Best Sunscreens Under Makeup!
Just because the weather is changing doesn’t mean we can slack off when it comes SPF the health of our skin! I used to neglect wearing SPF because I felt like it ruined my makeup, but thankfully I have found some really great options that wear really nicely under my foundation and tinted moisturizers. I have pretty normal/combination skin so I have quite a few formulas that I enjoy depending on how my skin is behaving. During the warmer months, when my skin is more on the oily side, I typically each for a mattifying SPF. One of my faves is the #Rodan + Fields - Invisible Matte Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30[products]#[FiveStars] It feels smooth and silky when applied, and it’s also clear which I love! It also helps keep my oils in check! Another summertime favorite is the BARE REPUBLIC - Face Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 First of all, I love Bare Republic’s sunscreens because they are reef friendly and contain no chemical sunscreen actives. I also love that it dries down to a powder finish, and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. I use this sunscreen basically year round because it works when my skin is either dry or oily. Another year round fave is the PAULA'S CHOICE - Youth-extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 I tend to reach for it pretty frequently because of its anti-aging benefits and also because of how lightweight it is! It absorbs into my skin super quickly also which is important when I’m in a hurry and don’t have much time to get ready in the morning. When my skin is on the dry side, I love using the VOLITION - Prismatic Luminizing Shield SPF 50 Not only does it protect my skin from harmful UV rays, but it also gives my complexion the prettiest glow. I love wearing it on makeup free days because of the radiance it adds to my complexion, but it also wears beautifully under makeup. It’s also really lightweight and breathable. Another great and super lightweight formula is the MyChelle dermaceuticals - Sun Shield Liquid SPF 50 I love that it evens out my complexion and adds a little bit of glow while still being a matte formula. It’s also blends into the skin really nicely! I’m a huge fan of Mychelle Beauty’s skincare products! Two of my newer SPF products that I have really been enjoying are the dermalogica - Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 Moisturizer and the JANMARINI - Antioxidant Physical Protectant SPF30 The Jan Marini sunscreen is water resistant so I love wearing it when I’m doing anything outdoors because I know I’m not going to sweat it off. It keeps my oils in check and has the added benefits of additional antioxidant protection. The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery is also a great option because not only is it an SPF, but it’s also a really nice lightweight moisturizer. It absorbs pretty quickly and doesn’t leave any type of residue on my skin either. #cheriecreator

My skincare journey!
Hello! My name is Emily and I recently discovered this app and have decided to do what absolutely no one has asked for: explain my somewhat complicated skincare routine and my skin’s history! When I was in middle school I had what I called an acne-stache that I was constantly ashamed of, but you know... puberty be like that. In high school I didn’t really have many problems with my skin besides the occasional hormonal pimple. I even used coconut oil on my face nightly which is something that I would almost never do now (occasionally use it to remove stubborn eye makeup, but that’s pretty rare). Once I moved to Los Angeles from a small town in Northern California, sh*t hit the fan. The last 3 pictures provided show the mess that my skin became which was very weird to me because I had practically lived in LA every summer for around 8 years before moving there in 2017 and never had my skin act in such a way. So, pretty much since then I have been using natural skin care items and am proud of how far I’ve come. My skin’s not perfect (damn hormones) but it’s not too bad either. My most recent skincare routine consists of: Washing my face every other night with Incredible BY NATURE - African Black Soap . Then tone with HERITAGE STORE - Rosewater Aromatherapy Water Rose Petals to prep for GOOD MOLECULES - Niacinamide Serum or (once a week) GOOD MOLECULES - Overnight Exfoliating Treatment . Finally, I moisturize with Incredible BY NATURE - African Shea Butter . I know it sounds super complicated but basically I had been using the african black soap and shea butter nightly since May 2018 (after trying Burts Bees products with no avail) and as my skin got better I added more specific ingredients to target my main issues without causing more problems (and realized that only washing every other night was better for my skin for some unknown reason discovered by accident lol). By summer 2019 I was tired of making diy turmeric masks and decided to try The Ordinary - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution once a week which I liked, but —since I was only using it once a week— I had way too much left by the time it expired so I switched to Good Molecules overnight exfoliating treatment in summer 2020. (I love it and the niacinamide serum so far!). Also IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO USE SUNSCREEN especially when using “brighteners” like glycolic acid and whatnot. This is something I struggle to remember daily but I’m really trying and I’ve been using BARE REPUBLIC - Face Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 I give it 4 stars right now simply because I’m still not sure if it adds to my chin pimples or I’m just crazy, or possibly both..? Idk, but I love how velvety it feels when applying it to my face so I’ll keep using it.

So Close!!! 😫
I have an obsession with SPFs. I’d say it was an unhealthy addiction, but with sunscreens it’s simply not possible. Alright the box promised me a new and improved SHEER finish... and let me just put this out there it was NOT sheer!! I’m a medium skin tone and I looked like a CORPSE when I applied this. I was so white! I rubbed it in with way too much force to make it go away. After a half and hour it was marginally better, but I was still much lighter than my skin tone is normally. Now having said THAT... I loved the feel of this! It was super matte; not shiny at all. I really wanted to love this because it felt amazing on. But that white cast/ flashback was awful! If you’re not white white I just couldn’t recommend this sunscreen. There are far better mineral options out there. However it went under makeup really well so I’ll be using it up, but goodness it goes on WHITE and stays white. Feels great, but just doesn’t look great on me.

