How I Make My DIY Manicure Last Forever

One of the silver linings of quarantine is that it has forced me to learn how to do a really good at-home manicure. I don’t think I’ll be going back to a nail salon even after quarantine ends! Here are some of my best tips and tricks that I’ve learned to give myself a DIY manicure that lasts for a week, or even longer: Dehydrate your nails. I use a cleanup brush and an acetone-based nail polish remover on my nails before painting them to make sure there is no cuticle oil or other residue on my nails. Do not soak your nails in water. When the nail plate gets wet, it absorbs water and expands. This means that the nail polish will dry in a different size and shape than it would on your naturally dry nails, making it more likely to chip later! Multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat. My rule of thumb is if the first coat is completely opaque, then it’s probably too thick. Thin coats dry more evenly, which will prevent your nails from smudging. Let each coat of polish dry fully before painting another coat. Along with painting thin coats, I let each layer of polish — base, color, top coat — dry for at least 10 minutes before adding another coat. This is why a DIY manicure pairs perfectly with Netflix! Cap the tip. “Capping” or “wrapping” the tip means adding a little bit of polish to the very tip of your nail, where your polish is likely to chip from typical daily tasks like typing or cleaning. I prefer to cap the tip on my second-to-last coat of color polish, so that if the capped tip adds a little too much polish I can just fix that with the final color coat. Use a cleanup brush. Even after months of perfecting my at-home manicure skills, I still make mistakes. This is why a cleanup brush is key: with an old lip brush and some nail polish remover, I can remove any excess polish and create a clean line at my cuticle, which gives my manicure that really professional look. Reapply top coat every 2–3 days. This is essential for making your at-home manicure last for a week or more! Adding this extra coat of polish (and capping the tip, if you’d like) will help prevent your nails from chipping. Make sure you also cover where your nail polish ends near the cuticle! Below are some of my favorite manicure and nail care products: OLIVE&JUNE - The Poppy
This really changed the at-home manicure game for me. The wide round shape makes it much more comfortable for me to hold the polish brush with my nondominant hand, so I can paint slowly and evenly. OLIVE&JUNE - Nail Polish Topcoat
You can make any nail polish last forever if you have the right top coat. This top coat creates a super glossy finish and doesn’t take forever to dry. Any nail polish with a wider brush: For easier application and thin, even coats Cleanup brush: The easiest way to make your mani look crisp and clean Cuticle oil: On painted or bare nails, to keep them strong and healthy

GAME-CHANGING TIPS FOR THE PERFECT MANI 💅🏻💖✨
Everyone always wants to know how I manage to keep my nails looking healthy & freshly painted every time they see me. And no, I don’t just paint my nails every time before seeing them. It’s a whole process and habit that I’ve curated for the healthiest strongest nail routine! These are all things that I do and have learned from listening to pro nail artists, from nail care brands, etc.: 1) For a mani that always looks fresh and glossy, repaint your Top Coat every 2-3 days to keep up the shine! You can turn a slightly buffed nail back to it’s glossy glory days easily. This way, your nails will always look like they’ve just been painted and it also prevents chipping! I love my OLIVE&JUNE - Nail Polish Topcoat - it dries fast and looks super shiny. 2) When prepping your nails for your next manicure, shape and cut your nails with your old polish still on! This way, you can easily visualize the shape of your mani without getting distracted or thrown off by your natural nail line. 3) Use a cuticle oil, treatment, or serum! This will help promote healthy growth of your nail, keep away any dry cuticle bits around your nails and always complement your mani with smooth, beautiful cuticles! I love OLIVE&JUNE - Cuticle Serum Set - it’s super lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin so goodbye greasy fingers! 4) More on the cuticles, try not to cut or trim your cuticles- push them back gently with your nail or a cuticle stick instead! But make sure your cuticles have been softened (like a few minutes after applying a cuticle serum or right after a shower). This is something my grandma taught me when I was very young. By gently maintaining your cuticles with this method, your cuticles will never over grow to the point where you need to trim them! Once you start cutting/trimming them, it’s really hard to stop. 5) If you struggle to keep you hand still while painting your nails, try Olive&June’s Manicure Tool, Poppy! It’s a rubber removable tool that fits over most nail polish handles and its ergonomic shape guides you to make smoother and more even strokes! OLIVE&JUNE - The Poppy Manicure Tool 6) Keep up the hand cream! I keep it on my bedside table as a visual reminder to put some on. If you want a super rich one, try L'OCCITANE - Shea Butter Hand Cream ! But if you want something more lightweight and not as thick/sticky feeling after applying, try OLIVE&JUNE - Olive&June Hand Serum ! This will really help moisturize and nourish your hands daily. 7) Use an oil-based, acetone/alcohol-free nail polish remover. An oil-based one like ella+mila - Soy Nail Polish Remover Unscented will help to nourish nails your nails while removing nail polish instead of stripping them of its natural oils! *I know I mention Olive&June a lot but I just want to mention I’m not sponsored by them, I just truly love their products!

DIY Fall Ombre Nails 🍁🍂💅🏻 Super Easy! ✨
These ombre nails are what I call “nail art without actually needing to be good at art”! These nail polish shades are perfect for Fall and definitely make me want to cozy up in bed with a book. Here is what I used: Thumb & Pinky: OLIVE&JUNE - HGC Nail Polish Pointer Finger: OLIVE&JUNE - JJ Nail Polish Middle Finger: OLIVE&JUNE - MG Nail Polish Ring Finger: OLIVE&JUNE - JO Nail Polish I love Olive & June nail polishes because their wide flat brushes make painting SO easy and the formulas are always so creamy. Once they dry, they are not going to chip or crack away! (Seriously! They last a good 2 weeks on me before I see a single chip!) They are $8 on the Olive & June website and they also offer *free* polish painting classes! They have beginner level classes up to advanced that teach you nail basics and nail art! Some tips for painting your nails: - Always build up the color with thin coats (it looks better and will dry much faster than thick goopy coats) - I like to do 3 strokes when painting each nail (first down the middle, and then one on each side) don’t overdo it on the strokes otherwise your polish may gunk up! - Wait 5 minutes between each coat and at least an hour after your top coat - Use some nail polish remover to prep your nail beds before application so it removes any impurities and oils from your nail (which can affect the longevity of your polish!)

Nail Art Stamping 101 - $5 Nail Stamping Kit
Nail Art Stamping 101 - $5 Nail Stamping Kit
If you’re looking for inspiration for nail art at home, then you come to the right place! A good thing about stamping nails is that it is fast and easy (comparing with painting) and it is super affordable. You can get different looks by changing the base colors and patterns. The fact is if you’ve ever attempted nail stamping, you’ll know that it’s not necessarily as easy as those Tiktok videos. Today I want to sharei some tips tricks and hacks on how to stamp your nails perfectly As always, start your nail design with a good base coat to protect your natural nails. This will also protect them from staining. Remember to use 2 coats for best opacity. And make sure that the base coat is completely dry before stamping. For stamping you will need: a stamper a scraper and a stamping plate. 1. Look for a good stamping polish. (Normally more pigmented than normal polish) 2. Put a tick layer of polish on the stamping image 3. To scrape off the excess polish, Hold the scraper that comes with your stamper, at a 45-degree angle to the plate and scrape quickly and lightly *Working quickly is the key* 4. Using tapes quickly clean off the extra pattern 5. Pushing your nail straight into the image instead of rolling it over it 6. Wait until the stamping has dried before top coat picture polish - Classic Nail Polish SHANY - Stamping Nail Art Image Plate Holder/Scraper/Stamper All in One Set picture polish - Stamping Plate Crazy Cat Lady

CANT CLOCK THIS MANICURE!💅🏽
CANT CLOCK THIS MANICURE!💅🏽
So during covid, nobody was able to get out and getting my nails done was something I did every month to pamper myself☺️ Since I couldn’t go to the salon, I decided now was the time to bring the salon to the home and really give polygel nails a try to get the best manicure I could at home👏🏽 and I have to say, after a few tries, I’ve now gotten the hang of it completely and can ensure if you follow these simple steps, you can achieve the look too👍🏽 STEPS So for my polygel, I invested in a whole polygel kit from amazon which was very affordable. MAKARTT - French Collection Poly Nail Gel Extension Kit and also this is some great quality gel! So I start off by buffing my nails with the filer also from Makartt! The specific one I use is the MAKARTT - Zebra Nail Files 100 180 Grit this is the perfect grit as one sir is great for after the gel and one is perfect for buffing the natural nail! So I use the smoother side to first buff the natural nail and the wipe the nails after with some rubbing alcohol to remove the dirt, oil and dust and then I quickly wash my hands with JUST WATER (no soap as that as moisture) After drying my hands, I got in with one layer of the base gel and cure that under the my lamp Morpilot - UV Nail Dryer Curing Lamp which is affordable and works great!!❤️ so under the lamp for 1-2 mins Take your hand out and use a lint free cotton or even a paper towel and soak that in rubbing alcohol and wipe down the nails. Normally there is a sticky layer after the base coat is cured so you want to remove that before applying the polygel😋 Once the sticky layer is off, I then take the kit itself and start sculpting out the polygel on top of my natural nail! Everything comes in the kit so I use any one of the gels, and use the brush and spatula duo that’s also in the kit to pic up a pea size amount, apply it on the finger (I start with my pinky) and then in a cup, make sure you have some rubbing alcohol as you will need to wet your brush in the solution to then sculpt the nails the way you want them and smooth out the gel 😊 Once you are happy with the gel, cure the gel under the LED to set the look Once all the nails are done, wipe each nail down with rubbing alcohol again and the start to buff and file and smooth the nail to remove any bumps thin out the gel a little before painting them Buffing and filing done? Ensure to wash your hands once again with no soap and then dry it off and start painting it with your favourite gel polish or even regular polish (I prefer gel as it has a faster drying time)😅 After all the nails are painted in the colour, apply one layer of the top coat and cure that for the final time, and voila you end up with the most gorgeous, SHINY nails ever!!🤩

I used a nail art pen to draw the polka dots on my nails. This one is double sided with two different sized dotters, so if I wanted to make a bigger dot, I just dropped them on instead I f drawing them on/drawing them bigger. Its honestly way easier than using a toothpick because a toothpick is too pointy and you’d actually have to draw the circles/dots, whereas with this dotter you can just drop them on! The fact that it also has two sized dotters helped so if you wanted bigger dots, you just use the yhe larger dotter. This nail tool was easy to use, its a no brainer tbh, but it also came with a whole set of nail tools that are really helpful in nail design and upkeep. This look took me a while to do just because of how many colours I decided to use but it was an easy style to do even though it was time consuming. I just put on a movie and took my time 😊 So the nail tool tagged Maniology - Dual Sided Nail Art Brush and Dotting Tool Set Cute Turquoise contains something similar in the kit, but the tool pictured here was something I got in a nail kit that was gifted to me. It came with some drugstore nail polish and some other nail tools like a nail file, cuticle nipper and some nail art tools as well like this dotter but also a nail art brush. The item tagged is probably the closest thing you may find, although the dotters in the product tagged has the two sized dotters on different tools. This is not a huge deal, it will still help you achieve the look you want ☺️

DIY FRENCH NAILS HACK
DIY FRENCH NAILS HACK
I love the look of French tipped nails put achieving the look is hard for me to freestyle. Many years ago I saw a tip in a magazine on how anyone can achieve this look at home. All you need to create the design is reinforcement stickers that will make the outline for the design. HOW TO: I start off by placing the stickers on all of my nails where I want the design to be. (Some nails may require more then one sticker.) Next, I apply two coats of L.A. Girl - Color Pop Nail Polish to the tips of the nails. Let dry, then pull off the sticker carefully to reveal the design. Next, I use Sally Hansen - Nail Rehab as the base color polish and apply avoiding the white tip area. Lastly, I apply a layer of gel top coat and cure under a UV light. That’s it, your nails are complete! I love this look because it is a classic and compliments everyones skin tone.
