Why is your skincare pilling up?
Nothing is worse than finishing off your skincare routine to find that something in your routine is balling up on your face. This can be such a pain in the morning because you basically have to start over before you can even start applying make up. There are a few reasons why this may be happening. 1.) Ingredients aren’t meshing well together This has been the case for me lately with the FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer

Sorry but nooo👎🏾
I heard such great reviews about this matte sunscreen so I decided to give it a try. Well...it is not really meant for my gorgeous melanin complexion. It didn’t blend into my face well and left a whiteish film. The sunscreen even dried me out in some areas. For instance, on my cheeks. Although the texture of this sunscreen is soft and velvety it wasn’t good for my skin. With that being said I don’t recommend it for women who have darker skin tones. Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40
I live where the sun shines virtually every day! Therefore, my routine is photo protective. From my morning Vitamin C + antioxidant serums, to my evening gentle acid exfoliants, I have built my skincare routine around anti-aging preventatives. I recently began working topical retinol at low % into my routine and get monthly Y:ag laser facials to stimulate and encourage collagen production. I’m about to turn 26, and I am very lucky to have plenty of collagen and few wrinkles. I spent a lot of my early 20s breaking the cardinal rules of anti-aging including smoking cigarettes (I’ve been nicotine free for over a year now!) and skipping SPF most days. I even had a brief bout of tanning booth addiction 😟 Now I use spf products as a daily routine. I was committed to Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 until a girl at Ulta recommended StriVectin - Full Screen SPF 30 Clear Finish which has a lower SPF and similar consistency as Unseen. I’ve also tried the Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40AND Supergoop! - Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40, neither of which I was really crazy about. The gel/primer consistency of both Unseen Sunscreen and the Strivectin spf are more conducive to my skincare routine and they both sink into my skin without leaving a greasy feeling. Now that I have an office job and wfh, I’m spending about 10 hours/day staring at two huge computer monitors, so I think I’ll stick with the Strivectin screen that also includes Vitamins A, B, C, and Pro-Vitamin D (?) and claims for protect against UVA/UVB, Blue Light (computer screens), and pollution. It’s affordable, comfortable to wear, a little goes a long way, and performs well under makeup when I’m wearing it. The lower spf isn’t a problem for me because I’m not standing in direct sunlight or anything. I think if I had my previous job working outside everyday I’d want a higher spf. Another line of defense I like to fall back on are SPF tinted moisturizers. A while back I had tried the PÜR - 4-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 which is honestly such a dream. This is a photo of me wearing it on a midday walk. It’s low to medium coverage, buildable, hydrating, and stays put! I don’t have very oily skin or especially dry skin so I feel it is a happy medium for those with normal or combo skin types. By no means is it full coverage. I slap this on (using my fingers to apply) if I’m planning to go for a walk in the sunshine or on a hike, in addition to my base layer of SPF. Of course, the best preventative is keeping the sun off your face at all costs, so you’ll usually see me on the trails with one of my favorite floppy hats, or sometimes if I’m feeling jazzy - my Bluestone Sunshield (see a few posts back). 2020 empties and new goodies!!
here are all of my 2020 empties!!! i went ahead and categorized them by brand so that i dont get things mixed up. etude house ——————— ETUDE - SoonJung pH6.5 Whip Cleanser my favorite fungal acne safe cleanser!! its perfect for dry combo skin! ETUDE - Etude House SoonJung pH 5.5 Relief Toner a great fungal acne safe hydrating toner! better for dry skin, it would sometimes leave me oily at the end of the day. drunk elephant ————————— DRUNK ELEPHANT - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum although this serum isn’t fungal acne safe, my skin seems to enjoy it. it has a gel texture and actually regulates my oily forehead DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream another non fungal acne safe products. BUT doesn’t cause me to have breakouts!! its a thicc cream but doesn’t leave me feeling oily!! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Cream Deluxe Sample again... not fungal acne safe but STILL didn’t cause me to have any breakouts!! the protini feels similar in terms of thickness and the over all feeling on the skin but it feels more “ wearable “ first aid beauty ————————— FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer i was super excited to tey this out because the ingredients are fungal acne safe and the claims were ideal for my skin type but sadly i was disappointed 😞 it didn’t control my oil but rather left mw with this shine on my forehead! and it didn’t moisture my dry cheeks. epic fail FIRST AID BEAUTY - Hello FAB Coconut Water Cream this is a very basic fungal acne safe moisturizer i recommend to literally every one. i do like it and all but i find my skin still breaking out while i use this product. i would give it a 3 1/2 stars but i cant. CUROLOGY!!!! ———————— Curology - Curology formula Curology - Curology formula if you have fungal acne THIS is the treatment you NEED to try!!! my holy grail!! naturium ————— NATURIUM - Marine Hyaluronic Water Cream NATURIUM - Marine Hyaluronic Water Cream technically this moisturizer isn’t fungal acne safe because it contains polysorbate HOWEVER its one of the last ingredients listed so its not likely to have any affect. this is my FAVORITE MOISTURIZER!!! super affordable and feels luxurious and its amazing on my combo skin NATURIUM - Niacinamide Serum 12% Plus Zinc 2% my favorite fungal acne safe niacinamide serum!!! its affordable and it does exactly what it claims to do. literally cant get any better than this other lonely products ————————————- boscia - Green Tea Oil-Free Moisturizer this is a fungal acne safe moisturizer however its not very good at moisturizing or controlling oil 😕 but the packaging is cute i guess
Light as air moisturizer!
This is my new holy grail moisturizer! 😍 actually this brand has now become one of my favorite skincare brands! They heavily considered people with sensitive skin and this moisturizer is no exception 🙌🏽 My skin type is very sensitive, combination, and acne prone. I need a moisturizer that is moisturizing, not to watery and not too rich (full of essential oils and fragrance). If you have a suspicion that your skincare may be breaking you out, then I would check for those things in your skincare. This moisturizer is the best of both worlds: no essential oils, no fragrance, rich but not too rich. It’s everything I wanted in a moisturizer. Also, the packaging is pretty big! First aid beauty’s price range is up there ($25+) but they give you a lot of product, and you can tell they a lot of work into making their products sensitive skin friendly! After using the moisturizer for a month, I’ve been keeping my acne under control! Sometimes I even put the moisturizer on my hands because it just feels therapeutic.
Best drugstore sunscreen ☀️
It makes me really happy to see people recognize sunscreen as an important part of a skincare routine. To the point where we have a hard time keeping certain ones on the shelves. One of those just happens to be one of my favorites, the CeraVe - Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 . This mineral sunscreen (5.5% Titanium Dioxide, 10% Zinc Oxide) can be found at most drugstore retailers and costs $15.99 for 1.7 oz of product (keep an eye on your local Ulta, CeraVe goes on sale all the time). It contains ceramides (great for dry skin!) and niacinamide (helps even out pigmentation and reduce redness). It has an SPF of 30 and has what they call, and I don’t exactly agree with, a universal tint so no typical white caste. So for the most part I LOVE this sunscreen. Despite it being a hydrating sunscreen it still sits very well on my oily skin. It rubs in like a cream moisturizer and doesn’t feel like your typical, gross feeling sunscreen. It does give your skin a little bit of a glow which I think looks stunning underneath make up. I usually stick with matte foundations so it just gives it a little bit of a boost so I don’t look too matte. The only reason I give it four stars is the tint. They say it’s a universal tint but it’s too dark for me. It’s like a shade too dark on me so I don’t reach for it often unless I completely take everything down my neck. I wish CeraVe would branch out and create both lighter and darker versions of this sunscreen to accommodate all skin tones. I say it works best on medium tan skin. My best friend self tans and it looks gorgeous on her as a foundation. There will be days she just applies this and it looks like a sheer foundation on her. It’s odd but when you apply it it almost blurs your skin a little bit and evens everything out. There are days when I do use it that I’ll use it in place of my primer as it creates an even toned base for foundation. It’s very hydrating and leaves your skin feeling really soft and not heavy. If you have dry to normal skin I think you’ll really enjoy this! Those with oily skin, you might like this. I did personally but I fee like with oily skin things can be hit or miss person to person. #CheriePartner

