How to (Temporarily) Shrink Your Pores in 1 Hour

nathalieschrans
What you might think are stubborn blackheads that you can’t remove, no matter how religiously you use salicylic acid, are actually sebaceous filaments, which are basically a combination of sebum (your skin’s natural oils), bacteria, dead skin cells, and even the single hair in your hair follicle that have all come together to create that annoying clogged pore. Unfortunately, the size of your pores is determined by your genetics, and they can’t be truly “shrunk,” no matter what a product claims. Although you can only temporarily reduce the appearance of your pores, it’s a pretty simple and extremely satisfying process known as “gritting.” I first learned about this process from Fifty Shades of Snail, whose process is well known in the online skincare community. The process uses three products — a BHA chemical exfoliant, like salicylic acid; a clay mask; and a cleansing oil — and takes about 1 hour max. It’s recommended that you do this in the morning, about once every few days, so this is a great way to indulge in some skincare self-care on the weekends! Below are my favorite products to use for gritting: COSRX - BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
This is one of my favorite chemical exfoliants: it’s affordable, effective, and applies beautifully! I use this for gritting and for chemically exfoliating twice a week. AZTEC SECRET - Indian Healing Clay
I only use this mask for gritting. I personally don’t find it helpful to regularly use clay masks, as I’ve found them to be a little too harsh for me, even with my oily/combination skin. I use raw apple cider vinegar to make my mask, which helps to lower the higher pH of the bentonite in the clay to a more skin-friendly level, which should be around 4-5. Simple Skincare Science has a great post about whether you should use water or raw apple cider vinegar to mix with your clay mask. There are other types of clay masks that might be more suitable for your skin type, like kaolin clay for dry or sensitive skin or French green clay that has more healing properties. This specific clay mask is just the most affordable and easily accessible option! Orgain - Organic Mct Oil Unflavored
Okay, this is where things might get a little weird, but I use MCT oil as my cleansing oil. MCT oil is most commonly used in keto/low-carb diets as a source of energy. I use MCT oil on my skin because it’s extracted from caprylic acid, which does not cause problems for malassezia, or fungal acne. I have a huge bottle of C8 MCT oil from the brand Kiss My Keto that I decanted into a smaller vessel with a pump. The only downside is that because this oil wasn’t made with the intention of being used as a cleansing oil, it doesn’t emulsify when you clean it off your face. I get around that by using a lukewarm, damp towel to gently remove it. If you end up trying the “gritting” process, let me know what you think in the comments!

how does KOREAN skincare compare to AMERICAN?
I’ve been hearing a lot more about K beauty recently, so wanted to delve into how it compares to American skincare! Korea is a country that can be associated as the origin of modern day skincare and their skincare technology is far ahead of that of America. Korea also focuses on natural, powerful and effective ingredients. ingredients if a Korean skincare products main focus is a certain or few products, these will actually be at the top of the ingredients list ! (compared to some USA products where they market a certain ingredient but it’s actually at the bottom of the list). the higher an ingredient is on the list, the higher concentration it is in the product !! Korea also uses new and innovative ingredients in their products, where some simply aren’t even found in the USA! price Korean skincare is quite cheap for the high quality products and ingredients you are buying. a lot of USA products can charge such a high price point for ingredients that aren’t even amazing or ones that are at the bottom of the ingredient list and will have little to no benefit to the skin. accessibility it can be extremely hard to find Korean skincare in the USA, let alone others ! a lot of the ingredients in their products are not supported by the FDA. also when buying Korean skincare, it can take weeks for products to arrive due to customs, shipments etc 🌙 overall 🌙 I have had good experience with both Korean (the few that I have tried so far), and American skincare. the few Korean skincare products I have are peach slices - Snail Rescue Intensive Wash-Off Mask peach slices - Snail Rescue Blemish Busting Toner COSRX - BHA Blackhead Power Liquid when I say that I love these products, I mean I LOVE THESE PRODUCTS !!! these three are the few products that I have seen immediate results with. their ingredients are amazing and they have improved my skin so so much.

My Holy Grail Rotorua Warm Facial Mud Mask
Hey Beauty’s Happy Selfcare Sunday! 😊 I’ve been posting New Zealand 🇳🇿 products lately and thought I’d highlight a warm mud mask. 😉 Wild Ferns Rotorua say, the Mud has natural cleansing, antiseptic, healing and rebalancing properties because of its volcanic origin. Major minerals present in Rotorua Mud include silica, magnesium, calcium, titanium, iron, sulphur, phosphorus, sodium and potassium. Rotorua Mud is excellent for use in regenerative skin care as it has a very strong affinity for moisture. Rotorua's geothermal mud is often used to deeply cleanse, heal and rebalance the skin, which makes it a powerhouse skincare ingredient. Ingredients include: 🧚‍♀️ PEG-8, a clear, colorless liquid that is water-soluble and water-binding (humectant) 🧚‍♀️ Zeolite, absorbent and mattifier 🧚‍♀️ Bentonite, it’s in AZTEC SECRET - Indian Healing Clayand great for absorbing oil 🛢 🧚‍♀️ PEG-75, . It binds, softens and moisturises 🧚‍♀️ Sodium Phosphate, helper ingredient that sets the pH of a cosmetics formula to the right value 🧚‍♀️ Kaolin Clay, it’s absorbent and can suck up excess sebum and gunk from your skin 🧚‍♀️ Ginger Root Oil, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties 🧚‍♀️ Clove Flower Oil is a powerful anti-aging ingredient used in most cosmetics 🧚‍♀️ Cinnamomum Cassia Leaf Oil, Cinnamon Essential Oil is reputed to calm dry skin Apply a layer of your mask to your clean (damp) face and let it sit for the recommended time. Don’t leave your face mask on so long that the product is bone dry. Take the mask off when it begins to dry but still feels a little sticky, any longer and you risk drying out your skin. My thoughts 💭 I have mature, oily/combination skin and I’ve been using the Mask sporadically for over 15 years. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I purchased two new packs from New Zealand 🇳🇿 to use as a consistent mask in my routine. Never know when I’ll be allowed to travel for a holiday so I stocked up. 😁 ✅ On drying, the mud will generate heat, increasing the blood circulation and perspiration that help eliminate toxins and other wastes. This is what excites me! The warm feeling gives a little something extra that’s not common in other Clay masks. ✅ It absorbs excess oils from your skin’s pores, my skin feels smoother after use. ✅ The mud dries on the skin to help promote the regeneration of new cells. ⛔️ Do not allow to dry to a complete white/grey colour Rotorua Mud is my holy grail. I’ve mentioned I grew up bathing in Rotorua thermal pools as a child, I’ve been using the springs and mud as a skincare staple since I was a child. No surprise that I rate it 5 stars and would recommend to any one with oily or combination skin 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 If you’d like a chance to receive a Wild Ferns Rotorua Warm Mud Pack, can you let me know by liking this post ✅ It’s nearly December and I’ll run a NZ product giveaway if peeps are interested. No brand or sponsors are affiliated with my giveaways. 😉 Have a wonderful day! Jade

Indian Healing Clay
I have blackheads on my T-zone, more specifically: forehead, nose, and chin, where I have medium sized visible pores. I bought this product last week, mostly because I was hoping it would help me with my blemishes, but I didn’t expect to like it this much. I used it today for the first time and left it on my face for 20 minutes. After I washed it off with a damp towel, my skin felt so smooth. It clarified my skin and pores and just made my skin feeling so soft to the touch. And my pores look visibly much cleaner as well. My face did turn red for like 10 minutes with just a hint of tingling for a couple minutes but on the back of its container it is said that it’s normal. Honestly it was my first time using it and i saw this much results, so I will definitely use it again.AZTEC SECRET - Indian Healing Clay

SUPERMUD blackheads be GONE!
SUPERMUD blackheads be GONE!
What it is: This mask contains 6-- yes six--exfoliating acids and activated charcoal. It claims to instantly and visibly clear pores and clarify the complexion. Price: $59 full size, $25 mini My thoughts: *Disclaimer: I want to start this review by saying that I would not recommend this mask for sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin and you’d like to try it, please patch test in an area first. This is an intense mask. I do not have sensitive skin. I am able to use a lot of different products on my skin, but this one, although effective, makes my skin red. This is an as-needed or couple of times a month product for me. Now for the details: It unclogs and tightens the pores, and the tightness is noticeable. It leaves the skin feeling soft, clean, and brightened, but I do experience redness. I think this mask is best used when you can moisturize VERY well afterward. This product is great at fighting breakouts because of the acids in it. The texture is very indicative of a mud/clay mask. It is a heavy texture that hardens as it dries. It has a very minty/eucalyptus scent to it, and it has a moderate cooling sensation when it is applied. The biggest downside for this mask for me is the price tag. GlamGlow products are best purchased on sale in my experience.. The plus side is that it isn’t a mask that I would personally use on a weekly basis so it lasts a long time for me. GLAMGLOW - Supermud Charcoal Instant Treatment Mask Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

key ingredients: six super acid blend - the super six acid blend in this mask contains a mixture of both alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mandelic acid, tartaric acid, and pyruvic acid. these acids work together at different speeds on different layers of the skin so you get the benefits of both. they also unclog pores that result in skin problems and imperfections. activated - x charcoal - activated - x charcoal is an extreme absorption carbon that attracts toxins and dirt from deep down in your pores. eucalyptus leaves - eucalyptus leaves steep in the mud and charcoal, delivering the benefits and phytoactive components into the skin and formula. what it claims to do: this clay mask claims to clean and remove any toxins deep down into the deepest and toughest areas from your pores. with the unique formula that this mask holds, it’ll help fight problematic skin/skin imperfections and clogged pores. the super six acid blend helps loosen dead skin cells to exfoliate and sweep them away, leaving fresh and smooth skin behind. this mask is also recommended for acne - prone and oily skin. my experience: i came across this product about a week ago and decided to give it a try because of what it claims to do. this mask is great for clearing out and removing all of the dirt and debris deep inside your pores. it also helps refine the appearance of your pores as well, which makes it more difficult for any bacteria to clog them, resulting in clearer skin. i found that this product works best as a spot treatment overnight, especially for whiteheads since it draws out the pus and toxins from the blemish. it may take time for the active ingredients in the mask to penetrate and give their effect, so a treatment left in place on a blemish for several hours may be of benefit for many products. however, i didn’t notice a difference when applying this to an under the skin blemish, but it did bring it to a head quicker than it would without. this mask is also simple to wash off even if used as a spot treatment, which is left on for way longer than the recommended time. as the mask dries, the super six acid blend allows you to see the active ingredients being drawn towards your pores to remove debris. this is called the pore - matrix. psa: this type of clay mask isn’t recommended for sensitive skin because of the amount of powerful acids it contains, which is why i mostly use it only on my t-zone area because it isn’t sensitive. you also may feel a tingly sensation when applying this mask (it goes away after a few seconds) but this signals your skin is getting used to the different acids and that they’re penetrating into your pores. Great gentle exfoliating mask
Great gentle exfoliating mask
I’m a long-time fan of The Ordinary, so when I saw this new mask in the Deciem store during a recent trip to Toronto, I snapped it up! I‘ve used their acid peel in the past and although I loved the results, it was very strong and stung my skin every time I used it. I was hoping this mask would be a gentler alternative, and thus far it’s lived up to my hopes. This mask claims to target lackluster tone and texture, including large pores and acne blemishes. The product is a creamy consistency, and a little goes a long way—a very thin layer is all you need. The mask dries to a matte finish within a few minutes, and when I wash it off it feels like there are some physical exfoliants—maybe the charcoal? Either way, it doesn’t sting my skin at all, and I think it’s really helped calm down my current breakout. This mask is more expensive than the acid peel, at $12 for 50ml, but it’s still very affordable. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a milder exfoliating mask that targets acne, large pores, and texture. The Ordinary - Salicylic Acid 2% Masque

Yes To Tomatoes Detoxifying Sheet Mask
Yes To Tomatoes Detoxifying Sheet Mask
Hey y’all! This is the first product I’m reviewing for Cherie :) So, this is a Detoxifying Charcoal paper/sheet mask from the brand Yes To Tomatoes. You might’ve heard about this brand elsewhere or have seen it in stores, but if you haven’t it’s a brand that uses 96% natural ingredients in there skincare products (mostly targets acne and blackheads) * This mask is marketed as a detoxifier. It helps purify the skin and works as a natural detoxifier on the face, getting rid of pores and dirt. It also helps keep acne under control. * This product is a paper mask with eye holes and a mouth hole so you can directly put it over your face. There is not a specific texture or consistency except that it feels like paper and it is a little wet. * I have been using this product 2x a week for a month now. I tried it because I like most of Yes To Tomatoes products and wanted to see how well this product would work. So far it has been helping my skin look a little lighter and closing up some pores. The two things I dislike about this product is that it burns a lot for the first 5 minutes, which is probably because it contains ginger, and that it doesn’t really show any direct results after using it for the first few times. * I would recommend this product to others who don’t have sensitive skin, but has patience. * In my opinion, I don’t think that the product is worth the money ($2.99) because the results are not very dramatic. That mask ^ is my last one and I’m thinking of stopping after using it. yesto - Detoxifying Charcoal Paper Mask

Au Revoir Blackheads. You’re not welcome here!
Au Revoir Blackheads. You’re not welcome here!
Let’s talk about one my biggest love affairs with skincare, The Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay mask. Safe to say....a cult favorite. It is an all natural powder clay, made of 100% calcium bentonite; Which is a type of dry, absorbent clay that forms from old volcanic ash. Bentonite clay has been found to remove bodily toxins upon application by absorbing them. Its a vacuum cleaner for things like dirt and oil and hardens on your skin upon a few mins of application. It’s marketed as the worlds most powerful facial with the purpose of deep cleaning the dirtiest of pores and it does not fall short of that. This product has been in my skincare cabinet for a little over 3 years & I wish I had discovered it sooner. When a friend posted it on her IG and swore by it, I ran after work to get it from the Vitamin Shoppe but soon found out I wasn’t the only girl in Manhattan with hopes of flawless skin. Apparently this was when this product had blown up and was sold out everywhere, I ended up finding it at a beauty supply store in Harlem after hours of searching everywhere. Thankfully now, you can find this $9 mask just about anywhere in the city (Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Rite Aid, Vitamin Stores, local grocery stores, amazon, etc) Being the girl that’s always had troublesome skin this mask promised to help get rid of any impurities on my face, Blackheads and Acne being top of my list. You mix the powder with either water or apple cider vinegar 1:1 & get this cream like consistency which you then apply to the face and leave on for 10 minutes. You start feeling your face tingle & tighten w/in a few mins & before u know it u need a straw to take a sip of water. It’s unlike any mask I’ve ever tried. After washing your face is a bit red but followed with moisturizer and it’s like a new face. Any active pimples/redness diminish & blackheads are gone. I use this once a week subject to how much trouble my face is giving me and I have seen this mask change my skin. If you haven’t tried this, what are you waiting for?! 5/5
