May was Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and since summer is closely approaching I wanted to make a post about how important it is to protect our skin with an SPF everyday! Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Using a sunscreen can help prevent skin cancer by protecting our skin from harmful UV rays. It’s also important to note that no matter the season, your skin is your largest organ and you need to protect it from all environmental pollutants - not just the sun. The sun emits it’s harmful UV rays year-round. Even on cloudy days up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate your skin. You want to make sure you are using a sunscreen that offers Broad Spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. What’s the difference between the two? ☀️UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles, age spots/dark sun spots. UVA rays can pass through window glass and clouds meaning, yes - you need protection from these rays inside or even while driving in your car. ☀️UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and aid in the development of skin cancer. This is why you will need a sunscreen that protects you from both, and has an SPF of at LEAST 30 or higher. ⛅️You put a lot of time and money into your skin care ; why would you throw it all away by not protecting it from the sun? Before being interested in Esthetics/Skin I used to never think the right amount of sun protection was necessary and I was in those tanning beds ALLLL the time years ago.🤦🏻‍♀️ But once I learned the importance of protecting the skin and all the damage the sun is capable of - it’s just not worth it. Plus, there’s always self tanner and spray tans :) These are some of my favorite sunscreens to use at the beach or in the sun by the pool! Supergoop! - Mattescreen SPF 40
BADGER - Active Kids, Natural Mineral Sunscreen Cream, SPF 30 PA+++, Tangerine & Vanilla
And of course stay hydrated all day with cold water 💧 I also really love Colorescience and Elta MD sunscreen which i will post about later 💕 #spf #sunprotection #CherieCreator

☀️ DON’T STOP WEARING SPF🍁
🍁 I get that it’s fall, and a lot of people tend to associate cooling temperatures with less sun. this is sort of accurate, to a certain degree, the changing of the seasons is actually affected by the fact that the suns rays are hitting us at a less direct angle than they do during the summer ☀️ colder temperatures ❌ less sun The sun is still there, and it still wants to make your skin age! i use Supergoop! - Mattescreen SPF 40 every day year round to protect my skin. i wanna look 22 forever people! 🍁 UVA for aging and UVB for burning as they say. don’t stop putting SPF into your skin care routine every day even if it’s 30° outside, or even if you don’t go outside. ☀️ Supergoop! - Mattescreen SPF 40 is $38 for 1.5 ounces, and it is totally worth it. I use this product as a primer and as my SPF for the day. I’ve been using it since May, and I am still on my first bottle! you can shake the bottle for an arrow with texture, or you can do what I do and want to squeeze out. I think it applies better when it’s not shaken 🍁 this product contains argan oil which moisturize the skin is not greasy, butterfly bush extract which protects against blue light, and white mulberry root to improve skin tone!

The Sunscreen I Can’t Get Enough of
I was painfully tired of sunscreens that left me looking ashy and pasty. I tried Supergoop! - Mattescreen SPF 40 and haven’t turned back since. It glides on smoothly and feels like it’s actually nourishing my skin while also protecting me from any harmful sun rays at the same time. Not to mention, the matte formula really balances out my skin. I once believed that Black people like myself didn’t need sunscreen but upon research, I’ve come to understand that this is truly a myth rooted in colorism and racism. In fact, scientists recommend that people of all races wear sunscreen even while indoors and even when temperatures cool down. This is why I really like Supergoop because if I have to wear sunscreen to lessen my chances of getting skin cancer, I might as well glow in the process!

Sephora Sun Safety Kit - (Shiseido 2 out of 2)
Sun Safety Kit Shiseido doesn’t disappoint! I really liked how smooth the product sinked into my skin. I wish I had known how liquidy it was until I spilled half of it onto my hand though. In terms of consistency and SPF, I think I prefer the blue 50+ shield 😅 what are your thoughts?

A summer must for dark skin!

