Don’t Make These Mistakes When Straightening Your Hair

Even if you have frizzy, unruly hair as I do, you can still achieve sleek, shiny hair with a few great tools and products in your arsenal. Learn from my mistakes to ensure your next ‘do is perfect! I’m giving you some of the best tips and tricks I've learned through my own hair journey.   My Hair Type   I have very dry, curly/wavy hair. I love wearing it down and straight! If I keep it curly, I usually have quite a bit of frizz, especially during the summer.   Mistakes I've Made Straightening hair before it’s completely dry. Don’t do it! It creates split ends and broken hair. Now, I make sure my hair is bone dry before I use any heat.   Forgoing heat protectant. I used to think they were unnecessary, boy was I wrong! I have significantly less damage now that I started using one.   Passing the iron over one section too many times. This creates more heat damage than necessary. Instead, I invested in a high-quality hair straightener that gets the job done in one pass.   Tools & Products I Use To Fix My Mistakes: 1. Ghd ‘classic styler’ hair straightener - This tool is a little pricey ($200). I do love it though, it heats up in 30 seconds and I can straighten my hair in one pass.   2. Amika heat protectant - This is actually heat protecting serum, which is pretty cool. It’s $25 and protects and adds shine to my hair. Bonus, it smells awesome.   3. Oplalex No. 5 & 6 - I love Olaplex, I can’t say that enough. Numbers 5 & 6 are the hair cream ($28) and hair oil ($28). I mix the two together in my palms and rub in through my ends when I’m done straightening. (I also use their shampoo & conditioner and love them both!)

Blow-Drying At Home: High Volume + Low Frizz
My thick yet fine hair naturally straddles the 2A/2B line, depending on a variety of factors: humidity level, days since last shampoo, products used, etc. But I love using the *amika: - Hair Blow Dryer Brush to add volume and tame my waves without straightening them, eliminating frizz and adding shine. I typically only heat-style on special occasions or when extending time between washes- here’s my no-wash day polished routine! 1. Separate: I separate my hair into three sections with a wide-tooth comb: crown, middle, nape. Crown is pulled into a small ponytail, then middle joins it using a clip. 2. Protect: Apply *amika: - Blockade Heat Protectant Serum liberally to the current layer- I run my fingers through the layer to help it soak in. 3. Prep: Spritz roots with amika: - Brooklyn Bombshell Blowout Spray xxxx 4. Style: Starting at the roots, I gently and slowly slide the brush, moving down that section of hair vertically. Repeat throughout the current layer until hair is to desired dryness. 5. Re-Section: I’m kind of Type A about things so I tie up the current layer of separated hair before letting down the next layer. It also helps keep from over-drying my hair and causing frizz! Repeat Steps 4-5 Until Hair Is Dry 6. Extra Moisture: Before my hair fully cools, I rub another pump of *amika: - Blockade Heat Protectant Serum between the tips of my fingers and focus on moisturizing/protecting the ends of my hair. I’ve noticed this helps my hair look more polished and extend the life of the hairstyle as far as frizz is concerned! 7. Smooth: Once my hair has cooled and the serum has soaked in, I finish everything off with a few sprays of *amika: - Silken Up Dry Conditioner and a thorough fluffing with my hands! I love how shiny and soft my hair is, perfectly smooth despite the serious volume and movement offered by the styler 💕 * PR Sample #CheriePartner

Day-to-Day Heat-Free Hair
I’ve been growing out my hair, so I especially don’t like using heat often- even with heat protection, I worry about long-term damage to my ends that will be noticeable for a while as I aim for waist-length tresses. So, here’s how I keep my hair frizz-free on my usual days where I’ll be hanging out inside, hitting the gym, and running errands! • *amika: - Vault Volor-Lock Leave-In Conditioner is like if detangler and a leave-in softening treatment had a baby. It doesn’t weigh down my hair but helps to keep my hair soft and touchable as it air-dries... plus makes combing much less of an annoyance despite the thickness of my hair! • *amika: - Silken Up Dry Conditioner is amazing even on days I’ve washed. Air-drying can leave my wavy hair a bit untamed and fluffy, so brushing after applying Silken Up keeps my hair frizz-free and silky, like a less drying version of hair spray! • *amika: - Blockade Heat Protectant Serum probably makes less sense on an air-dry day but I’ve fallen in love with it for how it tames split ends and increases shine when I take a very small amount over my hair with my palms. I use this throughout the day as well, particularly after a windy car ride, to scrunch my hair with my hands without creating a frizzy mess. #CheriePartner *PR Sample

