A Complete Skincare Guide for Oily Skin: Day & Night Routines
I used to be troubled by my skin type a lot because there were so many skin concerns. For example, I had to deal with extremely oily and acne-prone skin. To make things worse, I also have inner dryness. However, over the years, I have developed skincare routines that work well for my skin type. My morning and night routines are slightly different from each other because I want to target varying concerns that might arise during different times of the day. · AM I would start with a face wash for my morning routine to remove the dirt and sebum built up overnight. Then, I always use a lightweight face cream to lock in the moisture without suffocating my skin. Finally, I would put on sunscreen no matter the weather to protect my skin from UV rays. Face wash: NIVEA Clean Deeper Daily Wash Scrub NIVEA Clean Deeper Daily Wash Scrub is a cleanser that has exfoliating properties. It is in a gel-like texture with microbeads that physically scrubs off the dead skin on the skin. My skin feels cleansed and smooth after using it. However, it can be a bit too harsh for dry skin but perfect for oily skins because oily skins build up dead skin faster; thus, I enjoy using this daily to achieve clearer skin and more even skin texture. Moisturizer: CLINIQUE Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly Anti-Pollution I currently use this moisturizer every day because of its unusual texture. As the name suggests, it is a water-jelly type of face cream that feels very refreshing on the face and absorbs almost instantly into the skin. I chose the product for morning routine because of the anti-pollution properties that shield my skin from the outside world. I can feel that it creates a thin, film-like barrier on the skin to prevent dirt from clogging my pores, which is very helpful for stopping acne from forming. Sunscreen: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion Last but not least, sunscreen is a must in my morning routine. This sunscreen is an excellent product for oily skin because it leaves a lightweight, clean feel on the face. In the past, I have suffered breakouts from other sunscreens because they were too heavy and oily, which clogged my pores. I quite enjoy this product because it is water-resistant, which means that it is very long-lasting against my oily skin. · PM During night time, I tend to focus more on cleansing and deep hydration to remove impurities gathered on my face throughout the day and relief inner dryness. I begin with cleansing water to take off the sunscreen and dirt on the skin. I follow a double cleanse routine; therefore, I would use a face wash to wash off any remaining impurities. Lastly, I would apply a heavier cream than the one I use in the morning to soothe my skin and hydrate it on a deeper level. Cleansing water: BIODERMA - Sensibio H2O Soothing Micellar Cleansing Water This product is one of my favorites because it is gentle on the skin but has reliable cleaning power. It effectively removes makeup residue and sunscreen, and since it does not have any scent, it is ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Moisturiser: La Roche Posay Toleriane Sensitive Crème To end the day, I always rehydrate my skin with a thicker cream than the morning one. This specific cream is very gentle and soothing on the skin. I would wake up feeling my face being very hydrated, smooth, and plump. Although it is hydrating, it is not too heavy on the skin, which is perfect for oily skin with inner dryness.

Remove makeup or remove moisture
BIODERMA - Sensibio H2O Soothing Micellar Cleansing Water 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫: If you are looking for a quick cleanse of your makeup or sunscreen, this will definitely be your go to. It is liquidy and watery; all you need is a cotton pad or tissue, and wipe those nasties off! 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Micelles, whose composition is inspired by the skin’s lipids, are invisible cleansing micro-droplets. They have the ability to capture impurities while preserving the skin’s natural protective film. Plus calming ingredients like Aloe, Green tea and cucumber, this is suitable for all skin types! 𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: I am more of an oil cleanser person, even so, when I used this, it was very convenient and quick to remove the nasties of the day. I personally do not think it is recommended for heavy makeup though, but light makeup and daily SPF will be easily wiped off using this. I always double cleanse anyway, so this is just my first step. One thing I really like is that this is: Alcohol-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, sulfate-free, allergen-free, fragrance-free, pregnancy-friendly, non-comedogenic and oil-free. Phew...long list of non nasties! Which is great! ✔️Bioderma only uses Ingredients that will actually Help Your Skin - No Fillers! They are widely available, so do check them out in your local area.
Best Cleanser Awards to my favs!!
As the first step of skincare, the importance of cleansing should not be ignored. But there are so many cleansers with similar ingredients and uses and makes it hard to choose the right one (or ones). These three awards are for my favorite cleaners that stand out among all I have tried. Best Daily Acne Cleanser--Neutrogena Oil-free Acne Wash This cleansing gel for acne-prone skin contains salicylic acid, which is a perfect ingredient for me(I have oily skin) to unclog pores. Though there is pink grapefruit extract and it is pink indeed, it smells to me more like mango or pineapple but still like it. For me, it is not as drying as other so-called “acne-skin-friendly “cleansers that make you feel dry and stripped at all. I have used this for two weeks, and a little goes a long way especially with its gel-like texture. Feels really clean yet refreshing on the face and pretty worthy! Best Resurfacing Cleanser--NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash I have to say this cleansing foam is so powerful and strong and even not suitable for many. Before using this, I have tried NeoStrata Facial Cleanser and it was gentler than this foam. It has a large amount of glycolic acid (an AHA) and lactobionic acid (a BHA and also a strong antioxidant) to clean pores, remove dead skin, and prepare skin for optimal benefits of the following routine. I just use this every other day right now by building tolerance, and the result is quite obvious: my face got softer and smoother after each use. This foam is worthy for those with low potential for irritation to try to receive a much smoother skin. Best Exfoliating Cleanser--Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser This cleanser comes more directly with micro-particles to exfoliate skin. Compared to NeoStrata foam, this Clarins scrub cleanser simply exfoliates all dead skin without leaving any harsh feeling on face. It is easy to cleanse all excess oil on my face with this and wash away but not over-drying at all. The orange color and scent are very refreshing and soothing, and this has been my first step of mask ritual for a long time. Clarins has my heart.

