When should you use sunscreen?

When should you use sunscreen?

Mallory
Always. You should always be using sunscreen. BUT there are a lot of cases out there where you absolutely need to be wearing sunscreen no matter what or else it’s counter productive to what you’re using in your routine. I’ve noticed this a lot online and with customers at work where they dive into all these skincare products but aren’t aware you need to be protecting your skin as well. That’s okay, I’m here to help. 🖤 If you’re using actives in your routine you need to wear a sunscreen. If you’re using AHAs (looking at you The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution
), BHAs, Vitamin C, Retinol, PHAs, and/or anything else that exfoliates, brightens, or speeds up cell turn over it’s counter productive if you’re not using one. When you’re using products like this they can cause the skin to become photosensitive. What this means is that fresh, new layer of beautiful skin that’s just been exposed is a lot more sensitive to the sun. Think of your skin like a baby. It’s important to keep it out of the sun as much as possible and protect it whenever possible. If not you’re not going to be seeing results from your skincare products as more damage will pop up because of the sun. I’ve also heard a lot lately of people claiming to not need sunscreen because they are indoors a lot. You still need it. UVA/UVB rays can still penetrate through glass and affect your skin. Whether you’re in your house, driving to work, or by any window in general the rays are still hitting and affecting your skin. Esthetician school taught me 90% of aging is caused by UVA/UVB rays. It’s up to us to protect our skin in order to prevent skin cancer and see the results we want out of our skincare products. A lot of skincare is preventative and sunscreen is the number 1 preventative action you can take. I also want to take the time to say you do need a stand alone sunscreen. Sunscreen in make up and moisturizers do not count. The amount of that product you would need in order to get your recommended dose of SPF is insane. You’d be caking that stuff on your face all day. It is diluted in the product and not as effective as a stand alone sunscreen. My top three sunscreens lately have been the Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40
, CeraVe - Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30
, and KINSHIP - Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturzing Sunscreen Zinc Oxide SPF 32
. None of them have a white caste and don’t give you that heavy sunscreen feel you remember from your childhood. Soon I want to go into in-depth posts about all three so stay tuned for that 🖤 #CheriePartner

SPF Please
I live where the sun shines virtually every day! Therefore, my routine is photo protective. From my morning Vitamin C + antioxidant serums, to my evening gentle acid exfoliants, I have built my skincare routine around anti-aging preventatives. I recently began working topical retinol at low % into my routine and get monthly Y:ag laser facials to stimulate and encourage collagen production. I’m about to turn 26, and I am very lucky to have plenty of collagen and few wrinkles. I spent a lot of my early 20s breaking the cardinal rules of anti-aging including smoking cigarettes (I’ve been nicotine free for over a year now!) and skipping SPF most days. I even had a brief bout of tanning booth addiction 😟 Now I use spf products as a daily routine. I was committed to Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 until a girl at Ulta recommended StriVectin - Full Screen SPF 30 Clear Finish which has a lower SPF and similar consistency as Unseen. I’ve also tried the Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40AND Supergoop! - Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40, neither of which I was really crazy about. The gel/primer consistency of both Unseen Sunscreen and the Strivectin spf are more conducive to my skincare routine and they both sink into my skin without leaving a greasy feeling. Now that I have an office job and wfh, I’m spending about 10 hours/day staring at two huge computer monitors, so I think I’ll stick with the Strivectin screen that also includes Vitamins A, B, C, and Pro-Vitamin D (?) and claims for protect against UVA/UVB, Blue Light (computer screens), and pollution. It’s affordable, comfortable to wear, a little goes a long way, and performs well under makeup when I’m wearing it. The lower spf isn’t a problem for me because I’m not standing in direct sunlight or anything. I think if I had my previous job working outside everyday I’d want a higher spf. Another line of defense I like to fall back on are SPF tinted moisturizers. A while back I had tried the PÜR - 4-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 which is honestly such a dream. This is a photo of me wearing it on a midday walk. It’s low to medium coverage, buildable, hydrating, and stays put! I don’t have very oily skin or especially dry skin so I feel it is a happy medium for those with normal or combo skin types. By no means is it full coverage. I slap this on (using my fingers to apply) if I’m planning to go for a walk in the sunshine or on a hike, in addition to my base layer of SPF. Of course, the best preventative is keeping the sun off your face at all costs, so you’ll usually see me on the trails with one of my favorite floppy hats, or sometimes if I’m feeling jazzy - my Bluestone Sunshield (see a few posts back). Do you wear SPF every day? Have you made any lifestyle changes for the sake of beauty/anti-aging? Share your tips or thoughts below!

