How to get a PERFECT makeup base

avatar
relpixela
Hey y’all!! I hope you’re having a great week so far. I have to be honest...I haven’t been doing my makeup much during quarantine which has been a bummer because it’s so FUN! Over the years I’ve gone through phases of full coverage makeup, light coverage makeup, no makeup, cream/powder...you know the drill. Right now my skin type is combination dry with acne and rosacea. My skin tone is very fair and pink compared to the rest of my body. Due to my conditions, I try to create a dewy base but still enough coverage to balance out my red spots without having super full coverage matte makeup that clings to my dry spots. So I decided to challenge myself to use a SUPER full coverage matte foundation to see if I could make it look skin-like...and long lasting...challenge accepted!! Here are the steps I took and the products I used to achieve this look: 1. EXFOLIATE. I usually am not a huge fan of physically exfoliation but if I plan on wearing makeup I usually use a gentle exfoliating cleanser. Today I used the Microfoliant from Dermalogica dermalogica - Daily Superfoliant
which is a charcoal-like powder which, when mixed with water, turns into a super gentle paste to slough off dry, dead skin. 2. HYDRATE. I used a hydrating toner, hydrating serum, and a facial oil underneath, as well as a hydrating makeup primer. I have not been using the hydrating serum long enough to give you a rating but I really like the other products! Other than that I am no longer supporting Milk Makeup due to their internal racism in their corporate setting. INDIE LEE - CoQ-10 Toner
WILD MAGIC BEAUTY - MOON LIGHT - Goji Berry + Sea Buckthorn Facial Oil
Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration SerumMilk MAKEUP - Hydro Grip Primer
3. CONCEALER FIRST. Yup. I said it. I like using my concealer underneath my foundation and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes...I learned this trick from Jackie Aina on YouTube and it has saved my looks! I conceal my red areas, under eyes, and my breakouts pre-foundation. The concealer I used today is the URBAN DECAY - All Nighter Waterproof Full-Coverage Concealer
in the shade fair neutral. It’s SO DRYING. But it stays in place! 4. FOUNDATION. Ok. I used the same line’s foundation URBAN DECAY - All Nighter Liquid Foundation
in the shade 1.5. I would rate this lower because it’s a little too drying but I mixed in a drop of the Wild Magic Beauty facial oil and MY GOD! It transformed and wore like a whole other foundation. 5. PRO TIP! Before moving on to the rest of your face, use a setting spray on your base. Let it dry completely!! This will make your makeup appear more skin-like and wear longer. 6. FINISH YOUR FACE. Ta-Da! Now you have a full face that will last all night and doesn’t crack or crease. #CheriePartner

A Day From Hell, Foundation Reviews Amended
How many times did I go in Ulta today? Enough that they now have my phone number memorized... so this all started with smashbox fair neutral foundation making me look like a geisha... only for fair cool/warm in urban decays Naked and All Nighter lines to be TOO DARK. This made more sense to me as growing up buying cheap foundation I was always the fairest shades. Yet suddenly smashbox through me off. So after going in and out so many times buying and returning since testers are not available due to covid I finally said “please. I need help.” I was exhausted, seeing red, about to cry, frustrated out of my mind. They agree my undertones are neutral leaning towards cool. Unfortunately neutral does not exist in urban decays fairer shades for some reason so we went with cool. I tried their naked line which DOES have neutral fair shades but the coverage was medium and I didn’t enjoy that. Though it match my skin flawlessly in shade 11nn which they called double neutral. It is second to lightest of shades in the urban decay naked line. So I finally decided on fair bisque (super fair) w/cool tones aka shade 1.5. I’m considering keeping the naked line product to use to cancel out the rosy tones in the all nighter line. Urban decay are you reading this??? Make some fair neutral all nighter darn it! 😫 So I guess a warning to add two of my past review. Smashbox tones oxidize severely and quickly. Any color you see in the bottle will barely exist on your skin. As urban decay all nighter full coverage has strong tones. They call it subtle online but it’s not subtle. The Ulta employees agreed with me. They’re undertones are very strong. Both great foundations just beware of skin tones.