Easy Hair Hacks to Look Great on Lazy Days
For days when you need to get in and out of the bathroom in record time, there’s not always the option to perfect curl your hair or do a fancy updo. If your straightener is already hot, don’t turn it off. Use it to add subtle ways to your hair before you head out the door. This trick gives freshly straightened hair a little more body and volume.   My hair type: I have super dry, frizzy hair. It’s naturally pretty curly but I do use heat often. I like straightening my hair but I don’t like how it looks when it lays flat. This little trick saves me a ton of time in the morning when my iron is already on.   Products I can’t live without: My ghd hair straightener is one of the best purchases I’ve made when it comes to my hair. It’s around $200 UDS but I use it all the time. Plus, it’s ceramic which is more gentle on people with finer hair like mine.   The Living Proof Humidity Shield ($30) works wonders for me in the summer. Once I finish my hair, I spray a bit of this to my ends and help keep the frizz at bay.   How to curl your hair with a flat iron: Step 1: Start with pre-straightened hair. If you have naturally straight stresses you can skip this step!   Step 2: Grab a 1-inch section of hair and wrap it around one side of the barrel of your flat iron.   Step 3: Twist the iron toward you while clamping - this is what makes the curl!   Step 4: Spray hairspray or a finishing spray of choice to make sure the look lasts. Bonus if you can even rock these curls tomorrow too. That’s the lazy girl’s ultimate dream!

blonde upkeep on Asian hair ✨
I went from virgin black hair at the roots to a light ashy blonde in one session! For most this might be extremely damaging. Luckily, I have an amazing stylist that was able to lift my hair without causing any major damage. That being said here are the products I’ve been loving since going blonde: amika: - Bust Your Brass Cool Blonde Shampoo If you have blonde hair it is a MUST to use purple shampoo! It tones down any brass tones. I love this one by Amika and use just a little dime size amount mixed with my every day shampoo. OLAPLEX - No. 3 Hair Perfector This is an amazing product for smoothing hair follicles while strengthening too. I love this product! However, I feel that it’s pretty spendy for the amount you get in one bottle. OLAPLEX - No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo OLAPLEX - No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner Love this shampoo and conditioner duo. I have naturally straight and frizzy hair, but this duo has helped smooth my hair entirely and help maintain the color. OLAPLEX - No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme The smell of this product is to die for 🤩 I use this after I shower and towel dry. A little bit goes a long way with this! BEACHWAVER Co. - Pro Rotating Curling Iron Love the beach waver, but dislike the price. You can achieve the same style of waves with a regular curler. However, I can style all of my hair in less than 15 min with this. It’s all about convenience in my opinion.

How to Fix Hair Static ❄️
I have thin, straight hair so when winter comes and I need my little hat, my hair goes wild! But why? ❄️ What is hair static? ❄️ Hair static is when your hair gains an electric charge. This can happen from friction and a change in humidity. This makes the hair pieces separate from each other and of course adds challenges for styling. Generally this happens more in the winter due to the low humidity. Here are some tips to prevent this! ✨Use a hair oil My favorite one is my Gisou. It is lightweight and made with honey so it is very hydrating and helps me with flyaways and general hair frizz even when it is summertime. This doesn’t leave hair heavy or sticky and I feel like this always makes my hair look and feel better. Not to mention it smells amazing! This comes in a mini and full size and is now available at Sephora. Also it’s so luxurious and the glass packaging is gorgeous. This has three sizes now, the mini is $25 and 0.7 oz so that’s probably a good place to start but I purchased the 1.7 oz for $46 and LOVE it. I will be purchasing the full size too. ✨You can buy anti-frizz sheets This is a new discovery for me and I haven’t tried them yet but rather than dryer sheets which are not meant for your hair, these sheets have things like coconut oil in them and are meant to be used on flyaways and the hair line to help with static. These can be found on Amazon! ✨Use hydrating hair products This could be your shampoo, conditioner and even the occasional hair mask but these will also help a lot with static. You’re going to want to avoid any drying products as well. I personally love Olaplex products because they repair hair from the inside out and smell so good 🍓 This is 8.5 oz and $28. They also have a cute holiday set out for $60 which has the shampoo, conditioner, hair mask and bond smoother. Also, when styling your hair, make sure to use a heat-protector which will lock in the moisture! gisou - Honey Infused Hair Oil OLAPLEX - No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner #CheriePartner