what better day to talk about SPF than sunday? ☀
let me start by saying, I was raised thinking that because I was brown, I didn’t need sunscreen (laughing sweat emoji) thankfully, that misconception has been dispelled. EVERYONE needs sunscreen and I now LOVE it. it’s arguably my favorite part of my AM routine. I love changing it up, I love testing different formula, and I love talking about it lol. here’s the ones I’ve currently been rotating through, with some quick thoughts: PETER THOMAS ROTH - Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion max sheer SPF 30 this is one of my top 3 favorite formulas. it is hydrating without being greasy, it sinks in quickly, and it leaves my skin looking and feeling plump and beautiful. no white cast on me! PETER THOMAS ROTH - Water Drench Hyaluronic Hydrating Moisturizer SPF 45 SPF 45 is a tad bit more hydrating, but the issue I ran into was TASTING THE SUNSCREEN no matter how I applied it. I didn’t apply it on my lips but I swear it seeped in through my skin. for those reason, I’m out. lol, jk, but I don’t reach for it like my other ones. no white cast on me. FIRST AID BEAUTY - Weightless Liquid Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 weightless mineral SPF 30 I went through the ringer with this one, lol. the first time I applied it, it was perfect. I didn’t even feel it, BUT my skin got insanely dry? legit dehydrated. the second time, I applied a little more, no dryness, but it felt super heavy and greasy. third time, I applied it with a stipple brush, and it felt like a CC cream. it’s tinted so it provides a smidge of coverage, which is nice for my no makeup days. I read some people had issues with piling, I found it did best over heavier creams. no white cast! Supergoop! - Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40 glow screen SPF 40 I loved this the first time I applied it. then, when I realized I wasn’t applying the right amount for my face (1/4 teaspoon), I had to admit it felt pretty heavy and greasy :(. no white cast, but pretty shimmery for all over the face. not my fave. dear, klairs - Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA ++++ soft airy essence SPF 50 the is also in the top 3 group. incredibly lightweight, the most protection, and zero white cast. it also dries down to the most beautiful satin finish. love love love this one. SPF Rx - Ultra-Clear Daily Skin Hydrator SPF 50 ultra clear daily hydrator SPF 50 this is it, my favorite SPF. well, one of three at least. I absolutely love what this does to my skin. my skin feels so firm, but not tight. even when using the 3 finger method, this sinks in seamlessly. plays perfectly with the rest of my routine, never experienced any white cast, piling or tasting (?) lol. it’s also mineral based so I can’t imagine this formula could be anymore perfect if it tried.

The BEST K-Beauty Sunscreen!
Confession: I used to be one of those people that didn’t believe face sunscreen was necessary. I would watch my mom religiously apply SPF every morning and think that it was just an optional precaution that I personally didn’t need to worry about, especially now that we are at home more often. Turns out I was very wrong. Sunscreen and SPF are a MUST, even if we are staying inside! I’ve learned about how important it is to protect our skin from sun damage and UV rays and I immediately started doing research to find a sunscreen I could add to my skincare routine and wear every day. I’m absolutely obsessed with The Beet Shield from Krave Beauty. It’s lightweight, applies beautifully without any white cast, and has not irritated my skin. It has wonderful ingredients such as beet root and Vitamin C that give my skin a natural glowy look when I put it on. I apply it after my moisturizer as the last step in my routine in the morning. A former SPF skeptic turned sunscreen fan, I highly recommend this sunscreen to give your skin some love and protection from the sun ✨ Krave - The Beet Shield

BATTLE OF SUNSCREENS
Supergoop! - Play Everyday Lotion SPF 30 with Sunflower Extract this is a pretty good sunscreen. it makes your skin look rlly shiny so i do not recommend for oily skin . it leaves a very shiny dewy look. i use this when i’m doing no makeup at all and gonna be home all day. CeraVe - Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 this sunscreen is amazing. it works for my medium skin and leaves my skin very dewy but in a good way. it might not be right for darker skin tones because it has a color and it’s a medium tone so it would look washed on someone darker. Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 this kinda disappointed me. i bought this looking for a nice feel on the skin on summer days but it doesn’t work for me. it feel like i’m putting a heavy oil on my skin and i don’t like that feeling. the only thing i think is nice is the fact that it is clear and you don’t have to worry about the white cast. CeraVe - Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 For Normal To Oily Skin this is one of my first sunscreens. i rlly enjoy using this and reapplying because it feels like i’m putting nothing in my skin. it’s so light for hot humid days. it claims to leave a matte finish but i don’t see a difference maybe because if my serums i add before.

