatty acids and lipids is used by malassezia to grow! Once you eliminate these (which is hard), you can use glycerin or amino acids in your skincare routine and makeup bc they need oil, lipids or fatty acids for malassezia to grow off them.
Skin barrier health and moisture is important. Don’t use too many treatments bc your skin will just get sensitive, dry and produce more oils. Also the Nizoral shampoo will ruin your skin barrier even if it kills malassezia off. There are other ways to treat it!
Skincare routine:
Morning: Benton - Deep Green Tea Toner green tea extract inhibits and combats malassezia. It’s a soothing and moisturising toner/essence. It’s antibacterial properties can target other types of acne too.
skinstitut - Vitamin C 100% mix w/moisturiser for pigmentation/scarring
Like I'm Five - All Day Soothing Gel Lotion I LOVE THIS. It has xylitol that combats malassezia, glycerin and hyaluronic acid as humectants and panthenol for healing. It’s on iherb for 12 AUD too! A steal!
The Ordinary - 100% Plant-Derived Squalane squalane has helped my skin go from oily to normal, hence stopping your skin from over producing sebum where malassezia grows.
elta md SKINCARE - UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 have had a hard time finding a good sunscreen this is one of the few malassezia safe sunscreens. Helps with hyper pigmentation.
Nighttime:
BIODERMA - Sensibio H2O Soothing Micellar Cleansing Water have tried others and always go back to this. Tried MCT oil, it’s malassezia-safe but oil cleansing is time consuming for me personally.
ETUDE - Soon Jung, pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser I’ve tried vanicream but this massively changed my skin.
facetheory - PoreBright Serum N10 only use on problem areas 2x a week. Salicylic & azelaic combats malassezia.
Or AZCLEAR - Medicated Lotion
Benton - Deep Green Tea Toner
Like I'm Five - All Day Soothing Gel Lotion The Ordinary - 100% Plant-Derived Squalane

NIGHT TIME SKINCARE ROUTINE
This is my current pm skincare routine! First, I use the facetheory - Clarifying Cleanser C2 which really gives my skin a thorough cleanse without stripping it. My skin feels so soft after using it! Next, I’ll go in with The Ordinary - Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% which is honestly so underrated! Everyone raves about the The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%(which is an amazing product that I use in the morning) when it comes to brightening up complexion and helping with blemishes, but Azelaic Acid is just as great of an ingredient if not better when it comes to clearing skin and dealing with hyperpigmentation. Highly recommend!!! Lastly, I’ll finish off the routine with the FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration and I love it for my dry skin!
Right now, my routine is really short and basic because my skin has been struggling from trying so many new products. So I’m giving it some time to detox.
Also keep in mind that my routine is always changing as I adjust it based on how my skin is feeling. For example, when my skin is breaking out, I’ll use the Neutrogena - Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Spot Gelto target those pimples. And when my skin is feeling a bit more dry, I’ll use THE inkey LIST - Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum. Or when I’m feeling fancy, I’ll use a sheet mask.
On that note, skincare is very personal for each person and it’s a trial and error process until you really find what works for your skin. I know that what works for me may not work for you, but I hope my recommendations are helpful and that you achieve your skin goals!☺️💖🌙

Azelaic Acid: You Need This In Your Routine
Azelaic acid is amazing. It occurs naturally on the skin and is produced by grains in labs, holding anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties rather unique to such a gentle, multifaceted antioxidant. It helps with skin texture, redness, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and even minimizes the look of active breakouts. All of the pictured products are free of fragrance, alcohol, and essential oils.
facetheory - PoreBright Serum N10 ($19 per 30mL) features star ingredients like 10% azelaic acid, 10% niacinamide, salicylic acid (<2%), aloe, and sodium hyaluronate to calm skin while addressing issues like congested pores, uneven tone, acne, oily skin... it’s a versatile serum that I enjoyed. The serum is light and moisturizing, with good spreadability. This is the gentlest of the three in my experience.
PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster ($36 per 30 mL) is a game-changer. I enjoyed FaceTheory N10, but something about PC’s formulation transformed my acne experience. 10% Azelaic acid, salicylic acid (<2%), licorice root extract, allantoin, and a variety of humectants + emollients come together in this light gel-cream to give significant texture-smoothing, tone-correcting, acne-preventing results. Whenever I apply this in the AM (which it is gentle enough to do), my blemishes are reduced remarkably by the evening. I also have seen such significant fading of my acne scars that I already got a back-up! Its cream formula allows for use as a spot treatment if you prefer that. This is my favourite of the three pictured.
The Ordinary - Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% ($7.90 per 30mL) is a simple formula, with 10% Azelaic acid and vitamin e as the star ingredients in a variety of silicones and emollients. I noticed significant hyperpigmentation reduction with this cream, but I cannot stand the silicone texture. It has a strange grit to it, no matter how much I shake up the bottle. I also think my skin dislikes heavy silicones, as I experienced increased breakouts when using this, despite the wonderful brightening and calming properties it has. Not sure I’d recommend this unless your skin handles silicone well. The matte finish would probably be enjoyed by oily skin types.
