Trending Ingredients: The (Mostly) Legit Ones!
Some trendy ingredients launch into understandable “cult” status thanks to their grounding in research. Some are known for their benefits in other medical fields but are still substantiating their clinical efficacy in topical dermatology. But these three are my favourite “trendy” ingredients, with some example products included! My Skin: Combo, Sensitive; Acne, Eczema. Niacinamide is so popular now that you can’t scroll without seeing mention of vitamin B3! At lower %, it’s an effective humectant and antioxidant that offers anti-inflammatory benefits for sensitive and/or irritated skin. At 4-5%+, niacinamide controls sebum (oil) production, minimizes pores, and has been (clinically) found to reduce acne. If the common 10% is too strong for you, dilute it 1:1 in another serum! MelissaTringleHi :) love this. You should mention that 1% retinol is the higher strength retinol for otc. It is not well tolerated by most for a beginner friendly retinol. With the craze around retinol right now I see horror stories and it really is sad because it really is a nice ingredient! You juste have to go slow and be extremely patient! Also what do you mean by “cosmetically elegant” for the drunk elephant retinol? Like just better packaging lol?
Nov. 29, 2020
SkinsitiveI definitely recommend folks opt for a 0.2% or lower for a beginning retinol percentage! In regards to “cosmetically elegant”, I mean in regards to scent, texture, finish, how quickly it absorbs, etc.

Skincare 101: Retinoids
Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are antioxidants and encourage cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, suppress excess serum production, and inhibit tyrosinase production. They prevent damage from free radicals, reduce fine lines, improve skin texture, prevent hyperpigmentation, fade hyperpigmentation, reduce acne, and minimize the appearance of pores. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? • Retinoic Acid: Tretinoin (ie Retin-A) and isotretinoin (ie Accutane) is the gold-standard of aging and is typically quite effective at treating acne. Prescription-Only. I can’t preach my love for my Apostrophe - Topical Formula 0.05% Tret formula enough. It has been the only product to dramatically reduce my acne, plus banished my oily skin and orange peel texture. But go slow, it’s potent! If you can afford it, go the Tretinoin route, as it is the most clinically-supported retinoid for the benefits it offers! • Naphthoic Acid: Adapalene (ie Differin) has retinoid-like activity and is approved by the FDA for treating acne. Available OTC up to 0.1%. I had horrible breakouts and irritation using DIFFERIN - DIFFERIN Acne Treatment Gel , but know many love it! • Retinoic Acid Ester: Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (ie, HPR, Granactive Retinoid) is new to the OTC retinoid scene as a gentler retinoid with similar benefits, but has limited clinical data to back up its claims. I tried The Ordinary - Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion and honestly saw no difference, positive or negative. But I’ve thought of using this as a hand treatment alongside a moisturizer with sunscreen! • Retinaldehyde: Retinal and retinyl-aldehyde are broken down into retinoic acid in one step, making it the most potent/effective OTC option for anti-aging. I’ve not tried Medik8 but know they’re hugely popular for their retinal products! • Retinol: Retinol breaks down into retinoic acid in two steps. You can find it up to 1% OTC for reducing sun damage and wrinkles. I love The Ordinary - Retinol 1% in Squalane for its gentleness and moisturizing formula (perfect for dry skin), but a more bougie option that I’ve enjoyed is DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni Retinol Cream , though it is deceptively potent so be sure to go slow! • Retinol Ester: Retinyl acetate, “” linoleate, “” palmitate, “” propionate takes three steps to break down into retinoic acid. There’s not much research to support these esters but they are known to be very gentle.
