Is Luxury Skincare Worth It? *discussion*

relpixela
Please add your thoughts in the comments below! I want this to be an open discussion because our skin types and experiences are all so different. To begin: my skin type is combination sensitive dry with an oily nose and chin *and* I am prone to rosacea flare ups. Please keep this in mind when reading... Is luxury skincare worth it? Luxury can mean different things to different people—generally, luxury to me means that it costs over $40-50. It’s not really defined by designer names or anything like that. For me it’s difficult to justify spending tons of money on products without being able to test run them first...because there is no guarantee that the product will work for you and if you have to return it, it can be bad for the environment. Here are my thoughts on some luxury skincare I own:
Allies of Skin Triple Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum
First off, I won this in a giveaway—you WILL NOT catch me paying $72 for a skincare product ever. Second, I had heard rave reviews on this for a long time and was excited to try it. However, it just burned my skin and disrupted my skin barrier. It’s a thick serum and the fragrance is SO sickeningly sweet it kind of makes me nauseous. The brand said they are working on a version without fragrance but idk if I would try it since I had such a bad reaction to this one. It contains fruit acids as well which confuses me since it’s supposed to be hydrating. I used it after cleansing but before moisturizing. I can’t recommend this to anyone with sensitive or dry skin.
mxt - custom mixed serum for me. #mxt - Custom Mixed Serum[products]# I won this in a giveaway as well, however I have very different feelings on it. This serum cost was $56 after my customizations, which is expensive for about 1oz of product. HOWEVER, mxt takes you through a skin quiz and custom mixes your products based on your skin concerns. The fact that it is mixed for you makes it worthwhile to me—it’s not like they are just selling the same mixed product to everyone—it’s just for you. Also, the bottle customization is very cute. My custom serum has a light scent (but no fragrance ingredients) but is very lightweight. I use it after cleansing and toning but before moisturizing. I highly recommend trying this brand out at least once. I WILL be repurchasing this once it runs out!
BONUS: TOOL - FOREO Products. FOREO - LUNA 3 for Sensitive Skin- I purchased this with a gift card gifted to me—it costs $300 😱. I have yet to try it, but right now I use the FOREO - LUNA fofo
on days when I need a little extra exfoliation on my skin without using a scrub or damaging my skin. I absolutely love FOREO products—they are silicone so they are anti-microbial and gentle enough for sensitive skin. Highly recommend to everyone!!

It is something you should buy no matter how expensive it is👍 Best Facial Device
Nowadays many girls have a good sense of skin management. Sometimes they may spend a lot of money on skincare, smart facial devices are their buying priority, which is always very expensive. However, there is controversy over these facial tools. Some think they offer good value for money, others say girls are absolutely cheated by so-called high technology. I have my reservations about other expensive skincare tools, but a facial cleanser is really an invaluable tool for me.  My sister ever used the FOREO Luna 2 Facial Cleansing FOREO - LUNA 2 for Normal Skinfor one year, now she has wonderful skin. After seeing there was a huge difference in her skin. I saved money and bought the FOREO Luna 3 for sensitive skinFOREO - LUNA 3 for Sensitive Skin, as a gift to celebrate my birthday.  In the beginning, I feel painful to spend so much money. Later I console myself that it's an investment, I don’t have to replace pricy brush heads again. So I think that I actually save money in the long run. Ok, back to the point. My skin unfortunately is highly dry. I used to never use brushes because I have very sensitive skin. That's why I chose Luna 3 for sensitive skin. It is super smooth, so gentle and my skin feels softer without any tightness. It has cleaned very well, made my face less dry, brighter, and with less redness in the first use.  In addition, even the stubbornly clogged pores on my nose are gradually getting cleaner after a time. Amazing! It also allowed my skin products to get absorbed faster and better into my skin. I find it interesting that after using the Foreo, whether in the morning or in the evening, I need much less of my skincare products than before because the skin is so well prepared. Although it’s a great product, my sincere advice is that facial cleansers can not be used every day, otherwise, the skin will become more sensitive and fragile, twice a week is enough.  Hope you can get good results too!

Foreo Luna 3 for sensitive skin
Thoughts: This device is something unique and well thought out. I truly love just how soft the stubs are and how they don't hurt my face. I'm always excited to use my foreo because I feel it does help my skincare routine sink in much better. The wonderful thing about this is whatever cleanser you decide to use on this it doesn't get sucked up and it evenly massages it onto your face. This does have a timer that can be set up on the app once you connect so you can choose how long to use it. The plus being this could be used for many months (650 uses I believe) before having to charge it. This doesn't die out fast and I never have a problem when water get's on it. It's pretty easy to use and I can easily grip it without a worry of it falling or having to be in an awkward position. I'm glad I was gifted this because I was curious to know how it would perform and how different it was from my Amazon bought cleansing brush. I been using it for four months now and I can tell you this device does more than just cleanse. This massages my face in circular motions and has helped me with my fine lines. I have a firmer forehead and some wrinkles smoothed up thanks to the 8,000 T-Sonic pulsations this gives per minute. This is and I think will always be a staple in my routine. I'm never going back to my amazon brush that would die out in weeks. Claims: to lift away impurities while the firming massage it gives out leaves skin smooth and younger looking. Targets: Acne and signs of ageing. Texture: soft rubber kind of stubs and a soft velvety body. Price: $199 (Worth it) Recommendation: I do recommend this little guy because it's quick and easy to use. Also if you want to splurge and like a massaging/cleansing device. Favorite parts of my day!
Clean&Clear - Morning Burst Oil-Free Gentle Daily Face Wash You know those people that love getting up in the morning and have all this energy? I’m not one of those people. I’m no where near being a morning person. When I finally convince myself to get out of bed I go straight to wash my face. I like to use cold water when washing my face with this product in the morning because combining that with this face scrub is the easiest way for me to completely wake up. Lots of face washes have irritated my sensitive skin but this one hasn’t and it makes me glad that I’m not trying to find which one works for me anymore because this one does. Use a moisturizer after product use. Clean&Clear - Share NIGHT RELAXIN Deep Cleaning Face Wash I have really bad insomnia and it can be really hard for me to fall asleep , even if I take some melatonin my body just won’t relax. But when I use this nighttime face wash before I go to bed or when I take a shower at night it gets me sleepy instantly. Going to bed with my face feeling soft and nice it the best way to fall asleep. Only thing though is I recommend using a moisturizer after using product. FOREO - LUNA fofo I used to just use my hands to rub in my face washes. Rub in circles rub in circles, but it didn’t do much for me when I was really wanting to exfoliate my skin. When I got this product I was a little scriptural at first thinking how does it know what routine my skin will need? I downloaded the app on my phone and tried it the night I got it. I had a hard time setting it up so I watched a few YouTube videos but once I knew what to do I started right away. This device is Bluetooth and connects to your app when you’re using it. The little skin censors on the back help the device understand what kind of hydration your skin has , and what kind of care it’s in. It scans your cheeks , nose , and forehead. After the scanning is done it programs the amount of time you use the product on that part of your face, and the intensity of the vibration will change depending on different parts of your face and what your skin needs. This product has helped my skin so much especially when I need my face to be exfoliated at the end of a long day. It scrubs away all the makeup and dirt I may have missed with just using a makeup wipe. Overall just love this product and it’s so cute and small it’s super easy to bring on trips because it just fits right into a bag with my face washes. You can use any face wash you want for this product which is what I like about it too. Highly recommend trying this one out