I like it but .....
Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40 I like it but for me it is very drying, I have combination skin but I am drier than oily, its application is easy, it blends very well, it does not leave white but I do not like it! I'M LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT SUN PROTECTOR FOR MY SKIN

⚡️SKIN SAVIOR SERUMS ⚡️
These are some of my newer serums that I’ve been using for a few months now and I’m totally in love!! Here’s how I use them and what they do for me 🥰 My Skin Type: Very Combination, Rosacea, Light skin tone, 21 yrs old PEACH & LILY - Glass Skin Refining Serum Price: $39/40 mL Ingredients: niacinamide, peach extract, peptides, hyaluronic acid Thoughts: This serum is PERFECT for combination skin! Its super hydrating and also controls excess oil production with the niacinamide/HA combo. I find that it really makes my skin look healthy and balanced and keeps breakouts at bay. I usually use niacinamide products at night because I tend to get the most oily over night. Love it so much!💕 FARMACY - Honeymoon Glow Serum Price: $58/1 oz Ingredients: AHA, BHA, flower acids, honey, HA Thoughts: Easily my favorite chemical exfoliator! Much gentler than The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution which I do love but rarely feel that I am able to use because my skin is easily sensitized, but this farmacy serum gets the job done and I LOVE that its a serum that I can leave on over night and wake up to soft glowy skin! PAULA'S CHOICE - Defense Antioxidant Pore Purifier Price: $31/1 oz Ingredients: salicylic acid, vit C, licorice root, ceramides, coq10, other antioxidants Thoughts: this is my GO TO morning serum! Not only does it clear my pores and keep my oil production at bay, as well as reduce the inflammation of any acne I’m experiencing, its also very hydrating and protects your skin from free radicals and aging! Its really such a well rounded product that does a bit of everything and works so well, my favorite PC product ❤️ Krave - Great Barrier Relief Price: $28/45 mL Ingredients: tamanu, sunflower, & rosehip oils, squalane, vit b3, ceramides Thoughts: a GREAT moisturizer for when your skin is super dehydrated or sensitive, it really gives a great reset. I gave it 4 stars because its marketed as a serum when its very much a cream-consistency, and I cant use it too often because the oils tend to clog my T zone. However it definitely does what its meant to do and when nothing else helps, this product DOES! Have you tried these serums? Whats your favorite? Lmk any questions you have!!

How many masks are too many...?
I used to love masking! I’d do at least 1 to 2 a week. Now I’ve gotten lazy and just don’t do them and I have so many I need to start using before they expire! For me, I feel having an exfoliating mask and a hydrating mask is all you need. Unless your using the product consistently you’re not going to see changes. Masks are great for plumping up the skin, adding hydration and even a soft glow. But of all the masks I’ve used I’ve never found long term effects from them (except exfoliating). One way I like to use them is right before a big night (or day) out. To give my skin that added boost. Some that are great for doing so are: FARMACY - Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask (use as a 10 min mask) SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask FIRST AID BEAUTY - Hello FAB Ginger & Turmeric Vitamin C Jelly Mask And many others that help brighten and hydrate! I will also not go without my exfoliating masks which I do once a week. Some faves are: PAULA'S CHOICE - 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Yerba Mate Resurfacing Energy Facial The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution HERBIVORE - Prism 20% AHA + 5% BHA Exfoliating Glow Facial And a few others I have that I liked to use; BIOSSANCE - Squalane + Tea Tree Detox Mask ELEMIS - Superfood Vital Veggie Mask bliss - Mighty Marshmallow Mask Unfortunately as I said, I just don’t mask as often as I used to. And I feel it isn’t necessary. If you like to then I suggest you get yourself an exfoliating and moisturizing/hydrating mask and you should be good to go. Treatments are where you want to really zone in and specialize your finances for. Is it Friday yet? Ugh! I’ve been down all week with a neck I cannot turn - ouchie! And a migraine on top of that! I’m ready to knock my dogs out cause they are wanting out every half hour (it’s nice here ⛅️) Much ❤️ my skinnies 🍒

SPLOTCHY tinted mineral sunscreen. Save your 💰
Ugh🤬 I bought this sunscreen via Dr.Drays raving review. I put it on and.... ❌1. It’s a splotchy mess ❌2. It’s way too dark of a tint for my skin tone I tried reapplying in places where it didn’t cover but that made it worse. It also clumped in certain parts of my face. Just an awful product. Did anyone else experience this? 💰 For a drug store sunscreen, it’s pretty expensive ($17 + tax!). I do not recommend. Save your money. CeraVe - Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30

