Toner? Face mist? What is it & do I need it? 🤔
Amongst a plethora of steps in my skincare routine, I have often questioned, what is the actual point of toner⁉️ Here’s the low down: Is toner absolutely necessary? 🙅🏽♀️ no. 💡But here is why you might want to consider investing in one... Toners are water based liquids packed with targeted ingredients that can: ✔️MINIMIZE PORES (👀 look for active ingredients like salicylic acid, witch hazel, tea tree oil) ✔️EXFOLIATE (👀 look for active ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, salicylic, glycolic acid) ✔️CALM & SOOTHE (👀 look for ingredients like cucumber & aloe) ✔️ REMOVE EXCESS MAKEUP ✔️HYDRATE (👀 look for ingredients like rosehip, peptides, aloe, vitamin E) ✔️BALANCE SKIN’S ACIDIC PH LEVEL (to avoid over-drying, try looking for a an alcohol free option) When to use it? Directly after cleansing. Apply toner to a cotton pad or ball and gently swipe across your t-zones or other targeted areas. Alternatively, I like to pat my toner into the skin. Now, on to facial mist... This is a great option for instant skin hydration 💧and can be used post-cleanse, to prime makeup, or for a midday refresh. Ingredients like lactic acid, glycerin, aloe and hyaluronic acid are great for hydration, while mists containing salicylic acid and willow bark are a great option for refining & clarifying. Mists can also help to soothe skin, give you a dewy look, or improve absorption of your moisturizer. Moral of the story: Toners and mists are NOT an essential step in your skincare routine, but if you’re looking to enhance your regimen, this is a great add! My picks: THAYERS - Rose Petal Facial Mist
Hydrating face mists
Get rid of large pores
Skin hydration products
Minimize enlarged pores toners

LaurenOMalleyDO NOT USE WITCH HAZEL OR MARIO BADESCU. ‼️‼️‼️ they are both horrible for your skin.

LaurenchichWith any skincare purchase it’s always good to do a deep dive into the ingredient list. While these products work for me, they’re not for everyone. I use them in moderation and find some of the other ingredients to beneficial to my skincare goals. Witch Hazel can be drying so it’s always important to listen to your skin and eliminate irritating products. I find Thayers to be calming but that may not be everyone’s experience. My post was not intended to promote either product, but rather distinguish the difference between toner and facial mist. I just happened to share what I use at home. I appreciate your feedback as it helps me further research the products I use at home.

Brands I won't be reviewing (part 2)
I promised a part two to this (so if you haven't, take a look at part 1). I'm not saying you can't purchase these brands. I just personally won't be and consequently won't be reviewing them (because I buy everything I review). Juice beauty for not providing helpful customer service. I personally do not care for their brand after I got into skincare and bought their JUICE BEAUTY - Green Apple Brightening Gel Cleanser . As I got deeper into the skincare world, I found out that their second ingredient is citrus medica limonum (lemon juice) which is irritating and can cause photosensitivity. Even though it is a wash off treatment it has me skeptical because of how high on the ingredients list it is. I saw their ad on facebook and decided to politely voice my concern and ask why they felt it was a good ingredient. They not only deleted my comment, but banned me from being able to comment on their future ads. This to me shows a lack of transparency. I decided to take my concern and turn it into a review for their webpage. It has never been posted on their website even though it has been months ago. They have still only allowed 1 one star review on their website which shows me that the company filters their reviews. I know they are not the only brand that does this, but I do not care to support it. Kylie skin... There is a reason why I am skeptical about celebrity brands and this does not help. For one they made KYLIE COSMETICS - Walnut Face Scrub and if you don't know for the most part physical exfoliants (unless uniformly shaped and edges have been rounded down on a microscopic level) are not good! They can leave microtears in your skin leaving your skin vulnerable. As you can imagine chunks of walnut are not good to use as an exfoliant and will be overly abrasive. Other products (KYLIE COSMETICS - Detox Face Mask and KYLIE COSMETICS - KYLIE COSMETICS Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Face Sunscreen ) have been taken from other brands with very similar ingredients lists, but have been altered to be less effective and therefore cheaper (well the sunscreen was more of a direct copy of supergoop... Let's be real). Overall I'm not impressed. Her skincare isn't innovative and made for us in mind. Instead just used to line pockets of people who are already rolling in it. Mario Badescu secretly using steroids in their products which is extremely dangerous for their customers. Steroids for one should never be used on your face without a dermatologist’s recommendation or prescription. When used for a long period of time, it can lead to long term effects when not taken off of them correctly. When some people found this out, they had already been using their products for a long period of time and consequently, when switching to a new product, had long term effects. I also do not like any of their facial sprays (MARIO BADESCU - Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater ) because they are heavily fragranced.
Hate it? Don’t toss it! Repurpose it!

Thayers changed their formula
I used this as a toner in my routine and the first bottle worked great. However after reordering it on amazon I noticed it made my face burn a little . According to reviews they changed the formula. And i have my old bottle and can confirm they did. They removed the grapefruit seed extract and THAYERS - Rose Petal Facial Mist added more chemicals: caprylyl glycol, ethylhexlglycerin, and potassium hydroxide the ladder is probably the new ingredient making my face burn. The first pic was the original formula The second pic is the new one
Why Thayers Witch Hazel Toner is 👍 and 👎
Around April 2019, I added BHA to my skincare routine and was using it daily. My skin experienced redness and burn marks since I was not letting other products dry properly before applying my BHA. In my state of panic, I messaged my Curology provider right away. 👍 Along with my Curology formula, she recommended I purchase Thayers Witch Hazel Toner. It’s 100% effective against redness. Within a month, it soothed the burnt dark spots I had and I couldn’t have asked for more. I used it everyday for a whole month by applying the toner onto a cotton pad, gently swiping over my entire face. 👎 In 30 days what I learnt was that witch hazel is a natural astringent. So even if it’s alcohol-free, an astringent is a type of chemical that shrinks or constricts body tissues causing dryness. It started to strip away the surface layer of my skin until I noticed flakes all over sensitive areas of my face: nose and chin. Take a peek at my second picture where I try to highlight those areas. CONCLUSION: Overall, if you suffer from redness or minor burns then please use witch hazel toner until you need it but never forget the step of moisturizing! It works but you don’t need this applied permanently into your skincare routine. RECOMMENDATION: If you bought into the fad and have a big bottle at home, don’t worry. Witch hazel is so versatile and can be used for: - relieves minor cuts by reducing 🩸 bleeding - soothe razor burns 🪒 and diaper rashes 🐣 - spot treatment for acne spots and pimples - helps treat hemorrhoids for anyone suffering 🙏 - tucks medicated pads without the cotton pad. Hooray for postpartum mamas! The product has so many good reviews and its always easy to believe in the overhype. I hope THAYERS - Rose Petal Facial Mist works out for you if you’re using it daily but there’s so many more toners out there that is way better for your skin that can address your skin concerns without over drying. Let’s strive for happier and healthier skin. Thanks for reading! 🤩
Why You Shouldn’t Trust Mario Badescu Skin Care
Mario Badescu Skincare was founded in 1967 and has been steadily gaining popularity. As of now, their products are more commonly seen on Tik Tok and Instagram as part of aesthetic skin care routines. This correlates to their consumer demographic which consists mostly of teenage females. Does this brand really deserve all the positive attention it’s receiving? My answer would be “no.” You can decide what you think after reading further. The Lawsuit In 2013, the brand agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed by thirty-one customers. The plaintiffs claimed that they were injured by undisclosed steroids in two of the brand’s face creams. The Control Cream and Healing Cream were marketed as products with the only active ingredients being “botanical.” The two steroids were hydrocortisone and triamcinolone acetonide. Allegedly, the two creams contained a concentration of triamcinolone acetonide that is higher than prescription-strength. Not only do these steroids cause serious risk to the skin, but to the overall health of the body. The plaintiffs used these products daily for as long as fourteen years. Many claimed that they unknowingly became addicted to the steroids causing painful withdrawal reactions when skipping usage. There were also claims of steroid-related illnesses while using one of the two creams, including glaucoma, adrenal system suppression, mood disorders, and so on. Why would consumers continually support a brand even after a lawsuit such as this? Well, ignorance is bliss. Current Formulations Now, the truth is all in the formulations of the products. A popular product such as the brand’s facial sprays can be be troublesome. The sprays, like many of their other products, have a high concentration of dyes and fragrance. Over a long period of time, these sensitizing ingredients can cause issues such as fragrance allergies. Not only that, but the other ingredients in the formula are just basic, common ingredients. There are much better alternatives for this facial spray, but a facial spray isn’t a necessity in a routine. Many products from this brand have very basic formulations that have a slight benefit to the skin. Marketing I must admit, the brand still holds popularity today because of it’s exceptional marketing and support. Many celebrities and teens promote this product on their social media pages which really helps this brand stay in the spotlight. It also helps that the company quietly changed and removed the steroids from their products after the lawsuit. Announcing it along with a public apology would have brought many questions of the company’s ethics and bring more controversy. Conclusion Although this brand has maintained its popularity over the years, the formulations and brand history has its negatives. There are many other brands that have superior formulations, better price points, and are more ethical.

Meh Toner, Won’t buy again, anybody want it?
Long time lover of Aesop. But not this toner. It really doesn’t do much for my skin and leaves my face feeling a bit dry. Cons: • witch hazel • not moisturizing, but leaves my skin feeling dry • don’t feeling balanced after using lol Pros: • cute bottle for decoration, perhaps stick a piece of flower in there Aesop - B & Tea Balancing Toner

Witch Hazel: Is it Worth the Hype?!
I would rate this witch hazel toner from Dickinson’s from a 4-4.5/5 stars ✨ This toner feels great on the skin and invigorating? 😆🤣 Ok well I really do love this toner BUT some people do not like the smell of witch hazel toner so if you are sensitive to smell or already know you don’t like the smell don’t get this! I personally don’t mind the smell and it grows on you. I use this product everyday, and as mentioned in my previous post (if you haven’t see that one, make sure to check it out😄), I use this toner after I shower and then apply my moisturizer. Instead of using cotton balls/pads I poured my toner in a recycled Lush spray bottle (from a previous toner) and spritz it on if my face is feeling oily or after a shower. In conclusion, this product is truly amazing in my eyes and definitely recommend to use it if you need a simple pure toner that isn’t too stripping and keeps your pores and face in check. It is not too pricy and lasts for quite some time so I think it’s worth it and not one of those overpriced beauty products! 💗💓✨ I hope everyone’s staying safe and social distancing!! Please stay home 🙏

Thayer’s Alcohol-drew Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera THAYERS - Witch Hazel Astringent An oldie, but classic goody. This is a staple that’s always in my skincare cabinet. It’s soothing, tones my face without drying it AND it smells delightful. It’s surprisingly hydrating, I feel like it helps shrink my pores. I also use it on my legs after I shave to help minimize ingrown hairs and it has helped tremendously. If you’re looking for a classic, basic staple, this is the one for you.

Tips For Combination Skincare You Need To Know
Combination skin in is where your skin is oily in the forehead, chin and T-zone area (nose). But you may found your cheeks and other parts of the face very dry. Combination skin is like falls between oily and dry skin groups. It is caused by the overproduction of oil in some areas while the dry parts have less oil glands and moisture. Basically it is the imbalance of oil and hydration. Many people in this group would focus too much on Oil-control. Hydration is the priority and main cause and what we should actually focus on. Here are a few tips I want to share with combination skin. Stay balanced is the main purpose of our group who falls between oily and dry. Nice and tight moisturized. It has amazing ingredients and vitamin skin. Here is my skin care menu A.M.: Cleanser -> Toner -> Moisturizer or Day cream (Lightweight)-> Sunscreen (Zinc Oxide) P.M. Cleansing Gel -> Toner -> Serum -> Moisturizer On a weekly basis I would do 2 clay masks and face oil twice a day. Do’s From a wash off process as the first step in the skin care process, I would prefer a gel-based non-fragrance and non-foaming cleanser. I also prefer non-irritating ones. Don’ts When you have combination skin, it’s important to go with a gentle cleansing product that is not too harsh. Do not skip SPF. Wear sunscreen and always protect your skin from UV light for extra damage on cells. Here are two of my favorite timers that I love to use through out the year. they are both very light weighted and gentle. Light toners keep my skin calm and stable from acne outbreak or dryness. ORIGINS - Dr. Andrew Weil For Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience Soothing Treatment Lotion Limited Edition I use this after the facial cleanser. A little goes a long way. It gives an extra boost of hydration. Overall promotes really good balance and skin health. CAUDALIE - CAUDALIE Beauty Elixir This elixir really helps you feel fresh, clean, and pampered. I LOVE the slight herbal smell.

What a melon toner
** includes fragrance, I’m not sensitive to fragrance and actually prefer it** Until I’m willing to spend a bunch of money on glow recipe toner I decided to try this out since I LOVE THIS BRAND! bliss - What A Melon Replenishing Watermelon Toner $9.99 Everyone keeps saying this is $17 dollars and it is everywhere, except at target where it’s only $10. I’m trying my best to stick to vegan, cruelty-free products cause I just don’t see the point in harming animals for makeup or skincare. This product is also oil-free which is awesome for my oily acne-prone skin. There are tons of active ingredients in this toner that are combating all kinds of issues (included in the picture). The most advertised ingredients are witch hazel - anti-inflammatory, antioxidant willow bark - soothing, exfoliating, anti inflammatory antioxidant hyaluronic acid - hydrating Aside from the main product there’s a bunch of other ingredients that are giving added effects. I never think of toners as being too life changing but I do love that with all my slightly drying acne fighting ingredients, this toner will hydrate my skin without causing more problems but rather helping them too. Anyone else use this toner? Let me know what you think.

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