Silicone face scrubbers: manual or electric?
*disclaimer: the Dermalogica cleansing mitt is only available for purchase along with the precleanse balm product, but I will only be reviewing the mitt in this review. Cleansing tools: worth it? What makes them better than just washing with your hands or a cloth? Well, as an acne-prone lady I enjoy using silicone cleansing tools that are anti-microbial, meaning they stop/do not allow the growth of bacteria unlike other types of cleansing brushes. Let’s break down why I like each of these products and whether they are worth it or not! Manual or electric? Manual: dermalogica - Precleanse Balm I had this cleansing mitt before the FOREO, and I used it every day along with my first cleanse to really get all of my makeup and SPF scrubbed clean off of my face. I then started using it to help remove face masks that need a “thorough cleansing” afterward. What I enjoy about this is I can manually control the intensity of the scrubbing so that if I need to be gentler on a specific day I can easily do that. I also like that on the backside, it has a “pop-socket-esque” feel so it rests easily in my hand while I scrub. I have had it for almost 1.5 years and it is still good as new. This scrubber comes with the travel size precleanse balm from Dermalogica on Ulta’s site for $13.50 and I think that’s a steal for something that will last a long time. If you’re looking for some extra “oomph” in your cleansing routine but you’re on a budget. I have to rate it 5/5 stars since it hasn’t let me down yet! Electronic: FOREO - LUNA fofo The FOREO Mini Luna Fofo (a mouthful) is an electronic cleansing device that has sensors on the back side to read the hydration levels in your face. The device then connects to the FOREO app, creating a custom cleansing routine for your face that is broken up into four sections: left cheek/chin, right cheek/chin, forehead, and nose. Depending on the hydration levels in each area of your face, the intensity of the vibrations and the amount of time you get to spend cleansing that area is different. While I like that it chooses these settings for you, I wish I could set some of them myself. The device does not pick up whether you have sensitive skin or rosacea, so on more sensitive areas I have to be gentle if it is on a higher intensity setting. I do believe this gives me a much deeper clean than the manual scrubber and I usually only use this with a gel cleanser in the morning or in the shower (it’s waterproof!) and never with my first cleanse. This retails for $89 at Ulta and this particular device gets 300-400 uses before it runs out of battery. Speaking of that, the screws on the bottom are all rusted out (I have had this for over a year) so I won’t be able to reuse this anyway...but newer versions of this are better designed to prevent this. I will still give it 5/5 stars for the difference it has made in my skin!

My Favourite Serums✨
My skin is sensitive, redness-prone, normal-dry depending on the season, and I have some rosacea on my cheeks. These 4 serums have made a big difference in the texture and overall appearance + health of my skin. I’m going to tell you a little bit about each of them below! • SKINCEUTICALS - Serum 10 Aox+ - I’m sure you’ve heard of the cult favourite Skinceuticals vitamin c serum and this version is just as effective, but for sensitive skin. It has a water-like consistency and sinks into the skin right away. I have definitely found that this has helped to brighten and even my skin tone. I really love this vitamin c and would definitely recommend it (even though it’s pricey). • Corpa Flora - Antidote 03 - Redness Relief - this serum has more of an oil-like consistency and a light floral scent to it that I just love. I have found that when I am consistent with this serum it definitely decreases the redness I have in my cheeks due to rosacea. I typically mix a pump of this with a pump of their Corpa Flora - Antidote HB5 Hydration and it’s the perfect hydrating + soothing cocktail! For anyone with sensitive, redness-prone skin like me, this duo is a must have to combat that! • Allies of Skin - Mandelic Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum - I didn’t know what to expect from this serum but it has blown me away. I often have texture on my cheeks and also get hormonal breakouts and this serum does an amazing job at fighting both of them. I always notice a difference in my skin the next morning when I use this at night! My favourite way to use it is to mix a pump of this with a pump of the Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum (if you can’t tell, I love mixing serums to create the perfect skincare concoction). Both of these products are pricey, if you’re going to splurge on one, make it the Mandelic! • CAUDALIE - Vinoperfect Radiance Serum The Brightening Solution - this one is a favourite in the skincare world and for good reason. The overall brightening and tone-correcting effect this serum has is amazing. I love the clean scent it has and the milky, smooth texture. It sinks into the skin quickly and isn’t sticky or tacky. I wouldn’t say this is a must-have compared to the others listed here, but if you’re a product junkie like me it’s definitely worth having in your collection. #CheriePartner

