How is a dark spot formed?

How is a dark spot formed?

avatar
Mallory
Hyperpigmentation (or dark spots) is something everyone deals with. It can happen at any time to anyone. The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is sun damage but it can also occur from stress, inflammation, acne, or health concerns in general. To understand how a dark spot is formed you have to understand a few terms. Melanocytes are melanin producing cells that are in the bottom layer (you have 5) of your skin’s epidermis (the outer layer above the dermis). Whatever the cause is it triggers hormones to stimulate the melanocyte. This causes the melanocyte to product melanin (pigment). As the melanin travels up the 5 layers of your epidermis it will form a melanin cap as it deposits into the outermost layer. This deposit is what we consider a dark spot. How do we fix this? There are a few ways we can prevent or fix this. Firstly, WEAR SUNSCREEN!!! Protection is key in skincare. Currently I’m using the KINSHIP - Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturzing Sunscreen Zinc Oxide SPF 32
which is a gel probiotic sunscreen. It has a peach tint that goes clear once applied. This mineral sunscreen doesn’t feel heavy or give a white caste making it perfect for all skin tones. It also gives the skin a little bit of a natural glow. With sun damage being the major cause of hyperpigmentation this will be your key player in prevention. Another route to go is exfoliation. I use the The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution
once a week to help shed that outer layer of dead skin. I have other reviews where I go more in depth into this product but for the purpose of this post AHAs will help exfoliate the outer layer of skin which helps to lighten the pigment deposit. This mask is very strong so I would only use it once a week. It should tingle but it shouldn’t burn. Please only follow up with hydrating and sensitive friendly ingredients as your face will be more sensitive after use. And finally you can use skin brightening products. Currently I’m using the GOOD MOLECULES - Discoloration Correcting Serum
. This serum highlights a form of tranexamic acid and 4% niacinamide to help brighten the appearance of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and sun damage. This serum has a little bit of a slip compared to most others I’ve used but once worked into the skin it absorbs nicely. I’ve seen huge results in the brightening of post acne hyperpigmentation. Another amazing option for this is The Ordinary - Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
. This has a cream formula that can be used all over the face or concentrated in certain areas. This this acid helps the skin renew itself more quickly reducing blemish formation. It also kills the bacteria that cause acne. It also contains brightening agents to help with pigmentation. Personally, I think all three should be incorporated into a routine to treat unwanted pigmentation spots but sunscreen and exfoliation are the most important.

Oh look, another review of The Ordinary peel 😂
Let’s talk The Ordinary’s “viral” peel. I bought this in April after seeing KJB post about it, and apparently it’s also gone viral on TikTok but I’m old so I didn’t see it there 🤷🏼‍♀️⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬: The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution Don’t be confused by the name — it isn’t one of those masks that dries and you literally physically peel off from your face. This type of “peel” is actually chemical. According to their website, it is “An exfoliating solution to help fight visible blemishes and improve the look of skin texture and radiance.”⁣ ⁣ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨: Apply to a 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧, 𝐝𝐫𝐲 face. Leave on for UP TO 10 minutes. My skin is pretty tolerant, and can do the full 10. Some people say the tingling or burning is too strong to leave on that long — I don’t think it should “burn” but a nice tingle lets you know it’s working. Use maximum twice/week (I use mine every Friday without fail!). I also follow up with the PTR Rose Stem Cell mask each time to lock in hydration. ⁣ ⁣ After 10 minutes, my skin always feels SO soft and smooth. My sister said it helped immensely with her eczema after just one use. I think it might be actual magic trapped in a bottle. ⁣ ⁣ This little gem is $7.20 for a 1oz bottle. According to my skincare app, I’ve used it 35 times since I purchased it in mid-April. I also let my sister use it (maybe twice?) and spilled a whole bunch of it when I knocked it over once...and it STILL isn’t gone. I just re-ordered it so I don’t run out, but I really can’t believe how many uses I’ve gotten out of one bottle. This product is more than worth it. Even if you decide it isn’t for you after trying it, you’ve only spent about $7. I’ve (shamefully) ordered drinks from Starbucks that cost more than that.⁣ ⁣ Oh and please use sunscreen (every day, but ESPECIALLY) after using this due to the AHA/BHA!

Routine help!!
I used to have really nice skin but when I moved to Canada last year, my skin immediately broke out and has just been becoming worse and worse. I have tried so many products and none of them seemed to work. This is my recent routine and I thought these products would help but it’s still not getting better (in fact I’m getting more breakouts) CeraVe - Renewing SA Cleanser For Normal Skin PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% CeraVe - Daily Moisturizing Lotion For Normal To Dry Skin I use these products every day and night. I also use The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solutionevery Tuesday and Friday (I don’t use the paulas choice liquid exfoliator on these days) AZTEC SECRET - Indian Healing ClayI only use this once a month.

What is Rosacea?
Hey Beauty’s 🙋🏽‍♀️ I wanted to highlight Rosacea which affects 16 million Americans and 415 million people around the World 🌎 Mayo Clinic say, it’s a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, other skin problems or natural ruddiness. Health line say, the cause of rosacea is still unknown, and there is no cure although Mayo Clinic list a number of reasons (highlighted in my infographic) that cause the condition. 🧐 Topical Treatment: An article in Australian Prescriber says, treatment starts with general measures which include gentle skin cleansing, photoprotection and avoidance of exacerbating factors such as changes in temperature, ultraviolet light, stress, alcohol and some foods. Specific topical treatments include: 🧚‍♀️ Metronidazole, Rozex Metronidazol Gel is a topical antibiotic gel for treatment of rosacea 🧚‍♀️ Azelaic acid, a superstar ingredient with antibacterial, skin cell regulating, anti inflammatory and is especially useful for acne-prone or rosacea-prone skin types (in concentration 10% and 🆙 The Ordinary - Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% has the right strength of Azelaic acid. 😄 🧚‍♀️ Laser therapy may also be beneficial 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 If you have any questions just leave me a comment below. Have a wonderful day! Jade 😃

My favorite serums for every need!
Ones for skin texture. Ones for firming/hydration. Ones for discoloration. I have acne combo skin! One of my biggest difficulties is acne and the marks that they leave behind! NATURIUM - Niacinamide Serum 12% Plus Zinc 2% is for skin texture and controlling oil/sebum, and pore reducing. It also can have some moisturizing benefits so I like to use when I use my rerun-A. The texture is gel-like and it isn’t sticky at all. It’s pretty smooth and creamy. I like using this as an active, right after my toner. primera - Wild Seed Firming Serum is new to me but so far I love it so much! It is creamy and almost milky but it goes on the skin so well and gives a really pretty glow to the skin. It has a ton of skin loving ingredients and is packed with nutrients. I use this as an extra hydration step and I also put it under my eyes to help with fine lines. It is supposed to help with firming the skin and boosting elasticity. GOOD MOLECULES - Discoloration Correcting Serum is a holy grail already! It’s a newer product to the brand but this stuff works SO good. It is tranexamic acid (cetyl tranexamate mesylate) and 4% niacinamide, this lightweight serum improves the appearance of age spots, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage. I mainly use this at night and if my skin is irritated I will use it as a spot treatment on my hyperpigmentation spots. #cheriepartner

My favorite serums ! AM & PM
The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 My favorite serum is hyaluronic acid . Why ? It alleviates dry skin . Reduces the size of your pores . Provides additional hydration After cleansing I apply this serum first . The ordinary is my favorite brand because of its effectiveness and price. The most important factor in choosing a serum is knowing what I need the most and knowing my skin type . I apply this in the am and the pm. GOOD MOLECULES - Discoloration Correcting Serum Main ingredient : Also known as vitamin B3 and nicotinamide, niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin that works with the natural substances in your skin to help visibly minimize enlarged pores, tighten lax pores, improve uneven skin tone, soften fine lines and wrinkles, diminish dullness, and strengthen a weakened surface I’ve been using this for about a month and a half and I see improvements . This goes on after my The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 . I use this in the am and pm everyday . The price of this product is only 12 bucks . Formulated with an advanced form of tranexamic acid (cetyl tranexamate mesylate) and 4% niacinamide. This lightweight serum improves the appearance of age spots, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage. I’ve seen major improvements . Comment a heart it you would like to see my improvements . Slowly. Last but not least I love pixi - Rose Oil Blend because it’s super moisturizing . Vitamin e is a great because it helps support the immune system, cell function, and skin health. It's an antioxidant, making it effective at combating the effects of free radicals produced by the metabolism of food and toxins in the environment. Vitamin E may be beneficial at reducing UV damage to skin. Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which are integral for tissue and cell regeneration in the skin. It's no wonder that the oil has long been used as a folk remedy for wound healing, as well as the reduction of scars and fine lines. Antioxidants are great for people with hyperpigmentation . It treats the damaged skin cells . This is the last step in my serum regimen and I use it at least four times a week .

