INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT: Adaptogens ft YTTP 🍄

femmefindings
When I accidentally stumbled into Youth To The People’s location on Traction Ave in the LA Arts District last year, I thought I had discovered an artist’s gallery. I didn’t think too much of the brand again until I joined the Cherie community. Because YTTP is basically homegrown in the backyard of my favorite LA neighborhood, I WANTED to love this brand. I wanted to love it when it said it was sustainable and vegan. I loved it more when it donated its proceeds during Covid-19’s early stages and still managed to dish out funds for LGBTQ+ organizations last month. Ethically, I love what YTTP is trying to stand for. After doing some research and trying a couple of their products, however, YTTP is starting to feel more like the “Moon Juice” of skincare. Expensive. Cult-y. Unsubstantiated. Okay but first, what are adaptogens? If you wondered this and struggled to find an answer as I did, you are not alone. As it turns out, “adaptogens” have been adopted by the wellness world as herb/supplements used in alternative medicine to regulate stress and hormones (Maca, Ashwagandha and Reishi to name a few). Dietary supplementation with Ashwagandha have shown to reduce stress. Reishi is a mushroom used in Indian and Chinese medicine as dietary anti-oxidants. While studies may support these adoptogens’ dietary benefits, very little data supports its use in skincare. I didn’t get to try the Kale cleanser but if you want a salad to soak into your face, it’s definitely not going to be in the 15 second cleansing step. I paid $26 for the following sampler bundle: YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist with Reishi + Ashwagandha
I didn’t know what to expect from a mist that could be used up in a matter of days, but aside from the fine mist nozzle that I actually enjoyed, I found the ingredients to be overwhelmingly unimpressive. The peptides and Reishi mushroom extract are there. But water is the first ingredient and that’s essentially what I paid for. No changes to my skin at all. The feel didn’t bother me but the product was forgettable. YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream with Ashwagandha + Reishi
I actually thoroughly enjoyed the feel of this moisturizer upon application! It feels occlusive enough for a summer moisturizer and is the perfect balance of heaviness. Other than the Ashwagandha + Reishi extracts, the product is formulated with allotoin (soothing), peptides and squalene. The formulation is well thought out but didn’t give me superior results. $58 for 2oz just isn’t justified- it would drain my pocket too quickly! Is YTTP really for its people? While I am impressed by YTTP’s mission, the brand doesn’t really consider the inaccessibility of their price points in the name of giving youth “to the people”. If skincare really is for all skin colors and types, it would consider the socioeconomic disparities that plague our communities. Cheers 🥂

Brand Spotlight: Youth to the People
If you’ve been following my posts, you know how much love I have for Youth to the People’s skincare products, and I’m here to say that love extends to the brand itself. ♻️ environmental consciousness ♻️ All of YTTP’s packaging comes in glass bottles that are reusable or recyclable, and their box packaging is made from post-consumer, recyclable paper. The clean glass bottles let the gorgeous products speak for themselves while minimizing waste. In addition to all this, I love how straightforward their packaging is - if drives me crazy when the volume of a product looks doubled because of all the extra packaging a brand threw on to make it look fancy. YTTP also strongly encourages their customers to reuse packaging by refilling travel containers from the full size product and even offer a 16oz refill bottle for their cleanser so you don’t have to keep buying new pump bottles. YTTP also places a huge focus on sustainably sourcing the products inside their bottles! 🌈 social consciousness 🌈 One of YTTP’s mottos is “skincare for all.” They actively work to find models of all different ages and skin colors to ensure that everyone sees themselves represented by their skincare products. They don’t shy away from difficult conversations and seek out ways to give diverse voices a platform. Every June, they create a pride month collaboration fundraiser produc and year round, they are committed to giving a percentage of their proceeds to support non-profits and working in their local LA community. 🥗 ingredient consciousness 🥗 YTTP isn’t just out here trying to crank out new products for us to fill our shelves with. They are very ingredient focused and take their inspiration from the same foods that are good for us when we eat them. They craft each new product taking inspiration from these ingredients and working to target specific results. Their products are vegan and cruelty free - basically an organic salad for your face. 💫 my superstars 💫 YTTP has three starter sets for oily/combo/dry skin that can get you started with a regimen specialized for you, but used correctly, all of their products are formulated to work for all skin types (so you could be like me and just use them all...sorry wallet!!) That said, my all time favorites are the Superfood Cleanser and the Hydrate and Glow Oil. If I had to, I could probably get by with just these two products. They are so simple, gentle and effective. The cleanser nourishes and cleans with no stripping and the oil is lightweight and packed with SO many hydrating ingredients like prickly pear, maqui, and squalane. More realistically, when I travel I bring these two and a mini size of one or both of their moisturizers which is also my fallback routine anytime my skin is flaring up! Have you tried youth to the people? What’s your favorite product? Any questions about the brand? PS. @CheriePicksince you asked - if I haven’t made it clear already, YTTP is my favorite skincare brand 😉