Skincare 101: the Basics
Three products are all you really need to care for your skin. Well, maybe not *you* specifically, but let’s be frank: most people don’t *need* a twelve-step routine to take care of their skin. If you’re starting off in skincare, your financial situation has changed, or your skin has been flaring with redness/flaking/breakouts, opt for a super simple routine for a month or two to see how your skin does without the extra frills. It may surprise you how little you need to keep your skin happy! • 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿: Cleanse with water in the morning, or opt for a hydrating cleanser if you’re oily, workout, or just enjoy cleansing often. Double-cleanse with that hydrating cleanser (and/or an oil-based balm) in the evening, or opt for a single cleanse with a gel or foaming cleanser. My milky faves are CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser and HOLI FROG - Tashmoo Water Lily Nourishing Milky Wash , while my deep-cleansing faves are CeraVe - Hydrating Cream-To-Foam Cleanser and PAULA'S CHOICE - RESIST Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser . • 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿: Moisturize morning and night, regardless of your skin type! Look for products with ceramides and fatty acids to nourish the skin barrier. If your skin is more oily, opt for lightweight moisturizers like gels and lotions. If your skin is dry, creams and balms are going to be better for binding hydration and moisture to your skin. My faves for oily skin? CeraVe - PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion , VERSED - DEW POINT Moisturizing Gel-Cream , and PAULA'S CHOICE - Probiotic Nutrient Moisturizer . My dry skin faves are NATURIUM - Plant Ceramide Rich Moisture Cream , THE inkey LIST - Peptide Moisturizer , and DRUNK ELEPHANT - Lala Retro Whipped Cream . • 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻: The most important step! Sunscreen is the ultimate anti-aging product, so reapply every two hours y’all. My main loves for all skin types are PAULA'S CHOICE - Youth-extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 and elta md SKINCARE - UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 . Those with dry skin, I’ve been enjoying CeraVe - Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 , though paler folks may prefer DRUNK ELEPHANT - Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 . What’s your fave step? What extra step would you add in that’s not featured here? 👀 Keep up with the tag #Skincare101 to follow along this guide I’ll be posting to cover some basic concepts in skincare!

Desert Island Products!
These are my desert island products!!! If I was stranded on a desert island and could only bring 4 things, these are what I would bring: DRUNK ELEPHANT - E-Rase Milki Micellar Water If I were stranded I would want this so I could still cleanse my face despite being without clean water 😂 Hanskin - Hyaluron Skin Essence I would bring this because it is so hydrating and if I were stuck in the sun all day I would definitely want to keep my skin hydrated! PEACH & LILY - Glass Skin Refining Serum I literally just cannot live without this product plus it has hyaluronic acid and peptides which will hydrate and help prevent aging KINSHIP - Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturzing Sunscreen Zinc Oxide SPF 32 Lastly, you cannot be stranded on a desert island without sunscreen!!! And this is such an amazing sunscreen, it is hydrating, no white cast, but is a physical sunscreen!

Sunscreen Steal!
Okay yall, I got this at TJ Maxx for $16! Don’t worry, I checked the expiration date and all that good stuff. So, here is my honest review: BIOSSANCE - Squalane + Mineral SPF 45 I know biossance released a new SPF in place of this one that gets much better reviews. This, however, was not a bad find for $16. Slight white cast but not too bad and it was really hydrating! It’s definitely something I will keep with me in my gym bag for when I’m out and about but it won’t be my go to since I also just got the KINSHIP - Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturzing Sunscreen Zinc Oxide SPF 32 and it’s my favorite spf ever.

The best sunscreen ever!!!!
The best sunscreen ever!!!!
So I discovered this product on Instagram and it's by credithink and the product is called saferecipe. It's a K-beauty brand and its a SPF 50+pa it has panthenol & ceramide which is all great for anti-aging. This is a great product because I found out that its great as a primer which is absolutely amazing. I have combination sensitive skin so I have to be careful on what I use and this did not give me a bad reaction nor have I broke out and let me tell you it's rare to find a sunscreen that doesn't break me out. It's suitable for all skin types and it leaves your skin feeling so soft, dewy and just an glowing finish. It has a minty smell to it and doesn't leave a white film like some sunscreens. You can purchase this on amazon or check out there shop on Instagram. This is my forever go-to sunscreen product. It's extremely important to always wear sunscreen because prevents dark spot, wrinkles and is anti-aging. Do you wear sunscreen everyday? Did you know that you can sun exposure just by driving and even by sitting near a window, yikes!! I always always wear sunscreen even if I don't go outside. Remember hot girls wear sunscreen!!#credithink - saferecipe[products]#[FiveStars]

why spf is important 🧴
why spf is important 🧴
sunscreen is an easily skipped step. it should be the last product you put on your face, close to the time of sun exposure. and honestly, i forget to put it on too. but here are a few reminders of why you should use it each day. 1) it protects your skin from the harsh uv rays 2) it lowers your skin cancer risk 3) it prevents early maturing of the skin (wrinkles) 4) helps maintain even skin tone 5) helps prevent discoloration and dark spots 6) helps maintain a smother skin tone 7) keeps your skin healthy overall i hope this helps! don’t forget your sunscreen!!!