Oily / Acne-Prone Skin Deep Cleanse Routine
Every once in a while, it is important to do a deep cleanse for your skin to prevent sebum and dead skin build up that will lead to break outs and enlarged pores. It is like doing house cleaning, which is necessary for everyone regardless of your skin type. However, since my face produces a lot of oil, I tend to break out more, and I have developed a deep cleanse routine that really helped with alleviating my acne problems. Step 1 – Cleanse Product: Neutrogena (Deep Clean Facial Cleanser Normal to Oily Skin) Firstly, I need to get rid of all the dirt and impurities on the surface of my face to get into cleaning the deeper layers of my skin. I use this cleanser because it has a strong cleaning power that removes the oiliness of my face without stripping off the hydration. It is in a gel texture that lathers into foam. Step 2 – Exfoliate Product: Dermalogica (Daily Microfoliant) This step is to get rid of all the dead skin cells being built up on the face that are the main causes of rough skin, dullness and acnes. The product has become one of my favourite products because my skin feels much brighter and smoother every time after I have used it. It is in a white powder form and turns into foam when it touches water. Because it is meant to be a daily exfoliate, it is very gentle on the face, however, I would not recommend exfoliating every day because it will destroy your skin’s barrier, and I have noticed that my skin becomes more fragile and red if I use it too often. Step 3 – Detox Product: Estée Lauder (NightWear Plus 3 Minute Detox Mask) I always like to follow up with a clay mask that draws out impurities from deep under the skin and helps control the oiliness of my face. This visibly reduces black heads of my skin if I keep up with this routine regularly. This product smells like fresh cucumber, which I enjoy, and has a very cooling sensation on the face. What I like the most about this product compared to other clay masks is that it dries very quickly because it is so thin. It leaves me with a clearer and smoother skin just after 3 minutes, which is great for lazy people like me. Step 4 – Sooth & Hydrate Product: Avene (Eau Thermale Spring Water) I use this mist to add another layer of moisture before I lock everything in with a moisturiser and to sooth my skin after exfoliation. The mist spreads very evenly, covering every part of my face, and feels very refreshing and cooling. Step 5 – Moisturiser Product: La Roche Posay (Toleriane Sensitive Crème) Lastly, I will rehydrate myself with a thicker cream than I normally use that has soothing properties to comfort my skin after going through the hash cleansing steps before. My skin feels very hydrated, smooth and plump after I use this cream. Also, it is not too heavy on the skin, and has no scent.

Tale of Two Reactions: Buyer beware!
CLINIQUE - CLINIQUE Liquid Facial Soap CLINIQUE - CLINIQUE Liquid Facial Soap Clinique Mild Facial Soap (Dry to Combo Skin) was my godsend in my 20s. I couldn’t be paid to switch cleansers; it was so reliable, effective and affordable. It’s been a while since I’ve used it but on a trip abroad this past Christmas, I realized I forgot my cleanser and while at the airport duty-free I decided to give Clinique another go. This time, however, I opted for the Extra Mild (Dry to Very Dry Skin) version because my skin is much drier than it once was and it was also mid-Winter. What an awful idea. The Extra Mild formula is more of a cleansing milk, and it goes on very light. I never really felt like it fully cleaned my skin, but I really loved how hydrating it felt. At first, it didn’t irritate my skin, and my skin was so soft after use. After about 2.5 weeks of daily use, I got a tiny pimple on my chin. Nothing too concerning at that moment, so I continued using it. Within a week of that initial pimple, I began noticing multiple, VERY painful lumps on my cheeks and nose - cystic acne! I used some spot treatments and lots of cold compresses to help the swelling. A day or two later the skin around my eye was so swollen and discoloured that it looked like a very minor black eye. I stopped using all skin care products and only used anti inflammatory creams and ice packs. After 7-10 days, all the swelling was gone and it was no longer painful. All that remained was multiple very dark spots (hyper pigmentation) where the bumps once were. I can’t say for certain what in this soap caused this, or if it would even happen again. All I know is I haven’t ever used that soap again and I haven’t had a single issue since. The rest of my products haven’t changed, the only variable was that particular cleanser. TL;DR - While I would recommend the Mild version in a heart beat, I would caution the use of the Extra Mild formula. You live, you learn. And the spots are almost gone now🥳 Would love to know if anyone had experiences something similar with any other products?✌🏼

