How I Treated My Hormonal Acne

avatar
Skinsitive
I struggled with hormonal pustule acne for a long time, as well as pustules and whiteheads from oil overproduction. It was moderate to severe, covering my left and right cheeks. Three specific products helped to reduce my breakouts in frequency, coverage, redness, and the level of pain associated with the inflammation. PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Niacinamide Booster
is amazing. Just 4% Niacinamide has been shown by a couple studies to be as effective at reducing moderate acne as clindamycin- a topical antibiotic! I can attest to its acne fighting prowess, as I saw distinct reduction in not only the amount of acne I had, but also how intense it was- it was less painful and not nearly as red a few hours after application. Niacinamide normalizes pore lining and controls oil production so I saw immense improvement in whiteheads and pustules when using twice daily. But this prevented my oil-caused acne more than my hormonal acne, though it eased both. DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum
was the first product I used that gave me relief. I hadn’t known it, but my oil overproduction was largely in part from dehydrated skin. Since I used no moisturizer or serum, my skin produced extra oil after I cleansed. Incorporating B-Hydra replenished my skin with water, glycerin, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate (a form of HA), and sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer. I saw quick reduction in the number of whiteheads I developed! Using it before applying an exfoliant helps prevent dryness associated with peels. PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster
should be in nearly ever acne arsenal. It is antimicrobial and anti inflammatory to help fight acne, plus it lightens dark spots dramatically in my experience. Applying this in the AM shrinks pustules by nighttime and makes the area around the blemish much less red. I find this gives the quickest acne-minimizing results of all the products I’ve used. When treating acne, always make sure to eliminate possible irritants such as fragrance and essential oils, as well as drying alcohol. Acne can be a sign of inflammation and using gentle products can ease the pain associated with (as well as the prevalence of) acne tremendously. As well, I always recommend salicylic acid for treating acne, but I wanted to highlight these specific products because they’re not mentioned as often and they played a huge role in my acne journey.

Travel Essentials ✈️
Traveling with a carry-on means you can only bring the essentials with you, since you only get a quart bag! So what did I pack for a week ? 1. VANICREAM - Gentle Facial Cleanser A gentle, yet effective cleanser is a must-have for any routine. It takes off my layers of sunscreen after being out in the Florida sun, and leaves my skin feeling soft & clean! 2. CeraVe - CeraVe Moisturising Cream This is my go-to moisturizer for my dry skin. It’s thick and creamy. My skin feels soft, hydrated, and protected after using it. 3. Krave - The Beet Shield This is the best sunscreen that I’ve found! It’s so light yet hydrating. It’s not sticky or smelly. I re-apply every 2 hours when I’m out in the sun. 4. PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster I typically rotate the azelaic acid booster with my tretinoin at night, but since I’m going to be in the sun so much, I decided to leave the tretinoin at home! This product helps my acne and post-inflammatory erythema. 5. L'ANZA - Healing Moisture Tamanu Cream Shampoo I love this shampoo. I only wash my hair every week, and this stuff is effective yet gentle. My hair feels soft and clean after using it! 6. L'ANZA - Healing Moisture Kukui Nut Conditioner This conditioner provides weightless hydration. I would typically use the L'ANZA - Moi Moi Moisturizing Mist after, but I didn’t have room in my quart bad so I’ll be using a small amount of the conditioner as my leave-in! The silicone travel containers are from Amazon! They work amazing and allow me to bring any product I want! What are your travel essentials?

