My Tried and True Skincare Triad for $75/Yr
HONEST FEMME FINDS: I’ve been using the following products as my base skincare since 2017. If I had to give up all skincare products to be a minimalist monk, the three skincare ingredients I’d keep are Vitamin C, Retinol (Vit A), and SPF. Of course I’m cheating a little because the products I mention below are formulated with holy grail humectants, vitamins and oils such as HA, Aloe, Vit E, Squalene etc. Meera's Beauty - Vitamin C Serum 20% Hyaluronic Acid
Dullness & uneven texture serums
Anti-wrinkle face serums
Serums for clogged pores

Skincare 101: Retinoids
Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are antioxidants and encourage cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, suppress excess serum production, and inhibit tyrosinase production. They prevent damage from free radicals, reduce fine lines, improve skin texture, prevent hyperpigmentation, fade hyperpigmentation, reduce acne, and minimize the appearance of pores. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? • Retinoic Acid: Tretinoin (ie Retin-A) and isotretinoin (ie Accutane) is the gold-standard of aging and is typically quite effective at treating acne. Prescription-Only. I can’t preach my love for my Apostrophe - Topical Formula 0.05% Tret formula enough. It has been the only product to dramatically reduce my acne, plus banished my oily skin and orange peel texture. But go slow, it’s potent! If you can afford it, go the Tretinoin route, as it is the most clinically-supported retinoid for the benefits it offers! • Naphthoic Acid: Adapalene (ie Differin) has retinoid-like activity and is approved by the FDA for treating acne. Available OTC up to 0.1%. I had horrible breakouts and irritation using DIFFERIN - DIFFERIN Acne Treatment Gel , but know many love it! • Retinoic Acid Ester: Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (ie, HPR, Granactive Retinoid) is new to the OTC retinoid scene as a gentler retinoid with similar benefits, but has limited clinical data to back up its claims. I tried The Ordinary - Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion and honestly saw no difference, positive or negative. But I’ve thought of using this as a hand treatment alongside a moisturizer with sunscreen! • Retinaldehyde: Retinal and retinyl-aldehyde are broken down into retinoic acid in one step, making it the most potent/effective OTC option for anti-aging. I’ve not tried Medik8 but know they’re hugely popular for their retinal products! • Retinol: Retinol breaks down into retinoic acid in two steps. You can find it up to 1% OTC for reducing sun damage and wrinkles. I love The Ordinary - Retinol 1% in Squalane for its gentleness and moisturizing formula (perfect for dry skin), but a more bougie option that I’ve enjoyed is DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni Retinol Cream , though it is deceptively potent so be sure to go slow! • Retinol Ester: Retinyl acetate, “” linoleate, “” palmitate, “” propionate takes three steps to break down into retinoic acid. There’s not much research to support these esters but they are known to be very gentle.
The Ordinary Broke Me Out! HELP! 🆘😭😢
I’m a ride or die for The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% so I wanted to try their Retinol and boy, do I regret it! The Ordinary - Retinol 1% in Squalane 😖😖😖😖 I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the benefits of retinol and retinoids and wanted to start to incorporate it into my routine. I was SUPERR careful to use a little bit at a time (starting off with once a week to two times a week). I understand that the benefits become more evident over time, that there might be purging, and not to expect any sudden results, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for this big breakout in between my eyebrows!! 😅 it’s been 3 weeks of using this product and at first I only saw very minimal redness, but it got so much worse! 😢😢 PLEASE if anyone has any insight on how to heal my skin after using this product, it would be greatly appreciated!! 💔💔💔💔💔💔❤️❤️ (🙏🏼Algorithm, don’t let your girl down pls! 😿)