“NO FAIL” RETINOL ROUTINE - PM
I shared earlier this week my “no fail” AM skincare routine the products seen in that post I’ve used time and time again. They’ve never let me down and along with the ones listed here, are repurchases that keep my skin happy and healthy! Milk MAKEUP - Vegan Milk Cleanser I like to use this cleanser when my face needs a little extra pampering. Milk Cleanser is super soft and gentle and leaves my face feeling very nourished. INDIE LEE - CoQ-10 Toner same as used in the AM. I'm from - Rice Toner I honestly cannot get enough of hydrating products, especially when I am using my retinal. I have probably five open at this time and will use them all or a few at a time. This Rice Toner is so soft and smooth. If you’re into essences or toners this is a must try! I splash a few drops into my hand and then pat it onto my face leaving it wet until I add.... THE inkey LIST - Hyaluronic Acid Serum I lock the Rice Toner in with HA. I am indoors most of the time, a bit of a recluse, but my skin still get very dry so I lock in the hydration first and end with the moisturizer! Medik8 - Crystal Retinal this is a bit expensive but well worth it to me because within weeks of use I saw significant changes. I’ve been asked my so many what I use for skincare as I have hardly any lines and I used to worship the sun with no sunscreen (⚠️) But I’ve been lucky and take very good care of my skin now. You only need a pea size amount of retinal for your face and add it to DRY skin. YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask last up is my new favorite (on my second bottle), the YTTP Dream Mask. You only need a small amount with this and I go through about two a year as I use it every night. It’s gentle enough to use nightly but if you’re using other treatments you may want to alternate nights (if you have sensitive skin as it has vitamin c). You can put a light layer of moisturizer on before applying this but for me, this is plenty. The Crystal Retinal I use is non-drying so I am good with just the mask. But if your retinol tends to dry your face, I’d recommend adding a light layer of moisturizer before the dream mask. ⭐️ That’s it! You could eliminate the 2 toners (Co-Q10 & Rice Toner) and simplify it down to 4 steps. I’ll be sharing my PM exfoliating routine soon! One of my favorites!!! I never thought I’d love exfoliating so much 😂 Much ❤️ my @cherie family! 🍒 #cheriecreator

Skincare swaps for Summer to Winter ☀️➡️❄️
Unless you live in a neutral weather area year-round, it’s important to adjust your skincare routine based on the weather outside—temperature, humidity, and other factors should play into your routines. For my sensitive, red, acne-prone combination skin, this is how I do it! I keep some of my routine the same, but here are some highlighted products that only show up in the summer or winter for me: SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS ☀️ Sunday Riley UFO Oil: SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Acne Treatment Face Oil don’t ask me why this works wonders in the summer but doesn’t in the winter! I have been in this cycle since 2018, and it just works for me best in the summer. I think it’s because this is a dry oil formula so it’s not really as moisturizing as your skin needs in the winter. First Aid Beauty Face Moisturizer: FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT THE ULTRA REPAIR CREAM!! This is the facial moisturizer version that comes in pump packaging. It’s a much more lightweight formula, almost gel-like, making it great for the summertime when you’re sweating more and your face is hit with more humidity. This doesn’t give me enough moisture in the winter. Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask: SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask Hear me out. I’ve said this time and time again. This is NOT a hydrating mask. The top ingredient behind water is a natural exfoliant (chestnut seed extract) so really it’s a polishing mask. In the summer I wear it overnight over another cream or oil instead of as a wash off mask. I’ve noticed that it reduces my redness and helps my breakouts clear faster. Since this doesn’t hydrate me, I use it more often in the summer. WINTER HIGHLIGHTS ❄️ Paula’s Choice Azelaic Acid Booster: PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster just want to say this up front—even though I like this product, I don’t condone the past racist actions of the brand owner and will not be purchasing from them moving forward. This is a product I already had in my possession. That being said, if you have rosacea, this will be your best friend. It’s all about calming redness and fighting acne without exfoliating—perfect for winter. I will use this on top of serums but under heavy creams. Don’t use this with probiotics, as this is anti-bacterial, so it may create a reaction in your skin. Lactic Acid Serums: The Ordinary - Lactic Acid 5% + HA SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment I’ve linked both of these products since they both work for me but one is drastically lower in price. Lactic acid is a gentle AHA that can help fight acne. I like both of these serums, and use them at night. Wild Magic Beauty Oil: WILD MAGIC BEAUTY - MOON LIGHT - Goji Berry + Sea Buckthorn Facial Oil this is my go-to night oil in the winter. So moisturizing and luxurious! #CheriePartner

