How do you exfoliate? Serum or Toner?

Sometimes I feel like the more I learn about skincare, the more confused I get 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just finished reading Caroline Hirons new book “Skincare: the ultimate no nonsense guide”. I definitely recommend it. I’ll post soon some of my biggest take aways. But, the major thing it left me confused about is exfoliating and acids Caroline Hirons, the Queen of skincare, recommends acid toning twice a day. You should have 2-3 acid toners in your skincare line-up and rotate them, a stronger one followed by gentler, different kinds of acids. I was hoping her treatment section she would touch on acids and how she uses both, but she didn’t talk about acids as serums. Before my skincare journey I was using CLINIQUE - Clarifying Lotion 2 For Dry Combination Skin
I had no complaints. It was gentle. I wouldn’t really call it exfoliating. But, after reading the ingredients and seeing alcohol at the top and dyes, I’ve decided to ditch it. I was also using CLINIQUE - CLINIQUE Exfoliating Scrub
Again, no complaints. A gentle 7-day scrub. But, I learned that chemical exfoliation is better than physical, so I decided to stop using this everyday. I learned that adding AHA & BHA into your routine is important in your 30s. I tried SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment
And wow 🤩 it claims that you can notice smoother & brighter skin in 3mins. MINUTES! Not months or weeks. And it is true! I love this serum. I was using 1-2 times a week. Adding acids slowly to my routine. I never experienced any irritation. I also purchased The Ordinary - Lactic Acid 10% + HAto see how it compared to the Sunday Riley Good Genes, since it’s less than 10% the price. I’ll give a review after I’ve been using it at least a month. I’ve also tried Kate Somerville - Liquid ExfoliKate Triple Acid Resurfacing Treatment
This is a strong acid toner. More similar to the products that Caroline Hirons recommends. I don’t love it as much as the Sunday Riley. It smells strong. And I find it more irritating. I’ve used it every other day and that seems like too much. I do find it stings. Here’s my questions: How do you exfoliate? Serums? Or toners? Or both? To make matters more confusing, what about night creams with AHAs??? How often? I’ve read no more than twice a week. But products recommend daily. And Caroline Hirons is recommending twice a day (although alternating between gentle & strong). I think like the serums more than a strong toner. I will try a new gentler toner for twice daily use. And continue using a serum twice weekly in the evenings. I’d love to hear how you incorporate acids into your routine! Thanks 😊

Product Mentioned
Broke out my face terribly 😰
List of exfoliating products I tried in the past- that really broke me out and left acne scars for a while on my face. 🤭😓 These pictures are not my own- as those products were tossed out or returned ASAP. 1. BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - Lotion P50 - a patient of mine recommended this to me as “Jesus in the bottle.” I read many raving reviews and online posts about this product. I continued to use it for many months. I started implementing 1x a week and increased it to maybe 2x after a while. I had my husband use this with me- as I told him all the great reviews about this!! My skin was breaking out in places like never before. I was thinking it was purging, and didn’t want to stop. My husband started looking like a teenager boy with acne everywhere! We both stopped after a couple of months, and realized it was this product. I’m more educated these days about skin care, and I would never again keep using a product for this long. Unfortunately I kept using it and using it- thinking my skin would be flawless soon. 😂 2. DRUNK ELEPHANT - T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum this was another exfoliating product I tried about a year ago. I started off using slowly, 1x a week as I learned my lesson from Lotion P50. I got really bad acne on my cheeks. They were super painful and took forever to go away. It left me with scars for a while. My cheeks have not been breaking out since I was a teenager. The Sephora associate mentioned that my skin might be “purging”. I returned this and never looked back. 3. CLINIQUE - CLINIQUE Exfoliating Scrub - too drying for face! It gave me bumps on my forehead and pimples on my chin. It’s possible that my skin is too sensitive for these type of exfoliations!! I wanted to implement them to have the perfect routine, and exfoliate my skin as well. I find my skin looks clear when I do not use any exfoliants. Has anyone else experienced this? Any gentler options to try? Or should I give up on exfoliants 🤷‍♀️🤣

