Sunburns HURT! How to soothe & avoid a burn

Every year, your Summer trip has the possibility of being ruined by a painful sunburn. We all know that it can happen, but maybe we don't undertsand the why and how to avoid it properly.
FYI: Sun damage accounts for 90% of visible changes in the skin! This is cumulative, meaning it all adds up over time (source- Skin Cancer Foundation). This shows just how important proper sun protection really is.
Sunburn is caused by unprotected sun exposure that damages the skin causing a painful, red, itchy burn. This can range from minor redness to sun poisoning! UVB rays cause burning, whereas UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper causing premature aging. We need to be sure to choose sun protection that is broad spectrum and fully keeps our skin protected from both of these harmful rays.
The sun doesn't just cause damage on a hot Summer day but all year round! You need protection everyday no matter the weather. I recommend a separate face and body SPF because formulations tend to be better when it is designed just for the face.
ā¢You must reapply! Be sure you are following the directions on your sunscreen products to ensure the best protection possible. Look for SPF 30 or higher.

This mask is very gentle and helps to sooth and hydrate. All around good for calming dry and/or irritated skin as well as great for after sun exposure, peels, waxing, facials, extractions, and any other activity that can be irritating to the skin. It has extracts of Cucumber, Papaya, Chamomile, Pineapple, Sugar Maple, Sugarcane, Orange, Lemon, Bilberry and Aloe Vera. As someone with dry skin, I use this once or twice a week. If you have oily skin, it is still good to have on hand incase of skin irritation. I definitely recommend this product despite it being on the more pricey end. Best when kept in the fridge for a more cooling and calming effect (but you don't have to).

šMy Current Simple 4 Step Skin Care Routineš
I like to keep it simple. I'm a minimalist and I believe less is more. With my acne prone oily skin I like to keep my routine small with products that I know will work. I currently have 6 products for my routine but they divide at morning and night so, in reality, I'm left with a 4 step routine.
This routine and products work perfect for my skin after trying products for weeks, so this is why I consider this my current routine.

YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser I start my mornings with this cleanser by removing excess oil and products from last night. This cleanser is my new favorite cleanser, it is gentle but very efective. It doesn't leave my skin feeling dry or irritated. The scent is pleasant and minimal. The bottle is made out of glass so it is reusable. This brand is vegan and cruelty free.
The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
If you don't know about this product, Hello? Where have you been? This is my second step and the most important. Niacinamide helps with excess oil and minimizing the look of pores. Perfect for my oily face.
FARMACY - Daily Greens Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer with Moringa and Papaya
Newest addition to my routine and I do not regret. Even though it has a scent I really like it, it is not overwhelming and does not irritate my skin. This oil free gel moisturizer is perfect for the summer days and my oily skin. It leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated without feeling too oily. The jar is made out of glass.
Dr Dennis Gross - Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50
I believe this sunscreen is over my budget but I was recommended this product by a specialist at Sephora so I gave it a try. It leaves a slight white cast that eventually goes away so I don't have a problem with that. It doesn't leave my skin feeling oily I can barely feel it on my skin. It is lightweight but to be honest I would not repurchase just because of the price.

FARMACY - Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm
This balm is perfect for removing makeup but I don't use makeup that often. I mainly use this to remove the sunscreen off my face. It works wonderful and I will repurchase.
YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser Double cleansing is important for removing excess oil and sunscreen.
PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator Holy grail exfoliator. I only use this at night. Check out my other posts talking about this.
FARMACY - Daily Greens Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer with Moringa and Papaya This moisturizer also works great at night. I feel soft and hydrated even after waking up the next day.

This mask is great for people who deal with redness with your the skin. Also some ingredients I like in it are Glycerin which helps bring moisture from the air and brings it in to your skin. First Impressions: Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask
A little background on me first: my skin is dry and not very acne-prone, and also sensitive as all get out.
Lo and behold one of skincareās most famous hydrating masks in the prettiest packaging youāve ever seen. Iām a sucker for good marketing and I was not immune to the hype around this gorgeous looking mask, touted as a āclean at Sephoraā brand thatās a supposed miracle worker for dry, bumpy skin. With niacinamide, ceramides, glycerin, and sodium hyaluronate all high in the ingredients list, it seemed promising enough to at least purchase the smaller travel size.
This mask is thick and white but slides easily and is sheer on the skin. The minty smell is cool and refreshing, and while it tingled a bit on my skin, it wasnāt so alarming that I was racing to wash it off like a lot of other masks Iābe sampled in the past, so I thought nothing of it. I sat for the prescribed 10 minutes but unlike the instructions say I then rinsed my face fully (as a stomach sleeper, overnight masks are not my thing).
I was really surprised to see that my cheeks had turned cherry red and stung quite a bit. At first it looked patchy, like a rash, and only on the lower half of my cheek: as i layered my moisturizer on over it, it calmed a bit but seemed to grow into more even redness all over my cheeks. Iām not sure what ingredient in this mask caused this reaction and Iām not sure it isnāt just a reaction to another product in my routine. It is pricey and well-loved, so Iām hesitant to completely discount it. I may give it another shot with a different cleanser (I was using an exfoliating one today) or toner to see if I get different results.
What experience have you had with this mask? Is there anything different I can do next time to not have this experience?
SUMMER FRIDAYS-Jet Lag Mask
Two new additions I have been obsessing over. š
My wallet questions whether PEACH & LILY - Super Reboot Resurfacing Mask is worth the splurge. It knows I can purchase The Ordinaryās AHA BHA for a fraction of its price but what it doesnāt know is how much my skin loves the Super Reboot. Iāve only used it a few times and so far I can tell that it is gentler on my skin (no post-redness) and it helps with my texture and dullness immediately. Oh and itās hydrating. The Ordinaryās may be cheaper but it leaves my face red, my skin is left feeling tight, and it requires multiple uses to help with my texture. However, despite all that, TOās still works effectively. So, Iām thinking my face > my wallet, and I may have to gently break the news to my checking account.
When I am looking for a sunscreen, my only two main requests are for it to not leave my skin greasy like a pizza and to leave no white-cast. Normally itās one or the other so I never really found a sunscreen that I enjoy applying...until I tried A'pieu - Pure Block Natural Daily Sun Cream SPF45 PA+++ . It has only been a week since Iāve started using it but it has satisfied both my requests and it has a nice, subtle citrusy scent thatās super refreshing! (Wanted to note that my old sunscreen was Supergoop Play Everyday SPF 50 and my boyfriend always commented on my greasy face. So far, he has yet to say anything about this sunscreen.) āØ