FULL Gentle Hydrating Skincare Routine
This has kind of been the theme of my entire Cherie page since its creation, but I’ve been needing to really hydrate my skin more since the weather’s become colder. Having rosacea means I always need to do extra research on the products I try. So after some experimenting, trying a LOT of new products, and deciding to stick to some old favorites, this is the routine I’ve come up with for myself: AM Routine Cleanser - Inkey Oat Cleansing Balm: A recent switch for the winter. Leaves my skin feeling nourished and hydrated, but doesn’t tackle my acne very effectively. Might switch back to my old cleanser (Cosrx Good Morning Gel) and just use this when my skin is feeling tight/for double cleansing. Toner - FAB Wild Oat Ultra Hydrating Toner: Another recent switch. This toner is so hydrating that I don’t need to use hydrating masks or overnight creams as frequently as I used to and it’s very calming. Serum - Peach & Lily’s Glass Skin Refining Serum: This is definitely worth the hype. My skin has been noticeably smooth since using it. Spot Treatment - TULA Go Away Acne: Uses benzoyl peroxide to work on acne which can interfere with rosacea, so I don’t use this on my cheeks but it works well in other areas. Not a repurchase for me. Eye Cream - Cetaphil Deep Hydration Refreshing Eye Serum: I said recently that eye cream doesn’t work for me, but I’m starting to get wrinkles under my eyes and thought it was important to kick up the hydration and attention. This one is quite gentle and pretty affordable. Moisturizer - CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion: Undefeated! If I need some extra hydration I’ll add a couple drops of Leo Oil and mix on my hand using my ring finger. Sunscreen - EltaMD SPF 46 on days with no makeup or ILIA Serum Skin Tint: Both are mineral sunscreens and unscented with protection in the 40s. PM Routine Cleanser - The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm: ...and I’ll double cleanse with my old Cosrx Good Morning Gel if I wore makeup that day. Toner - FAB Wild Oat Ultra Hydrating Toner Serum - Paula’s Choice CALM 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant or 10% Azelaic Acid Booster: I like to alternate between these two serums. The BHA (salicylic acid) targets pores and redness. The Azelaic Acid Boost contains salicylic acid too, but is more effective at targeting rosacea specifically. Eye Cream - Veriphy 20/20 Eye Cream: Received this as a gift and I actually really like it! Contains ingredients like peptides, niacinamide, and cucumber extract. But it’s wildly expensive and I won’t be able to repurchase. Moisturizer - CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion + Astrologiens Leo Oil: At night I always combine these two if I’m not using my Naturium Sleeping Cream (2 pumps + 2 drops). I have individual reviews on a number of these products, so if you’re interested in learning more about something feel free to check those posts out or just ask a question here :) Most of these products are generally rosacea and sensitive skin safe. I have type 1 rosacea for reference.

FINALLY! It’s mine!
This is one brand I’ve been stalking and I’ve finally got my hands on the highly raved, much talked about PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator I’d say what really draws me to this particular brand is its commitment to highly effective, well tested products. I feel they really listen to their customers and value their feedback. Well, imagine my surprise when in pops an email from a Paula’s Choice social media team member asking for my address to send me some products just for being me?!? I couldn’t respond fast enough with a...., “YES!” I’m not sure why I’ve been sleeping on this brand for so long. I follow so many diehard fans that swear and have visual proof of the changes their products have made. I have a feeling it’s all going to change after this... Just a little about PC if you haven’t heard of the brand (taken from the website) : Did you know that the founder, Paula was actually fired from her job working at a cosmetic counter for explaining to a customer what products could and couldn’t do for their skin? (This is what we need more of!! I was immediately drawn to the brand when I first heard about that!) Our Philosophy Science & Truth Highly Effective Formulary Excellence Non-irritating & Fragrance Free Multi-faceted Formulas Cruelty Free Packaged for Potency Environmentally Conscious On the website you can find Skincare Quizzes that can help you develop a Instant Routine or develop a more in-depth Routine at no cost! I’d probably start swapping out some of the products I currently use for similar items. For instance, I am looking for a replacement vitamin c so I’d trade mine out for theirs. Then the Niacinamide and Hyaluronic and so on. I’m definitely going to do the skincare quiz and see what’s recommended for me! Do you use any Paula’s Choice products? What’s your favorite? Please share! 😘 I’ll be back in a few weeks to tell you what I think of this exfoliator! ❤️🍒

Update!
This is my one month update on my skin. I have been using tretinoin cream every 3 nights & and the clindamycin phosphate lotion morning and night. I then decided to change my skincare routine to a Korean & Japanese skincare, and I’m very happy I made the choice. On December 3rd I went to get a customized facial and my esthetician told me I have acne that is clogged pores underneath my skin, so she did a deep extraction and in another few weeks I’m going to get one more done just to make sure they are all out. FARMACY - Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm I was using the dhc deep cleaning oil but it was too thick for me so I switch to this and it is light and not stripping, good for a oil cleanse or a first cleanse TATCHA - The Rice Wash Skin-Softening Cleanser this cleanser is a nice hydrating cleanser and it does not strip my skin at all Krave - Kale-Lalu-yAHA I just started using this exfoliant but I really like it and I seen results right after I used it Krave - Great Barrier Relief this serum is another I just started using but I love it, and it have a nice smell to it Krave - The Beet Shield this sunscreen does not leave a white cast on my face, and I don’t feel greasy after PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster this products is helping me get rid of my acne marks that I have from my facial PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Niacinamide Booster I just love this! This is helping with my acne and dark marks dear, klairs - Fundamental Water Gel Cream I have to use a light weight moisturizer so it won’t clog my pores

Products Getting Me Through Winter! ❄
Since I can remember I've had oily to combination skin, until this winter. It's been a rough one! My skin has been SO dry, and it's hard to keep up with it. Especially since I'm prone to acne and clogged pores, so I can't use a lot of heavy creams and pore clogging products. These I wouldn't be able to live without this winter! COSRX - Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence 🐌 I love this essence! This is a Korean product (Korean skin care will always be a hit). And it's made with Snail Mucin, weird right? This contains 96% snail mucin, which has incredible healing and antimicrobial properties. It promotes collagen production and aids in skin regeneration. And it's a top pick for dry skin types because of its amazing ability to hydrate. This has a jelly-like texture and I find myself ALWAYS reaching for this. Most of the claimed benefits do come with time. Another product I'm loving is the DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum 💧This is a serum that came in a DE kit and I really want the full size! This seriously feels like a cold drink of water for your skin. It's lightweight and spreads nicely. It not only has Sodium Hyaluronate, (which is like hyarulonic Acid on steroids) but also Pineapple Ceramide and provitamin B5, an amazing humectant. As well as a lentil/apple/watermelon complex. It's not crazy different from other Hyarulonic Acid serums I've tried, but it's great! I finally got to try the cult favorite DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Cream . And wow I'm glad I did! This cream does have a few possible pore clogging ingredients so I was afraid to use it, but It's helped my dryness so much! It feels sooo moisturizing and soothing. I love that this is a protein moisturizer that has peptides, growth factors, amino acids, and pygmy waterlily to improve your overall skin health. This is an amazing anti-aging and skin strengthening moisturizer. I love using this it's a great experience. I already reviewed this incredible product, the Glossier. - Balm Dotcom 👄 It's become a staple lip balm for me. It's extremely hydrating and packed with antioxidants and natural emollients. It has Castor Oil, Beeswax, and Lanolin to seal in moisture. It leaves my lips looking sooo hydrated and smooth. It's THE perfect lip balm and I am obsessed. Feel free to comment or ask any questions below 💗

drunk elephant review with fungal acne🐘💗
as someone with fungal acne, buying the same products can be reaaallyyy boring. so this is my review of drunk elephant as someone with fungal acne!! * disclaimer, NONE of these products are fungal acne safe!! use at your own risk * DRUNK ELEPHANT - Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser this cleansing balm doesn’t really emulsify when you activate it with water, leaving a really oily feeling😕 and doesn’t remove all my makeup DRUNK ELEPHANT - Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser Deluxe Sample this is a really nice gentle foaming cleanser... and thats pretty much it. DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum i love this serum! its a lovely gel serum that absorbs in quickly and is greak at oil control DRUNK ELEPHANT - C-Firma Vitamin C Day Serum this serum is a little tricky, i haven’t really noticed a difference in my skin in terms if brightness, i do have a bit of dark spots and they haven’t budged. not to mention this formulation is a rip off of the SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream this is a thicc moisturizer that surprisingly doesn’t leave my oily skin looking greasy af. its a good moisturizer for dry combo skin! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Cream this moisturizer feels exactly like the lala retro... its just 8 dollars more expensive DRUNK ELEPHANT - T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial Mask this mask burns so bad the first 20 seconds but then it settles down. i really havent seen a difference in my skin so DRUNK ELEPHANT - Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil ive only used this oil a few times but wow it really makes your skin feel super soft and dewy DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lippe Balm DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lippe Balm i love this lip balm but its 16 dollars and the claim are completely false! in conclusion, i wont be repurchasing anymore of drunk elephant products because in reality they are just good products... nothing too special ESPECIALLY for the price. they aslo didn’t want to provide information about the percentage of black employees during the Pull Up Or Shut Up movement so yeah. their aesthetic is cute but ive grown out of this phase 😀 like and save!! xo melanie