Oily / Inner Dryness Skin Care Routine
I have always resented the fact that I have oily skin because it made me break out more often and left enlarged pores on my face. At the same time, I have inner dryness and if it’s not addressed, my face tends to produce more oil, which makes my skin concerns worse. However, over the years, I have come to terms with my skin and found a daily routine that works well for my skin type. Step 1 – CleanseProduct: Bioderma (Sensibio H20 Solution Micellaire)I like to go through a double cleanse system every night and I always start with cleansing water to remove the oil and dirt off my face to prevent build up that will clog my pores and lead to breakouts. This water is my holy grail item because it is very gentle on the skin yet effective in removing makeup residue or sunscreen, which I would apply every day. It does not have any scent, which is ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Step 2 – Wash FaceProduct: Neutrogena (Deep Clean Facial Cleanser Normal to Oily Skin) Even though Bioderma’s cleansing water claims that it does not require wash-off, I still like to use a cleanser to get rid of any residue. This cleanser starts in a gel form, then lathers into a gentle foam when it touches water. I would have preferred it to be more foamy. However, it is just as effective in removing all the impurities and oil off my face, so I have no complaints. It has a citrusy scent, which I find quite pleasant, and my face feels very clean after using it without being stripped of moisture, so I quite enjoy this product. Step 3 – Soothing and Hydrating MistProduct: Avene (Eau Thermale Spring Water)I use this mist day and night, right after cleansing, to sooth my skin after the double cleanses and target my inner dryness. The mist spreads very evenly, covering every part of my face, and feel very refreshing and cooling, which wakes me right up in the morning. Step 4 – MoisturiserProduct: Clinique (Moisture Surge 72-hour auto-replenishing hydrator)Using an moisturizer is an essential last step of the skincare routine because it seals off the moisture we have applied beforehand and acts as a protective barrier for the skin. I chose this moisturizer because it is very light weight, in a gel texture, but hydrating enough to address my inner dryness, which prevents my face from over-producing oil. It also does not have any scent, so very safe for sensitive skin.

Product that helped ME with acne!
CeraVe - AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 This product worked miracles for my skin, and got rid of my pimples when nothing else was helping. I used this both morning and night as a moisturizer, and it helped me so much. You can find this on amazon, or many drugstores, and is pretty affordable for a sunscreen/moisturizer. ⚠️❗️PLEASE keep in mind that the products that work for me, may not work for everyone. Everyone’s skin is different, and I cannot promise you that this will work. :) Cetaphil - Daily Facial Cleanser This is the cleanser I use twice a day. I have oily skin, so the dryness that some people might feel when using this didn’t really effect me, but if you have dryer skin, I would recommend the: Cetaphil - Gentle Skin Cleanser or the CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser I really hope this helped anyone struggling with their skin!! Remember, acne doesn’t make you any less beautiful ♥️

The Benefits of Thermal Water for Oily and Acne-Prone Skin
Thermal water is a magical ingredient that does wonders for my skin type. I have oily and sensitive skin, as well as inner dryness. My skin is also acne-prone. Ever since I discovered products containing thermal water, my skin has improved a lot. It has been calmer and has less redness and inflammation thanks to the healing properties of thermal water. I found out about this ingredient through the brand LA ROCHE-POSAY, which was introduced to me by my friend a few years back and the focus of this article. This brand is trusted and recommended by dermatologists worldwide, and my personal experience is that it truly lives up to its reputation thanks to the thermal water ingredient. Currently, my favorite products containing thermal water are the Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel and the Effaclar Duo Plus, and using them in combination delivers fantastic results. LA ROCHE-POSAY - Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser for Oily Skin This is a very gentle yet effective cleanser that does not irritate my sensitive skin. It leaves my face feeling cleaned and soft without stripping off my skin. This cleanser is in a clear gel texture and lathers up nicely to a creamy finish even though it is soapless, thus, perfectly safe for sensitive skin. The thermal water ingredient in this product calms my skin; therefore, I feel comfortable using this day and night. LA ROCHE-POSAY - Effaclar Duo Dual Acne Treatment Because I have acne-prone skin, I often have a lot of hyperpigmentations on my face. This corrective moisturizer claims to target blemishes, imperfections, and marks, which I agree to a certain extent. The result is not drastic, but my skin does feel brighter and clearer. It has quite a thick texture but absorbs quickly into the skin and does not leave an oily finish. And it is perfect for my skin because it is oily and dry on the inside. It can hydrate my skin, and my face feels smooth and matte, which I love. I believe that the thermal water ingredient reduces the redness and imperfections of my skin. Overall, I would recommend people with similar skin type and skin concerns to try out this ingredient. My skin has benefited from it.