This physical sunscreen comes in the firm squeeze tube and pinpoint nozzle which makes it easy to control how much is dispensed. It's a creamy fluid that when you start spreading it, it melts into water gel consistency. I'm impressed with how easily this absorbed into the skin. It leaves a slight sheen but doesn't greasy so perhaps one for normal to oily skins to give a go. Even though it has a high PA++++ rating, it went invisible on me. Just like your everyday moisturizer but with a punch of protection.ā£

Speaking of protection... this sunscreen claims that it can protect the skin from the effect of Infrared Radiation (IRA).IRA has a wave length longer than UVA and it's responsible for the warmth you feel on your skin when you're out in the sun. The heat produced by IRA will break down the collagen structure of the skin and hence, the skin will be more vulnerable to inflammation. ā£

This product counteracts that damage by cooling down the skin surface by 5Ā°C with Water Lily Extract as a skin soothing ingredient. Personally, I don't notice any sort if sustained cooling effect, but I do want to trust it is making all the promises work.ā£

Other than that, all of the ingredients are also safe and skin-friendly according to COSDNA. I'm so glad that after about three weeks of use, it doesn't break me out or irritate my skin. ā£

The same happened with the Make P:rem Safe Relief Moisture Mask. It's my first time using it, so nothing much I can say but my skin loves it! It formulated for sensitive skin and provides soothing hydration. I love how it only has a safe and short list of only 15 ingredients and the Bamboo sheet mask feels very comfortable on the face. Repurchase soon!

dr botanicals - Apothecary Cocoa and Coconut Superfood Reviving Hydrating Mask
This is an overnight mask so you leave it on while you sleep, it works like a moisturizer except youāre only recommended to use it 2-3 times a week. I really like this mask, Iāve used it when I feel like I need that extra hydration for my skin. I gave it four stars only b/c itās a bit sticky. I like to use this in conjunction w/ my moisturizer for that extra hydration.
TONYMOLY - I'm Honey Deep Moisture Rescue Mask
First of all the packaging is adorable. This is a mask thatās meant to give your skin that deep moisture, it has honey + propolis which are very beneficial for the skin, especially dry skin. Iāve noticed my skin really loves propolis so I continue to use this mask. Whenever I use this mask my skin has more of a glow after!
GENERATION CLAY - Ultra Violet Brightening Purple Clay Mask
I was a bit hesitant to use this mask b/c itās one of those āthe tingling means its working!ā type of masks. I can say that when Iāve used it there is a tingling feeling but nothing too extreme it doesnāt leave my skin red or dry at all! When you apply the mask itās purple & then transforms to a grey color as you wait the 15 minutes before you wash it off. I love to use this as a spot treatment overnight, it really minimizes a stubborn pimple the next day.
VERSED - LOOK ALIVE Hydrating Plumping Mask
I recently purchased & posted this mask on here so I was really excited to use it. I absolutely love this mask. It does exactly what it says itās supposed to which is hydrate + plump the skin. When I wash off the mask my skin instantly feels hydrated & A LOT more plump. This is definitely in my top three of masks Iāve tried! I 100% recommend it b/c itās not super harsh on the skin & thereās no tingle which you normally find in products that are meant to plump the skin/lips.
FIRST AID BEAUTY - FAB Pharma Arnica Relief & Rescue Mask
When I use a mask itās for the benefits & partially the experience. However, I donāt mind that this one isnāt as flashy as the other masks b/c it gives your skin the benefits it says it will. I use this when my skin is being problematic. It really heals my skin which I appreciate. I recommend this for people with problem skin!
hey HONEY - SHOW YOUR GLOW Colloidal Gold & Honey Beauty Mask
This is one of those masks that yourāre gonna take selfies while you have it on b/c of the gold pigment, which gives a luxurious feel. I love this b/c it makes my skin more glowy + itās a great alternative to cute & flashy but damaging peel-off masks.
