Fight Acne with Retinoids and Retinol to GLOW ✨
🚨If you suffer from stubborn acne (like I have) you may want to consider adding OTC retinoids to your routine! 🔑Retinoids, a vitamin A derivative, are a key player in the skincare industry. Many studies have proven retinoids fight acne, promote collagen, reduce wrinkles and hyperpigmentation to give skin a healthy glow. The good news is now there are plenty of options for Rx strength one now available OTC! 💁🏻♀️I only mentioned products I’ve use and that work! Best OTC Rx Strength Adapalene 0.1% proactiv - Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment

🚫 DO NOT MIX 🚫
Retinol, vitamin C, chemical exfoliants. All amazing products that deliver great results! So you might be asking “what if I mix this with that and get the smooth, radiant skin I long for?” But let me tell ya, mixing these potent ingredients is a recipe for disaster! They play great with others (i.e. vitamin C and vitamin E or retinol and hyaluronic acid), but shouldn’t be used together for a couple of reasons. Vitamin C products have a very specific pH which allows them to work best, using a vitamin C based product with acidic ingredients like glycolic acid can alter its pH which can reduce the effectiveness of your products. Now mixing retinol and vitamin C or glycolic acid is just a big NO for me. These combo can lead to irritation, sensitivity, dryness and even flakiness. These three are amazing on their own or with complimentary products like I mentioned before ✨
Mix & match: retinol + HA 💦
Retinol can be quite drying and irritating when you’re first getting on it so it’s important to have the right products to prevent some of that dryness. My favorite to counteract the irritation from retinol is hyaluronic acid, I love to use an essence because it’s light enough so that the retinol can still penetrate through and helps skin retain moisture to help with retinol-induced dryness. This duo is amazing! The COSRX - Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence is just an incredible product that I’ve mentioned time and time again. It just works and lasts forever, I apply it after spritzing my face with the YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist with Reishi + Ashwagandha these three just work wonders together. Now the star of this trio is the SUNDAY RILEY - A+ High-Dose Retinol Serum I love it because even tho it isn’t prescription strength it’s effective and does wonder for skin. I think it’s great if you’re in your late 20’s and starting to get into preventive anti-aging skincare.

How to Use Retinoids Without Wrecking Your Skin
Retinoids are amazing. Whether you’re using adapalene (Differin) to treat acne, over-the-counter retinols to prevent signs of aging or correct hyperpigmentation, or plan to start tretinoin (Retin-A) for both, retinoids are exciting and have decades of research to back up their efficacy. But they can be a bit tricky- after all, almost anyone who turns to retinoids is warned of flaking, dryness, purging, redness, irritation... side effects galore. Except, it’s honestly pretty easy to avoid most of those. The purging is somewhat inevitable due to how retinoids work, but mixing retinol with an oil or applying an oil in the same routine can help stave off a lot (if not all) of the irritation, redness, flaking, and/or dryness. Oils help to fortify the skin barrier with fatty acids, as well as seal in the moisture from your hydrating serums and/or your moisturizer. I figured this tip out after accidentally forgetting to apply an oil (a usual part of my PM routine) with my tretinoin and immediately experienced flaking around my nose. Here are my favourite retinol+oil combos... The Ordinary - Retinol 1% in Squalane is my favourite over-the-counter retinol, melding two wonderful and simple ingredients: squalane and retinol. They offer three concentrations, beginning at 0.2%, then 0.5%, and finally 1%. I saw no irritation slowly making my way between the various concentrations, the squalane drying down to a lovely satin finish if you use in the AM before sunscreen. THE inkey LIST - Rosehip Oil applied after my Apostrophe Tretinoin has helped immensely- I didn’t notice any flaking/dryness until the night I forgot to apply it after my tret, which is impressive! I also haven’t experienced any redness or increased sensitivity, which I credit partly to this oil (also partly to my soothing serums). It’s already been helping with my acne and hyperpigmentation, as well as some tiny bumpy texture that has been persistently plaguing my forehead since before the beginning of my skincare journey years ago. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Virgin Marula Antioxidant Face Oil applied after DRUNK ELEPHANT - Virgin Marula Antioxidant Face Oil is a dream team combination for aging, dry skin- as well as a wonderful way to correct texture and tone! I can’t recommend this specific combination enough for helping with uneven texture and uneven tone. It lightened some of my dark spots and really helped smooth the orange peel texture on my chin, with the oil keeping a lot of the dryness at bay.