Ingredients to Build your Routine Around
I am 35 years old with two kids. I have dry / normal skin. My top concerns are fine lines & wrinkles, preventing aging, dullness, and dark circles. When I started my skincare routine, all I knew was that I started to notice fine lines & wrinkles and wanted to buy new products for “anti-aging”. After a lot of research, here are my Top 5 Ingredients with proven benefits for 30s Skin: 1. Retinol Retinol is a powerhouse for wrinkles. It is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A. It alters the behaviour of aged skin cells. It smooths skin texture, enhances radiance and treats aging. Retinol can be irritating to skin, so build up your tolerance gradually starting with a lower percentage and only 1-2 days per week. DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni Retinol Cream Murad - Ready, Radiant, Retinol SKINCEUTICALS - Retinol 0.3 SUNDAY RILEY - Luna Sleeping Night Oil If you need an alternative to retinol because you have sensitive skin or you are pregnant or breastfeeding, bakuchiol is a good plant-based all natural alternative to retinol or rosehip oil is high in Vitamin A. HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum BIOSSANCE - Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum The Ordinary - 100% Organic Cold Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil 2. Vitamin C A potent antioxidant that helps reduce skin inflammation, irregular pigmentation, and promotes healthier collagen production. It neutralizes free radical damage and great for AM routine. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Time to Wake Up Duo SUNDAY RILEY - CEO 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum VERSED - STROKE OF BRILLIANCE Brightening Serum 3. Exfoliate / AHAs Exfoliation is about boosting cell turnover. You should do it twice a week. Use different acids like lactic acid and glycolic acid. Build up a tolerance. You can use toners, serums, or creams. Kate Somerville - Liquid ExfoliKate Triple Acid Resurfacing Treatment SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment The Ordinary - Lactic Acid 10% + HA FARMACY - Honeymoon Glow Serum 4. Peptides Peptides preserve and boost collagen production. Peptides are short chain amino acids that act as building blocks for proteins such as collagen. It improves the appearance of firmness and wrinkles. Extensive research supports that peptides improve skin function and appearance. The Ordinary - ''Buffet'' OLAY - Wrinkle Correction Serum with Vitamin B3+ Collagen Peptides PAULA'S CHOICE - Peptide Booster 5. Hydration In your 30s your skin tends to get dehydrated. Hydration will plump up skin. Add a hydrating toner, facial spray, hyaluronic acid serum. The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 **BONUS** SPF Never forget you sunscreen ☀️
Love at first scoop
This moisturizer is bomb 💣. I used it for 2 days now and I am obsessed. I’ve never seen a moisturizer just glide onto my skin and instantly I feel plump, smooth and recharged. It also calmed down any irritation and made my skin so calm. It’s a CBD infused moisturizer which helps maintain the acid mantle. What is the Acid Mantle? The acid mantle is a protective barrier produced by healthy skin that serves as a defense to block bacteria and other contaminants. Your acid mantle can be damaged by over cleansing, over exfoliation and the use of harsh acids (via Lord Jones website). What’s in it: ceramides cbd oil sunflower seed oil hyaluronic acid squalane LORD JONES - Acid Mantle Repair CBD Moisturizer So far my skin has been so calm and soft. It looks so dewy and refreshed. I will keep using this just because I love the way it feels! Have you tried CBD products for your skin?
CBD in Skincare: Miracle Ingredient? 🍁
Every year there's new trendy ingredients featured all over skincare - from serums to moisturizers and everything in between! Some of this year's trendiest ingredients are niacinamide, bakuchiol, retinol, and CBD. I've used all the ingredients on the 2020 trendy skincare list, but one has easily made its way all over my vanity - CBD! So why should CBD be in skincare? Well it has a lot of great benefits to the skin, like: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory can reduce sebum and reduce acne soothes irritated skin and can treat inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea rich in Vitamins A, C and E rich in fatty acids, Omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 I use it because it's extremely soothing to my skin during breakouts and when I'm using a retinoid that dries out my skin. It calms redness and inflammation from breakouts and really helps them to heal quickly! Here's some of the products I've used. LORD JONES - Acid Mantle Repair CBD Moisturizer is my daily moisturizer. It's a thick cream full of CBD, ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Even though it's thick, it sinks into the skin and doesn't feel heavy. This is perfect