Skincare Alphabet - F is for Ferulic Acid

avatar
fkn_winemixer
Yay! Finally time for one of my favorite and, to me, must have ingredients: Ferulic Acid! Ferulic acid is an antioxidant found in the cell walls of certain plants (rice, oats, apples seeds, etc) and serves the purpose of protection and preservation of the cell. This acts as other antioxidants do, slowing down the aging process and by reducing free radical damage on the skin. It has also been shown to greatly improve akin that has already experience damage from the sun and environmental conditions. This is an amazing ingredient of you are looking to combat signs of aging early, and in my opinion, the sooner you start the better. Ferulic acid is often paired with other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E to enhance their effects and provide more stability to unstable ingredients, like vitamin C. My favorite products that include Ferulic acid: Dr Dennis Gross - Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum
MAELOVE - Glow Maker
SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum

Treating and Preventing Hyperpigmentation
When it comes to hyperpigmentation, your SPF is the most important step in your skincare routine. But what else can you be doing to prevent dark spots from forming or heal ones that you are already experiencing? Enter my tried and true hyperpigmentation protocol: Alpha Arbutin, Vitamin C, Glycolic Acid, and Retinol. The combination of these products not only heals existing spots, but prevent new ones from forming. Prevent: Vitamin C serum is a powerful antioxidant that not only combats signs of aging, it actually improves the efficacy of SPF. Because of this, Vitamin C should be a key part of your daily morning routine. SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum Prevent + Heal: The effects of Vitamin C are also bolstered by the next ingredient in my hyperpigmentation protocol: Alpha Arbutin. AA disrupts the enzymes in our cells that cause melanin production meaning it prevents dark spots from forming when skin is exposed to UV light. When used in conjunction with Vitamin C in your AM routine, this effect is boosted. Your hyperpigmentation will fade as a result of cell turnover without melanin production in new cells. The Ordinary - Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA But Alpha Arbutin also works well in your PM routine following the use of an AHA exfoliant, which boosts its absorption into the skin for further protection. And that leads me to the next part of the protocol… Heal: Healing hyperpigmentation relies on cell turnover. There are two ingredients that I rely on to achieve this. First is Glycolic acid, an AHA. As mentioned before, following an AHA with Alpha Arbutin will enhance the absorption and effects of the Alpha Arbutin. But Glycolic Acid is also a very effective exfoliant. Because it’s water soluble, it works on the surface of the skin to gently exfoliate while also having a moisturizing effect. L'ORÉAL - Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum The second product for healing I rely on is retinol. Like Alpha Arbutin, retinol has the specific ability to disrupt melanin production which makes it another key player in this protocol. But it also boosts collagen production in the skin, contributing to anti-aging. It’s a common misconception that retinol is an exfoliant due to its ability to irritate skin and cause flaking for some people. But retinol is actually a powerful antioxidant and skin restoring ingredient. SKINCEUTICALS - Retinol 0.5 Retinol Night Cream It is true that for most people combining and AHA with retinol will cause irritation. I like to alternate using glycolic acid and retinol every other evening with a day off in between. And that’s it! The combination of these products in a consistent routine helped me heal severe hyperpigmentation within a month. In addition to my SPF, it has also prevented new spots from forming while combatting signs of aging.

Top 3 Vitamin C Serums of 2020
Many of my patients are looking for the perfect routine to prevent the signs of ageing. Uneven skin tone is one of the first signs to show up and vitamin C is one of the most lauded ingredients to tackle it. It’s a strong antioxidant and also helps to normalize the process of melanin production. However, ascorbic acid, the active form of vitamin C, is notoriously unstable and oxidizes quickly. With so many products on the market, it’s hard to know which one to choose. Here are my top picks for vitamin C SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum Yes, the price tag may repel most of you, but this serum is truly the OG. This formula is super stable due to its blend of vitamin E and ferulic acid to help stabilize the 15% vitamin C. Skinceuticals’s own studies also showed that these three ingredients are more than the sum of their parts – this serum has higher antioxidant capacity than if you were using any of the 3 star ingredients alone. That makes it the perfect daytime serum to help augment your sunscreen and prevent free radical damage. This is truly one of my favorite products of all time, due in no small part to both its formula and cosmetic elegance – when I wear this I feel like my skin is glowing from within. NATURIUM - Vitamin C Complex Serum This was a new discovery for me this year after being gifted by the brand. The innovative formula combines encapsulated L-ascorbic acid with other vitamin C derivatives and plant extracts. It is also stabilized with gold and glutathione. The cosmetic elegance/finish on the skin is glowy without being too shiny. It plays well with other products and, with a price tag of only $20, it’s a great value. This product feels EXPENSIVE! The Ordinary - Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% This product is one of my favorite finds for hyperpigmentation this year. It has a super simple formula of only 3 ingredients – the two actives dispersed in propanediol. Using multiple agents that address the different steps of melanin synthesis is ideal for treating or preventing hyperpigmentation. Both ascorbic acid and alpha arbutin inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin. Arbutin has the added benefit of putting a brake on the maturation of melanosomes – the cellular vehicles for melanin. It burns a little bit on application but did not irritate my sensitive skin. At $10, it’s a bargain! #cheriepartner

Trying new things...
Soooooo here we go- Previously on my face (in tv show announcer voice) So I started out a few years ago trying out different eye serums & not really loving any but then I started using Dr Dennis Gross - Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum & it is magical for dark circles!! I am fair skinned (like vampire) so my skin under my eyes is thin & allows the pigmentation underneath show thru a bit easier than most.... Therefore this was a lifesaver for my under eye dark circles & dipping my toe into the water for eye serums....my problem with this magical serum? It didn’t really do anything for my fine lines under my eyes.... 😩 So in strolls SHISEIDO - Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream meh...super soft & moisturizing but not knocking me out of the park with my fine lines or really my dark circles......at all....combine this with dr dennis gross & my eyes are hydrated & then dark circles are gone but....moving on So then I tried TATCHA - The Silk Peony Melting Eye Cream & this stuff helps with the dark circles under my eyes & feels absolutely amazing (disclaimer-if you have sensitive skin do not mix this bad boy with dr dennis gross-that combo dried out my eyes so bad it was painful.....tho I learned that the only product that you can use on your skin that is USUALLY SAFE when needing to hydrate is plain ol’ vasoline-helped me on multiple occasions with skin problems) but same issues with my fine lines....ugh Added in TATCHA - THE SERUM STICK before I put on the peony silk eye cream & still....meh.... So-whilst looking for a clean option for an eye serum (realizing it’s prolly a good idea to be good to my skin now in my 20s) I stumbled across Drunk elephant & tonight I’m finally trying one of their eye serums!! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Shaba Complex Firming Eye Serum First impressions? Not a big fan of the smell... Jeeze! the pump puts out enough product for 3 people’s eyes But after it absorbed a bit....I feel the tightening I’m not dried out & I have hopes....not exactly high hopes but hopes.... We shall see!!

My Recent empties for my Acne Prone Skin🤩
I wrote previous on my page about how I have struggled with hormonal acne breakouts since the birth of my two children. It’s been an on-going battle for the past 9 years to fix and save my skin. I feel like I have found some great products over the past 3 months and I wanted to share with you some of my recent #emties!!!! 🤩 MAELOVE - Glow Maker MaeLove is a Indy brand that I became obsessed with a few moths ago after watching YouTuber Liah Yoo (shout out💁🏻‍♀️) review them. Glow maker is by far my favorite Vitamin C serum. I use this in the morning after my toner and it brightens my skin and absorbs quickly with out leaving that sticky feel *that I hate *🙅🏻‍♀️ which a lot of other vitamin C’s that I have tried in the past leave behind. The price point is not bad either and the shipping is eco conscious and plastic free which I love. 💕 MAELOVE - NIA 10 Calming Serum Ahhhhh, this hurts my heart so bad because I love most of MaeLove’s products, but this has to be my least favorite out of the brand. I didn’t see much benefit from this product and have found other niacinamides that I like much better.. like Paula’s Choice clinical and naturium. Also, just because it didn’t work for my skin doesn’t mean that it won’t work for yours. LA ROCHE-POSAY - Effaclar Adapalene Gel .01% Topical Retinoid Acne Treatment AGAINNNNN, La Roche Posay hits it out of the park for me. This retinoid treatment, which you use to need a prescription for, helped to heal my stubborn acne bumps and blackheads. It’s also at a pretty reasonable price point and you can pick it up at certain drugstores. It’s a gel consistency and I use it as a spot treatment on my breakouts. I will DEFINITELY be repurchasing this. primera - Black Seed Cold-Brew Serum I highly recommend this product as well. It goes on smooth and absorbs right in to the skin. I usually use this at night.. because I try to minimize the amount of serums I use in the morning. The reason I gave it 4 instead of five stars is because the price point. I found another serum I’m testing out right now that is slight cheaper that I will posting about soon. LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Ultra Night Cream for Sensitive Skin This has to be my favorite product out of the bunch! The creamy consistency goes on my skin effortlessly. I put this on last after my Serums and I wake up to baby smooth skin. I don’t know what it is about this brand but just about every product I have purchased from them works really well with my dry acne prone skin.