luxury skincare: one hit, one miss, one meh
I want to preface this post with a few things. 1. I do not support Drunk Elephant. I do not recommend you buy from them. I do not think they are a good company. I don’t want to debate this in the comments, I just want to state my opinions of them up front. 2. “Luxury” is VERY subjective. MY luxury is $40+ for a product. Someone else’s luxury may be $25+. Someone else’s luxury may be $100+. I also don’t want to debate this in the comments. Be sensitive to people of all backgrounds + budgets. 3. I do not think Luxury = good, great, perfect. To me, it usually just means expensive and unobtainable. Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum I really really like this serum. It’s a little stinky, but doesn’t throw me off - a lot of people HATE IT though. This serum got me through some of my worst moisture barrier breakdowns, my worst breakouts, and worst dry skin I’ve ever had. It saved my skin some days. I cannot speak to the antioxidant benefits of this just yet- those take months and even years to see consistent results. I use two pumps in my morning routine after my toner and eye cream. I think it’s a huge step up from your Ordinary or Inkey List HA, so I count this as a HIT! Can be purchased on their website for $75. SHANI DARDEN SKIN CARE - Texture Reform Gentle Resurfacing Serum This is pretty good! I think it could be better for the price. The texture is smooth and applies well - no pilling or issues with irritation either. I use this once a week in my pm routine (no other exfoliants in the week, no other actives in the same routine). This one is a MEH for me, I think there are great exfoliants that rival this one for a fraction of the price. It’s a mild retinoid paired with lactic acidosis and aloe vera for a very unique set of ingredients. Available at Sephora for $88. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Cream this is a total MISS for me. I thought I really liked it at first, but once I started using it consistently I realized I had so many other moisturizers in my collection that were MUCH cheaper than this that hydrated and moisturized my skin just as well, if not better. The texture is creamy and velvety, but kind of sits on top of my skin and doesn’t sink in very fast. Doesn’t really help my extreme dryness, but works well on normal skin. Has peptide complex that is pretty unique to this product! Available at Sephora for $68. The packaging is non recyclable because of the airless pump.

TLC not for me... but I’m not going to waste it
DRUNK ELEPHANT - T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum A while back I tried this product out for about 6-7 weeks so I feel like I got a good idea of how it would work for my skin. In the first three weeks I noticed little white head pimples and some peeling but I thought my skin was just purging and get used to the product. As the weeks went by the peeling and pimples continued so I realized it was an irritation. I tried lessening the frequency and/or diluting with moisturizer, HA and oils to see if that would minimize the irritation. I never had a huge reaction or redness so it was difficult to tell whether I was just getting used to the product or it was causing a minor irritation. At the end of the day I think this product was just too strong for my skin and I couldn’t get it to work for me. Once a week and extremely diluted was the only way I could use it with no irritation and I didn’t really see much benefit from such an infrequent use maybe I would with more time. While I do think this would be a good product if your skin is more tolerant or used to acids or if you don’t have sensitive skin like me the serum did not work for me. Just goes to show you just because a might work for one person it doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. Unfortunately in the skin game I end up with allot of trial and error. Although il the product didn’t work for my face, I do really like this product for my back. I started putting one pump on my upper back where I usually get some breakouts every other day I haven’t seen a single breakout on my back since. The skin on our bodies is thicker and more resilient then on our face and skin in our bodies can usually tolerate higher concentration of acids. I would never buy the product just for my back because of the cost but I’m using up the rest for this.

I DON’T BEAT AROUND THE BUSH
I DON’T BEAT AROUND THE BUSH
First things first, FOLLOW ME! xxxx Although it sounds harsher than mechanical exfoliation, chemical exfoliation is actually gentler on the skin because it doesn't involve scrubbing. Exfoliating helps with acne lesions and cleanses pores, and acids like salicylic, lactic and glycolic fight oil and remove pore-clogging dead skin cells. Acid exfoliators can also have long-term benefits for skin. Unlike physical exfoliants, over time, they smooth, brighten and even out skin tone because they also stimulate collagen production, firm up your skin and reduce wrinkles. Limiting chemical exfoliation to no more than twice per week is crucial, as over-exfoliation causes irritation, inflammation like acne, makes you more susceptible to sunburn and you can lose moisture and disrupt the natural skin barrier. All this being said, I don’t completely dismiss scrubs. I have a couple of scrubs that contain glycolic acid that I absolutely love - stay tuned! MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW ME FOR MORE & that’s it sis!