Is your skin craaazy dry? Read my do’s and don’t
I’ve got very dry skin in the colder months. I also live in a dry environment. I’ve put together some general do’s and donts that work for me when my skin is seriously dry. Now, please note that I enjoy 99% of the products I’m going to mention, but some I just have to reserve for using in warmer months when my skin is less dry. DO pay attention to what kind of first cleanse you use. I like FORMULA 10.0.6 - Bare Face Beauty Skin-Hydrating Cleansing Oil because it breaks down my makeup and leaves my skin feeling soft. DON’T use a first cleanse that dries your skin out like the GOOD MOLECULES - Instant Cleansing Balm (a little bit drying) DO look at ingredients lists and brand descriptions of cleansers. Opt for something with a gel or milky texture that either doesn’t lather are all, or barely lathers. I enjoy the bareMinerals - Pureness Gel Cleanser (but not if you’re sensitive to coconut). DON’T use a cleanser with harsh acids, such as salicylic acid in the TRULY - CBD Jelly Anti Acne Facial Cleanser , because they can dry out your skin even more. DO use a hydrating toner. I love the PAULA'S CHOICE - Resist Advanced Replenshing Toner because it contains hyaluronic acid and has a soothing, milky texture. DON’T use toners with astringent properties or essential oils like the MARIO BADESCU - Witch Hazel & Lavender Toner (I steaigjt is just don’t really like this even when my skin isn’t super dry). Toners with those ingredients can dry your skin out further. DO layer and mix serums (make sure you do some research first!). I enjoy the Wyldflower Labs - Sunshine Serum - Multitasking Day Repair Serum and LILY SADO - Green Tea + Vitamin C Super Serum . DO use some chemical exfoliants when experiencing a breakout, but be careful to use a concentrated spot application. I like the PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator because it is effective and can be easily applied in an affected area. I use this 1-3x/wk in the PM. DON’T use harsh chemical exfoliants and don’t use them too frequently. The YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner is very strong. It can cause irritation, especially on dry areas, and if used to often has caused white heads. DO moisturize! I love the pixi - Rose Ceramide Cream when I have stubborn dry patches that won’t go away. I also like the unscented, soothing GOOD MOLECULES - Silicone-Free Priming Moisturizer . DON’T use a moisturizer that’s not geared towards extra dry skin like the Clark's Botanicals - Jasmine Vital Cream While this is a nice moisturizer, its light gel texture is more suited for normal-oily skin, or dry skin in the summer.

Sunburns HURT! How to soothe & avoid a burn
Every year, your Summer trip has the possibility of being ruined by a painful sunburn. We all know that it can happen, but maybe we don't undertsand the why and how to avoid it properly. FYI: Sun damage accounts for 90% of visible changes in the skin! This is cumulative, meaning it all adds up over time (source- Skin Cancer Foundation). This shows just how important proper sun protection really is. Sunburn is caused by unprotected sun exposure that damages the skin causing a painful, red, itchy burn. This can range from minor redness to sun poisoning! UVB rays cause burning, whereas UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper causing premature aging. We need to be sure to choose sun protection that is broad spectrum and fully keeps our skin protected from both of these harmful rays. The sun doesn't just cause damage on a hot Summer day but all year round! You need protection everyday no matter the weather. I recommend a separate face and body SPF because formulations tend to be better when it is designed just for the face. •You must reapply! Be sure you are following the directions on your sunscreen products to ensure the best protection possible. Look for SPF 30 or higher. Dr Dennis Gross - Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 This is a daily facial sunscreen to not only protect but improve already existing dark spots. It is a physical sunscreen option great for all skin types, including sensitive. It blends in nicely and feels hudrating. BARE REPUBLIC - Mineral 50 Sport Vanilla-Coco Sunscreen Spray This smells amazing! Unlike some other sunscreen sprays, it has clean mineral ingredients that are safe for all ages. It also has fruit and veggie oils to hydrate and give the skin a little glow! Did I mention this brand is also cruelty free, vegan, and synthetic fragrance free?? ☆What if you already have a burn?☆ -Aloe is now your best friend! It has cooling, soothing and hydrating properties that help calm a pesky burn. For your body, try the Bare Republic After Sun Spray. For your face, check out the Peter Thomas Roth Mask for an extra dose of skincare. BARE REPUBLIC - Hydrating After-Sun Spray A spray using aloe and plant extracts to provide easy to apply relief. I love this option so you don't have to touch a painful burn! PETER THOMAS ROTH - Cucumber Gel Masque This mask is a great option for soothing a facial burn or just increased redness from the sun. It uses cucumber, papaya, chamomile, pineapple and aloe to deeply hydrate and brighten the skin. I love this mask for calming the skin! It feels so refreshing. Have you tried these products to prevent or soothe a sunburn?? Be sure to wear your SPF!

So I bought the ordinary Niacinamide and I have been using it for at least 3 months and I don’t know it’s it’s working. I have acne prone skin and very oily and Idk if I should continue buying the ordinary or try out the glossier one. While I was using the ordinary I have noticed texture on my forehead go away but my cheeks still have texture and I have little blackheads in them too. For my skincare routine I am using is GARNIER - SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Mattifying LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Cetaphil - Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion CeraVe - Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 for Face with Zinc Oxide For the sunscreen I am going to change it because it leaves me very oily. I am going to get the the BARE REPUBLIC - Mineral Body Sunscreen Gel Lotion SPF 30

Something funky...
BARE REPUBLIC - Mineral Body Sunscreen Gel Lotion SPF 30 I found this sunscreen in a Skincare by Hyram video and thought I’d give it a go. Hyram recommended the body lotion to use on the face since they’re pretty much the same thing and the same price. I’m not sure what happened, but when I put this on after my normal skincare, it started to pill and clump up. I wish I had taken a picture of it. I also noticed a pimple pop up after using it (may not be related). I’m not sure what happened and I think it didn’t react well with one of my other products, but I had to return it. I’m giving it 2 starts because it had a nice scent from its ingredients and it was a nice consistency. I also technically didn’t use it as normally directed so I feel like it doesn’t deserve a 1. For anyone curious of what my skincare normally looks like, and hopefully might be able to direct me to a new sunscreen recommendation, I use: Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser Thayer’s Cucumber Witch Hazel toner (don’t come at me, I’m trying to find something new) TO Niacinamide TO Caffeine Eye Solution TO 100% Plant Derived Hemi-Squalane Clinique 72-Hr Moisture Surge

So it’s not bare mineral but for price it quite good... I feel like it feels heavier on your skin and just not as moisturizing as drunk elephant but due price accessibility to get mineral sunscreen I gave it 4 stars.... BARE REPUBLIC - Mineral SPF 30 Tinted Face Sunscreen Lotion

Day one new skin routine - AM Products
Day one new skin routine - AM Products
Today I started a new skincare routine, featuring the EFFACLAR acne line from La Roche-Posay and a few powerful skin resurfacing products made by The Ordinary, to help improve my skin’s tone and texture, as well as erase any scars left behind from the acne. Besides mild acne and the resulting acne scars, my skin also needs help with large pores, dullness, dark circles, and occasional redness. The morning routine that I have put together to address these issues consists of: 1. Cleanser: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser (2% Salicylic Acid/0.05 LHA) 2. Toner: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Clarifying Solution (0.5% Salicylic Acid/2% Glycolic Acid) 3. Serum: The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone (w/ 30% Pure L-Ascorbic Acid) 4. Eye Cream: Murad Resurgence Renewing Eye Cream 5. Acne Treatment: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Treatment (5.5% Benzyol Peroxide/0.4% LHA) 6. Moisturizer: L’Oreal Age Perfect Cell Renewal Day Cream (SPF 15) 7. Sunscreen*: Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen Face Gel-Lotion (SPF 30) *I apply this extra sunscreen for extra protection if I’m going to be spending time outside that day; otherwise I just use the day cream w/ sunscreen in it. 8. Primer: e.l.f. Puff Puff Primer (made with hemp-derived cannabis sativa) I’m excited to track this skincare journey and see the results that these amazing products produce!! They are all very affordable, but contain very effective active ingredients. I look forward to learning even more about skincare as I research and try new products and ingredients, and share it with any of you who are interested (: **I will post my new night routine next week. Wish me luck y’all.** 💋-alena

Coal
Coal
I’d rather get coal than have to always wear sunscreen. It’s the only thing that I am very forgetful about and dislike the smell, plus it feels heavy and oily quite often. I know it’s so important for sun damage and aging but I hope to discover one that I actually like. BARE REPUBLIC - Mineral SPF 30 Body Sunscreen Lotion

Bare Republic three mineral sunscreens - just in time for my beach weekend 🏖 Hawaii recently banned sunscreens containing octinoxate and oxybenzone, two chemical filters which contribute to coral bleaching. Bare Republic, a sub brand of Coola, creates these reef-safe sunscreens that I also saw being sold along Waikiki Beach: . . ☀️ Face Lotion SPF 30 ($12) - Matte, unscented, and powdery. I’m talking Mr. Mime-level white cast. This was pretty water-resistant though, so I didn’t even tan. . . ☀️ Coco Mango Mineral Spray SPF 30 ($15) - This sprays a white lotion with a nice, light tropical scent. I used this from the neck down over multiple beach days and did not burn. But the white cast even stays after showering - you need to loofah this away! . . ☀️ Holographic Shimmer Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 ($15) - I only used this on my collarbones, and it had a nice purple-toned shimmer. . . ☀️ VERDICT: I spent hours on the beach in direct sunlight without sunburn or even a slight tan (with constant reapplication of course). You will look like you’re covered in white paint, but at least you’re doing your skin and the ocean a favor? .