🌙Blended Balayage⭐️
🌙Blended Balayage⭐️
You know, not all balayages need to be low, I freehand painted this one up to her scalp! It gives her such a beautifully blended look. I kept lots of dark pieces in so when it grows out, it’d look natural! This client only comes in twice a year and she always tells me “all my friends this I get my hair done monthly because it grows out so beautifully and blended”. That’s a HUGE thing. Nowadays people don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars every month to take care of their hair, so this is a more affordable way to add some dimension and not break the bank! (Even though I would love to see you more than twice a year, please get regular haircuts so we can grow your hair out) I used a nice violet tone in her hair to give it extra light/icy pieces throughout! Toner doesn’t last forever, but this one is my go to!! Products used: OLAPLEX - No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo OLAPLEX - No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner OLAPLEX - No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme (a true life saver I might add) KEVIN.MURPHY - Body Mass KEVIN.MURPHY - Anti.Gravity Spray KEVIN.MURPHY - Bedroom.Hair KEVIN.MURPHY - Shimmer.Shine KEVIN.MURPHY - Smooth.Again ...yes I use tons of products but your hair feels and smells so amazing afterwards, you won’t want to wash your hair😂

Coarse Hair Is No Match For These Holy Grail Products
Coarse Hair Is No Match For These Holy Grail Products
Coarse hair can be ultra-difficult to keep shiny and smooth. It seems like coarse hair has a mind of its own!   My natural hair is quite curly and coarse, but it's also on the thinner side. If I don't use my holy grail hair care products, I look like a poodle. For lack of better words! The tricky thing with my hair is that while it needs a major boost of hydration, I tend to get oily roots quite fast because it's on the thinner side. Luckily, I've found some excellent products that combat my course dry strands without my roots looking like an oil slick. Products I can't live without:   1. OLAPLEX No.6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme $28 This is sulfates & paraben-free styling cream is such a hair-saver. It comes in a 3.3oz (recyclable) bottle and smells delicious. A little goes a long way; this stuff is potent. I use about a pea size amount and run it through damp hair. I use it on dry hair too after styling. I've been using it for around a year, and I'm already on my second bottle. I will repurchase it - no doubt about it! 2. OLAPLEX No.7 Bonding Oil $28 In my mind, OLAPLEX can do no wrong, so it's no wonder I'm obsessed with the bonding oil as well. The 1oz bottle comes in a small, easy to use bottle. I put about 3-4 drops in the palms of my hands and mix it with OLAPLEX No.6 and put in my dry hair. It makes my hair look shiny, feel softer, and it smells light & fresh. I'm still on my first bottle (a little goes a long way), but I know I'll be repurchasing when I finally run out.   I use this mixture (No.6 + No.7) about twice a week to keep my coarse hair feeling soft.

Ash me out
Ash me out
Have you really wanted to be a nice ash brown but it seems impossible to get to this color? Here’s why: Ash brown usually contains blues and purples to tone down yellow and orange pigments. The only way you can really get these tones to work and get extremely ashy is if you have a certain level of blonde, either prelightened or natural.  There are 10 levels of hair color: • 1- Black • 2-Darkest brown (the eye doesn’t notice the difference between level 2 and level 1, so hairstylists just mix a level 1 and 3 together) •3-Dark brown  •4- Medium Brown •5-Light Brown •6-Lightest brown •7-Darkest Blonde •8-Medium Blonde •9-Light Blonde  •10- Lightest Blonde/Platinum  There are also underlying pigments ghat each level of color brings, so if you lighten your hair and wonder why you got red or orange, this is why. As well as 10 levels of color, the 10 undertones that come with them are:   •Black- has blue tones ALWAYS  •Darkest brown- Blue and Violet tones •Dark Brown-Violet •Medium brown-Red and Violet •Light brown- Red and Orange •Lightest brown- Orange and Red •Darkest blonde-Orange •Medium blonde- Yellow and Orange •Light Blonde- Yellow •Lightest blonde- Pale yellow So now, knowing what colors turn certain tones when you lighten them to different levels, to get an ash brown you should probably be a level 8 and up! Levels with yellow tend to accept both blue and violet pigments and they turn to a beautiful “mushroom brown” color! It’s not easy to achieve but at least now you know the process in which us hairstylists should be working through with your haircolors(:  This client was just a simple toner over her platinum blonde hair because she wanted something to lighten up by the summer so she could lighten again with less damage! Products used: Olaplex shampoo OLAPLEX - No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo Olaplex conditionerOLAPLEX - No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner She has extremely porous hair from lightening from level 1 to level 10 so this shampoo and conditioner really help save her from anymore damage Amika’s The wizard detangling primeramika: - The Wizard Detangling Primer Kevin Murphy anti gravity spray (to hold in the curls) KEVIN.MURPHY - Anti.Gravity Spray

