My Favorite Coral-Reef Safe Sunscreens! ☀️🏖

My Favorite Coral-Reef Safe Sunscreens! ☀️🏖

Coral-reef safe sunscreens are a thing and you should definitely get on board. Sunscreen protects our skin from sun damage, but can also be harmful to our coral reefs and sea! The culprit ingredients are Oxybenzone & Octinoxate. Supergoop recently reformulated a lot of their sunscreens to exclude Octinoxate so they are coral-reef safe! Just some general sunscreen tips: - You need at least half a teaspoon of sunscreen to properly protect your face and neck - You need at least a shot glass full of sunscreen to properly protect your whole body - Don’t forget about your neck or your ears - WEAR. SUNSCREEN. EVERY. DAY. (even if you’re just going to be at home - you can still get sun damage from sitting near a window!) Here is my collection of coral-reef safe sunscreens: Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40
$34 This is a cult-favorite sunscreen. It has a slippy, smoothing primer-like feel and looks clear on the skin. It also leaves your skin velvety smooth with a satin finish. It’s my favorite sunscreen during the summer to diminish any excess shine and keep my face looking extra smooth. Supergoop! - Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40
$36 If you have dry skin or LOVE an extra glowy finish, this is your perfect sunscreen! It has a tint when you pour out the product but doesn’t offer any coverage on the skin. It also has a pearlescence to the formula that makes your skin look super dewy without glitter or shimmer. This is sometimes a little too much on me as my T-zone can get quite shiny on its own. Instead, I use this as an additional product, after applying another sunscreen all over my face, and blend it only on my cheekbones for a natural looking highlight! Supergoop! - CC Cream Daily Correct Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen
in Light $39 This is an amazing sunscreen product that offers lots of coverage. Personally, I don’t like super heavy coverage products so I don’t use this as my sunscreen step. There’s no way I use enough of this product at a time to actually protect my face and neck. What I do is apply another sunscreen first all over my face, and then I’ll blend a thin layer of this CC cream on top for some light coverage. Supergoop recently reformulated this CC cream and I’m super curious to try it out!

ElizabethhhlovesOoh I’ve tried the matte before but I found it a little drying on my skin! I feel like Unseen offers more of a slip and feels more emollient!

Supergoop! Sunscreens: my favs and flops
To start, I just started seriously using SPF about 6 months ago (I’m 22, for shame) because I absolutely HATED how sunscreen sat on my skin. It was always too greasy, too weirdly dry, or waaaay too thick and a bit difficult to spread around my face (like Neutrogena - Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF30 ). I’ve tried really dermatologist recommended sunscreens like elta md SKINCARE - UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 (SORRY I know it’s a cult fav), but even that was too oily and would slide around my face all day like a slip-n-slide. I also have sensitive & acne prone skin so it was never worth it to me to put on this gross sunscreen that would forever break me out and cause redness. They were all the same. Enter: Supergoop! My holy grail. My precious. My savior. The only sunscreen that would comfortably sink into my skin that I couldn’t ever feel. HOWEVER, not all Supergoop! products are created equal, as I’ve found out. My least favorite: Supergoop! - Superscreen Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 40 PA+++ . This lotion feels like soft, fluffy butter on my fingers and spreads so smoothly on my face. I was disappointed when I was left with an oily sheen that never soaked in (tested 8hr multiple times). It is greasy to the touch—my hair kept sticking to my face kind of greasy. It is superficially moisturizing instead of deeply. SAD! Maybe better for super dry skin? A truly great product: Supergoop! - CC Cream Daily Correct Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen . This CC cream is really awesome. It’s lightweight but gives a surprising amount of coverage! Blends well and camoflouges all my redness. It’s also not drying at all. Special brownie points for not breaking me out—this is a gentle mineral sunscreen :) I find this perfect for summer because it’s hot and regular foundation would just melt off my face and crease . -1 star because after about 4 hours the product begins to break up. It also doesn’t have much oil control for my fellow combo/oily peeps. Perhaps it’ll be better in the winter when the heat won’t break it up?! • My daily sunscreen: Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40 . I LOVE THIS! Shake the bottle for 5-10 seconds and the tinted sunscreen comes out like fluffy clouds. It minimizes pores, always looks like a natural matte (not a dry matte), evens skin tone, is water resistant, and sinks so naturally and comfortably into my skin. This is especially in my 🤍 because my pores are ginormous and I need that lil extra somethin. This makes my face look truly poreless. And it’s a mineral sunscreen so I never break out. Apply in gentle presses for pill-less results. A game changer: Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 . The ultimate sunscreen. That’s it. What’re your thoughts on these four sunscreens? Are there others I should try? What are your favorites? 🤔