Worth it? Firm NO❌❌❌
It's not very often I write about skincare products that have disappointed me and that's because they aren't something I often come by. I’ve tried so many products from a number of brands.Technically, it’s not that they got terrible products. This Drunk Elephant is so popular these days. I like trying new things and did read a lot of comments both online and from my friends. Most of them times, I recommend products that I buy have always lived up to my expectations. I got these two products 1 month ago in Sephora during the Rough VIP promotion and was kinda disappointed about both of them. I was first attracted by the packaging, the whole product line. I like the design, packaging and colors. After reading all the positive reviews and awards, I was so excited to try it out and got these two hyped products from Sephora with 20% off. I had to say, it is way below my expectation. I had high hopes. My excitement, however, was short lived. Honestly, this drunk elephant product gets the work done. I do agree that my face feels softer after using it, but that’s about it. No glow, not clearer, no more even tone or texture. DRUNK ELEPHANT - T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial Mask It’s understandable that we are not expecting magic for every product. However this $80 facial mask definitely didn’t worth the price. You many find many good substitutes from drugstore below $15.I do not believe it exceeds the benefits of a facial-mask at a lower price point. Would not recommend if you have sensitive skin. I do feel a little burnt after using it and I have kinda thick skin layers and not many products in market would make me feel burning. DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni Retinol Cream For this retinol cream, Still unsure about the product. It make my skin super sensitive 3 days after I apply. I can’t use it more than once a week. Plus, its is pricy. I have tried so many retinol from drugstore to high end, this one is one of the expensive ones but most disappointing. I would not recommend because of the price and minor effect. Unfortunetely these two product from Drunk Elephant are way under my expectation. Considering the price to performance ratio, it’s hard to get in love with this hype brand. Let me know what you think!👇

“Medical-Grade” Skincare Is A Marketing Scheme
Just because it’s being sold in a dermatologist’s office or at a medical spa, doesn’t make it better. Doesn’t make it good. It means that that brand and that office have a commercial agreement. “Medical-grade” skincare is a hoax and a marketing scheme. There are two categories of skincare: over-the-counter and prescription. Period. Obagi Clinical, unless containing a prescription-only active (such as my Apostrophe tretinoin lotion), doesn’t have more effective actives than the Ordinary or any other brand. If they’re the same actives, in similar formulas, at the same concentration, at the same pH, the brand and “medical-grade” status is irrelevant. Some medications that were previously prescription-only, such as adapalene (Differin), could theoretically be marketed as medical-grade with more legitimacy to their claims, but it’s still such a vague category that it almost delegitimatizes a product in my eyes. There are some ingredients, such as Azelaic Acid, which are prescribed by dermatologists but are available at lower concentrations (azelaic acid specifically goes up to 10% for OTC) commercially. These are still not “medical-grade” actives. As stated previously, “medical-grade” is purely marketing. Prescription is not inherently better than OTC, but will often be more potent and therefore give faster and/or more noticeable results. But “medical-grade” doesn’t. It’s the same actives, at the same concentrations, that you can get from Paula’s Choice or The Inkey List, but with a higher price tag because crappy estheticians, dismissive dermatologists, and shady “medical-grade” companies are happy to make a buck off of unaware consumers. Save your “medical-grade” money for prescription-strength creams and filler down the road.
Best cleanser for my acne prone oily skin
I have washed my face with all types of Neutrogena cleansers that are specifically for acne prone oily skin, African black soaps by all kinds of brands, Kate Somerville’s Eradikate collections - basically all kinds of acne related cleansers you think of, I’ve tried them all. But all of them leave my face super dry after washing or cause my skin to breakout even more. And often times, my face is so oily the next morning I wake up. But after trying out the Perricone MD - The Jet Set from Macy’s, this cleanser is my favorite favorite product in this whole set. This cleanser, after the first use, gives me the softest and freshest skin. It doesn’t cause my face to feel dry at all and doesn’t cause that greasy feeling the next morning. You don’t need much of the product. How to use: Wet your face and hands. Put a dime sized amount in you hands and massage it into your face for at least a minute. I use a silicone face scrub to massage my face in an upward circular motion. This not only exfoliates my face but also makes sure the product is really cleaning in my pores. Rinse well. It can feel slippery on your face but as long as you don’t see suds then you are done. Pat dry with a towel. Do not rub your face with your towel. You can pull your skin and cause wrinkles and saggy skin. Use any kind of serum and moisturizer. I recommend Perricone MD - Vitamin C Ester Photo-Brightening Moisturizer SPF 30 because it has a whipped airy texture that makes you feel like you put on a cloud on your face. It’s also no thick so it won’t clog your pores. This product also lightens your dark spots. This is also part of their Jet Set collection. After the first use you can also feel how bouncy you skin is. After a month or so you can see your acne is generally reduced significantly. Use this with the DIFFERIN - Acne Treatment Gel and that’s my acne skin routine morning and night. A lot of people don’t like the smell of this but it smells like baby powder. I don’t mind the smell and it doesn’t linger.
Night Routine for GLOWING Skin
After 3 months, I perfected my routine for: ✨GLOWING SKIN✨ My concerns: mild acne, moderate cystic acne, large pores, redness, uneven skin tone, prevent aging proactiv - MD Essentials System Value Set Step 1 Cleanse and Rinse proactiv - Deep Cleansing Face Wash This wash is gentile and leaves my face feeling smooth and soft. It has micro exfoliating beads that remove impurities and help keep skin clear. Step 2 Toner proactiv - Balancing Toner I love this toner because I don’t feel dry at all like I usually do with toners. Leaves skin feeling clean and refreshed. Step 3 Daily Sheet Mask and Eye Mask #Well Skincare - Radiance Daily Sheet Mask[products]#[FiveStars] This is a great sheet mask that I use to every other night. It really helps boost my skin's hydration levels and counteract the mild drying effects from the retinoid I use. JAYJUN - Lavender Tea Eye Gel Patch Jar JAYJUN - Green Tea Eye Gel Patch Jar Perfect eye masks! I alternate between both depending on the day. The green tea helps my under eye puffiness and the lavender for anti-aging. Step 4 Serum (formerly my spot treatment step) #Apostrophe - Azelaic Acid Formula (Azelaic Acid 15% + Niacinamide 4%)[products]#[FiveStars] Although Proactiv MD cleared up most of my breakouts and reduced pore size, I still struggled with dark spots and jawline cystic acne. I knew I needed something a little stronger that was also compatible when using retinoids. Apostrophe’s formula reduced my dark post-acne marks and evened my skin tone and texture. It also has anti-aging properties. Pea-size amount recommended all over face. Step 5 Retinoid proactiv - Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment This is an Rx-strength retinoid available OTC! Perfect for people who want to treat acne and prevent aging. It takes 8-12 weeks to see acne clearing results. However I noticed my skin clearing up in about 4 weeks and my only breakouts became hormonal, cystic jawline acne. I didn’t want to use a stronger retinoid due to drying side effects, which did take some time for my skin the get use to. I LOVE this formula specifically; the texture is lightweight and dries quickly. Step 6 Eye Cream and Spot Treatment proactiv - Eye Brightening Serum This eye cream is packed with peptides, vitamins C and E. ORIGINS - Super Spot Remover Acne Treatment Gel It has it name for a reason. Noticeable improvement in pimple size within 24 hours! Better than drugstore spot treatment. Step 7 Moisturizer proactiv - Green Tea Moisturizer Soothing and non greasy! My skin feels hydrated and soft after use. Won’t clog pores and packed with botanicals! Step 8 Face oil eve hansen - Blue Tansy Skin Repair Face Oil A great face oil for acne prone skin! Leaves my skin feeling soothed and moisturized. Especially good for complexion repair.
good acne spot treatments :)
THE BODY SHOP - Jumbo Tea Tree Oil this really helped disinfect my acne and keep the bacteria out. i used this everyday and night and over time it helped stop my acne from being more red and helped the process in general. i highly recommend this because it was definitely worth every penny. i am on my fifth bottle now!! proactiv - Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment okay well, proactive as a brand did not help my skin at all and just made it dry and stripped. however, this certain product (adapalene gel 0.1%) helped, probably because of that ingredient. i used to have an adapalene gel CREAM but its results paled in comparison to this gel. i used this in combination with my tea tree oil on my chin and jaw area acne. these two also don’t have any white cast so it’s good for poc! Neutrogena - Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Spot Gel this i had mixed feelings about. it has definitely done miracles to my forehead and nose area by taking down pimples one by one! however, it is sensitive to sunlight (benzoyl peroxide) so i usually use it at night only. i am on my second tube right now since the first one was great. however when i first got the second tube, it caused my skin to get really red and the skin was peeling on the spots i put it on. i was very disappointed since the first one was so amazing. but after i started to put less on and very thin layers instead, it was fine. glad to say it’s still a holy grail product. make sure u are well moisturized since this one dries out the skin sometimes! ———————————————————————————— the red tube is called 999 anti-itch cream i believe. it does do very well with bug bites but it has helped with my acne too! no, my acne was not “itchy” but it helped sooth my acne so much and repair my skin on my acne-prone areas. a very nice product and one of my favorites. you can find it on google by searching up “999 cream for acne” to get more information. that’s it guys! i am definitely not a dermatologist or skin expert of any kind, these are just my finds on the journey of trial and error. i have combination skin leaning more towards oily skin. these products definitely won’t help everyone but these have helped me lots. this is also my first post on cherie, i am new to cherie and i hope to learn more about skincare on this app!!
(PLEASE GIVE ME TIPS) MY SKIN CARE JOURNEY🤩
My skin care journey starts have roughly 2 years ago and it’s kind of rocky. Around 2016-2017 I had perfect no blemishes no acne skin. I at the time didn’t think so so I started using Victoria’s Secret face masks with tons of fragrance and Saint Ives acne scrubs etc. I also used Neutrogena products for acne prone skin which really sensitized my skin to the point of really no return. I now have very sensitized acne prone combination skin. Later on I ended up going to the doctor because I got really bad rashes and breakouts and I started using benzol peroxide on my face which was prescribed by my doctor and it started sensitizing my skin overtime so when I got to summer I had a very very rare and bad reaction to it which left my skin with a horrible rash . I’ve tried to use adapalene ( a retinol) 1% on my face and it gave me weird reactions around my eyes and mouth so I had to stop using that also. Adapalene was also prescribed from my doctor. I didn’t realize that I can’t get a magic medicine from my doctor that will make all this acne go away I need to care for my skin by itself before I try any new medication. anyways after I discovered JC and Skin care by Hiram etc. I learned about a few new products and bought the cera v sa line. And I am starting to actually care for my skin with the right products. If you have any tips for very sensitive skin which is also acne prone please please please reach out to me. I’m looking for any serum’s or treatments to add to my routine thank you so much for reading my story have a great day!!

