Exfoliation 101 – Wisdom for Acne-Prone & Simultaneously Aging Skin
Exfoliation is a tricky but necessary aspect of properly caring for your skin. You may think that cleansing alone is doing the trick, but dead skin cells build up and need to be resurfaced for a more bright, rejuvenated, and glowing appearance. If you scrub too hard, the skin barrier will become inflamed or damaged. If you do not scrub at all, your skin becomes unevenly textured and dull in coloration. If you are battling adult-acne, you sadly can’t use many of the BEST anti-aging products. This is because the formulas are often too thick or concentrated, leading to increased blemishes. It is a confusing dance to learn the ins and outs of exfoliation, especially with the party of combination skin. But here are the tricks that worked for me! About my skin: · European/White/Cherokee Native American Ethnicity/background · Very acne-prone; cystic, scarring, uneven skin tone · Battling aging at the same time (age: 25) · Oily in some places, dry in others, very fun! One of my favorites is a product that I discovered in France a few Summers ago while living abroad (shipping worldwide) is the Deep Cleansing Exfoliator by Caudalie. Here is a bit about the regimen: · I use this product about twice per week, to avoid over-exfoliating and causing skin irritation (or more breakouts). · I use about a nickel-sized amount, pretty generously. You can use a pea-sized drop, whatever feels right! This simple and ‘whipped’ texture is very gentle while somehow feeling like gritty sand. Just as your face feels refreshed from saltwater and the beach, this formula feels like it is giving me a new layer of skin! A brighter, clearer, smoother, and healthier layer of skin!! This gritty product works deep yet somehow is lightweight like a cloud. It has dramatically enhanced the clarity of my skin and has been a real gamechanger. Thank goodness I do not have to fly to France every time I need it, or there would be trouble! Please note – This is simply what has worked for me as the best exfoliant used to date. What works for my skin may not work for your skin. There are mechanical, chemical, or topical exfoliations available on a crowded marketplace. To set honest expectations - You will have to experiment with different exfoliation products to find the right fit for your skin. Tips for exfoliation: · You have to find your own frequency. You can exfoliate every day, and this only works for some skin-types; for others, this can lead to increased breakouts. You want to preserve the natural Ph and balance of your skin, while still forcing it to regenerate new skin cells. · If you do exfoliate daily, do so GENTLY! · Do not use harsh exfoliants that have things like plastic microbeads, shells, volcanic rock, or accidental particles that get thrown into the natural concoction. These are commonly used in cheaply-made or under-researched products, leading to microtears in the skin. To avoid, purchase your product from a trusted and reputable skin-care brand. · Always moisturize afterward. Since my skin is acne-prone, I have to opt for oil-free options. Be very careful with chemical peels or mechanical options as they are literally peeling away a layer of the skin. Chemical peels can lead to scarring and infection, on top of the sheer pain. I personally recommend opting for a more gentle topical option, such as the Caudalie line for skin detoxification. Experiment slowly, and you will find the right regimen of products and frequency for your skin type. Starting early will always be better than starting late!

mayaemWhen I went to Sephora for a new skincare routine ( I had really bad acne at the time ). They were able to sell me on this product, and I’ve got no regrets! I don’t use this very often only when I have dry dead skin and it’s great. As well it’s not ruff on my skin, very gentle. 10/10 would recommend!

Congested Skin Routine
Even though I test out countless products, my skin also has a tendency to get congested. In those times, I gravitate toward this routine to help me out. This can be done on a weekly basis for maintenance, or just as a “spot treatment” — whatever works for you. Step 1 — Acid Cleanser HOLI FROG - Shasta AHA Refining Acid Wash I love using this cleanser as the first step in my congested skin routine because it has AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) so it provides a gentle chemical exfoliation. It has a creamy texture, so it doesn’t foam up like a traditional cleanser would, which also contributes to it not being drying like a traditional acid-infused cleanser. Step 2 — Physical Exfoliant CAUDALIE - CAUDALIE Deep Cleansing Exfoliator To remove all the stubborn dead skin cells, I like to use a gentle physical exfoliant, and this one is a great way to buff away any excess skin or texture. It doesn’t have a scent to it, so I find it is a good way to provide a good exfoliation without further irritating your skin. I feel like this product is most similar to microdermabrasion in a bottle, so the crystals are very fine and gentle (but you should still always be gentle on your skin). Step 3 — Clay Mask YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Skin Reset Antioxidant Mask I always finish up a decongesting routine with a good clay mask. I recently picked up this YTTP mask which I find really helps to clear my pores but doesn’t dry out my skin at all. It has a pretty thin texture that slowly dries down, but doesn’t get “crackly.” This isn’t as decongesting as other masks, but it also isn’t as drying, so I feel it is a fair trade-off.
Caudalie is a brand that really surprised me. I went from thinking their products are only for the oldies to absolutely loving every single product I’ve tried! So so happy I gave caudalie a chance 😍 I’ve used the moisturizing mask and deep cleansing exfoliator a couple times now. The exfoliator is a little bit too abrasive for my skin but someone recommend using it with the foam cleanser so I have yet to try that! The mask however is very lovely and I immediately fell in love with it after the first time I used it. It actually kinda reminds me of summer fridays jet lag mask. Anyways, this mask is amazing at soothing dry, irritated skin and has been my go to recently. I use it like any other mask and usually keep it on for 20-25 minutes but it can also be used as an overnight mask. . The only thing I don’t really like and still trying to get used to is the strong scent in caudalie products. I’m slowly getting used to them but they can still get quite overwhelming sometimes 🙈
A Wash That Actually Works!
I started using this face was about a month ago after it was recommended to me in Ulta. It had worked WONDERS!! Claims: breakout fighting, clears dead skin cells + dirt + excess oils My thoughts: Ever since I started using this my breakouts have gone WAY down. You can barely see them! They are almost gone☺️ I would highly recommended this to anyone struggling with breakouts and clogged pores. (My pores are so much better- less clogged and smaller!!) 10/10- would recommend!

Aesop’s Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste: Your Guide
Aesop’s recent skincare line has been blowing up everybody’s feed; Instagram, Facebook, even Cherie! But is it really worth all the hype? Aesop is an indie-style brand that tends to use lesser-known natural ingredients and native herbs and remedies that have been used for thousands of years in Asia. The brand was originally out of Melbourne, Australia, but as they grew, they created a large HQ in the United States. People all over the world have been raving over Aesop’s products… but why? Here’s where this exfoliator comes in. The Aesop - Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste claims to do a couple of things: remove dead skin cells and soften the skin. To use, you should only need a little more than a pea-sized portion. Cleanse your face first and leave your face wet. Then, rub the product around your facial skin in small circles for about a minute. Rinse off, and continue with the rest of your routine. The product is a little wallet-heavy at $53, but most of the reviews are very nice and recommend the product immensely. The texture is very smooth albeit the superfine exfoliating dust, and it smells of rosemary and earthiness from the main ingredients, which are fine quartz, rosemary leaf, and lactic acid. ● Fine quartz has been used for thousands of years in skincare. The mineral is ground up into a very fine powder and then mixed into a smooth cream for exfoliation without tearing the skin. However, in recent years, there have been some claims that the quartz causes microtears in the skin. Despite these claims, all of them have remained unfounded and there is no evidence that the mineral would cause harm to the facial barrier. ● Rosemary leaf is great for two things; food, and skincare! Rosemary is a natural anti-inflammatory agent that helps to heal dark spots, burns, and reduces puffiness. When used in an exfoliator like this one, it mostly soothes the skin and softens it so that the dead skin cells may be removed without damaging the rest of the healthy skin. ● Finally, lactic acid. Lactic acid has been known for its part in fermentation, a process in which yeast is formed. Typically, yeast may actually cause acne and inflammation, but in this case, the lactic acid is not given time to ferment, therefore, it helps lift the dead skin off of the healthy skin for the quartz particles to scrub off the excess material. Overall, the ingredients, texture, scent, and packaging all work together in a great exfoliating melody. Some of the reviews state that this product doesn’t work very well for sensitive skin, but those with normal/oily skin, like myself, should use the paste without any problems.

St. Ives Scrubs 👎🏼
Here we go guys! I can already guess that most of you already know what I'm going to say about this product right here. I've used St. Ives face scrubs for years (primarily middle and high school years), before I saw the light. I tried it mostly because my older sisters were using it, and it seemed like what everyone was using as the drugstore go-to. It's created to help get rid of dead skin and exfoliate the surface of your skin, and this specific product is targeted towards blackhead control. The texture is almost like toothpaste to me, it's thick and green with fine grains that feel almost sandy. My experience with this product as a face scrub has been negative. St. Ives uses ground walnut shells in their products, which when applied to their face with the action of scrubbing causes micro-tears in the surface of your skin, which allows bacteria to settle in those small cuts and cause more acne and texture! Not good! For me, this product did not work to clear any of my blackheads. It did make my face feel smooth, however. I did not like it for the reason previously mentioned, that it invites bacteria into the skin and never gave me the results I wanted. In fact, it did more harm than good, by making my skin worse which made me use the product more to get rid of the acne which created a bad feedback loop (stem majors wya). I would definitley not recommend any physical exfoliators to anyone. Instead, hemical exfoliators using enzymes, AHAs, BHAs, or PHAs are the way to go! It's 2019! However, the one thing I will say about this product is that I do like using it on my body- specifically my legs before or after shaving to get extra smooth legs, and this is great especially if you're on a budget, since this is a drugstore product and very affordable at under $10. HOWEVER, as this product is marketed towards your face, I would give it a 0/10 for face use and a 7/10 for body use!
Instant glow while help fighing breakouts!!!
dermalogica - Clear Start Flashfoliant Foaming Exfoliator I have only been using this product for 11 days and I can not tell you how good the results are. It is a leave on chemical exfoliant to help clear out breakouts while giving you that natural glow. I usually apply this in the morning right after cleansing and then apply a light moisturizer to seal it in. Then quite often put my makeup on top if I am needing to leave the house. Make sure to apply sunscreen when using this product as tangerine peel extract will make your skin more sensitive when in the sun. The Clear Start range from Dermalogica is perfect for teenagers and people older who are beginning to try new skincare without breaking the bank! 8/10 recommend ❤ ingredients that make this product worth it!!! This product has a mixture of AHA's and BHA's which gently remove dead skin cells and oils. Salicylic Acid is a chamical exfoliant that penetrates into the skin and loves oil so it will break down the oil within your pores to leave you with a much softer and brighter complexion. Since it breaks down the oils it will help with removal of pimples and blackheads. While the tangerine peel extract will help brighten dull skin and get rid of scarring. Only reason why I put Acne breakout as a side effect, as once you begin to use this product the Salicylic acid will try and dissolve the oils and dead skin cells withon your pores which will lead to them rising to the top on your skin. The breakouts clear within a couple of days and soon you will have much softer and brighter skin.

Pore Minimizing 🍓 Face Wash
Fresh has always been a brand that I can count on, and I really have been enjoying using this cleanser 2x per week. First I want to point out two things that I think are really important before purchasing this. The first one is that this cleanser’s exfoliating particles are very small and dissolve with water quickly. If you’re looking for a very exfoliating cleanse, then this isn’t the product for you. Secondly, this smells so yummy and sweet but for people with sensitive skin I can definitely see this product giving a bad reaction so proceed with caution. I enjoy the way this exfoliating cleanser gently buffs away dead skin and the strawberry really tightens my pores without leaving my face feeling dry. It is a slightly runny cleanser but you only need a little bit to get a great clean. I would recommend this and the packaging is super cute too! fresh - Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash
