Skincare Alphabet - H is for Hyaluronic Acid
If you haven’t heard of Hyaluronic Acid, you must be living under a rock (no offense to any starfish out there that might be reading this.) Hyaluronic Acid or HA has been all over the skincare world for quite sometime now and you can find this incorporated into almost every imaginable type of skincare product as well as makeup products like foundation and lipstick. HA is naturally occurring in your skin, joints, eyes, etc. and acts somewhat like a sponge. It holds water on your face to not only hydrate but keep it looking plump and fresh. It is a humectant which hydrates by drawing moisture into it from outside sources. Although it is an amazing ingredient, use with caution. Applying HA in the right order, after toner and essence but before moisturizer and oils, will make the HA and it’s effects on your skin last longer. This is especially important in dry, less humid environments. HA draws water and moisture from ANYWHERE including your skin. I live in Southern California where it is beautiful, but can also quite arid. On less humid days, I spray Avène - Thermal Spring Water Spray on before I add HA so it grabs the water on the surface of my skin, instead of drawing from within my skin, and then seal it off with an emollient. I like to mix HA into my foundation on days I wants lighter coverage or more of a dewy look, especially when I’m experiencing post retinol flaking and dryness. How do you use your HA?

Mellow Yellow 🟡
I recently bumped up my retinol concentration from .5 to the strong arm of 1.0. My skin adapted quite well to the prior of the two. I used an entire tube and not once experienced any irritation, flaking, peeling, etc. I was ready for a step up. Wrong!!!! 🥴 The next level is real! I could barely use it once every two weeks without experiencing a ridiculous amount of flaking and peeling for days after my retinol night. I didn’t even want to put makeup on as it just clung to the flakes and dried skin. I looked like a snake (Slytherin is my HP house after all 🐍). It took a bit of experimenting, but I’ve been able to mellow out the flaking to where I am now using retinol once per week (baby steps here people) and the flaking is only a couple of days. Besides using a heavy emollient moisturizer over the retinol, not to mention modifying the amount of retinol to about a pea size, I incorporated these two products immediately after retinol and for a few days afterwards. YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask - this is an amazing hydrating mask that can be used as a 20 minute mask or an overnight mask. This mask boasts hyaluronic acid, squalene, sunflower seed oil, and vitamin C and E. I use this every other night the week after retinol. It also smells delicious so remember not to eat it! e.l.f. - All the Feels Facial Oil - this oil. Ooooooh this oil!!! I have comb/oily skin and have always been fearful of face oils, even though I know all about the benefits. I was introduced to this through a good friend of mine and my life and skin has been grateful. Facial oils are great for sealing in moisture, particularly at night when me experience transepidermal water loss. It’s never too greasy and also feels dry when you put it on, but when I wake up in the morning I feel hydrated and plump. Plus you can’t beat the price point. Do you have any post retinol tricks? I’d love to hear them!

What I Purchased During Sephora’s Holiday Sale
The most wonderful time of the year brings about Sephora’s Holiday Sale. For anyone who may not know about it, it’s just like the Sephora spring sale where depending on your BeautyInsider status, you get a certain percentage off of anything you buy (there are a few exceptions). Rouge status gets 20% off and early access 10/30 VIB status gets 15% off and early access 11/3 Insider status gets 10% off and regular access 11/5 Here’s what I picked this holiday season: FENTY BEAUTY - Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer - finally decided to try this based on the hype and man o man this did not disappoint! It smells stupid good, has a buttery consistency and is not the least bit sticky, and the colors are just gorgeous. I picked up Fenty Glow and loved it so much that I went back and got the color Fu$$y too! Buy it! Needless to say I just had to buy the new Fenty Glossy Posse Holoidaze edition which is four new mini gloss bombs. Did I tell you I have a problem with this gloss? I’m addicted. HOURGLASS - Ambient Lighting Powder - I’ve wanted to try this for a while and so far so good. They are very subtle powders that are finely milled and have the slightest amount of reflecting particles in it. I like to use this on “less is more” make-up days: BB cream and this powder, paired with a brow gel and lip balm and BOOM - I woke up like this 🎶 HOURGLASS - Veil Translucent Setting Powder - I’ve been in the market for a new setting powder for quite sometime. I had been using the Coty Airspun and really only using it to set my under eye concealer, but aside from the fact that there is talc in (trying to cut that out as much as possible) I found that it was not fine enough and would cake in my creases. This is so light and soft and works well for a light touch-up during the day. HOURGLASS - Arch Brow Shaping Gel- I haven’t actually used this, but I have high hopes based on reviews. My brows are really the most important part of my “getting ready” routine, but sometimes I don’t want to do a fully filled in brow and I want something easy and not as time consuming (I extremely detailed with my brows). I’ll do an update on this when I post my brow products!! Of course I picked up a few refills of some tried and true products that I constantly repurchase (coming soon to a Cherie post near you). belif - Eye Bomb Gwp the best hydrating eye cream that I have ever tried. ANASTASIA Beverly Hills - Brow Wiz Mechanical Brow Pencil - my favorite brow product of all time. FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Cream - my winter moisturizer. What did you buy with your discount?! Let me know 😻

Skincare Alphabet - G is for Glycerin
Ahhh glycerin, a dry gal’s best friend. You’ll rarely run across any moisturizing and hydrating products that do not contain this slept on ingredient, and for good reason: It works! Glycerin is a humectant that, much like HA, attracts moisture to the upper layer of the skin and helps prevent scaling and dryness by protecting the Skin’s natural barrier against the elements (I’m looking at you winter wind and Santa Anas). Like HA though, it can, if not used properly, pull hydration from the deeper layers of skin, up to the outer layers. This is why it’s combined w/ other ingredients, like exclusive emollients, that reduce the risk of moisture loss or used in more humid climates where it can draw water from the environment. Glycerin is naturally found in most, if not all, natural fat cells (ppl, plants, animals) and can also be synthetically produced. With winter on the way (if you don’t live in Southern California of Florida it might have already hit) hydration is key. Time to start swapping out those lighter summer moisturizers and hydrators for thicker, heavy duty creams. Look for ones that combine multiple ingredients, glycerin being one of them. BTW Happy Halloween 🎃

Skincare Alphabet - F is for Ferulic Acid
Yay! Finally time for one of my favorite and, to me, must have ingredients: Ferulic Acid! Ferulic acid is an antioxidant found in the cell walls of certain plants (rice, oats, apples seeds, etc) and serves the purpose of protection and preservation of the cell. This acts as other antioxidants do, slowing down the aging process and by reducing free radical damage on the skin. It has also been shown to greatly improve skin that has already experience damage from the sun and environmental conditions. This is an amazing ingredient if you are looking to combat signs of aging early, and in my opinion, the sooner you start the better. Ferulic acid is often paired with other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E to enhance their effects and provide more stability to unstable ingredients, like vitamin C. My favorite products that include Ferulic acid: Dr Dennis Gross - Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum MAELOVE - Glow Maker SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum

Becca: The ULTIMATE Your Skin But Better Makeup
I didn’t get the hype around Becca products. Then my mom gifted me the Becca Made with Love by Khloe Face Palette. A problem I had with other blushes was that some are too pigmented. And others were too matte, which ended up emphasizing my skin texture instead of blending into it. This palette solves both those problems. In this Before and After, I applied all shades in the palette to my cheeks and nose. 🌺 I used Koko Bronze under my cheekbone, swirled Fierce (a pinky gold) on my apples, and built Glow Up (gold blush) on my cheekbones. In pictures, it doesn’t look like a dramatic difference. But in real life, it ties a whole makeup look together. This palette basically blends itself. I could sweep it on in 5 seconds and be ready to move onto eyeshadow. That makes it ideal for someone just getting into makeup who wants something easy and natural-looking to work with. I take this palette with me every time I travel. Since the colors are warm neutrals, it’s easy to match them with almost anything I bring. And, if I really want to save space, I use it for eyeshadow. It doesn’t feel like a pigmented palette, but a pinch of color that just makes you look healthy and awake. This specific product is not available through most retailers anymore. But since trying it, I’ve swatched and toyed with other Becca highlighters, bronzers, and blushes. The formula and colors feel just as blendable and smooth as this one. So if you want a face palette that’s easy to use and looks natural, look no further than Becca’s lineup.