Take a peek inside my Skin Cabinets
Since my husband decided to use the guest bath I have claimed both cabinets....and all my products still don’t fit in them!! I’ll share my bathroom sink area in another post, along with my mini fridge and backup shelf. My fingers are tired from tagging all the products right now 🙈 Let me know if there are any you’re curious about. I believe most products you can find already reviewed on my page. But if there is one not posted about, let me know and I’d be happy to share my thoughts with you. Some of my must haves are: Farmacy Beauty- Honeymoon Glow, Better Daze Ahead & Cheer Up Indie Lee - CO-Q10 Toner and & Brightening Wash Medik8- Crystal Retinal & HYDR8 + B5 Caudalie - Radiance Serum Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Youth to The People - Superberry Mask, Energy Facial The Ordinary- Niacinamide & Hyaluronic & the Facial Peel Elemis - Suerfood Mask Many of these have been repurchases. If a product is sitting out on my counter or in my cabinets, I’m enjoying using them. I have baskets of products that didn’t work so well for me but I keep them for friends to try or to create fun texture art. It’s taken me at least an entire year to gain the collection I have. I had subscribed to many subscription boxes so a good majority of products came to me that way. I haven’t received PR in a long time and the few items I did receive were from some small companies. I don’t mind receiving PR/gifts I just am very picky about what I will use so sometimes the offers don’t jive with them. Let’s see your skincare cabinet ☺️

💻 my workday essentials 💻
Being at a desk all day can be a real drain on our bodies for so many reasons. We all know sitting for long periods of time is bad for health, but air conditioned office environments can also be extremely drying and hard on our skin. In addition to starting my day off with a hydrating routine, there are a few things I keep at my desk to keep myself refreshed and pampered all day long. 1) Face mist Face mists are the perfect mid-day pick me up. They’re a great way to keep your face hydrated and when I use a face mist I really feel like I’m taking care of myself. So many of them are packed with hydrating ingredients that it’s almost a whole mini skin care routine in itself! 2) Hand Cream I love a good hand cream all the time, but especially these days while we’re washing our hands and sanitizing SO often. I prefer hand creams that are really thick and take a minute or so to sink in...i mean you have to take a break from typing for that right? 3) Lip Balm I use lip balm liberally all. day. long. Hydrated lips make me feel instantly healthier and like my whole body is hydrated! I keep one with me absolutely everywhere I go. In addition to these three essentials, I always have a water bottle on hand because all this external hydration would be wasted if I weren’t also hydrating internally!! I also keep a mini spf at my desk to make reapplying throughout the day easy, especially right before I begin my commute home. How do you practice self-care at your desk or on the go?!

Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream
Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream
I love the texture of this cream— it’s thick but not greasy. I usually tend to use a lighter cream in the day and thicker at night. This is perfect for my combo/aging skin. I love the addition of mushrooms for added antioxidants and other benefits.