Glowing skin that’s not oily i
Glowing skin that’s not oily is the most beautiful summer look ever. I’ve found a couple things that help me glow all day long and I figured I’d share! First up hydration is so, so, important, so going in with an alcohol and fragrance free toner can be a great call. So can a thick creamy oil free moisturizer. Using a thick moisturizer can make your skin more oily than dewy or glowy so avoid those. You can also use a serum such as the bliss - Glow & Hydrate Day Serum . Also, I’ve found that the more smooth your skin is, the more your glow shines through. An easy way to smooth out you skin is by using an ice bath. While it’s not true that your pores can “grow” or “shrink” it IS possible to smooth out your skin tone using de-puffing products or methods. The three most common methods are ice baths (plunging your face in ice water), chilling jade rollers, and skincare fridges or just putting products in the fridge. The act of using coldness to de-puff and purify works by slightly numbing your skin, bringing redness to your skin, and then allowing it to cool to room temperature, often enliminating redness. Finally, I was thinking about starting a weekly series where i de-bunk skincare, beauty, and makeup myths. What do you think? Let me know down below which myths to test!

Favourite barrier recovery serum for breakouts
Favourite barrier recovery serum for breakouts
If you’re acne prone and on retinoids, this an amazing multi-tasker. I started my differin journey 2 months ago and was in dire need of a serum that calmed breakouts but also repair my newly sensitized, damaged barrier. By Wishtrend - Polyphenols in Propolis 15% Ampoule I would classify this as a calming antioxidant serum that aids in acne recovery. It sinks into the skin instantly and leaves a slightly dewy finish. This does not feel sticky or heavy, but instead gently nourished and less irritated. I only need 3 drops to cover my entire face and use it overtop an azelaic acid serum. This definitely helps speed up the healing process of my breakouts and keeps my skin healthy, hydrated and supple. I wouldn't rely on this alone if you're dealing with acne, but use it more as a supporting recovery serum alongside tried-and-true actives like salicylic acid or azelaic acid. It truly put By Wishtrend on the map for me and I'm excited to see what other products they come up with. Yes it's a pricier ampoule but this bottle will last a while since a little goes a long way. I will definitely be re-purchasing this when it runs out!

Week 1
Week 1
Sorry for the late response. Long story short I had a lot of personal/family issues throughout the week. Some nights I couldn’t do my usual skincare routine but still do every morning. Well enough about that stuff so after week 1, I don’t see much difference. Perhaps a little lighter but I also have been using other products I have not mentioned a long with basic spray on sunscreen to prevent further sun damage and wrinkles. Along with that Korean skin care routine it has been said (no cite sourced) that the oriental culture and their secret to youthful bright skin is because they are raised with using and live by sunscreen. Apparently the recommendation (still haven’t read the can) is that we should apply sunscreen every 2 hours that we are outside. We should even use it in the winter/all other seasons because we still get those UV rays. I did not know this! I thought one application and we’re good but nope! No wonder I still get tanned/sunburn after application in the past! So back on to the rest of the products! OBAGI - Exfoliating Polish - I still really love this product, I felt like this first week and 2 I have not used it as much as I liked. I have dry skin and with the other products that cause dryness (will explain later) I should have used it more. I have combination so when I have dry skin I use this product 2-3 times a week. On my “oily-er” days. I use it 1-2 times a week. I bet if I used this product more my milia/clogged pores would have diminished quicker. ZO SKIN HEALTH - Exfoliating Cleanser Normal Cleanser - I actually like this cleanser. I find it odd though, perhaps because I’m not used to having normalized skin lol, but afterwards my skin does not feel tight nor oily. This is by far the best cleanser I have used when it comes to my combination skin. However, I’m not sure if things will change during winter due to the fact that my skin is extra dry during cold weather but for the summer it seems to have my t-zone and other areas balanced. ZO SKIN HEALTH - Complexion Renewal Pads - er... I have brought down my rating due to the fact that I do not see any difference. I meant to get my vitamin-c brightener from Zein Obagi and accidentally got the wrong bundle but I tend to love all their products so I was willing to try. I see no difference in my skin and either this product or the Acne Control dried up my skin for the first week. I will not be getting this product again. Although, this may help with sensitivity and ph balance. Their other products tend to have multi-purpose (eye cream has retinol which also fights acne, milia, clogged pores, blackheads.) So I’m not too concerned about using this particular product. I rated it a 3-star because it did not break me out or cause any redness. ZO SKIN HEALTH - Daily Power Defense - I also lowered the ratings for this because you literally won’t see any(to be continued..)