what worked for me
background: all my life i thought i had oily skin because i had acne but recently i’ve noticed my skin is dry and sensitive. i used Aveeno - Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser for 2 years. the cleanser did have some good ingredients that kept my cysts at bay but overall i found it very stripping and i still had acne. my doctor recommended a water based moisturizer so my mom picked up Neutrogena - Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel Moisturizer and i used it for 2 years as well. with a constant skincare routine i thought that my acne would settle down but it did not. i asked my friend whats she did to control her acne and she said that she popped her pimples with a hot needle so i tried it. to nobodies surprise, i got acne scars. i went back to my doctor and she prescribed a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream mixed with 0.3% adapalene (tactupump) and that cleared the whiteheads but it gave me very bad chemical burns all over my face. what worked for me cutting out fragrance was the best decision i’ve ever made!!! i change my pillowcase every night and only use a cleanser at night. i have a really bad habit of sleeping on my hands so i use hand sanitizer after i put my phone down for the night and i don’t touch anything else. products i use The Ordinary - Squalane Cleanser i use this as a cleansing balm to remove my makeup. super hydrating and non irritating YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Cleanser it’s not overly stripping and still has a little bit of a smell due to the natural ingredients but is non irritating The Ordinary - Retinol 0.2% in Squalane i alternate between retinol and chemical exfoliation every night. as i just introduced retinol into my skincare routine i’m starting with a lower percentage to build up a tolerance. The Ordinary - Lactic Acid 10% + HA i apply the product after i finish with my squalane cleanser and then wait 10 minutes for the acid to do its job then follow up with my superfood cleanser. it has done wonders for my acne scars and pores!! it’s great for my sensitive skin The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA i use this as a “primer” for my moisturizer. because this product is filled with humectants, it does a really good job of making sure that my moisturizer really penetrates my skin. because i live in a dry climate, using this as a moisturizer by itself wouldn’t be enough CeraVe - Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin SO GOOD. this is the only moisturizer that can make my skin not feel like it’s been grilled on a bbq. it offers amazing ingredients and protects the skins moisture barrier CeraVe - AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 it’s not very moisturizing and it’s hard to spread but it gives good sun protection. it has a little bit of a white cast but it’s not terrible
AHA, BHA, Retinoid - do we really need all these?
The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% I have been wanting to buy a skincare product with both AHA and BHA during the quarantine period. I was looking at Murad but it was sold out. :( Then I came across this product online and I didn’t hesitate to purchase it even though I am still unsure of how I feel about The Ordinary. This product turned out to be great. I love AHAs, BHAs, SAs, HAs, and all the other As because they’re here to make our skin look great. This specifically tingled a bit (I have sensitive skin so I’m pretty used to this feeling) but this is how you know that the product is working its wonders on your skin. I didn’t see any results until a couple of weeks into using it. My skin feels smoother and softer, and my complexion looks brighter now too. The Ordinary Retinoid 2% in Squalane I’ve been curious about retinoid after watching a couple of YouTube videos talking about it, saying how it did wonders to their skin. So I purchased this bottle to try. It has a pretty high amount of retinoid as other products contain about 0.2% only. I thought this would give me instant results. I apply this at night only cause it’s sensitive to the sun’s rays. You don’t want your face to be burning while wearing this. I apply just 3 drops of this potent solution on my ultra dry face. I double cleanse my face then I wait for 1 hour for it to be completely dry. I apply this, wait for another 25 mins, then apply my serums, moisturizer, and eye cream. I had some dry flaking skin falling out of my face, which means the product is working as it’s meant to get rid of the dry outer layer and reveal a younger layer of skin. I love this product! Definitely a must try!