5 Minute 5 Product Make-up Routine
With an endless lockdown and having a baby in February I went months without wearing any make-up. It was an easy excuse. Im exhausted and Im not going anywhere, why bother 🤷🏻‍♀️ What I’ve learned is that taking care of my skin and finding a couple extra minutes to myself in the morning to put on some make-up has become my daily self-care. It’s about ME and makes me feel better. Here’s my quick 5 Minute 5 Product morning make-up routine: To start, nothing looks better than glowing skin. Here are a couple products I use as part of my skincare routine but go a long way to making my skin look better are: CLINIQUE - CLINIQUE Exfoliating Scrub A gentle daily scrub cream that polishes away dead skin cells for a smooth face SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment Skip a primer and use this treatment! The claim is that it gives you smoother, brighter skin in 3 minutes and let me tell you it’s true!! SUNDAY RILEY - C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil I love this face oil in the morning. I find it instantly brightens my face and gives me a sun kissed look. I use right before my bb cream. And I love the citrus smell as a little extra to perk me up. My Make-Up Routine: SEPHORA COLLECTION - Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer 🙋🏻‍♀️Tired mom over here. I need the extra help to cover up my dark circles. It’s lighter coverage than I would want but blends great and feels very light smashbox - Camera Ready BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 35 My multitasker, spf, moisturizer, sheer coverage Milk MAKEUP - Lip + Cheek A little on my cheeks and a little on my lips for a pop of colour and add a little life to my face SEPHORA COLLECTION - SEPHORA COLLECTION Brow Builder I love that this is super easy to use. Fills in my natural brows for a more finished look. CLINIQUE - High Impact Lash Elevating Mascara Last step a little mascara. I’ve received these in bonus bags for years. It’s a great everyday mascara. And you are done!

Critique a skincare newbie’s routine
Skins problems: I tend to get mild Rosacea on my lower cheeks and develop tons of blockheads in the creases of my nose, chin and between eyebrows. Other than that I have combination skin with an oily t-zone and normal to dry everywhere else. Where I’m at... So I kinda feel down the rabbit hole into skincare the other month and have tried using a morning routine as follows: GARNIER - Micellar Water Facial Cleanser Sensitive Skin The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (Made my skin so smooth really quickly, love this one) CLINIQUE - Dramatically Different Oil-Free Gel Neutrogena - Sheer Zinc Face Lotion SPF 50 (leaves a really bad white tint which I can’t seem to get rid of) And a nighttime routine as follows: CLINIQUE - CLINIQUE Liquid Facial Soap (leaves my skin a bit tight-feeling) PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator (I think it’s working I just can’t really tell) CLINIQUE - Clarifying Lotion 2 For Dry Combination Skin (a bit drying but I don’t want to waste the product) The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (Made my skin so smooth really quickly, love this one) CLINIQUE - Dramatically Different Oil-Free Gel Outcomes so far: My skin is overall more hydrated and smoother but I still find black dots in my problem areas. Plea for help I have seen improvements but I feel like I don’t quite know what I’m doing and could use some external input. Plz feel free to add any (and I mean any) tips or critique. Thank youuuuuuu

My interchange a.m. routine
I’m in love with my latest find the Body Shop’s Camomile Cleansing Butter. It feels absolutely amazing on my sensitive skin, although I am thinking of moving this to become my pm cleanser as I’d have more time to enjoy it! The Pixi Glow Tonic is cult for a reason. It would be on my skincare version of Desert Island Disks. Finally, the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum is perfect for days you’re running late. I love taking the time to layer my serums properly but it isn’t always possible - that’s where this product comes in. It’s too expensive for me to use every day but you can pick up a travel size version for only a few dollars.