😳Why box dye is TERRIBLE for your hair
😳Why box dye is TERRIBLE for your hair
As some of you may know by now, I am a licensed cosmetologist. I see TONS of clients everyday and a large amount of my new clients are color corrections. What’s a color correction? Wells color correction is usually a pricey service that a hairstylist does once your hair is compromised from box dye...or maybe you gave yourself a hOMBRÈ. Yeah I called you out😂 This service is so pricey because it can take HOURS to fix this situation. This haircolor, took FIVE hours. She had three layers of red box dye in her hair and about two inches of regrowth that was lighter than the red. Trust me I wanted to cry when I saw it. This is every hairstylists worst nightmare. A client wanting to be blonde but their red. Lol not gonna happen. As you can see, there’s still some red, that’s where she really overlapped her box dyes. Box dyes are progressive dyes that really buildup on the hair. They have metallic salts that can build up and reeeaally dry out the hair....not fun. If I do a color correction over boxed hair I will seriously FORCE clients to get Olaplex added to the color and lightener. It’s soo damaged just in general and it’ll be worse after a huge chemical service like this one! Use these to prevent any further damage OLAPLEX - No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo OLAPLEX - No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner amika: - The Wizard Detangling Primer OLAPLEX - No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme KEVIN.MURPHY - Smooth.Again

✨DAMAGE FREE BLOWOUT W ONE PRODUCT✨
✨DAMAGE FREE BLOWOUT W ONE PRODUCT✨
Do you always blow out your curly or wavy hair? I do 🙋🏼‍♀️. I like to describe my hair as wavy. Not cute wavy but frizzy, cotton ball-texture wavy. Here is my quick fire way to blow dry your hair smooth and get it to last using ONLY ONE PRODUCT! Woo hoo! ✨THE PRODUCT✨ Aveda’s Smooth Infusion glossing straightener! You can get away with using only this because it helps straighten the hair, adds shine and protects the hair from heat damage/humidity using organic aloe, maize and guar bean. The consistency is somewhere between a gel and cream. It has an earthy, natural signature Aveda scent (think citrusy, floral) and retails for $26. ✨HOW I USE IT✨ I start with towel dried hair and put a *dime* size amount of the glossing straightener in my hand and work through my mids and ends. Make sure to evenly disperse this product throughout hair with your fingers, it is a little bit thicker. Also a little bit goes a long way, you can use too much so be careful and stick to the dime size! Rough dry your hair using fingers until hair is 60-70% dry making sure the airflow from your blow dryer is going down the hair shaft. No need for a brush yet! Section your hair using duck bill clips into 3 sections. Crown area, middle, and nape area. Use medium size round brush to smooth out hair section by section. Make sure you have tension while using the round brush, the tension will be what really helps to smooth out the hair. Make sure hair is 100% dry in each section before moving to the next Use a flat iron to touch anything up and you are done!

Haven Balayage Refresh
Haven Balayage Refresh
Refresher Time The Photos say it all  It was time for a refresh on this grown out balayage.  Balayage means to freehand paint, so if you tell your hairstylist you want a balayage, they may ask you questions on how you want it! Here my client wanted some brighter money pieces in the front to frame her face, but she didn’t want everything at the scalp because it tends to grow out in a harsh line! Balayage helps get rid of the harsh regrowth lines which helps your hair color last MUCH longer! 6months to a year longer!  Products used: Kevin Murphy Blonde.Angel purple shampoo and condish to brighten and tone her blonde and add shine! These products smell like fruit loops! The natural extracts such as bergamot and Lavender  Amika’s The Wizard- I swear this product smells so good and the packaging is adorable, it practically sells itself! This is a detangling primer that’s oil based so it’s super hydrating as you comb out those tangles! OYA’s Suede- This is a weightless styling cream that adds shine and softness. It’s relaxing spa water scent really makes you enjoy blow dry time. I then styled my client with some bouncy beach waves with a Babyliss Curling iron size 1 ¼, sprayed with some Kevin Murphy Bedroom.Hair texture spray and combed out for the finished look!