Winter Routine for DRY Skin
My cheeks have been SO dry lately. It’s been a struggle to keep my sensitive combo skin hydrated with the change in weather. I’ve thus made a couple swaps from my summer routine to keep my skin moisturized and not flakey. 🌬I swapped my trusty jojoba oil in the morning for a light application of Dr. Jart+ - Ceramidin Cream (I use about half the amount I use at night- just enough to get an even layer) 🌬I went back the old CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser from their new CeraVe - Hydrating Cream-To-Foam Cleanser . Although I like the new version better, I just need every scrap of hydration I can get right now. 🌬Lastly, I recently started applying a thin layer of Aquaphor - Aquaphor Healing Ointment over my cheeks at night (post on this coming soon!) In short, my routine is now: 🌤 rinse, hydrating toner, moisturizer, spf 🌙 double cleanse, moisturizer*, ointment as needed *I swap my Ceramidin for MAELOVE - Night Renewer 2x / week

🕷🕯Friday the 13th & feelin cute!🕯🕷
I try not to be superstitious about a day or a number, but I still find myself thinking about it🤔 🍂It’s really feeling like Fall! Had the first snow of the season the other day, but now it’s just raining a lot🌧 Before I took better care of my skin, I rarely took selfies without makeup on, I just didn’t feel cute. Now I feel cute with a glowing face full of skincare & have kinda ditched makeup (which personally, also helped my skin tremendously!) I felt extra cute today & just wanted to chill & get cozy, but we have guests right now, so I decided to throw on my fav mascara & gloss for fun. ➡️ Everything on my skin, lashes & lips is in the next photo. GIVENCHY - Phenomen’eyes Mascara Is my ultimate favorite mascara! I truly miss the brown shade this used to come in, but that’s just me, loved it for my lashes (& brows when I was lazy) The brown shade was not great for every look, but it was so soft & natural looking. This black shade is your basic, classic black, I’m just so in love with the formula & applicator. 🏰The comb reminds me of that medieval spikey ball weapon thing. Love it. It makes it super easy for me to control where I’m applying, & keep it light, feathery & clump-free (my personal preference for an everyday mascara look) I love how i can just sort of “kiss” my lashes with this product, especially the bottom line, so effectively. ✔️You can definitely get a more dramatic effect with this mascara if that’s what you’re going for! 🖤The thing I love most is how the formula really holds my curl throughout the day! My tricks for lashes is start with a great curler. This will be different for everyone, because we all have different eye shapes. My eyes are not deep set at all. My lashes aren’t particularly long, but my lashes sometimes graze the inside of sunglasses for instance... My perfect eyelash curler has a less pronounced curve than most standard American market curlers, which helps get me the perfect curl with no pinching at all! 🛍I also use a FREE spoolie (yes I’m that bitch at Sephora) to comb out any clumps. SHISEIDO - Shiseido Eyelash Curler I also always have these on hand, so I’m never with a cracked/split one, save your eyes from injury & hidden bacteria: SHISEIDO - SHISEIDO Eyelash Curler Pad I wish Sephora carried these! They’re only $6/2 pack-but annoying/wasteful to buy without free shipping-unless I buy tons lol. *i always curl BEFORE mascara! As the mascara is kinda drying I use clean fingers to sort of push them up to curl a bit more & have it hold! ⚠️You may be tempted to use a curler at some point AFTER mascara. Though I did it 1,000x without incident, the one time I pulled out over half my top line was it for me! Proceed with caution. DIOR - Lip Glow Oil So moisturizing & not sticky! Lips look alive & plump!💕 NEST FRAGRANCES - Bamboo Candle 🕯Jasmine/Amber vibes, warm, perfect for Fall🍂

Finally a brightening serum for my skin!
Finally a brightening serum for my skin!
Okay so I know it’s WAY too early for me to see the signs as it’s barely been a day. Maybe it’s a placebo effect but I’m already loving this serum SO MUCH! The issue with a lot of brightening serums I’ve used (and I’ve used alotttttt) is that my skin tends to shift in overall condition. By that I mean, I’ll have clear skin with zero breakouts and although the serums I’ve used have worked to lighten my pigmentation, I notice I tend to breakout while using them! I go from clear to MORE breakouts and then the hyperpigmentation cycle begins again! Here’s an insert from their website: About Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum! Improve the appearance of skin discoloration and uneven skin tone with Discoloration Correcting Serum. Formulated with an advanced form of tranexamic acid (cetyl tranexamate mesylate) and 4% niacinamide, this lightweight serum improves the appearance of age spots, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage. Good molecules has really great products and the price point is super affordable! This serum is $12! I’ll be posting an update in 30 days to talk about how well it’s worked, but so far so good 😍 GOOD MOLECULES - Discoloration Correcting Serum