An anti-aging product that actually worked
PAULA'S CHOICE - 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment Paula’s Choice is one of my favorite science-backed skincare brands. I tried its 0.3% retinol and 2% bakuchiol treatment cream. This cream also has pepitides that also targets wrinkles and loose skin. According to the brand, bakichiol stabilizes retinol and makes this anti-aging ingredient to last longer on the skin and work more efficiently. So this formula is designed to fight against sign of aging and improve enlarged pores. The cream looks light yellowish and feels silky on the skin. It’s not greasy at all. It’s blendable and wearable. My skin has some large pores on and around the nose. I also have deep smile lines around the mouth. After using this treatment for about 3 weeks, my skin felt tighter and firmer. The lines were already slightly improved. The pores were almost gone, not visible. How to use: I use it 2-3 times a week. The frequency can be increased after the first few weeks when needed. I apply a few pea sizes on my face and neck. Gently massage the cream into the skin until it’s totally absorbed and then apply moisturizer and SPF. I sometimes mix it with my moisturizer. #cheriepartner
PAULA'S CHOICE-0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment
MAKE WAY FOR BAKUCHIOL! YOU WON'T REGRET IT 🤯
LET'S GET INTO IT! FYI THIS IS A LITTLE LONG FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. What is retinol in the first place.... there are several different kinds of retinoids (let me know if you want to see a post on them!) but all are derivatives of Vitamin A! Some can be purchased over the counter or can only be recieved by perscription. Anyway let's talk about the fun stuff, the benefits! RETINOL is known for the following: stimulating collagen production increasing cell turnover minimizing fine lines/wrinkles balancing skin tone & texture You can see why it's a skincare gold-standard. All of these are great results but RETINOL does have possible side effects — dryness, redness, irritation & overall sensitivity. To be 100% clear, these things happen as the skin purges or pushes out what it needs to as the skin cells begin to turn over! If you're using retinol I would EXPECT these effects at first before any major results. Here's a product example: The Ordinary - Retinol 0.5% in Squalane The Ordinary has two lines including Retinol & they recommend the Granactive line to prevent skin irritation. This serum is formulated with squalane which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties while also working to improve the skin on a cellular level. I included this one to express safe usage. Which would include SPF (which you should always wear) & application at night. Lastly, if using retinol research what Acids (hyaluronic, glycolic, lactic, etc.) are safe for use with your specific product. Patch testing is recommended when using stronger retinoids like this! — So now what if I told you, you can experience the wonderful anti-again benefits of RETINOL without its adverse side effects! Okay so that's now Bakuchiol comes in..... it is a plant-derived alternative to Retinol also it is safe to use during pregnancy. In many studies of Bakuchiol vs. Retinol creams those who used Retinol experienced more skin-scaling & sensitivity than those using Bakuchiol. Personally, I have used many different Bakuchiol serums & have yet to see a negative turn in my skin. As I said before the purging is NECESSARY & not a sign of any wrongdoing. But with this serum I am seeing everything I need to so I know I will be coming back to it. ACURE - Radically Rejuvenating Dual Phase Bakuchiol Serum This product is to be SHAKEN! It contains two layers, before mixing, their site describes the top layer as an "antioxidant rich essence" & the bottom layer as a "moisturizing serum blend". Formulated eggplant & turmeric for anti-inflammatory plus antioxidant benefits! I love this because it's a soothing yet the long term effects are even better. I always say skincare is constantly growing & changing so if you suffer with skin sensitivity or are scared to dive into a Retinol based product: RESEARCH BAKUCHIOL! MY BEST ADVICE.... do your OWN research, everyone's skin is different like a snowflake, so do what's best for you!

Finally, I Found The RIGHT Moisturizers For My Skin😏
I have combination-oily, sensitive, acne-prone skin and after several years of research and experimenting, I finally found some moisturizers and facial creams suitable for my skin. I look for skincare products that are antioxidant, control acne breakouts, repair the skin barrier, improve skin immunity, correct skin tone, and remove acne marks. 1) TOPIX - Replenix Restorative Nighttime Bio-Therapy Main features: It offers antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and calming effects, and helps in skin restoration and stabilization. Main ingredients: Green tea polyphenols are beneficial soothing and anti-inflammatory agents, while 3% niacinamide helps to improve the skin barrier. This is a good enough reason for people with combination-oily, acne-prone skin to choose this product. My irregular daily routine and diet triggers acne breakouts easily and I can never refrain from popping my acne, so I really can't do without anti-inflammatory and restoration skincare. It also contains resveratol and caffeine which are both great at correcting skin tone. It has a smooth texture and it leaves your skin with a matte finish. Attention: Use it after your toner and serum are fully absorbed by gently patting it onto the skin to prevent it from balling up. 2) elta md SKINCARE - AM Therapy Facial Moisturizer Main features: It is moisturizing, offers shine control, corrects skin tone, and reduces acne marks. It's really suitable for combination-oily and sensitive skin. Its main ingredient, nicotinamide, helps in reducing acne scars and correcting skin tone while white willow bark extract leaves the skin smooth and soft. Many say that this moisturizer has a skin lightening effect, but I think that's an exaggeration. It also says that it enhances skin color on the bottle, but I personally think that it only evens skin tone. It has an ice cream texture which spreads and absorbs easily. It's also affordable and feels amazing on the skin. 3) Aesop - B Triple C Facial Balancing Gel Main features: It lightens acne marks, brightens skin complexion, and calms red and inflamed acne. I use it mainly to reduce acne marks and it shows amazing results, visibly reducing my acne marks the next day. It also soothes new acne and boosts skin radiance. It has a gel-like texture, so it doesn't spread easily. I usually use it two to three times a week after first applying a toner and then a serum.

All time favorite Skincare Meme With a product to Match
I created this meme and it’s definitely my favorite for a couple of main reasons. As an esthetician it makes me crazy to hear when clients are not using a proper cleanser for their skin. You cannot wonder why you are experiencing issues with your skin if you aren’t using the proper cleanser suited for you. This meme fits the product listed because bar soap is not what you should be using to cleanse your face, the bar soap will strip your skin and throw off the ph. balance of your skin and can create dehydration and dullness. The product listed is Skin Ceuticals Simply Clean Cleanser. I have noticed a great difference with using this product. It is suitable for oily, combo and normal skin types as well as all ages. I use this to get a good cleanse morning and night. At night it can be used for a second cleanse. The claims of the cleanser are it gently cleanses and removes dirt from your pores by exfoliating dead skin cells from the surface of your skin to create a smoother and clearer surface. I have noticed my skin is noticeably softer after using this cleaner for as little as 1 week. The cleanser has a couple key ingredients that will benefit you. Fruit acid blend for exfoliating properties and chamomile in which is anti-inflammatory and calming for your skin. The product has a rich lather and is great for combo or acne prone skin. The gel helps keep moisture in your skin. I prefer gel over a foaming cleanser in which that can tend to strip the natural oils from your skin and create an overproduction of oil leading to more blemishes and clogged pores. I will continue to use this cleanser, it has won my heart to healthy glowing skin. Who doesn’t want soft radiant skin. Pair this with a good moisturizer and you will see a beautiful difference.