Simple AM Routine for Dry Sensitive Skin ☀️ 🌵
This is my boyfriend’s simple AM skincare routine (created by me! 😁). Before we met 3 years ago, he never moisturized or used sunscreen, and washed his face with body wash. 😱 As you can imagine, his skin used to be hella dry and dehydrated, and his skin barrier was damaged. He has very dry, sensitive skin, isn’t acne-prone, and likes simple and quick routines so that he doesn’t have to spend too much time getting ready. ☀️AM Routine 1. Water rinse face - both he and I skip morning cleansing as to not overly strip the skin of its natural oils. 2. ETUDE - Soon Jung, 2x Barrier Intensive Cream This cream has been a lifesaver for his skin! It has ingredients like Madecassoside to repair the skin barrier. On my combo skin, this cream sits a little too occlusive and shiny, but his skin drinks it up without it being too heavy. Many other simple moisturizers such as the Cerave Moisturizing Cream sting his skin, but this moisturizer does not. 3. PURITO - Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+ This sunscreen is a bit too moisturizing for me, but works well with his dry skin. It has a shiny finish on me, but absorbs more dewy on his skin and doesn’t feel heavy or sticky. His PM routine is also posted on my page!

SPF ROUNDUP ☀️
Happy Fourth of July weekend everyone🇺🇸! It’s no secret that I am obsessed with sunscreen and heading into the long weekend, I’m highlighting all my favorites for sun protection: FACE 🎆 elta md SKINCARE - UV Shield Full-Body Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 45 I start every day with this year round. It’s targeted at normal to oily skin, and has a lightweight finish. Even on top of my face oils, this doesn’t sit too heavily on my face even during the summer 🎆 Supergoop! - Glow Stick SPF 50 My summer obsession, this reef-safe, face oil/spf stick keeps you glowing, hydrated, and protected all day long 🎆 Neutrogena - Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock Broad Spectrum SPF 70 another great stick for on-the go reapplication, this one has a more matte finish and a classic fresh neutrogena spf smell 🎆 Kiehl's - Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 my daily spf before I started using elta md. It’s better for normal to dry skin and I actually prefer it to elta md for winter because it focuses on moisturizing ingredients alongside spf 🎆 sun bum - Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30 I love lip balms with sunscreen! This one tastes/smells like coconut and has aloe for hydration. The biggest downside is that it melts down like coconut oil so if you apply more than a super thin layer you’ll feel like you’re eating this. 🎆 BIOSSANCE - Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 PA +++ another lightweight, reef safe sunscreen that leaves no white-cast. I have several sample size bottles of this that I keep everywhere but probably wouldn’t buy the full size as I find it a bit greasy/sticky BODY 🎇 Sun Bum Broad Spectrun SPF 50 (cannot find in cherie) is a great all around sunscreen for long days on the water! It smells like banana laffy taffy, rubs in easily, and is water resistant for 80 minutes 🎇 Supergoop! - Glow Oil SPF 50 I love body oils so I was naturally drawn to this product. It has a spray nozzle for easy application or can be dispensed into your hand and spread on. This absorbs immediately and leaves you glowy all over...swoon! 🎇 Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion with SPF 15 (also not on Cherie) is how I finally convinced my sunscreen-hating fiancé to use daily sun protection. He uses it on his face as well as his body and loves that it feels like a moisturizer rather than a sticky sunscreen. ☀️ I hope you all have fun in the sun this weekend (with lots of spf of course 😉). What’s your go-to sunscreen?!

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