SUNSCREEN — EVERY. DAMN. DAY.
SUNSCREEN — EVERY. DAMN. DAY.
I have to give big ups to the Supergoop unseen sunscreen. I’ve gone WAY TOO LONG trying sunscreen+moisturizer combos and have never been truly satisfied. I would’ve started using this sooner but I’m really an advocate for clean products and went to a Credo once needing sunscreen for a vacation and was contemplating getting Supergoop vs one of their own recommendations....and they said....”you’re going to be on vacation?? At the beach?! Supergoop contains octinoxate and it’s harmful to the reef!” And I was like..noooo not the reef! So I ended up getting the Josh Rosebrook SPF that 1. Made my face hella white when I sweat (which I did A LOT—there was a heat wave) and 2. did NOT protect my skin and had me looking like a burnt chicken nugget by the end of that trip. Mistakes were made. I also think the SPF was not strong enough anyway (30) — but it has zinc in it which just doesn’t hold up well and makes you really crusty looking. ANYWAY, I found out that Supergoop recently reformulated their SPFs and are now reef-safe!! They are now free of octinoxate!! The unseen is also perfect because it doesn’t leave those pesky white marks all over your face when you break a sweat. I’ve also tried the moisturizer SPF and it’s quite nice but unseen sunscreen is great for me! Highly recommend for darker skin tones because it’s smooth and glides on beautifully and is truly UNSEEN. OH I also have the huge bottle of the Play every day lotion and I LOVE IT. Will post about it soon. Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40

Splish Splash, Come Get Your Sunscreen 🌞
Hello lovies! I am back with a new review featuring the SDARA - Zinc Oxide Sunscreen . This mineral sunscreen was kindly gifted to me by SDARA Skincare. It retails for $22.00 (3 fl oz) and it has SPF 30. I like many people are staying home and limiting my visits to stores, beaches, and parks. However, I do enjoy a good walk around my neighborhood or lounging in my backyard. Cue my newest sunscreen family member! I had read about this product way before I was able to try it out and I loved that is “100% reef safe and doesn’t harm our ocean,” according to SDARA’s Instagram page. It’s intended to be ultra light, non-greasy, and have a sheer finish. My biggest issue with some sunscreen is that they are too heavy and lead to major face breakouts if I am wearing them all day long. For reference, I have oily combo skin. I would especially deal with this issue on vacations aka the worst time to experience.a breakout. I was told ahead of time that a little product goes a long way and they were right. For reference, see the second picture and how a dab of products takes effort to rub into skin. A plus is that the product is indeed light so it’s not too much of an issue. I would recommend this product to my friends because I want everyone to be safe and get into the habit of applying sunscreen on a regular. The only reason why I gave it four stars is because I haven’t been able to use this on a “vacation mode“ so I don’t know if it will indeed lead to breakouts or not. To end on a positive note I really did enjoy the sunscreen and for the price and for what it says it does I think it’s definitely worth a try. Additionally it does not have a strong scent it almost doesn’t have a set at all. Remember to always wear your sunscreen.

dear, klairs - Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA ++++ I know this is a popular sunscreen and it's been reviewed a lot but it is my favorite and I just finished my second bottle so I want to share it. It has no white cast. It's colored white and then absorbs onto the skin very well. It has antioxidants in it from the sea buckthorn oil and niacinamide added to it. My skin does well on it, I think it is a good moisturizer and it will suffice for the winter. It doesn't feel heavy or greasy on the skin. It has the most UVA protection for Asian sunscreens bc of 4 PA +'s which is nice because I care about UVA protection more. The one thing I really like about it though is that it is fully chemical and doesn't burn/sting my eyes because I have sensitive eyes. I don't even put sunscreen near my eyes but some chemical sunscreens burn my eyes almost everyday when I try hard to not put them near my eyes. I'm still trying to figure out the chemical filters that sting my eyes, all I know is that the UV filters in this sunscreen and the Japanese biore don't burn my eyes. This sunscreen has the same filters as the purito safe sun & purito unscented and is very similar. I like those too, the reason I choose this one over those though is because it is a little easier to absorb on the skin. The klairs sunscreen doesn't break me out or sensitize my skin. My skin is sensitive but not super sensitive so I usually do fine with chemical sunscreens anyways. I think I saw some reviews that it irritated or broke out some people's skin so it depends for everyone. It's unscented, although that doesn't mean it doesn't have fragrances that cover up natural smells unless it says fragrance free.