SKIN GLOW 101: Facial Oils 💦
With beauty trends changing over the years (we all loved a good “full face matte full glam” look in 2016) we see many techniques come and go. With the popularity of natural, dewy makeup looks emerging over the past couple of years we turned to skincare to really put an emphasis on what’s beneath our “mask” of makeup. One of the best steps to make your makeup and skin look glowy and dewy is a facial oil. Facial oils can seem scary at first: if our skin produces oil, why would we put it on our faces? Won’t it clog our pores? Well all skin types are different and will react differently, but it’s important to remember that there are different types of oils we can use on our face. Many people will be quick to avoid coconut oil, as an example, but are willing to put squalane and rosehip seed oil all over our faces daily. Different oils have different properties and purposes. I have to be really careful which oils I use since I have sensitive, acne-prone skin with rosacea. One of my favorite daily facial oils is the Wild Magic Beauty Moon Light facial oil. WILD MAGIC BEAUTY - MOON LIGHT - Goji Berry + Sea Buckthorn Facial Oil I have to be completely honest and transparent with you guys—this oil was gifted to me from the brand, but all thoughts here are my own. When I first received this I started using it daily for a week. I was breaking out really badly so I took it out of my routine for 2 weeks but I realized my breakouts were caused by something else and I’ve been using this consistently daily for the past 3 weeks with no issues! This oil is a high quality blend of oils: sea buckthorn, goji berry, pomegranate, raspberry, tamanu, and green tea oils and none of these are comodegenic (pore-clogging). While this is a blend of multiple oils, it actually is pretty lightweight and sinks into my skin quickly, allowing me to use it day and night! The scent is a pleasant, not-overbearing floral. My favorite way to use it is two drops in the morning under my SPF or three drops on top of my PM routine. It provides a beautiful, natural glow without any stickiness or oiliness. It is a great base for any dewy makeup look! Bottom line, this is such a luxurious oil. I am so happy Wild Magic Beauty hit it out of the park with this, as they’re a small indie brand. We have to support small businesses y’all! Even though this oil is high quality and comparable to luxury oils it is $48 for 1oz. It can seem pricey to some but in my opinion facial oils last months (6-10 for me) so it’s a wise investment. WMB offers a minis kit with all of their products so you can try them before you buy full size, and I love that about them. I would recommend this oil for both dry and oily skin types leaning more toward the dry side. I have combination skin with oily, normal, and dry spots and this works well all over! I have to rate it 5/5 for my overall experience. What are some of your favorite facial oils?

My Favourite Serums✨
My skin is sensitive, redness-prone, normal-dry depending on the season, and I have some rosacea on my cheeks. These 4 serums have made a big difference in the texture and overall appearance + health of my skin. I’m going to tell you a little bit about each of them below! • SKINCEUTICALS - Serum 10 Aox+ - I’m sure you’ve heard of the cult favourite Skinceuticals vitamin c serum and this version is just as effective, but for sensitive skin. It has a water-like consistency and sinks into the skin right away. I have definitely found that this has helped to brighten and even my skin tone. I really love this vitamin c and would definitely recommend it (even though it’s pricey). • Corpa Flora - Antidote 03 - Redness Relief - this serum has more of an oil-like consistency and a light floral scent to it that I just love. I have found that when I am consistent with this serum it definitely decreases the redness I have in my cheeks due to rosacea. I typically mix a pump of this with a pump of their Corpa Flora - Antidote HB5 Hydration and it’s the perfect hydrating + soothing cocktail! For anyone with sensitive, redness-prone skin like me, this duo is a must have to combat that! • Allies of Skin - Mandelic Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum - I didn’t know what to expect from this serum but it has blown me away. I often have texture on my cheeks and also get hormonal breakouts and this serum does an amazing job at fighting both of them. I always notice a difference in my skin the next morning when I use this at night! My favourite way to use it is to mix a pump of this with a pump of the Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum (if you can’t tell, I love mixing serums to create the perfect skincare concoction). Both of these products are pricey, if you’re going to splurge on one, make it the Mandelic! • CAUDALIE - Vinoperfect Radiance Serum The Brightening Solution - this one is a favourite in the skincare world and for good reason. The overall brightening and tone-correcting effect this serum has is amazing. I love the clean scent it has and the milky, smooth texture. It sinks into the skin quickly and isn’t sticky or tacky. I wouldn’t say this is a must-have compared to the others listed here, but if you’re a product junkie like me it’s definitely worth having in your collection. #CheriePartner

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
I don’t use this as a moisturizer, I use this as a light coverage foundation. I definitely fell for the hype with this product. I was totally not in the market for a tinted moisturizer. Using this alone as a moisturizer did not make my skin feel moisturized at all during the winter, perhaps when I try this in the summer it would work. I have post inflammatory hyperpigmentation for my previous acne. This tinted moisturizer does make the scars appear a bit faded. I’d recommend this product if you’re looking for something lightweight and to even out your complexion. I did wear this during a workout and my sweat made streaks...I was able to dab it away but you could still see the pathway the sweat made. So if using this in the summer time I’d definitely set it! Help! I can’t find any makeup to suit me!
Help! I can’t find any makeup to suit me!
No lie, peeps- I really have tried everything in that basket and not one of them works for me. Nothing matches my color, and nothing seems to apply smoothly, without caking up or looking unnatural. I think my cool undertone plays a large role here. A bit of background and general info.... Skin Type: Oily/ Combo Color: Light-Medium Undertone: Cool Age: 33 What I’m looking for - A sheer or light coverage facial complexion Skincare/Makeup Hybrid (BB Cream, CC Cream, Tinted Moisturizer, Moisturizing Tinted Primer or Tinted SPF). SPF at least 30, preferably 40-50 How I see it- There’s 2 options.... 1. A facial SPF (preferably one that doubles as a moisturizer or primer) that I can wear year round under makeup. PLUS- A light coverage complexion makeup (bb or cc or tinted moisturizer etc etc). That I can change with the seasons, as my color and needs change. 2. The Unicorn!!! All of these products rolled into one. Definitely Cruelty free- Preferably Clean, Bonus Points for All Natural. What I’m using now is Paulas Choice Super Light Daily Wrinkle Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (too watery on its own so I have to) MIX WITH ELF+ Matte Oil Control Ant and all suggestions welcome!!

Acne-friendly makeup with full coverage... [b&a pic]
It is super annoying to put on heavy makeup layer by layer, but it is unavoidable to get a perfect look for people like me with lots of acne scars and pimples. Sometimes the situation may even get worse since some products can clog pores, which leads to more pimples and scars if not treated in time. I just want to share some products and tips that I found quite helpful to get a great look without complicating procedures.    What I do first after waking up is to drink a whole glass of warm water to clean my gut and wake it up. Then and go to wash my face with a scrub cleanser. I prefer a scrub cleanser than a normal cleanser is because the tiny particles in the scrub can effectively exfoliate all the dead skin produced during the night in a gentle way. This is an amazing preparation for the following makeup.   After that I apply an oil-free moisturiser which is good for oily skin like me, and a bit of spray over my face. I like spraying my face and neck after the cleansing, moisturiser, and after the foundation. It is just a thermal spring water spray that provides sheer hydration I can handle, especially in the summertime.    The scrub and the spray preps for the skin for makeup and here is the last tip I want to emphasise. My way to camouflage all my acne or pimple or whatever the flaw on my face, is to apply concealer and setting powder two times in a makeup: one before foundation and one after the foundation. I put on the concealer and use powder to set it, and that is the first layer of coverage that stays longer than it’s on the foundation. I follow this again after the foundation to make it stay longer and cover better.    I know that full coverage tip sounds scary to somebody, but it is really hard to conceal all the marks on make. However, the process is easy to remember and follow on a daily basis and the feeling on face is quite light in face. The whole look gets more dazzling when our face gets slightly oily after a few hours.