Quick reviews on samples
To take a page from my friend @Mallorywho does #samplesaturday - sharing mine a day late 🤗 To purchase list (TPL)- YES or NO? alpyn beauty - PlantGenius Melt Moisturizer While I only got two 2 of this in 1 day, am & pm, I was able to determine it’s not for me. The scent was off-putting, a very natural scent which I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t linger. It’s also got some oils in it that can be irritating. At $60 this is a very pricey moisturizer. It claims the benefits of Bakuchiol (retinol alternative), Squalane and Vitamin C BUT you don’t see these ingredients until over half way through the ingredient list! TPL - NO REN CLEAN SKINCARE - Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm $49 I really liked this. I like to really moisturize up at night so I would add my nightly moisturizer and top off with a thin layer of this balm. I had no issues with a sticky mess and my hair (or pet hair) all over my face as I have had with a previous balm. One ⭐️ taken for fragrance. TPL - YES DIOR - Capture Dreamskin Care & Perfect A gorgeous primer/serum but incredibly overpriced at $120! Not as fragrant as some I’ve used before being it has the added fragrance but there are more reasonably priced options available, Tatcha’s primer even being half the price! TPL - NO TATCHA - The Silk Peony Melting Eye Cream $60 This eye cream is THICK! It’s more like a balm that is meant to melt into your skin. For me it was hard to spread around my eye area. I would try to warm up between my fingers first but just didn’t find it easy to work with. I’m not a fan of using fragrance around my eyes either. While I love Tatcha I have other eye creams I’d rather use. I also did not like product in this type of container, very small and not sanitary given the texture. TPL - NO SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment $120. I believe I’ve talked about this one before. It is such a small sample but a tiny (pea-size) amount is only needed. So I was able to determine this was non-irritating to my skin. It’s got a pretty decent ingredient list except for the fragrance. I prefer using Farmacy’s Honeymoon Glow with AHA & BHA at half the price. TPL - NO Murad - Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum $72. While I initially thought this was working for me I’ve realized it may have brightened some areas of skin but did not help fade or reduce my spots. A pretty simple serum to use with no issues in my routine. TPL - NO LANEIGE - Cream Skin Toner & Moisturizer $33 A HIGHLY popular toner that has a pretty simple ingredient list. I love a good hydrating toner and this hits the spot! It’s easy to transfer from my hands to my face and my skin drinks it up. I was able to add as many layers as I’d like without any side effects. Only downside is Laneige is not cruelty free. TPL - NO ❤️🍒

Weekly Treatment Schedule
I have a set, written down schedule for all my treatments for the month, because I have a really bad memory and find that if I don’t write stuff down I tend to over use or under use the products. This is how my routine was all through 2020, and have had no problem so far. I use The Ordinary - Retinol 0.5% in Squalane 3 times a week, on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Saturday’s. I’m pretty experienced when it comes to retinol, so I feel comfortable using it 3 times a week. This is also the only one of my schedules that isn’t set in stone. When my skin is feeling more sensitive, or is feeling very dry, I might only use this 2 times a week. I exfoliate using the YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner and the SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment 2 times a week on Tuesday’s and Sunday’s. I usually use these on the same days, but again, if my skin is feeling sensitive or dry, I will leave out the toner and just use the serum. I use The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution once a week for 10 minutes, I use this on Thursday’s and Friday’s are my resting day where I focus on repairing and hydrating my skin. 📍= product was sent to me for free

triple acid exfoliant for brighter, smooth skin
I was looking for The Ordinary Lactic Acid treatment but couldn’t find it in Sephora, and I was recommended the Kate Somerville - Liquid ExfoliKate Triple Acid Resurfacing Treatment instead, and I’m so glad I picked this up! Claims: A clinic-inspired leave-on exfoliating treatment gentle enough for daily use. Liquid ExfoliKate® is clinically tested safe for sensitive skin and improves the look of pores while smoothing skin texture and evening skin tone for radiant, younger-looking skin. I’ve been using this treatment 2-3 times a week for about a month and I’ve found that the bumps and closed comedones on my face have subsided. I feel like this treatment does a good job of removing dead skin cells, allowing my other treatments (Tretinoin and Azelaic Acid) to penetrate my skin even more. My skin has become significantly smoother and brighter since starting to use this. Note: I have been using my Tretinoin and Azelaic Acid treatments every day for about 6 months so my skin is very used to it and not sensitized, thus allowing me to use the exfoliant and those treatments together in one routine. If you are new to exfoliants or retinoids or any other actives, exercise extreme caution because your skin could become really sensitized after using these. You should only use these actives together if your skin has become accustomed to the actives. Sometimes I wake up with some dead skin coming off my face, and I just wipe it off with a wet washcloth. While this is a triple acid exfoliating treatment, I find it to be pretty mild on my skin. It doesn’t irritate my skin, but is still effective at creating a smooth surface. Ingredients: 10% Triple Acid Blend (Glycolic, Malic, and Lactic Acids) Phytic Acid with Pumpkin, Papaya, and Pineapple Enzymes Peptides, Honey, and Tea Extract I love the ingredient list because it has different AHAs blended with soothing ingredients! Application: The company suggests you apply this as a toner by saturating a cotton pad and applying before your moisturizer. You can certainly do it this way, but I usually like using it like a serum by using a dropper and applying it in drops directly on my face and then rubbing it in. It does have a pretty runny and thin consistency, so just be careful not to let it slip off your face before rubbing it in when using a dropper. Both application techniques work just fine! I usually only use this at night so as to avoid extra sensitization to the sun. I apply this in conjunction with my hyaluronic acid and niacinamide serums. Overall, this is a great addition to your skincare routine if you’re looking for a gentle yet effective exfoliating treatment! Let me know your thoughts!

This week it’s Sunday Riley’s A+ High Dose Retinoid Serum This is actually the only retinoid/retinol product that I use regularly. And it’s been extremely effective. 👍🏾 My main use for this product is the treatment of ingrown hairs on my chin and neck since retinoids help with clearing away dead skin cells. I had a persistent ingrown that simply would not budge and this worked where other products failed. 💯 This serum is lightweight and absorbs easily. I’ve experience no irritation but I do keep the amount I apply to a minimum. I cannot recommend this product enough if you suffer from similar issues. It’s been a lifesaver! 🙌🏾

I need to purchase it ASAP! It’s super hydrating and it feels AMAZING! 5- Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate- I can’t live without it! I always finish my skincare routine with it. It seals everything. . P.S.- I don’t use Good Genes on the same day I use daily peel. That’s too harsh. 😉

This thing you guys 😍 I can’t stress enough on this!! Well this is my absolute favorite product of all time! I wish I could do this morning and evening, but I don’t! The black tea kombucha facial essence is one of the best essence treatment (being instantly effective) & a must have in shelf kinda thing. I'm using this this essence in my night time routine, followed by my everyday routine and my skin is so plumped, soft & Luminous. I can literally feel my skin bounce. ~This essence is also an anti pollution treatment that creates a barrier between the skin and any harmful effects of pollution and free radicals indoor & outdoor. ~Evens out the appearance of by minimizing the look of pores and fine lines ✨ The ingredients such as: 🍂The kombucha tea: Rich in antioxidants. 💧Hyaluronic acid: provides necessary hydration for supple skin. 🍊Mandarin peel extract: helps promote an even complexion. 🥜Kigelia africana fruit extract: helps smooth the appearance of skin texture. (Consists of lots of other ingredients please refer to the products website) I don’t expect a facial essence to do so much unless it’s pricy like this one 😛 I love it tho 💕

Sunday Riley’s A+ High-Dose Retinol Serum is a great serum. It has a very lightweight consistency that absorbs easily. This serum is designed to fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, congested pores and help UV damaged skin. The reason I’m giving it 3/5 stars is due to the high cost vs results. My skin looks nice when I use this, but did not see a difference in fine lines or pores. I’ve used less expensive retinol/retinoid serums that I’ve seen superior results from. This product is $85 for 30ml so I think it’s slightly overpriced.

My most used and loved essence. I rub few drops in my palm and pat it on my face. It goes on smoothly and gets absorbed so fast. After continued use, I see my skin got brighter and felt more evened out. This one acts as a perfect base to layer on other skincare products. It also has anti pollution and anti aging ingredients. fresh - Kombucha Antioxidant Facial Treatment Essence
