luxury skincare: one hit, one miss, one meh
I want to preface this post with a few things. 1. I do not support Drunk Elephant. I do not recommend you buy from them. I do not think they are a good company. I don’t want to debate this in the comments, I just want to state my opinions of them up front. 2. “Luxury” is VERY subjective. MY luxury is $40+ for a product. Someone else’s luxury may be $25+. Someone else’s luxury may be $100+. I also don’t want to debate this in the comments. Be sensitive to people of all backgrounds + budgets. 3. I do not think Luxury = good, great, perfect. To me, it usually just means expensive and unobtainable. Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum

One Week Using Differin
Experience: I started using Differin about a week ago to deal with my maskne and dark spots. Ever since I started wearing masks more frequently, my skin has essentially freaked out. It’s super sensitive and dry, especially around my mouth, but I get cystic-like acne along the area where my mask touches my face. I decided that I was going to try Differin as my last resort before going to the dermatologist (cause I’m still nervous about going to doctor’s offices, unless absolutely necessary because of covid). The instructions recommend daily use; however, I began my first week by using it every other day since I’ve had negative experiences/reactions with other active ingredients before. Since then, I’ve begun using it every night. I use this in the evening after cleansing and applying moisturizer and Aquaphor’s healing ointment. Pros: I definitely already see a visible improvement in my skin, especially with the hyperpigmentation that I’ve dealt with. I do use other products that help with brightening, but I’ve been using those products for quite a while and haven’t seen such a drastic improvement until now. Cons: I experienced a few small breakouts around my chin, but they went away pretty quickly. I have yet to experience any significant purging/dryness, but I also didn’t jump immediately to daily use. Other Products I Use + Frequency: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser (everyday, AM/PM) DRUNK ELEPHANT - Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser(everyday to remove sunscreen, PM) The Ordinary - Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA(every other day, alternate between this and the next product/AM) The Ordinary - Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%(every other day, alternate between this and the previous product/AM) DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Cream (everyday, AM/PM) DRUNK ELEPHANT - Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30(everyday, AM) Aquaphor - Healing Ointment Skin Protectant(everyday, use as a lip balm and to protect sensitive areas of my skin when applying Differin)