Rimmel London insta CC primer in green is a go to for my sensitive skin. This stuff is thin and green but applies smoothly without leaving your skin noticeably green. I mainly wear it on my cheeks to help neutralize any redness and top with powder. Don’t even need foundation cuz this stuff works so nicely. If I have any breakouts, which are mainly on my chin, I put a couple layers of this on the blemish and top with concealer and powder. Definitely helps with covering redness from the blemish and keeping the makeup in place! I would recommend this primer to anyone who suffers with redness and for a price of $8 I say it’s a great deal! I give this product 5 out of 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 RIMMEL - Insta CC Primers

The Secret to Flawless Base Makeup (For Oily Skin)
The Secret to Flawless Base Makeup (For Oily Skin)
Not everyone is blessed with perfect skin, however, that does not mean that we cannot achieve a flawless base makeup that makes our face look ten times better. I am far from having the perfect skin, but whenever I take the time to do the following steps and use the products mentioned below, everyone was amazed by how clear and bright my skin looks. My Skin Type I am fair skinned and have a neutral skin tone. My skin is extremely oily, and as a result, I have enlarged pores and uneven skin texture. My biggest skin concerns include sensitivity and being acne-prone. This leads to my skin being easily irritable and looking red all the time. On top of that, my face has a lot of acne scars and hyperpigmentations. I end up having very uneven skin tone. Tips to the Perfect Base Exfoliate: I always exfoliate my skin before special occasions to ensure that my skin is smooth and clear. It helps remove all the dead skin cells and sebum buildups, therefore, improving my skin texture and brightening my skin complexion.  1. Primer: Using a primer helps smooth out uneven skin texture and fill in the pores, so that after applying base makeup, pore appearances will be minimised and the skin looks like it has a filter on. 2. Choose the correct foundation: It is important to choose the right foundation that suits your specific skin type. For me, I have oily skin and hyperpigmentation, so I tend to gravitate towards products that have high coverage, matte finish and are long-lasting. If I use a lightweight, moisturising foundation, I will end up looking too greasy and my blemishes will still be visible, which is no longer a flawless base makeup for me. Products  Dermalogica daily microfoliant $89: it is definitely an investment piece, but since it is the best exfoliate that I have used so far, it is worth the price. It is well known amongst the beauty community because it is very gentle on the skin but effective. It is a rice-based powder that activates upon contact with water. I have noticed that my skin becomes so soft and bright after using it, and the base makeup applies better too. There is less creasing. Benefit Matte Rescue $56: Sure there are cheaper drugstore primers out there, but this primer has a very unique texture that is perfect for acne-prone and oily skin. It is in a cool gel texture that feels very lightweight on the skin and fills in the pore perfectly while being hydrating. Also, it contains Australian Tea Tree Oil, an antibacterial ingredient to help control acne. My base makeup becomes a lot more long lasting if I use this primer. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Matte $63: Once again this product is not that affordable compared to drugstore products, but to achieve flawless skin, sometimes it is necessary to spend a little. It is a cc cream which means it contains beneficial ingredients such as anti-aging and hydrating serum that does not irritate my sensitive skin. It is full coverage, covering my blemishes and redness, allowing my skin to look perfect. It leaves a matte finish and is very long lasting. Would highly recommend!