This SPF by SuperGoop is the real deal! I was skeptical when I first hear about it because come on.... is there such a thing as clear sunscreen for Black women? Well, there is! It doesn’t feel greasy, doesn’t cause face breakouts and is literally invisible. I love it! Went on a hike in 100 degree heat with it recently and it protected me from sunburn.

Had high hopes, but still searching for SPF 😭
Had high hopes, but still searching for SPF 😭
Was hoping this could act as a primer before my makeup but instead it caused my makeup to flake apart and apply unevenly! I was more looking for a sunscreen that could hydrate my skin and act as a base to my makeup! Something a little tacky so that my makeup could adhere to my skin instead of flake apart! I may be trying some TULA SPF products next! Anyone have any other reccomendations? Although - think that this is great on its own for a beach/pool day! 👎 Worst Sunscreens 👎
👎 Worst Sunscreens 👎
Both of these sunscreens are a huge NO from me!! I got them in a Sephora Favorites set a couple months ago. My skin is currently normal dry with acne. On the second slide, the left product is the Coola and the right product is the Biossance. . COOLA - Free Mineral Silk Sunscreen SPF 30 with brand pirchase Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide (provides full-spectrum UVA/UVB protection), Full-Spectrum 360 complex (helps diminish the look of skin damage from exposure to blue light, infrared, and pollution), and Sacred Lotus, White Peony, and Jasmine (visibly soften, moisturize, and illuminate skin to support a more youthful look). Scent: None Consistency/Texture: Rich Cream Price: $42 for 1.5 oz / 44 mL Experience: It is very heavy, you only need a little bit because it spreads, yet it’s hard to spread and becomes very streaky. My skin has been dry lately and so I was expecting to really enjoy this, but I could just feel it sitting on my face all day, it is very heavy on the skin. There is also a heavy white cast that stays throughout the whole day, so definitely would recommend to wear it under makeup if you get this. Repurchase/Recommend: No and debating just throwing the bottle away. The white cast and heavy feeling are uncomfortable and not something I want in a sunscreen. Plus I typically go for SPF 40 or higher. . BIOSSANCE - Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 PA +++ Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide (complete UVA/UVB protection), Water Lily (helps cool and calm the skin), Sugarcane-derived Squalane (helps sunscreen glide effortlessly onto skin while weightlessly locking in lasting moisture). Scent: None Consistency/Texture: Lotion Price: $30 for 1.7 oz / 50 mL Experience: This left a white/blue cast on my skin lol it wasn’t cute. Even with my skin being dry lately, this left my skin looking and feeling greasy/oily the whole day. It also clings to my hair and creates globules that are hard to get out. It’s also very thick and just feels gross on the face. You can feel it on your skin the whole day, along with the gross oily feeling. Repurchase/Recommend: No, I’m debating throwing this one away also lol. It isn’t worth the hassle of trying to use it up, but there’s no point in wasting it if I can use it while I’m just sitting at home and not going anywhere with anyone to see it. The oily and heavy feelings are really unpleasant.

☁️ i am in love with the brand SUPERGOOP! their whole line is full of clean and effective sun protective products. recently i just picked up a big and a lil Supergoop! - Defense Refresh (Re)setting Mist SPF 40 🌥 this is the old version, sephora is currently out of their new bottle and formula, but it’s essentially the same. it contains peppermint and rosemary oil, and mineral sunscreen ingredients. ⛅️ i really prefer the old version! its so easy to use and very effective. they’re serious when it says: keep your eyes closed three seconds after application! or its gonna sting like heck 🌤 the mist application makes it SO easy to apply and reapply over makeup. it helps with setting, makes your face last, and can keep oil at bay ☀️ hopefully ill be able to find more of the old stuff!

I have never found a sunscreen that works so well. It is not irritating, doesn’t cause breakouts, and it feels comfortable to wear. I also love that it has such a high protection rating. I have repurchased this 10+ times and will continue to repurchase! It is very affordable, although a bit hard to find. If you have a hard time finding sunscreen you can wear everyday, I highly recommend give the Purito Unscented SPF 50 a try. PURITO - Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+