I’ve Tried Murad Retinol Youth Renewal For A Week And Here’s What Happened
This is a best-seller this year but I've never used it before so I just bought a set (serum+cream+eye cream) and gave it a go. I've been using it for about a week as of now and here is my review. I have combination-oily skin. Murad - Retinol Youth Renewal Serum It looks thick, but it actually absorbs very easily after application and doesn't feel greasy at all. It feels very moisturizing instead and smells nice. I've also been using retinol for a year already so I didn't find it irritating at all! I couldn't see any immediate anti-aging effect, but I could feel my face revitalized. The only downside is its bulky packaging which means it doesn't come cheap! 🙃 Murad - Retinol Youth Renewal Night Cream The texture of this one feels a bit granular, so it's not very delicate and is relatively oily but it's still quite easy to apply. It feels a little oily on my face but not so much that my face shimmers. But I really dislike its smell. 😰 Murad - Retinol Youth Renewal Eye Serum This has a very thin texture and absorbs quickly. As an eye product with Retinol, I think it is worth a try. It does take a bit of time to see the effect of retinol on our skin, to me, the most important thing is to find the right product then use it consistently. 💪🏻💪🏻
They all fall down ✨
The feature product here the Murad - Retinol Youth Renewal Serum I’ve only gotten to try a mini of/I’ve never been able to try it consistently so my rating is more based on my expirence with the product - it was nothing to write home about and I didn’t to repurchase but it was a fine serum, a similar consistency to DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum The real star of this photo is the Dr.Lipp - Original Nipple Balm for Dry Skin Luscious Lips & Glossy Bits I got this in a Birchbox and was complexed lol. Then funny enough my mom got one in her Birchbox - I thankfully from my experience, I could tell her that she got the best multi-use balm out there! This helps seal moisture on my lips and then when I’m done applying it to my lips with my fingers I’ll use the remaining product on my cuticles 😍 this balm can go literally anywhere you have dry spots! It’s so great - definitely worth it and something I’ll probably always repurchase ❤️
AHA/BHA Night Serums Breakdown:
💗 Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos, Glycolic night serum: —I am a genuine fan of DE, purely because they will only include ingredients in their products that will directly benefit your skin. This serum has a clear gel-like texture with no fragrance. I use one pump and it glides easily onto the skin. This serum takes only a few seconds to absorb. I feel the slightest tingle for a couple seconds. I love being able to mix this with moisturizers or marula oil without worrying about messing with the effectiveness of the acids. This serum takes care of any incoming blemishes or texture overnight. 🌟 Farmacy Honeymoon Glow, AHA resurfacing night serum: —I’m so happy I gave this serum a go. I get an insane glow the morning after using this. This serum has a yellow color to it and a faint honey smell. I use about two full pumps of this serum (so I could run out quickly) because I find my skin drinks this up immediately. Two pumps covers my entire (small) face in a thin layer and as I begin to rub into the skin it starts a mild tingle. It tingles for maybe 2-3 mins. Very hydrating serum with no moisturizer required after my serum step! I wake up to a bright and glowy complexion. Sometimes this serum leaves my face with a little redness after application. 🌱 Sunday Riley Good Genes, all-in-one Lactic acid treatment: —This product not only introduced me to acids and chemical exfoliation, but opened up the entire skincare world. This product (out of the 3) definitely gives me the most intense tingle. I need a solid 1.5 pumps to cover my face, it smooths on very easily but has a thick milky cream texture with a strong lemon scent. I feel that this sits on top of the skin and feels decently heavy. GG takes maybe 15-20 mins to start to feel like it’s sinking in. It begins to tingle about 5 mins after applying to an itchy and tight sensation. This serum also leaves an intense pearlescent shine that almost makes my skin look greasy (very different than dewy). GG does include some sensitizing ingredients (silicones) causing clogged pores (for me). *Overall, I don’t use good genes in my current rotation due to the heaviness, greasiness, and sensitizing ingredients, also the most expensive so I do not see myself repurchasing. I like to use honeymoon glow about 2 times a week and love the glow I get from that but probably will not repurchase due to small amount that you get not lasting for very long (even though it’s the cheapest). I primarily stick with DE TLC Framboos to keep my acne away and get rid of all of my PIH and texture. This is one of the more expensive acid serums out there but for me it gives results that are worth it. As always, feel free to ask any questions you may have! Hope you enjoyed this mini breakdown💕