Clean Beauty: A Brand That Goes The Extra Mile
Clean Beauty: A Brand That Goes The Extra Mile
There is no doubt that clean beauty has taken over the beauty market. Clean beauty focuses mostly on “clean” ingredients, but YTTP is a brand that also puts an emphasis on “clean” packaging. All of their products are made of glass and can be recycled. Their formulas are also all sustainable. The Adaptogen Cream was the first clean beauty product I ever tried, and I have been hooked on it for over two years. Is you skin stressed? Dry? Red? Irritated? The magic cream tackles all those concerns and leaves you glowing! #CherieConversations

📣 𝑰𝒕'𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒆𝒏𝒅. 𝑳𝒆𝒕'𝒔 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒚 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅! And by party, what I really mean is... dancing my b-u-t-t off in my jammies while doing my skincare routine with youth to the people products! 😂🤣 What are your plans for the evening? YTTP kindly gifted me this amazing set and I literally SQUEALED when it happened because this is a brand I truly, absolutely love and will not hesitate to repurchase over and over again. I love so many of their products. But, Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream was one I've not tried before. It's actually a product I've gifted to my mom a long while ago and its been her holy grail cream ever since. I've repurchased it for her about 3 or 4 times now. And I never realized why she loved it so much until now!! It's such a smooth, creamy, and hydrating product and it's so comforting on the skin. Hm, I knew that crazy lady was onto something, LOL! Oh and the mist? Well, that's another must have item for me now, too! I am (clearly!!) addicted to it and can't seem to stop using it. 😜🤟

Moisturizing and more!!!
Moisturizing and more!!!
Sharing the beauty of YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream with Ashwagandha + Reishi This has got to be one of the most hydrating moisturizers I’ve ever tried. And this beauty goes above and beyond moisturizing. This is a fragrance free formula made with Squalane, Jojba and Shae Butter. An Adaptogenic extract blend helps cope with dryness, redness, fine-lines and wrinkles while calming Peptides keep the skin response to environmental stressors in check. Proprietary Adaptogen Blend: Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, and Reishi. The use of adaptogens as medicine, taken internally and applied topically, has been championed by Eastern medicine and Ayurveda for 5,000 years. (Verbiage from their site) . Claims: 100% Vegan ingredients Recyclable packaging Made in USA 🇺🇸 Non-comedogenic No animal testing 🐰 No dimethicone No parabens No phthalates No fragrance I’ve been using this cream for about two weeks now. Out of all the moisturizers I have open I keep reaching for this. I have normal to dry skin and this helps keep it in balance. And I know I always say this, but just a dime-size seriously covers my entire face and neck. My favorites of theirs are - YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Yerba Mate Resurfacing + Exfoliating Energy Facial with Enzymes YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask - this one is a must have! Oh so good!!! I have so much admiration for this brand. When you go to their website the first thing you see is their support and dedication to taking a stance in ending racism and well as their long-time support of the LGBTQ community. 100% of the profits from their YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - With Pride Minis Kit 🏳️‍🌈 goes towards GSLEN. This kit has some of the top products. I’m headed to grab myself one right now 🏃‍♀️($34) . #contentcreator

I got this in a Sephora play b
I got this in a Sephora play box and was kind of excited to use this. I’ve heard people rave about it. It’s really creamy and doesn’t have a scent which love. I’ve used half of it, it makes the really dry parts of my skin feel really refreshed and smooth. One thing i really love about this moisturizer is when my face is red and I apply it, it gets rid of the irritation! Really impressed by that. Considering buying the full size 🤔.

Youth To The People Adaptogen
Youth To The People Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream [I’ve been using this cream for a couple weeks, and just like every other YTTP product I’ve met, I love it. The texture is interesting—almost like if Protini and Lala had a baby, or maybe if Lala and their Superfood Air-Whip had one, I don’t know. It’s not thick, but I can feel its protective, soothing presence on my face, which is something I really like for a moisturizer, bc this COLD WIND moving in?? Boy, she’s rough. ]