Update
Post acne scarring🥴 Ultimately, “less is more” is why my skin isn’t breaking out daily. No more painful, cystic acne. I got my skin adjusted to the bare minimum.👍🏼 I slowly introduce new products. No acids (Salicylic, Lactic, etc…), no exfoliating, no topicals. This stage of my skin journey is to allow my skin to heal & do what it’s supposed to do without disrupting the healing process. I still provide my skin with the necessary ingredients needed to assist with barrier repair & a healthy biome. Ceramides, Probiotics, Hyaluronic Acid, Colloidal Oatmeal, Niacinamide, Green Tea. * If anybody could recommend any more barrier repair products &/or ingredients i’m all 👂🏼 ✨Self Luv/ Self Care✨ With consistency, comes results💋

SPF Please
I live where the sun shines virtually every day! Therefore, my routine is photo protective. From my morning Vitamin C + antioxidant serums, to my evening gentle acid exfoliants, I have built my skincare routine around anti-aging preventatives. I recently began working topical retinol at low % into my routine and get monthly Y:ag laser facials to stimulate and encourage collagen production. I’m about to turn 26, and I am very lucky to have plenty of collagen and few wrinkles. I spent a lot of my early 20s breaking the cardinal rules of anti-aging including smoking cigarettes (I’ve been nicotine free for over a year now!) and skipping SPF most days. I even had a brief bout of tanning booth addiction 😟 Now I use spf products as a daily routine. I was committed to Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 until a girl at Ulta recommended StriVectin - Full Screen SPF 30 Clear Finish which has a lower SPF and similar consistency as Unseen. I’ve also tried the Supergoop! - 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40AND Supergoop! - Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40, neither of which I was really crazy about. The gel/primer consistency of both Unseen Sunscreen and the Strivectin spf are more conducive to my skincare routine and they both sink into my skin without leaving a greasy feeling. Now that I have an office job and wfh, I’m spending about 10 hours/day staring at two huge computer monitors, so I think I’ll stick with the Strivectin screen that also includes Vitamins A, B, C, and Pro-Vitamin D (?) and claims for protect against UVA/UVB, Blue Light (computer screens), and pollution. It’s affordable, comfortable to wear, a little goes a long way, and performs well under makeup when I’m wearing it. The lower spf isn’t a problem for me because I’m not standing in direct sunlight or anything. I think if I had my previous job working outside everyday I’d want a higher spf. Another line of defense I like to fall back on are SPF tinted moisturizers. A while back I had tried the PÜR - 4-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 which is honestly such a dream. This is a photo of me wearing it on a midday walk. It’s low to medium coverage, buildable, hydrating, and stays put! I don’t have very oily skin or especially dry skin so I feel it is a happy medium for those with normal or combo skin types. By no means is it full coverage. I slap this on (using my fingers to apply) if I’m planning to go for a walk in the sunshine or on a hike, in addition to my base layer of SPF. Of course, the best preventative is keeping the sun off your face at all costs, so you’ll usually see me on the trails with one of my favorite floppy hats, or sometimes if I’m feeling jazzy - my Bluestone Sunshield (see a few posts back). Do you wear SPF every day? Have you made any lifestyle changes for the sake of beauty/anti-aging? Share your tips or thoughts below!

Chemical Sunscreen Verzuz
One thing about me: I love a mineral sunscreen because of the way it interacts with the skin as a physical barrier on top versus being absorbed like a chemical sunscreen, but I will say one of these sunscreens is a strong contender for my favorite. Any guesses which one?👀 Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 A chemical sunscreen after my own heart. The first time I put this on, I was amazed by how smooth it felt. It didn’t smell strong or remind me of the beach. If I wore makeup, I could see this easily being layered with my other products. Down side: As minimal as it was, I have felt some irritation using this sunscreen and it’s no surprise because it’s a chemical sunscreen (chemical sunscreens have a lot more ingredients compared to mineral ones, so it can be hard to pinpoint what ingredient causes a reaction if you have one). FENTY SKIN - Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen I wanted to love it, I did, but I’m scared of fragrance especially when I have to put it on my skin. This moisturizing spf does smell sweet. This one actually reminded me of my beach visits because it has that typical sunscreen scent once the floral one wares off. Some I’m still dealing with my acne, I don’t want to take too many chances with the products I use, so overall I’ll be sticking to mineral sunscreen. What have y’all experienced with chemical sunscreens?

Supergoop Basics
Supergoop! - Play Everyday Lotion SPF 30 with Sunflower Extract The Play Moisturizer is definitely my favorite and now a daily product for me. It’s like a hybrid between sunscreen and moisturizer texture. Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 The Unseen Sunscreen is probably one of their most well known products, and that’s because it’s such a good sunscreen! The kind that once you try this one you won’t go back to your classic sunscreen. Supergoop! - Defense Refresh (Re)setting Mist SPF 40 And finally, the Defense Refresh is a mist that helps you reapply and touch up your SPF throughout the day! Perfect if you’ve got a full face of makeup on and just need a quick spritz. It doesn’t feel like much when you spray it on though, can be a good or bad thing.

Brush your sunscreen
Brush your sunscreen
Brush On Block BRUSHONBLOCK - Touch of Tan Mineral Powder Sunscreen SPF 30 is powered by natural dry powdered sunscreen with no chemical sunscreen ingredients that you can brush under or above makeup. It is not any tanning powder but it does come in a hint of warm color when protecting your face from UVA, UVB, and IRA (infrared A) rays. With the dispensing brush, It is very convenient to apply and it will not give me greasy texture, messy hand, or white residue. I love it is small and portable that I can just put it in my bag and go. This new formula is tinted with a very light warm color so I use this as a touch-up powder as well. It doesn't stink my eyes and will not soak into clothes when applying it onto my neck (yes, you NEED SPF for the neck too, don't forget). It is safe for sensitive skin and children. It is paraben, PABA, and phthalate-free. BRUSHONBLOCK - Brush on Block Protective Lip Oil 32 BRUSHONBLOCK - Translucent Mineral Powder Sunscreen

Coola Make Up Setter
Coola Make Up Setter
This is a make up setter and sunscreen in one! I’m absolutely obsessed with this and love to travel with it. It definitely is thicker and you can spray a couple of layers for sun protection. It dries really nicely and is matte so it works well with a light layer of powder before hitting up the beach for the day. It is a little pricey and does definitely smell like sunscreen so I wouldn’t suggest it for daily use (unless you’re outside of course).

Supergoop! Defense Refresh Set
Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist that I got. 🌟 I took this with me on my overnight trip and it was really quick & easy to use. I was a little wary of the spray form because I had a feeling it would come out a bit stronger than other mists I use. 🧳 It did spritz our firmly but evenly. It does have a bit of minty fragrance which I wasn’t expecting. It wasn’t unpleasant though. 😊 Overall, I like it but I think I prefer a cream sunscreen. This mist, however, is ideal for traveling & for reapplication when I’m outside for extended periods of time on the weekend. 👍🏾

Brand Spotlight: Supergoop!
Brand Spotlight: Supergoop!
I discovered Supergoop through the “skinstagram” community (does using this term make me a boomer?) and loved their mission and that they’re a brand dedicated to SPF—that immediately increased my trust in them. However be careful what you wish for... Products I’ll be reviewing: Shimmershade SPF 30 Glow Stick SPF 50 Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 MY FAVES: Supergoop! - Shimmershade Eyeshadow Shimmershade SPF 30 Eyeshadow: this is just an incredible daily cream eyeshadow formula. I hate the heavy feeling of facial SPF on my eyelids and this came in CLUTCH. It feels just like a lightweight cream eyeshadow and looks amazing. I have the shade “” and it looks incredibly seamless when blended in with my fingers for that “next level” eye look. The pot has a ton of product in it for the price point ($24) and I highly recommend you try it at least once. Get a sample from Sephora! Supergoop! - Glow Stick SPF 50 Glow Stick SPF 50: I was really hesitant about this one—I purchased it as a chemical SPF option that wouldn’t pill under makeup. Surprisingly, I love this formula. It doesn’t sit on top of your skin and feels super lightweight. It’s also really easy to reapply during the day! I like that it’s a solid stick formula so it won’t leak or spill in your bag. My only real complaint is the packaging. You push the product up from the bottom and it’s just kind of hard to control at time how much you push up. Like a push pop without being able to push it back down. It also lasts FOREVER so $25 doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. NOT SO MUCH - LEAST FAVE: Supergoop! - Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40: this is a translucent blurring SPF formula. The texture is SO silky. I loved how it applied to my skin...but any time I use this, my skin immediately breaks out in a rash. I’m not sure why this happens. I’ve heard so many great things about this product but my experiences haven’t been great, and at $34, I can’t justify the price at all, leaving it in the bottom tier of this brand Spotlight. What are your favorites from Supergoop?

Fun in the Sun ☀️
Fun in the Sun ☀️
I live in Florida and the weather these past few weeks has been... horrendous. It’s been over 90 degrees everyday and it feels like your face is going to melt off. If I’m honest I used to not really care about sunscreen but now I feel like I’m breaking some kind of law if I leave the house without it 🥴 Supergoop is one of the first more expensive brands of sunscreen I decided to try and I admit I spent a while picking one & finally decided on this one. Supergoop! - Play Everyday Lotion 50 Default Title ☀️ One thing I love about this sunscreen is that it blends smoothly into the skin and doesn’t leave any white cast for me. ☀️ It’s great under make up or alone because of how nice it blends in. ☀️ My only downside is that even if blends well, it’s still very thick and feels more like a beach day thick sunscreen (hence the name play!) instead of an everyday, barely there, sunscreen. Supergoop! - Supergoop! x Rebecca Taylor Setting Mist ☀️ I randomly found this setting spray at TJ-Maxx for only $7.99! I had been searching for something easier to apply with make up and my luck I spotted this one. ☀️ I’ve only used it about twice but the first thing I noticed is how good it smells! ☀️ The product sprays evenly, settles in nicely and dries pretty quick. ☀️ I love thats it’s so easy to take on the go & so easy to re-apply throughout the day & mixes great with a tinted moisturizer that also has SPF in it!
