My Bunny & Her Hair 🐰
We call her Bunny.
Her name is Heather Olivia.
She is almost 5 years old.
I was a mother long before she came along. A mother to 3 boys which, at the time of her birth, made me feel unqualified for the job of raising a girl. The youngest girl in my family at the time was 18 years old so I did not have much experience with girls since there were so many males in my family. Over time, this irrational feeling of not measuring up went away and I am now confident in my mothering of a young African American female.
There was only one issue I had a problem tackling - her hair! I didn’t know much about doing a girls hair and I couldn’t just take her to a barber like my boys. So, I started out by doing what I did to my hair when I started my natural hair care journey. I even used the same products and she still uses these products to this very day! I searched YouTube videos and learned so much from them. I practiced on her and now I think I’ve got it! Now, she loves when I do her hair and I’m more comfortable doing it.
Today I had to do some finger coils on her hair and she absolutely loved it. I even let her pick out her headband! Here is the list of products used during her normal regimen and today:
Mane‘n Tail - Deep Moisturizing Shampooand
SheaMoisture - Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Rinse-Out Conditionerwere used for washing her hair.
cantu - Shea Butter Leave in Conditioning Repair Cream and SheaMoisture - Coconut & Hibiscus, Kids Curling Butter Creamwere used on her hair as leave ins.
Hot Six Oil, SheaMoisture - 100% Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, ECOCO - Eco Style Olive Oil GelandMiss Jessie's - Pillow Soft Curlswere used to seal in moisture as well as for styling her amazingly curly 3C/4A hair.

CG Method-Friendly Curl Defining Gels for Summer
Summer is around the corner in the Southern Hemisphere. In Australia, the weather is already warming up and the sun is getting shinier by the day ☀️
With a humid climate on the way, you’ll want to protect your wavy, curly and coils hair with moisture. You’ll also need a curl defining gel that can withstand the conditions.
Here are some examples of affordable curl defining gels that are Curly Girl Method friendly for your upcoming summer adventures:
What is Curl Defining Gel?
This type of product is designed to tame and define curls by trapping moisture in the hair and protecting it from frizz. This is all whilst enhancing your natural curly texture.
Wavy Hair Textures:
AA curl defining gel might be too heavy for waves. Try lighter styling products like creams or mousses. Try kms - Curlup Control Creme or MATRIX - Curl Please Super Defrizzer .
Curly Hair Textures:
Those of you with more defined and tighter curls can probably handle a curl defining gel. A gel like aussie - Instant Freeze Hair with Jojoba Oil & Sea Kelp Gel is great for humidity. You can also try BIOSILK - Rock Hard Gelee for another affordable option.
Coily Hair Textures:
Our coily CGM friends always rave about the cantu - Shea Butter for Natural Hair Coconut Curling Cream and ECOCO - Eco Style Olive Oil Gel for an affordable and long-lasting hold.
Why are These Products Curly Girl Method Friendly?
The curly girl method approves brands and products that don’t include harmful, drying and dirtying ingredients. These include sulphates, silicones, mineral oils, parabens, alcohols etc.
You can use a site like www.isitcg.com to check your products ingredients!
Pro Tips for Using Curl Defining Gel:
🖤 Most hair types will benefit from additional moisture during the warmer months.
🖤 When you get out the shower after washing your hair, wring some water out, take a blob of leave in conditioner, and squeeze it into your hair. 🖤 Scrunch from the ends up to the root.
🖤 Follow this up with a blob of curl defining gel, mousse or cream. Scrunch it into your hair to lock in the moisture and encourage a curly texture.
🖤 Towels can be damaging to curly hair so scrunch with an old t-shirt to dry off the hair some more.

🎀“Baby Hairs”🎀 (3A curls)
So before I get into this topic I want to give credit to all of the amazing Black & Latina women creators on all social media platforms bc they truly hold all of the best beauty advice
So to get into this, I’m Latina & white. My dad is Hispanic and my mom is white. I wasn’t around my dad much growing up (or his family) so my mom was the one guiding me through my hair journey. If u know where I’m going with this.. it was kinda disastrous bc she gave me white girl hair advice and not mixed/textured hair girl advice. But luckily youtube exists.
Fast forward to today, I’m still learning about my hair and trying to maintain my hair the best I can. I recently started playing around with my baby hairs because honestly it is such a look. I definitely keep it pretty simple and reserved by just trying to slick back and decrease frizz but this has been such a game changer for me.
I’m able to achieve a more refined look using this gel in generally but also on my baby hairs. 10/10 if you have curly hair try this out.
Also I have a new found respect & appreciation for laying edges because it is so challenging 💆🏽♀️

🍍Sleek Buns & Ponytails 🍍
This is such a great product , super affordable, and really could be used on all hair types. I pretty use it anytime I need to make my casual ponytails or buns a little more sleek and clean. My little frizzies can make my updos sloppy and this helps hold my hair in place, especially around my face. I wish I would have been using this years ago 🥰

Low Porosity Hair: No Gel vs Gel
What my Low Porosity hair (i think it is, at least) looks with no product right after a wash vs. with eco style gel right after a wash. Both are still wet.

What hair type am I?
I first thought I was 3C, but then I realized my hair had heat damage and resultantly, a looser curl. Then I grew out the damage and thought ok it’s 4A, but honestly I just don’t know. Any naturalistas out there want to chime in? When my hair dries it just gets frizzy and shrunken.
This photo is right after a hair wash (still wet), styled with Eco Style gel.
I hate to say it but no matter how many gels I try, Eco Style is the only one that takes away my frizz without feeling heavy. I have since embraced the frizz and hardly use gel at all in my daily routine, but am dying to try flaxseed gel like the one Naptural85 makes for herself.

The Most Moisturizing Gel You’ll Ever Use-CHEAP!
I have wavy Type 2 hair and I cannot say enough good things about this product! I got this massive container for less than $7 and it holds my waves beautifully! No crunchy hair, just soft moisturized waves! This product is no secret to those with natural hair but I feel like those with softer curls or wavy hair don’t realize that these products are formulated for all hair types, are alcohol free, and do not dry out your hair or scalp! I highly recommend it even for those with straight hair who want a slicked back look occasionally, this stuff is great!

My first time doing finger coils!
I tried finger coils for the first time! I’ve been wanting to try them for a while! Some came out really good and tight and the others were a little loose at the roots. So when I do them next time I’ll have to put a clip at the roots, blow dry them and see the results. But not bad for my first time. I listed the products I used and I also used hair foaming moose. I used a little bit of each product, I didn’t want to say my hair down.