Exfoliants: Which One Should You Be Using?
Exfoliants: Which One Should You Be Using?
I have combination skin and suffer from hormonal acne as well as eczema. I utilize exfoliants for a variety of reasons, but my main goals are fading hyperpigmentation and improving skin texture, as well as preventing blemishes. With exfoliation, less is more. Frequent use of the same type, or too many types, of exfoliation can compromise the skin barrier, leading to redness, sensitivity, irritation, itchiness, dryness, flaking, increased breakouts... just, a lot of bad stuff. So I try not to use the same form of exfoliation successively- that is, if I use a BHA one day, I’ll wait a day before using it again. I choose different exfoliants depending on my goals: • Physical: My favourite physical exfoliant is DRUNK ELEPHANT - JuJu Exfoliating Bar since it’s the bamboo and charcoal granules are tiny and round, allowing for gentle sloughing away of dead skin cells. Physical exfoliation really helps with texture and can help unclog pores as well. This is one of the most easy-to-misuse forms of exfoliants, so be sure to not overscrub or overuse! • AHAs: Alpha hydroxy acids are synonymous with the word “peel”. They unglue dead skin cells, offering effective surface exfoliation that leads to smoother texture and a radiant glow. I personally don’t really care for most AHA products, as they’re too abrasive for my sensitive skin. I love PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Lotion but use it only 1-2 times per week, as I prefer... • BHAs: Salicylic acid is my favourite chemical exfoliant. Oil-soluble, it exfoliates more deeply and effectively than AHAs, clearing out pores yo reduce congestion and help prevent acne. It’s also more gentle than most AHAs. I love and recommend PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator for anyone that suffers from acne, enlarged pores, or blackheads, as well as uneven texture due to congestion. I usually use it 3-4 times per week, but have reduced to twice per week due to starting tretinoin. • Azelaic Acid: Azelaic acid is unique in that it’s not an AHA or a BHA. It’s actually an antioxidant already naturally present in the skin! It not only offers exfoliation similar to AHAs, but does so more gently and has stronger efficacy when it comes to fading dark spots. It’s also amazing at preventing blemishes, thanks to being antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. I recommend PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster for those struggling with acne, dark spots/PIH/hyperpigmentation, and uneven tone, it’s my absolute favourite when it comes to Azelaic Acid products due to the texture and gentleness!

You might already know that Su
You might already know that Sunday Riley UFO Facial Oil is my holy grail for treating any kind of acne: blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts, you name it! But then, I saw beaute defile use this Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster as a spot treatment in one of her Instastory. That's enough reason for me to give it a go!⁣ ⁣ So what is it?⁣ ⁣ Paula’s Choice Azelaic Acid Booster is a multi-action booster that suits all skin types and targets acne, hyper-pigmentation and uneven skin tone. It includes 10% concentration, but it also incorporates other ingredients like 0.5% Salicylic Acid and other brightening plant-based ingredients. Research has shown that a 10% concentration is gentle enough but still can improve many of the visible imperfections.⁣ ⁣ Azelaic acid is a naturally-occurring ingredient which is present in the skin. It can also be derived from grains like wheat and barley. It helps acne by regulating the production of keratinocytes (skin cells), which prevents them from building up and clogging your pores. It also supposed to help fading dark spots that acne leaves behind as it selectively target the hyperactive pigment-producing cells.⁣ ⁣ The formula is lightweight and has cream-gel consistency. It's smooth and not grainy, which means it's formulated properly. It spreads quite thinly and absorbs really well as I didn't have to worry about it pilling up. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve been using it for a month as a spot treatment at night. I apply it before my moisturizer, message it directly to the acne and let it sink in for few minutes until it doesn't feel tacky anymore. I also don't feel any sensation at all on my skin when I apply it.⁣ ⁣ I found this product helped to make active acne come to a head just in one night! And it seemed to work really well on deep painful cysts. They are much smaller, less painful, and they disappear in just a few days instead of a couple of weeks. It works the best when you put this on as soon as you feel the cyst rising. Here's the best part: no. flaky. skin! However, I didn't notice any improvement on my acne scars yet. The other great thing about this product is that it’s seriously affordable!

HOW I FIGHT ACNE WITH MY SKINCARE ROUTINE
HOW I FIGHT ACNE WITH MY SKINCARE ROUTINE
Acne comes from so many different reasons. But generally there are a few tricks that really help to prevent and treat them. SALICYLIC ACID: PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator Known for: combating whiteheads & blackheads by penetrating into the pores of the skin and unclogging them This exfoliating toner is amazing at preventing future breakouts because it’s so effective at unclogging pores and keeping them clear. My blackheads have also diminished so much since using this toner and I definitely can’t turn back. It’s quite strong so even I don’t use it every day and night. I’ll take it out only when I feel like my skin is getting congested (around 1-2x a week). AZELAIC ACID: PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster Known for: gently exfoliating the surface and refining texture of the skin This is a great booster to mix in with moisturizer whenever I feel like my skin is breaking out a lot and very congested. It’s not super strong especially mixed into the last step of my skincare routine but definitely helps to smooth texture. RETINOL: SKINCEUTICALS - Retinol 0.5 Retinol Night Cream Known for: speeding up our skin’s natural cell turnover to reveal newer and clearer skin I’ve used a retinol for more than a year now and I’ve seen the biggest improvement in my skin regarding breakouts and texture. I use it as the last step of my skincare routine every other day now and it’s just a great way to keep my skin healthy over the longterm. NIACINAMIDE: THE inkey LIST - Niacinamide Oil Control Serum Known for: helping to control oil production by renewing and restoring the surface of the skin against moisture loss Especially with living in a humid climate currently, my skin has been freaking out a lot. But this serum helps so much with promoting my skin to be balanced and self-regulating. My T-zone doesn’t get as oily but doesn’t feel dry either! SUNSCREEN: SKINCEUTICALS - Physical Fusion Uv Defense SPF 50 Okay sunscreen doesn’t DIRECTLY correlate with breakouts, although, there are definitely some that can cause breakouts for some people, mainly physical ones (so find one that doesn’t break you out)! This sunscreen doesn’t break me out and in fact helps with my skin durinf breakouts so much because it protects my skin from hyperpigmentation! The scarring that comes after a breakout can be just as annoying as the breakout itself but sunscreen helps so much to speed up the recovering and healing process! Do you have more tips for preventing breakouts to share?

Why niacinamide is my holy grail ingredient...
Why niacinamide is my holy grail ingredient...
Okay so this product is a new love for me. I need to delve into a story time for you guys... So last year I started using The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc serum after hearing rave reviews from people with cystic acne and pimples and it gave me CHEMICAL BURNS. Horrifying experience all around. So I ditched it, and swore off niacinamide forever... That is until I tried the Summer Fridays Jet Lag mask which has a high-ish concentration of niacinamide...and it didn’t break me out. So then after a while of only having niacinamide in my routine in that mask, I thought I should go with a higher quality niacinamide formula and ended up splurging on the Paula’s Choice 10% niacinamide booster: PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Niacinamide Booster My skin type is sensitive, rosacea acne-prone, and before I used this product I had insane “orange peel” skin texture where the majority of my pores live. Wait wait, back up: what does niacinamide even do???! Well, it reduces sebum production in the skin which in turn makes your pores appear smaller but this is usually only with the use of a BHA to keep your pores cleaned out. I use this product mixed in with a hyaluronic acid toner or serum immediately after cleansing both AM and PM daily. This is the product that has made a huge difference in my skin texture the most. I am still wondering what is different between the Ordinary’s serum and this one, but I am never looking back! I would recommend this if you’re looking to “treat yo self” on a formula and you have orange-peel textured skin. This is kind of pricey at $44 for .67oz but when you’re only using a few drops a day, it lasts a very long time. I have been using it for about a month now and I am barely 20% through my bottle. I have to rate it 5/5 stars for my experience with it!!

my love, my life
my love, my life
im OBSESSED with this. i bought the PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster a few months ago when i was really struggling with redness and a generally uneven skin tone. i initially couldn’t figure out how to use this without it having issues with some of my other skincare as i had been mixing it with my moisturizer. i find that it works better for me by itself, applied after serums and before my moisturizer this is meant to target uneven skin tone, any spots, and is meant to soothe irritation. it took about two months of consistent use before i noticed a real difference, but the redness in my cheeks has really evened out and now i only have flare ups sometimes rather than every single week. and when i’m having a breakout, i spot treat with this and it really works wonders this is $36 for 1 oz, and i really CANNOT recommend this enough

I didn’t know how much I neede
I didn’t know how much I needed this product in my life until I got it 😅 I have pretty clear skin as it is, but if I get a hormonal break out then it scars and says there forever. I was looking for something to work with my AHA/BHA serums to fix this. Since using this, I’ve breakouts to heal much quicker, and previous scars are slowly starting to disappear. It’s a light and fluffy cream that can be either used on its own or it can be mixed with another serum, oil and even a moisturizer. I would for sure recommend this product because of it proved effectiveness and the price is quite reasonable 😍PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster
