🌴 picking the right gel for curly hair
I have low-porosity, medium textured, 2C-3A curls. At first, I tried the Herbal Essences - Totally Twisted Curl-Boosting Mousse with Berry Essences mousse to style my hair. It made my hair shiny, bouncy, and feel light. But the downside to mousse is it’s harder to define your curl shape with it. Enter gel. I tried the Ouidad - Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel , a popular product from Curly Hair reddit, and followed these directions to try it: condition your hair in the shower, then rinse. when you’re out, use “prayer hands” to run a golf-ball sized amount through your hair. let it dry COMPLETELY, then scrunch out the gel cast on your hair. You’re left with bouncy, shapely, and voluminous curls like shown above! And something I noticed later is that I got ringlets 🍥 in some hair layers. It’s been a while since I got my ringlets back man 😭 I tried the travel size of this product, and I’m loving it so far. The scent is gentle and fresh, the texture is runny (not heavy), and the hair cast it forms is easy to soften. The only downside is that it’s $26 for 8.5 oz. And they recommend using a golfball sized amount, which is a lot... I used maybe 2 clementine slices amount and that almooost got my whole head, but not quite. Some people recommend the LA LOOKS - Extreme Sport Styling Gel, which is $3.79 for 20.0 oz. But note that it has Keratin & Soy protein. Lowpo hair tends to already have a lot of keratin, so adding more can make it brittle. Which brings me to some general tips for picking a gel: 🌺For Lowpo hair, avoid high protein ones. The Ouidad one has some protein, too, but it’s lower on the ingredients list. 🌺Avoid gels with alcohol, sulfates, parabens or silicones. The first 3 ingredients can dry out your hair, causing them to get more frizzy. Meanwhile, silicones are known to build up over time and weigh down hair. 🌺 If you have fine hair, be selective about the oils in it. Jojoba oil is one of the best to nourish fine hair without weighing it down. Medium hair can get a protein boost from coconut oil. Coarse hair can benefit from vitamin rich avocado oil. 🌺 Get travel sizes and go for trial and error. Hair isn’t an exact science. And sometimes, we have one part of our hair that’s more heat damaged or thin than the other. These tips are a guide to help you start, but you might find something different works for you, and that’s okay. Still, if you have my hair type and want to try a gel, I recommend this one! I’ve also heard good things about the Kinky-Curly - Original Curling Custard, Natural Styling Geland theaussie - Instant Freeze Hair with Jojoba Oil & Sea Kelp Gel. So I’ll probably give those a shot next ✨
my favorite leave in conditioner
To this day, my favorite leave in conditioner is SheaMoisture - Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Rinse-Out Conditionere. I’ve been experimenting with different brands over the past few weeks and was striking out, so it was time to just go back to what I know. 🌻 For styling, my cocktail right now that works best for my hair is leave-in conditioner, black castor oil or olive oil and gel. Right now my favorite is the Ouidad - Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel in the red bottle 👌🏽

A lot of product for a LOW price 🤑
OKAY curly girls of cherie. Let me put you on to Mielle if you haven’t heard of them already. Disclaimer: I have not tried everything YET. But wanted to get this in front of you so we can compare notes. ➿➿I have 3a/b curlzzzzz ➿➿ If you are really looking for some deep moisture this Hawaiian Ginger line is for YOU. The shampoo is a bit difficult to pump out, and you need to use kind of a lot of it to get some good suds (if you’re into that) 🧼 but overall it’s pretty nice. I thought it would be more fragrant but it’s not! It’s kind of like a calming ginger tea 🫖 MIELLE - Moisture RX Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing & Anti-Breakage Shampoo The conditioner is definitely THICC. Had to take a few pumps then comb it through sections of my hair in the shower. Left it in and after a few mins I rinsed it out..it felt pretty smooth. MIELLE - Moisture RX Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing & Anti-Breakage Conditioner Okay here is where it gets a little tricky for me. I have very fine hair. And it needs moisture but if I go overboard it just doesn’t sit right when I dry it. So when using the leave in conditioner, I think I overdid it and left a lil too much in. I normally use the Ouidad - Advanced Climate Control Featherlight Styling Cream after I wash/condition and it is perfect when I diffuse afterwards bc it’s so light. But mistakes were made on my part bc it did not look cute when I diffused it dry. MIELLE - Moisture RX Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner I only used a bit of the MIELLE - Moisture RX Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing Styling Gel after the leave in and before diffusing and it was OK but I think I had too much leave in for it to do anything cute for me. Overall, I think it is worth another shot! There is seriously a TON of product here for a really great affordable price. I would say it’s only a bit smaller than Pattern Beauty but I would take Mielle over Pattern any day for the fragrance alone (Sorry Auntie Tracee) — I really hate strong fragrance in my hair products!! I def want to try the overnight conditioner and wash in the AM then use my regular products to style to see if I can still maintain the hydration from the night before, without it weighing my curls down when they’re dry. We’ll see how it goes!!!
New Haul For All My New Friends!!
Looks like I’ve been getting some new followers here on ze cherie. Hello and welcome!! Thought I’d share this haul that’s been sittin in my drafts for a minute. Just got allllllll these goodies from PATTERN beauty for my 3a curly tresses. Fun Fact: Tracee Ellis Ross is the founder, and was my valentine once (I’m not lying. At all.) She launched styling products a little bit ago and I’ve been super excited to try these. I’ve been pretty consistently on my natural hair journey for a few years now and I’m always down to try new products! PATTERN - Styling Cream I personally think this cream can totally work for some folks. I have really fine hair so it can get weighed down pretty easily. This cream is thicc unlike most other curl creams (way thicker than my usualOuidad - Advanced Climate Control Featherlight Styling Cream ) so a little can go a long way — for me, bc there is A LOT in this tub. One thing I can truthfully say with this brand is they really paid attention to the amount of product curls need and the value is THERE for the size and quality. PATTERN - Hydrating Mist I’ve tried many hydrating mists. I don’t give this one top marks though bc I just don’t like the smell. It’s too floral for me. It also hydrates I guess?? But idk how I feel about it — I haven’t found the perfect hydrating mist that helps tame the mane on my extra frizzy days. PATTERN - Hair Pick if there is one thing I CAN say about the styling tools is that auntie Tracee came thru with the qualiTEA! This pick is strong and comes with a velvety sleeve. You can tell they did the most with tools on this line bc the PATTERN - Edge Tool is also 💯 and pairs nicely with the PATTERN - Edge Control or even the OUAI - Matte Pomade PATTERN - Mist Spray Bottle this is also nice but the biggest difference is it can hold a lot more water. Maybe like 20% more than you can get from the ones on Amazon. THE RUNDOWN Value ✅ Quality ✅ Efficacy ✔️➖(it works fine it’s just not my favorite) Would I repurchase? Not sure. But there is so much product I honestly don’t know when I’ll even have to buy more 😂
Skincare in the hospital: what I brought!
Being the type to never skip my skincare routine, I knew I wouldn’t be able to go without while in the hospital after giving birth! That being said, I knew I’d need to pair it down to the bare essentials, and bring practical items. Due to complications I had a cesarean, and my daughter came a lot earlier than expected (she’s 8mos and super pudgy currently). I hadn’t quite pictured it being the way it was, but it was honestly a beautiful experience (minus the major surgery). So with that, I was in the hospital for about 4 days after delivering. Naturally, I wanted to care for my skin in the small ways I could, since I couldn’t really walk to the bathroom to wash my face (and I kinda didn’t want to because it hurt too much tbh), so how’d I do it? Here’s how, and here’s what I brought. I packed my favorite lip balm for starters, hospital air is insanely drying and it really does a number on your skin and lips. DHC - DHC Lip Cream is my go-to, and kept my lips nice and hydrated. Next, because I knew how sweaty and gross I’d get just sitting there, I brought Johnson’s Head-To-Toe baby cleansing cloths so that I could give myself a sort of sponge bath while confined to my hospital bed. They smell super fresh, do a decent job, and didn’t irritate my skin. I wouldn’t personally use them on my baby because her skin is so sensitive to wipes. But that being said, they helped me to feel less gross, and were worth it! I then packed my travel Belif toner and essence belif - Bestsellers On-the-Go Travel Kit , and soaked a bunch of cotton pads in water, and also a handful of them in essence/toner. I was able to sort of cleanse my face this way while being stuck in the bed, and it was one of the few things that made me feel human again. I used the cotton pads soaked in water to wet my face to cleanse, then to wipe off the soap, and followed up with toner. I brought my favorite soothing serum and cream for my skin at the time, as my face during pregnancy was always battling dry itchy red patches. I used dear, klairs - Rich Moist Soothing Serum , and then dear, klairs - Rich Moist Soothing Cream . The scent is barely there and smells natural, and it did wonders for my skin. Lastly I’d finish up with innisfree - Orchid Youth-Enriched Eye Cream Now, the one product that helped me to feel super at-home and refreshed, despite the wreck that was my body, was GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist . It was so refreshing to mist my sleep-deprived self with this stuff; and it kept my skin so hydrated and comfortable. I also brought some dry shampoo; Ouidad - Clean Sweep Moisturizing Dry Shampoo If you’re packing your birth-bag, consider throwing in some skincare!