Heard of Good Molecules yet? Hoping you have jumped on the bandwagon because this brand is so good for so many different reasons! Great line of affordable skincare and the brand really cares about their customers and how they get their ingredients and such. So far, my favorite serum is the GOOD MOLECULES - Discoloration Correcting Serum This is powerhouse serum that focuses on fading dark spots/pigmentation, refining pores and texture, and hydrating the skin! + Tranexamic Acid works to even the skin tone. + Niacinamide helps improve enlarged pores, dull skin, and texture. + hyaluronic acid keeps hydration locked in. + thicker consistency almost gel like serum + little goes a long way + results are slow, but will show! + $12! This has helped my acne scars and my pores the most! It has taken a little over a month to see results for me.

Turmeric Magic!
Turmeric Magic!
I am in love with this mask from cocokind. Turmeric is such a beneficial ingredient. We use it in our home all the time. Turmeric is known for its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It also helps with inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and anti-aging. This is a five-ingredient mask:- sunflower seed oil, beeswax, turmeric root powder, ginger root powder, and tea tree oil. Simple yet so effective. My skin instantly feels so soft and glowy after using this mask. This has helped me with my post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It really helps to even out the skin tone and balance it. The first time I used it I was quite scared of it leaving yellow stains hahaha but no it doesn’t stain your face. Also do not wash it with water as I did in my first use🤣 The instruction clearly states to use a damp cotton pad. It is safe to use it every day and I have been using this mask a lot lately and I absolutely enjoy it.

Sun Spots? Try This☀️💦
Sun Spots? Try This☀️💦
GOOD MOLECULES - Discoloration Correcting Serum I have combo acne prone skin and easy to get sun spots and scars😭 I love how they show ingredients down to 0.1% on packaging and on website. Also the glass bottle is tinted & great for skincare products. I used up one bottle before this one. I do have acne scars & discoloration on my chin & cheeks. After 2-3 weeks pores looked better & some dark spots faded👍 Formula is gentle and it doesn’t irritate my skin. It soothes into skin fairly quickly with little sticky feeling. It layers beautifully with most moisturizers and does not pill👏🏻 #CherieCreator

SNAIL MUCIN?!
SNAIL MUCIN?!
So when I first heard of this, I was like why the hell would that on my face? 🤣 Like umm.. this is weird. COSRX - Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence But I kept an open mind and I have no regrets. Snail mucin benefits; > Prevents and reduces existing scarring > Improves collagen production > Improves skin hydration > Reduces premature aging due to UV exposure So when I applied it, it felt really slimy at first but when you begin to rub it in.. it feels sooooo luxurious and very light. My skin also looked hydrated and plump! I seen a significant improvement in my dark spots & my skin overall! Oh! & and it didn’t break my sensitive skin out!

#1 NATURIUM PRODUCT ALERT 🧖‍♀️✨
#1 NATURIUM PRODUCT ALERT 🧖‍♀️✨
NATURIUM - Niacinamide Serum 12% Plus Zinc 2% $16!!! 🤍I lOVE THIS PRODUCT! Naturium Niacinamide 12% + Zinc PCA 2% is a must! I use this product morning and night after cleansing and after BHA/AHA. I haven’t experienced any type of sensitivity using this product. It spreads nicely onto the skin and leaves a soft, non-greasy feeling! 🤍Niacinamide is great for all skin types including sensitive skin (no fragrance in this product)! It helps with reducing the look of enlarged pores, refining uneven texture, and balancing oil production. The Zinc PCA 2% component helps reduce excess shine from oil. The formula also contains hyaluronic acid to draw in moisture to the skin and prevents transepidermal water loss. Naturium also offers another Niacinamide product in cream form, I just prefer the serum. 🤍This product has really helped to reduce the appearance of my PORES! My mom has also been using it and has seen INCREDIBLE improvement in her hyperpigmentation and melasma! I’ve seen it has helped give me a more even skin tone and reduced dark spots. ♥️CONCLUSION. I am DEFINITELY REPURCHASING this product, although at some point I’d definitely like to try the Paula’s Choice niacinamide as well. But this product is such good quality and is only $16 so it’s definitely hard to beat. I think everyone should incorporate Niacinamide into their routine! It just offers so many benefits and this formulation has been gentle and effective enough for me to use twice daily 😌🥰 -J