Biore UV Watery Essence
If you’re searching for a lightweight SPF that quickly absorbs into your skin, this is it. Unlike sunscreens that leave a greasy or oily residue, this one absorbs easily into the skin, with no visible whitecast. It also works very well under makeup, and personally, I find it very hydrating. Lightweight and moisturizing, this sunscreen is fantastic for a hot, humid day. However, there are a few things I don’t love... it has fragrance, so if you have sensitive skin, this may be an issue! It also has a relatively strong alcohol smell. While some alcohol in a product isn’t uniformly harmful for the skin, I don’t love the smell, and I wonder about alcohol concentration here. For this reason, I’m not sure this will be my go-to. Bioré - UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+
SPF 50+ that works so well under makeup!
There has been mixed reviews regarding the Japanese SPF 50+ sun cream Bioré - UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ but I personally didn’t mind it. For the life of me I cannot read Japanese but thanks to google translator I manage to translate what is written on the back of this sunscreen- I have attached the translation. Note: I have dry sensitive skin Here were some “oh no moments” after reading what was written on the sunscreen: - This product states not good for sensitive skin lol 😂🤣😂 but I already brought 2 bottles... oops. So far I have had no adverse reaction to it. - The second ingredient in this SPF is ethanol which is drying to the skin. U can smell the alcohol on initial application but it fades away pretty quick. I didn’t lather on a lot, just 1/2 a teaspoon and my skin didn’t dry out. The “YES, let’s buy it now moments” - Japanese sunscreens claims to be light and don't leave your skin feeling greasy after application - this is so TRUE. It did not leave a white cast and dries very well ( must be from the Ethanol content). -My make up application has been flawless, no pills or balling of product. No dry spots or make up separation! Will I continue to use it?.. well I did buy 2 bottle so let’s not waste it. However I might not use it everyday due to the high alcohol content. Have u tried this Japanese sunscreen? Let me know your experience 😉
1 empty + 1 newbie!
Vitamin C has been a staple in my routine for years due to its ability to lighten bright spots and give my skin an overall glow. I’ve tried several products in the past that stung my skin badly (sorry, fans of The Ordinary—though I’m happy if it works for you!). The product I’ve used consistently every day for the past year or so is the LilyAna Naturals - Vitamin C Serum . I love it because it feels downright soothing and has NEVER stung my skin. In addition to 20% vitamin C, it also contains 5% hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, aloe juice, jojoba oil, and a few botanical extracts. The texture is a thick, opaque serum that spreads easily and absorbs quickly. This was my fourth or fifth bottle. Now that I’m almost out of my tried and true, I’ve started phasing in this MYMIEL - Golden Hour Brightening Elixir by using it every other day. I won this serum in a giveaway, and I’ll be honest with you—the sticker price shocked me a little: it’s $104 for 1oz. I’m gonna have to see some truly miraculous effects to ever shell out that kind of money for a product. My first impressions are that it’s a nice serum: it’s more watery than the Lilyana Naturals, but that means it spreads very easily and absorbs well. I’ve been using it in my morning routine and it layers well with other products, which is important because I’ve been piling them on now that I’m working and taking classes from home 😂 I like that it has ferulic acid, niacinamide, and vitamins B and E, in addition to vitamin C. I also like that the whole line of MyMiel’s products are made by Harvard dermatologists, and that they donate a portion of their profits to honeybee research. It has that notorious hot dog water smell that most vitamin C serums have. I’ll be updating this post with my final thoughts once I finish the MyMiel serum! Has anyone else heard of or tried anything from this brand? 🍯 UPDATE: I finished the bottle and sadly, it didn’t work any miracles for me. I think it performed about as well as the Lilyana serum in terms of brightening + lightening dark spots, and the Lilyana one doesn’t smell like hot dog water. Save your coins, friends!!

Serums are best for targeted application. Allow to fully absorb into the skin before applying anything over it. You can use it both night and day, but make sure to use SPF with it as is makes the skin sun sensitive. this awesome ingredient can be found in eye creams, toners, and spot treatments but make sure to buy AIRTIGHT and SUNSAFE packaging. Oxygen and sunlight cause Vitamin C to break down and work less.

I have been looking for a serum for awhile, until I found this little guy. I have been using this for almost 8 months now and is totally hooked!! My skin was the softest and dewiest it had ever been. Without makeup my face looks great and thanks to the new smoothness, makeup went on so well. I love how this smells - very citrusy and has very slight hints of ginger . The product is heavy and is more like a oil than a serum. Now , because of this I am only giving it a 4 star!! My one recommendation is to apply this at night before bed because your face is left a little sticky. An added bonus to this is when you wake up in the morning, your skin will be baby soft and ready to take on the day!Sweet CHEF - Ginger + Vitamin C Serum Shot

HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum My friend introduced me to this product and since starting using this product I know this will stay in my routine for a long time. It's a great retinol product and because it's a retinol alternative it's very gentle on the skin, gentle enough for daily use. The texture of this product is watery and jelly-like and absorbs into the skin amazingly. The main ingredient in this product is the Ayurvedic Babchi plant which this product is derived from. This ingredient acts very similarly to a retinol but very gentle and causes no irritation. There are also PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) in this product that helps gently exfoliate the skin to show a brighter and more even skin tone. After months of use I really see a difference in my skin. It's brighter, less dull, and helps with any hyperpigmentation that I have. When used with another Herbivore product, the Prism, my skin is just glowing. These two products when used together have really changed my skin. This product retails for $54.00 USD on the Herbviore and Sephora website. This is a steep price but trust me, it is worth every penny. For those who want something to help with anti-aging, dullness, brightness, and pigmentation you should really try this. And for those who think retinols are too harsh, you should really give this a try.

Sweetchef Ginger + Vitamin C Serum Shot
Lets talk about everyone’s brightening bff Vitamin C serum !!! 🍊✨ - I haven’t really tried that many vitamin c serums because after I tried the Mario Badescu one (its trash dont recommend) and had the most awful reaction ever I was basically much scarred from ever using one again. Also a lot of vit c serums are pretty darn pricy and I haven’t gotten myself to actually go out and treat myself to a good one. I picked the Ginger + Vitamin C Serum shot by @sweetchefskin (glow recipes sister brand hi ily) from Target and have been using it consistently in the am for a few weeks - This serum is only $20 which really isn’t bad for a face serum and I have really been enjoying it so far! The serums texture feels a bit tacky at first but it absorbed into my skin so well and it was easy to layer on all my other products. The smell is super subtle/refreshing and not overpowering whatsoever. There wasn’t really any immediate results which I didn’t expect but overtime it has helped with some hyperpigmentation and evening out my skin. My only big downside would have to be the dropper. It was sort of a pain to work with/ product for out, but it wasn’t that big of a deal for me. I wouldn’t say this serum is anything intense so it’s definitely a good vitamin c serum for beginners that wont break the bank! - What are your holy grail Vitamin C serums? I need to try some new ones out 🧡
Vitamin C power✨
reversa - Radiance-C Concentrate 20% Pure Vitamin C One of the most important vitamins for skincare is vitamin C. Vitamin C is crucial for 20 years olds. This product helps with dullness, hyperpigmentation, uneven texture and evens out skin tone. Additionally, vitamin c aids in sun damage and works tremendously with SPF to protect the skin. The concentrate also has hyaluronic acid and vitamin E which aids in moisture for the skin. Great for normal to dry skin types. ——————————————— How to use? This product is a stable vitamin C, thus it is safe to use during both, the AM and PM. However when using during the day, SPF is a critical. Rinse the face, tone and apply the vitamin C by gently patting the face. ——————————————— My experience I live by this product! I have using this for over a year and it has literally saved my skin. I suffered from sun damage, I had white spots, lots of hyperpigmentation and dullness. The high concentration of 20% has cured the hyperpigmentation and the sun damage. It has significantly treated the dullness in my skin and the hyaluronic acid has simultaneously created hydration. ——————————————— Recommend 100% As a result, I highly highly recommend this product. It is important to build a tolerance for vitamin C. Start with a low percentage (5%) and slowly build a tolerance. A continuous daily use will create huge a difference to the skin!

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