for my combo skin during the cooler months, and wasn't too heavy during the summer either. If you have dry skin I would layer an oil over the top of it! Contains 250mg of CBD and 1.7 oz retails for $75. LORD JONES - Royal Oil Hemp-Derived CBD has only two ingredients, grapeseed oil and broad spectrum CBD oil. This is not only a skincare item but also a tincture, so you can take it orally or add it to drinks. I use this on top of my skincare or as my sole skincare step if I'm in a rush. It's thicker than my other CBD oils so I find it a bit more versatile. Contains 1000mg of CBD and 1 oz retails for $100. prima - Night Magic CBD Intensive Face Oil is a gorgeous oil blend of CBD, prickly pear oil, moringa oil, hemp seed oil, and a bunch of other skin-beneficial oils! It claims to "reveal soft, bright, intensely hydrated skin" and it gives me just that! I use this as my last step in my night routine and it seals in all the steps underneath. Contains 300mg of CBD and 1 oz. retails for $88. FLORA+BAST - Age Adapting CBD Serum is the most serum like CBD oil in my collection. It's lightweight, sinks in quickly and smells herbally like you would expect from a CBD product. This is my go-to CBD product because I can use it on its own, mix it with other products and use it to layer. Contains 350mg of CBD and 1 oz. retails for $77. All of the CBD products in this post I recommend and would repurchase. They do not contain THC. It's great for all skin types and skin conditions! #CheriePartner

I’ll start this off with my favourites: MISSHA - Missha All-around Safe Block Essence Sun Milk I’m so sad that I’ve run out of this. If you don’t like the feel of sunscreens that feel thick and heavy, pick this up! you won’t regret it! I also ran out of the Volition sunscreen that I paired along side this one, but recycled it before I took a picture. Briogeo - Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Hair Mask (📍) Again, was so sad to run out of this, check out my post featuring this and the new hair mask I picked up for more info! THE inkey LIST - Niacinamide Oil Control Serum If I could give this 100 stars out of 10, I would. This is my favourite serum of all time and I always have two back ups in my collection! Now for my meh products: SUNDAY RILEY - CEO 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum I liked the way that this felt don’t get me wrong, but I think because of the shimmer effect it has, it may have been breaking me out a bit. This didn’t have enough in it to last me long enough to see any effects. Kate Somerville - DeliKate Recovery Cream this is unbelievable. Although I will never buy this at the $104 price point, it’s a beautiful, thick, heavy cream. Wonderful for winter skin. fresh - Sugar Hydrating Lip Balm, Watermelon I actually have the lime+mint scent, but this is also amazing. I’ve just began started applying all my lip balms on damp lips, and I’ve found it’s made the biggest difference. No more dry lips! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Sili™ Body Lotion (📍) If you’ve seen my marula oil post, you’ve seen that I don’t support Drunk Elephant anymore, this is one of my last products I have from them (that they sent me) and it was too light to be a body cream. I have really dry legs and this didn’t do the trick. I ended up keeping this on my desk as a hand lotion and it worked well! Now for my no good product: Too Faced - Better Than Sex Mascara (📍) I don’t understand that hype around this mascara. On me, it doesn’t make my lashes look longer or fuller, it flakes super easy and it doesn’t hold my curl. Happy to have finished this so I can move on. 📍= product was sent to me for free
Lastest Inkey Order
Hey y’all! So, put in a new inkey order. I’m totally in love with their Q10 serum. Makes my skin super dewy, feels hydrated, and it has its benefits as an antioxidant. I love it primarily because it makes my niacinamide sticky feeing go away! I have only ever tried TO’s niacinamide serum, so giving inkey’s a go. I have heard that the inkey’s is better if you have drier skin, so hoping this works out! I have never tried any squalene oil or alpha arbutrin, so this will be a first for me. If you have any tips, leave them below! ✨✨✨✨✨
Skincare Ingredients 101 ✅
I have sensitive combination skin that is acne-prone and these are ingredients that my skin LOVES! We see them a lot on labels but what do they do and how should we use them? 🍊 Vitamin C 🍊 Vitamin C is awesome for brightening skin and helping with acne scars. Vitamin C also is great for its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Research shows this ingredient can shield skin from visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage. 🔑 The key to using Vitamin C is making sure you use an SPF with it as the last step in your morning routine. Vitamin C can make your skin more prone to the sun’s rays so I’ve heard of people using it at night but for me because it fights free radicals, I love it for the daytime. Additionally, it’s important to note that some Vitamin C products have very short shelf lives. My favorite is currently the very stable Vitamin C found in the Leah Skin Rose + Glow Oil. It’s a clean and cruelty-free facial oil with a Vitamin C that lasts! Some expire as quickly as 3 months due to oxidation which makes the product less effective but the type in this product is good for a year! I also love Farmacy’s Vitamin C Serum. ❤️ Retinol ❤️ Retinol is a product that comes in many forms but is essentially great for skin cell turnover. This can help with fine lines because of this but is essentially a wonderful ingredient for acne because it speeds up that turnover process. For me, this means my breakouts heal faster and it prevents them too. 🔑 Retinol should be slowly incorporated into your skincare routine. I started with it once per week to start. It can initially cause purging, or seemingly more breakouts, which can last up to a few weeks depending on your skin and that’s ok. Stick with it as your skin cleans itself out because eventually it will be once of your favorites for preventing breakouts. You’ll gradually build up use with retinol. I personally like to pair with a heavier moisturizer like Healing Ointment by CeraVe and they’re an awesome pair. I recommend using retinol at night because the sun’s rays can make this less effective. I try to not mix too many actives on my face at once and Vitamin C and retinols do not always mix well and can irritate the skin. By having them applied at different times of day, you give your skin multiple perks over a long period of time. ✨Ceramides✨ Ceramides are fats found in high concentrations in the upper layers of skin. Aging and sun damage reduce the effectiveness of your skin’s natural ceramides which weakens your skin’s barrier. This can result in redness, irritation and dryness. Adding them helps your skin’s barrier and increases hydration which gives you plumper skin with less visible lines and fewer signs of sensitivity. 🔑 I love to have these in my moisturizers. After I cleanse, while my skin is still wet, I use a serum and then a moisturizer with Ceramides. It’s THE best. LEAH - ROSE+GLOW FACIAL OIL CeraVe - Healing Ointment
Favorite Product For Redness-Krave Beauty GBR
Krave Beauty Great Barrier Relief (GBR): This is a skin-soothing serum that helps reset your damaged skin barrier. Key ingredients are tamanu oil, safflower oil, rosehip oil, ceramide, and vitamin B3. I decided to try this serum because my skin was becoming very sensitive due to over-exfoliation. The first 2-3 days of using GBR, my skin started to breakout but I decided to keep using it because it could’ve been due too hormonal acne. Also, I wanted to make sure that my skin wasn’t having an allergic reaction to the actual ingredients in GBR. I’m very happy that I continued to use it because my skin cleared up and I was able to see the true benefits from GBR. This serum has helped so much with my dry skin and redness from over exfoliation. GBR can be used in your morning and evening routines. I use it daily, morning & evening. During my morning routines, I use this before applying a moisturizer. Sometimes, I use GBR as a moisturizer. In the evening, I apply it before an overnight mask. This is my third bottle and I will always repurchase! Price: $28 Rating: 5/5
Krave-Great Barrier Relief
All day color correct and & hydration galore!
Occasionally, my skin gets super sensitive and irritated. It happens mostly when I’m stressed and don’t get enough sleep. My face becomes pimple central. I’m talking big huge red spots all over my face. I have to use my super full coverage and concealers if I want to go out... and I hated doing so over just a simple moisturizer/primer... then I found this powerful combo that actually lets me feel protected. Dr. Jart+ - Cicapair Re-Cover The Cicapair Re-Cover is a super thick cream that color corrects and soothes irritated and sensitive skin. I found that it’s thick consistency didn’t work well when using it alone. I couldn’t blend it into my skin very well. Then I thought to mix it with a moisturizer but not just any.... DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream I LOVE Drunk Elephant. I use a few of their products and have only good things to say about their skincare. This moisturizer is my MUST HAVE... especially when my skin freaks out. It has a whipped texture.. almost like a soufflé. I feel 100% moisturized when I apply it. Not only that- it is supposed to act as a barrier for your skin and I truly feel that it does just that. It provides what seems to be an impenetrable layer defending my skin from environmental factors and preventing the makeup from clogging my pores. When I combine the Cicapair Re-cover with the Lala Retro Whipped Moisturizer, I get the most perfect result. The angry red spots are soothed and color corrected and my face has a barrier layer, allowing me to feel okay about using full coverage makeup!
Dr. Jart+-Cicapair Re-Cover
Krave Great Barrier Relief This is a thicker serum so if you have oily skin I think you could probably wear it alone as a moisturizer, I have combination skin but I am always battling dehydration so I layer this after other serums before my moisturizer. This serum works wonders for me. When I started testing this out I was having one of the worst breakouts I have had in months. I simplified my routine and added this in. My breakouts started healing quicker than usual, my skin felt less irritated and my redness reduced immensely. I also noticed that the marks left behind by those blemishes were less red and seemed to fade upon continued use. I am blown away by this serum and at $28 this is something I always want to have on hand.

🐌 Gary Had Secrets - Secrets to Hydration 🐌
When I think of skincare, I don’t think of snail mucin (slime - snail secretion filtrate) but lo and behold it exists and its a holy grail product 🐌🙌🏻🐌 The ancient Greeks knew Gary’s secret looong before I did. Then France, then Chile, then Korea. Basically everyone else way before me. 💁🏻♀️ Snail mucin is actually incredibly beneficial to skin thanks to some of the different components in it: glycolic acid glycoprotein enzymes copper peptides hyaluronic acid Its also...anti-microbial 🐌 All of these pieces make it great for repairing skin damage, evening skin tone, fading hyperpigmentation, firming and tightening the skill, boosting collagen production and hydrating the skin thanks to its hyaluronic acid. Do I like it? Absolutely I do! Its one of the only moisturizers I’ve ever found that soaks into my skin so nicely and leaves my skin feeling so plump and hydrated AND it hasn’t caused any acne flare-ups for me at all. Actually its been helping my skin stay hydrated and keeping my acne down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Price? The price is comparable to some other Ulta / Sephora beauty picks, but its also a fair price considering a little goes a long way ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Recommend for? I’d recommend it for all skin types, even oily 🙋🏻♀️ It is on the lighter side though, so dry / dehydrated skin types might not benefit as much from it. But if you’re in the market for a lightweight moisturizer, give it a try 🙌🏻 Texture? Not gonna lie, its a little slimy / sticky and it took me about ten minutes of just playing with it between my fingers before I actually put it on my face. But, it spreads easily and absorbs quickly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall thoughts? Overall this product is amazing, its hydrating but light and it really is the only product that I’ve used that has really brought my dehydrated skin back to life and even moreso when combined with my other hydrating products. It makes me hesitant to even think of trying a different moisturizer because my skin feels sooo good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ingredients? Snail Secretion Filtrate, Betaine, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearic acid, Arginine, Dimethicone, Carbomer, Panthenol, Allantoin, Sodium Polyacrylate, Xanthan Gum, Ethyl Hexanediol, Adenosine, Phenoxyethanol.

💛BEST HYALURONIC ACID SERUM EVER! 🧡💙
Myth: Only dry skin can be dehydrated. Wrong! Normal and oily skin can be dehydrated as well. Dehydrated skin is skin that lacks water content, while dryness refers to skin that lacks oil . In fact, oily skin tends to overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of water. This can lead to breakouts and enlarged pores. Other signs of dehydration include tightness, fine lines, dullness, and increased sensitivity. 💛Let’s Talk Hyaluronic Acid🧡💙 Hyalruonic Acid is one of the best answers for dehydrated skin. It’s a humectant, an ingredient that binds to moisture. It has the ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This results in hydrated, soft, plump skin! HADALABO - Gokujyun Premium Lotion contains FIVE types of hyaluronic acid as well as sacaran algae known for its moisturizing properties. Hello hydration! 💦 💛Review🧡💙 (Swipe to see texture pic) This product is a serum with a thick milky consistency. It’s formulated WITHOUT fragrance, dye, or mineral oil.Since this product is a humectant, it’s best to use this product when the skin is wet. I currently use this at night. After I cleanse my skin, I immediately put this on and tap it into my skin. After it fully absorbs, I follow up with my moisturizer. This J-product product beats all of the overpriced HA serums in Sephora! Not only does it keep my skin hydrated, soft and plump for hours, but within 10-15 minutes of usage, the appearance of my enlarged pores are gone! This will also be a lifesaver when my skin becomes dry and sensitive during winter. This is a new constant in my routine. I got mine in an Asian beauty store but you can find the product on Amazon and YesStyle! It’s only 15 dollars!! Can’t wait to try more products from this brand! Happy Hydration! 💦
