Vitamin c is a potent antioxidant, which helps to combat free radical damage to collagen, and it inhibits the production of tyrosinase, lessening melanin production to correct dark spots, uneven tone, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. L-ascorbic acid specifically is a mild chemical exfoliant as well, garnering an extra boost to its tone-correcting and dark spot-lightening powers. Here are my favourite vitamin c products: • *GOOD MOLECULES - Vitamin C Booster Powder : The major appeals of powdered vitamin c are the longer lifespan of the product and the ability to control product concentration. Most vitamin c powders are made equally- I’ve heard good things about the Ordinary’s! I stopped using powder due to getting irritation anytime I accidentally used too much- I’m so sensitive to vitamin c that even a little extra makes my skin red. This would be best for those with oily skin (just add it to your moisturizer, avoiding an extra serum) or for those that want to be able to personally control concentration. • The Ordinary - Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% : My favourite brightening serum. Team up a gentle concentration of l-ascorbic acid with the super effective alpha arbutin and watch hyperpigmentation quickly fade over the weeks. It has a slick texture but soaks in quickly and the smoky scent has only recently become noticeable- I need a new bottle soon, it lasts so long! This would suit those who have sensitive skin, melasma, or PIH/hyperpigmentation issues. • DRUNK ELEPHANT - C-Firma Vitamin C Day Serum : One pump of C-Firma mixed into B-Hydra and Protini was my daytime routine for months and months. It’s so effective at correcting uneven tone! But C-Firma’s potent formula of 15% vitamin c, vitamin e, and ferulic acid is too much strong for my face- my cheeks get red and bumpy when I use it. But I’ve been adding a pump to my Sili body lotion to prevent any dark spots and fade scars, which has been surprisingly effective. I’d mainly recommend this for mature skin that’s already experiencing dark spots or those that have a high tolerance for vitamin c. * gifted