Beauty-Stat Buys: Yay/Nay
BeautyStat COSMETICS - Universal C Skin Refiner I got this to replace my skinceuticals CE Ferulic acid, and I wouldn’t call it a dupe but it is a good product. It comes out as a cream-like substance in a sealed pump bottle so you don’t inadvertently oxidize the product every time you use it (like the dropper in CE ferulic). Although the packaging preserves the product, it sacrifices the pleasant water-like texture with application. I say “cream-like” because it looks like a cream but it doesn’t feel like a cream. It feels more like a mousse. When you spread it on your skin it feels quite matte with out moisturization properties and absorbs readily. However, It definitely feels like you’re putting something on your face, unlike the feeling I get with CE ferulic which is basically when two become one 🎵. Beauty stat does sting a bit, probably because of the high concentration of vitamin c. Because of this, I generally use it at night to avoid sensitization. It feels like it could dry out your skin without a good moisturizer on top. Overall it’s a good product, but I think I’m going to try MAELOVE - Glow Makernext in an effort to find a good CE ferulic dupe. Beauty stat definitely lightens and brightens my skin, but I want to wear vitamin c during the day for the protective antioxidant qualities and save my PM routine for retinol and collagen building post microneedling. Who knows, I might circle back around to it in the future 🤷🏻‍♀️ BeautyStat COSMETICS - Universal Moisture Essence This is the first time I have tried squalane so I can’t compare this to any other products of the type. I got it on sale and had heard so much about the benefits of the molecule but I’m struggling to find it’s place in my routine. I’ve been using it, when necessary, to seal in moisture at night: it is lighter than an oil such as Marula or Jojoba. But I don’t really have a need for that function because the viscosity of the oil on top of my nightly routine doesn’t matter. When worn alone, it does not soak into my skin without being shiny, and I guess that’s what I was hoping for. It does seem to be non-comedogenic and not clog pores. Perhaps this isn’t a good fit for my personal needs because I have combo skin, maybe if you have dry sensitive skin OR are looking for a simple oil to seal your moisturizer in, this could work. Have you tried either of these products? If so, what’s your experience? Do you have any recommendations regarding their use? Drop me a line bc I love to hear what everyone else thinks and/or discover new ways to use products 💋

Summer Days “CC Me Serum” ✨
Summer Days “CC Me Serum” ✨
✨What is it? •Summer Days SUMMER FRIDAYS - CC Me Vitamin C Serum is a Vitamin C Serum. It is targeted for Combination, oily, dry, normal, and sensitive skin. It has a thin gel feeling leaving your skin soft and smooth. It helps with brightening your skin and keeping it hydrated. Making your skin very even. It delivers instant brightness and makes little spots disappear. •Packed with Squalane to lock-in moisture for that extra glow and to protect against free radicals, along with clinically-proven peptides to promote youthful looking skin (as said on the website) which I find extremely true! ✨How to use: •After you have cleansed your skin, make sure that your skin is completely dry, afterwards apply your serum. It is a pump lid, not a squeeze so you can easily pump it on your face where you would like it. After you apply it - apply your moisturizer 🧴. ✨It is... Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Paraben Free, Brightening, Hydrating, and Anti-aging. I highly recommend this product. It has done everything it says! check out my page for more!!

CULT-FAVORITE ANTIOXIDANT SERUM
CULT-FAVORITE ANTIOXIDANT SERUM
SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum This serum contains Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Ferulic acid and L-ascorbic acid. It’s a powerful combination of antioxidants that will protect your skin from radical damage. This product has a pretty interesting texture that reminds me of a super lightweight oil- I definitely notice a sheen on my skin after application! The color is a translucent pale orange that gradually darkens over time. It’s my first ever vitamin C serum but I’m almost done with my first bottle and already have a back up ready! I love the glow and brightening effect it gives my skin. I use it every morning and am planning to start using it at night right before retinol to boost the effects of retinol (according to derm dr. Shereene Idriss)! One bottle lasts about 4 months for me so although it’s extremely expensive for a serum, a little goes a long way! So to me, it’s worth it. I personally trust the technology and the chemists behind SkinCeuticals so I understand why their prices can be so high. This is a cult-favorite product of many beauty editors, dermatologists and personal friends of mine- if you are financially able to try it, I would say go for it!

Quality Skincare Doesn’t Have to Break Bank 💸
Quality Skincare Doesn’t Have to Break Bank 💸
I’m always on the hunt for affordable & accessible skincare so I was excited when No7 gifted me their ✨NEW✨ Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex. I don’t have a lot of experience with retinol creams from other brands - prior to trying this out, I have only consistently used Drunk Elephant’s A-Passioni, which I love - but it can be $$$! No7’s Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex is a night concentrate with 5 in 1 capabilities: helps with lines appear smoother, skin tone appears more even, skin appears firmer & more lifted, skin appears brighter & more radiant, and diminishes the appearance of pores & texture. The 0.3% pure retinol included in this formula reboots the skin, allowing you to achieve younger, healthier looking skin. No7 also included their own technology by incorporating Matrixyl 3000 Plus which helps renew skin by kickstarting its natural repair process. This retinol concentrate is an anti-aging dream! The retinol optimiser found in this formula is a slow-release oil encapsulation system that delivers throughout the night, as well as retinol soother to help calm the skin. 🌙 As always, listen to your skin - if you have sensitive skin, be sure to test on a small portion of your skin first to ensure there are no negative reactions / side effects. And most importantly, wear SPF! Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UV radiation so wearing a good SPF, as you should always, is crucial. 🖤 You can find this product directly on No7’s website for $36.99, or at Ulta, Walgreens for $39.99, or Target for $34.99. i’ve been testing the farmacy
i’ve been testing the farmacy very cherry serum for a couple weeks now and i’m so impressed. the serum isn’t super sticky like a lot of vitamin c serums and it seriously smells out of this world. i traveled like CRAZY this week and my skin has been behaving (so far) which i think really speaks to the routine i currently have in place. my current routine is: 🍒farmacy green clean (they’re coming out with a very cherry version which i NEED) 🍒knours cleanser 🍒deciem pore flush 🍒drbarbarasturm hyaluronic acid 🍒farmacy very cherry (am) or herbivore bakuchiol (pm) 🍒drunkelephant protini or knours skin meditation gel 🍒meetblume meltdown 🍒sbaek globe trotter overall, it’s been a struggle to find a vitamin c serum i like and that works. i can definitely say that farmacy very cherry is my favorite vitamin c serum i’ve found! have you tried yet? definitely pick this up during the sephora sale and save dat coin!!

Let’s Talk Vitamin C 🍊🍊🍊
Let’s Talk Vitamin C 🍊🍊🍊
What is it: A type of ascorbic acid that is extremely high in antioxidants. What does it do: helps to even out skin tone and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can also shield skin from environmental stressors. SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum How I use it: I apply it as a serum every morning before following up with moisturizer and sunscreen. I love this vitamin C serum so much because it’s such a powerful antioxidant that helps to brighten my skin tone by improving the look of post-blemish marks. I’ve seen such a big visual difference in my skin in terms of discoloration and tone. I highly recommend it to everyone!

The Truth on the truth serum 🍊
The Truth on the truth serum 🍊
The Truth Serum 🕵️ Firstly, the name is phenomenal, I mean it sounds like it came straight out of a detective movie, which is my favorite type of movie. Secondly, this smells like an orange dreamsickle which makes the application of this even more enjoyable without irritating me in any way, which is impressive. Some fun ingredients it contains are collagen, green tea extract, aloe juice and a true-c complex which is basically different forms of vitamin C. Overall, I really enjoy this product, I'm not exactly sure why, because I don't see any noticeable effects, but I don't see anything bad either. I wouldn't say that this is a strong vitamin C, so I like using this in the daytime as some antioxidant protection 🌞 This product has apparently gotten such great reviews online that my boyfriend even sent me an article about it, without knowing I had it 😅 always on top of my skincare game 🕵️