SHANI DARDEN ROUTINE
I haven’t been using these long enough to speak on the long term benefits, but I wanted to share my first impressions of each: ⭐️ sake toning essence: i really love the idea of a toner and essence in one formula. once i read that this was formulated to help control oil and reduce appearance of pore size, I was SOLD! i have been trying this out in both my AM and PM routine to see what i like better. i think I may stick with using it in the AM for now, as it helps to keep me looking fresh and matifyed throughout the day! ⭐️ texture reform: i decided to go with this one instead of the retinol reform, because it’s a gentler and made for sensitive skin. i have used 2x at night so far and plan to add a day this week. so far I have had zero irritation from this and am excited to see the long term results! ⭐️ cleansing serum: this is super gentle and lathers very nicely. it doesn’t make my skin feel dry and gives my combination skin the perfect amount of hydration! i also feel like it helps calm inflammation and redness. i have used this as a second cleanse after oil cleansing and i have no makeup left behind!
Black-owned brand: Shani Darden
I will be sharing reviews coming up that feature Black-owned brands! The first is the Texture Reform Treatment from Shani Darden. I have normal/dry/combo skin with rosacea. I’m also sensitive and acne prone! SHANI DARDEN SKIN CARE - Texture Reform Gentle Resurfacing Serum Claims: — improve appearance of fine lines, wrinkles — smooth skin — brighten skin Key ingredients: — retinyl palmitate (mild retinoid that supports cell turnover and reduce dark spots, acne) — lactic acid 7% (exfoliates) — aloe vera (soothes) My thoughts: — This is their texture reform treatment, which runs $88 (you can get it online or at Sephora, but you know how I feel about Sephora lol). — It’s great for my sensitive skin, and I use it once a week in my pm routine! You’re supposed to be able to up the usage to 2x a week, but I’m not there yet. — It’s super gentle and doesn’t tingle, or irritate my skin or rosacea. It doesn’t smell great, but most retinol products don’t because, well, it’s not a body cream you know. — This is mostly marketed for fine lines and wrinkles, but I’ve found it’s helped me with my texture and breakouts! — It’s not an immediate glow kind of thing, but something that helps my skin over time. I’m looking forward to seeing more improvement in the future, but dang that price tag gets me. — I really recommend using a heavy moisturizer after this if you have normal or dry skin, as this does tend to make my skin drier than normal.
My Favourite Serums✨
My skin is sensitive, redness-prone, normal-dry depending on the season, and I have some rosacea on my cheeks. These 4 serums have made a big difference in the texture and overall appearance + health of my skin. I’m going to tell you a little bit about each of them below! • SKINCEUTICALS - Serum 10 Aox+ - I’m sure you’ve heard of the cult favourite Skinceuticals vitamin c serum and this version is just as effective, but for sensitive skin. It has a water-like consistency and sinks into the skin right away. I have definitely found that this has helped to brighten and even my skin tone. I really love this vitamin c and would definitely recommend it (even though it’s pricey). • Corpa Flora - Antidote 03 - Redness Relief - this serum has more of an oil-like consistency and a light floral scent to it that I just love. I have found that when I am consistent with this serum it definitely decreases the redness I have in my cheeks due to rosacea. I typically mix a pump of this with a pump of their Corpa Flora - Antidote HB5 Hydration and it’s the perfect hydrating + soothing cocktail! For anyone with sensitive, redness-prone skin like me, this duo is a must have to combat that! • Allies of Skin - Mandelic Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum - I didn’t know what to expect from this serum but it has blown me away. I often have texture on my cheeks and also get hormonal breakouts and this serum does an amazing job at fighting both of them. I always notice a difference in my skin the next morning when I use this at night! My favourite way to use it is to mix a pump of this with a pump of the Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum (if you can’t tell, I love mixing serums to create the perfect skincare concoction). Both of these products are pricey, if you’re going to splurge on one, make it the Mandelic! • CAUDALIE - Vinoperfect Radiance Serum The Brightening Solution - this one is a favourite in the skincare world and for good reason. The overall brightening and tone-correcting effect this serum has is amazing. I love the clean scent it has and the milky, smooth texture. It sinks into the skin quickly and isn’t sticky or tacky. I wouldn’t say this is a must-have compared to the others listed here, but if you’re a product junkie like me it’s definitely worth having in your collection. #CheriePartner
Is Luxury Skincare Worth It? *discussion*
Please add your thoughts in the comments below! I want this to be an open discussion because our skin types and experiences are all so different. To begin: my skin type is combination sensitive dry with an oily nose and chin *and* I am prone to rosacea flare ups. Please keep this in mind when reading... Is luxury skincare worth it? Luxury can mean different things to different people—generally, luxury to me means that it costs over $40-50. It’s not really defined by designer names or anything like that. For me it’s difficult to justify spending tons of money on products without being able to test run them first...because there is no guarantee that the product will work for you and if you have to return it, it can be bad for the environment. Here are my thoughts on some luxury skincare I own: Allies of Skin Triple Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Allies of Skin - Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum First off, I won this in a giveaway—you WILL NOT catch me paying $72 for a skincare product ever. Second, I had heard rave reviews on this for a long time and was excited to try it. However, it just burned my skin and disrupted my skin barrier. It’s a thick serum and the fragrance is SO sickeningly sweet it kind of makes me nauseous. The brand said they are working on a version without fragrance but idk if I would try it since I had such a bad reaction to this one. It contains fruit acids as well which confuses me since it’s supposed to be hydrating. I used it after cleansing but before moisturizing. I can’t recommend this to anyone with sensitive or dry skin. mxt - custom mixed serum for me. #mxt - Custom Mixed Serum[products]#[FiveStars] I won this in a giveaway as well, however I have very different feelings on it. This serum cost was $56 after my customizations, which is expensive for about 1oz of product. HOWEVER, mxt takes you through a skin quiz and custom mixes your products based on your skin concerns. The fact that it is mixed for you makes it worthwhile to me—it’s not like they are just selling the same mixed product to everyone—it’s just for you. Also, the bottle customization is very cute. My custom serum has a light scent (but no fragrance ingredients) but is very lightweight. I use it after cleansing and toning but before moisturizing. I highly recommend trying this brand out at least once. I WILL be repurchasing this once it runs out! BONUS: TOOL - FOREO Products. FOREO - LUNA 3 for Sensitive Skin- I purchased this with a gift card gifted to me—it costs $300 😱. I have yet to try it, but right now I use the FOREO - LUNA fofo on days when I need a little extra exfoliation on my skin without using a scrub or damaging my skin. I absolutely love FOREO products—they are silicone so they are anti-microbial and gentle enough for sensitive skin. Highly recommend to everyone!! What are your thoughts on luxury products? #CheriePartner
Summer Morning Skincare Routine 🌞🌸
My skincare routine this summer is all about simplicity. To avoid over-washing my face I usually skip the face wash in the morning and instead just mist my face with a hydrating facial spray like Herbivore’s Rose Hibiscus spray. Then I follow-up with an antioxidant serum. The one I am using right now is Glossier’s Super Glow! Finally I apply a light moisturizer. I am using one by Origin right now because I have not found a lightweight moisturizer that I’m crazy about. I finish off by applying SPF with SuperGoop’s Daily Screen moisturizer to protect my skin from the sun. And voila!

Wrecked barrier? Ceramides to the rescue!
I think we’ve all been there.... your skin feels dry and tight. It has so much redness and irritation that every product stings your skin. Welcome to an unhappy moisture barrier. But, CERAMIDES TO THE RESCUE! Which product would be best for introducing this miracle ingredient into your skin? The thick and creamy Drunk elephant Lala retro or Krave Beauty’s great barrier relief serum? Keep reading to find out. DE Lala retro claims to be: a rescue cream infused with six rare African oils and a ceramide complex for intense moisture and replenishing barrier support. Krave Beauty GBR: claims to be a skin soothing serum that restores your damaged skin barrier while evening out your complexion. As a gal with super dry and dehydrated, sensitive skin, it is SUPER easy for me to push my skin to the limit and wreck my barrier. I honestly love to keep both of these in my stash, but have been reaching for GBR by Krave much more often. When your skin just cannot retain moisture and is so irritated, I love to opt for the soothing serum. It’s very thin texture soaks right into my skin instead of staying as a greasy film on top of the skin. It also contains olive oil, which is an occlusive, to really lock in the moisture. I will opt for Lala retro, which is a beautiful thick moisturizer, as upkeep and/or when my moisture barrier is finally on the uprise. I believe that both of these have amazing ingredients that will not irritate your skin further. I think that Lala retro may be a bit heavy for oily skin types, but for the most part both of these should work great for all skin types. I highly recommend you keep these in your stash if you use actives, because they are easy to overdo! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream Krave - Great Barrier Relief

All day color correct and & hydration galore!
Occasionally, my skin gets super sensitive and irritated. It happens mostly when I’m stressed and don’t get enough sleep. My face becomes pimple central. I’m talking big huge red spots all over my face. I have to use my super full coverage and concealers if I want to go out... and I hated doing so over just a simple moisturizer/primer... then I found this powerful combo that actually lets me feel protected. Dr. Jart+ - Cicapair Re-Cover The Cicapair Re-Cover is a super thick cream that color corrects and soothes irritated and sensitive skin. I found that it’s thick consistency didn’t work well when using it alone. I couldn’t blend it into my skin very well. Then I thought to mix it with a moisturizer but not just any.... DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream I LOVE Drunk Elephant. I use a few of their products and have only good things to say about their skincare. This moisturizer is my MUST HAVE... especially when my skin freaks out. It has a whipped texture.. almost like a soufflé. I feel 100% moisturized when I apply it. Not only that- it is supposed to act as a barrier for your skin and I truly feel that it does just that. It provides what seems to be an impenetrable layer defending my skin from environmental factors and preventing the makeup from clogging my pores. When I combine the Cicapair Re-cover with the Lala Retro Whipped Moisturizer, I get the most perfect result. The angry red spots are soothed and color corrected and my face has a barrier layer, allowing me to feel okay about using full coverage makeup!

Nighttime Routine 🌙🖤
I figured I would share with you all what I used last night during my skincare routine: (Not pictured) - I had washed my face with Holifrog’s Shasta cleanser which is a gentle AHA refining acid wash. Then I applied a few drops of the new E-Rase Milki Micellar Water on a cotton square (my favorite are the 100% cotton squares from Shiseido) and used that to not only remove all the stubborn dirt & debris from my skin that was left behind while cleansing, but I also find Milki to be a great refresher / soothing for the skin. Best part? There is no rinsing or wiping off required! Then I created a PM smoothie using some of my favorite Drunk Elephant products - a generous dollop of Lala Retro Whipped Cream, 2 pumps of B-Hydra, a generous pea size of A-Passioni (retinol cream), and two drops of Virgin Marula Oil. Also not pictured, I did finish off by using Drunk Elephant’s C-Tango for the eyes! Typically I use C-Tango as a daytime eye cream, but it also feels great at night if it’s been chilled in my skincare fridge! Let me know if you love / use any of these products in YOUR routine! 💚 DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream DRUNK ELEPHANT - E-Rase Milki Micellar Water DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni Retinol Cream DRUNK ELEPHANT - Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil

Ingredient Breakdown: Ceramides
Ceramides are a lipid that already exist in the strateum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. In fact, your skin is made up of around 50% ceramides! Ceramides hold together skin cells, preventing moisture loss and retaining firmness. UV damage and pollution destroy the number and quality of the ceramides in your skin, leading to loss of the supple feeling of skin, decreased visible smoothness, as well as increasing the likelihood of sensitivity and irritation. I love using ceramides to address both my sensitivity issues (hey eczema fam!) and for youth-promotion. For sensitivity, it shouldn’t take long to feel and see results like reduced redness and increased smoothness, but aging skin should expect a wait time of months for fine line and firmness improvement. I have combination skin, so I love these three products for adding ceramides to my routine without being too heavy for my oily forehead and nose, but offering the hydration my dry cheeks and eye areas need! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream has been my favourite moisturizer throughout my super oily pre-niacinamide days and my super dry eczema flare-ups. It is fluffy and easily absorbed, but layers easily with extra hydrating and moisturizing serums. PAULA'S CHOICE - Omega + Complex Serum should be in every sensitive, aging, or dry skin routine. It is light but packs a serious moisturizing and soothing punch. I also recommend it to oily/combination folks when using exfoliants or retinol, to help reduce the likelihood of irritation! PAULA'S CHOICE - Hyaluronic Acid Booster is amazing. Everyone should try this, legitimately. Actual hyaluronic acid plus popular sodium hyaluronate offer light, soothing hydration while cholesterol and ceramide help to retain that hydration without oiliness. It’s perfect for treating skin issues like sensitivity, dehydration, and a damaged skin barrier from overexfoliation or retinol.
