This or That: Best Product for Shiny Hair
This or That: Best Product for Shiny Hair
My hair is wavy, very prone to frizz and I have a lot of baby hairs that won’t quit. Lately, I’ve noticed that it’s lacking in the shine department. Suddenly in dire need of shiny hair, I decided to scroll through Sephora’s hair bestsellers to see which products could help. I landed on Kerastase’s Elixir Ultime Oil Serum (which has 4 ½ stars and ranks in at $50) and Amika’s Supernova Moisture and Shine Hair Cream (which has 4 stars and ranks in at $25). A little about the products: KÉRASTASE - Elixir Ultime Oil Serum is designed to add hydration and prevent breakage for anti-frizz shine using a blend of maize oil, procaxi oil, and argan oil. It can be used before, during, and after blow-drying for frizz-free, super-shiny, and hydrated hair. amika: - Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream , on the other hand, is a weightless, conditioning leave-in cream that adds shine, detangles, tames frizz, and protects hair from heat styling. Designed to be used on damp hair, it helps to boost hair's ability to retain moisture, while providing a silky, smooth texture. A heat activated complex restores shine and smoothness to hair. Rules of the experiment: To ensure that the results were the same, I made sure to use both on damp hair that had been washed with the same shampoo and conditioner. I also used both after using Drybar’s Velvet Hammer leave-in, which I always use for frizz and adding a little extra hydration. I also airdried my hair on both days. Results and thoughts: Kerastase is literally liquid gold. It has a lovely, luxurious scent and is thicker than your average hair serum because of its oil-serum hybrid. This not only added a healthy shine to my hair but I also found that it made it feel so soft. I’ve used it in the past on its own and found that my ends were still a little dry and found that it works best with a hydrating leave-in – it mixes well with others, which I love. My hair can be prone to oiliness and I was afraid to apply the product to my roots. To prevent excess oil and shine, I focused application to the bottoms and then applied the last bits to the roots. This worked really well. Overall, it helped tame minor frizz and really added some shine into my hair. I will definitely be repurchasing. Amika’s isn’t my fave. I really wanted to like this formula because of the price, lovely scent and its gorgeously hydrating texture, but I found that it didn’t really do much. I didn’t notice any increase in shine or hydration and felt like my hair remained the same. Like with Kerastase’s Elixir, I have also tried this solo before and didn’t think it was very hydrating and wanted to see how it performed with a hydrating base – it didn’t mix well with the Drybar leave-in and left my hair feeling hard and sticky. Not my favorite hair product out there and will not be repurchasing.

Is blue light-blocking skincare a fad?
Is blue light-blocking skincare a fad?
With screen time at an all-time high and research suggesting that overexposure to blue light can cause premature aging in the skin, brands have been creating blue light-blocking skincare products to reverse the damage and keep skin healthy and protected. Like the UV rays that are emitted from the sun, blue light from screens has been found to create free radical damage and can potentially result in a weaker skin barrier, redness and irritation, rashes, and dark spots. A lot of people see blue light skincare as a fad, but I think that this trend has a lot of validity to it. And as someone that owns a pair of blue light-blocking eyeglasses, I believe that my skin should get the same protection as my eyes. My skin is oily/acne-prone and get be really sensitive/redness-prone and I started using blue light-blocking skincare as a means to neutralize redness and get a more even complexion. I’ve been trying some products goodhabit, which is a line that exclusively caters to blue light overexposure, and here are my thoughts: goodhabit - Glow Potion Oil Serum I love a good serum, especially one that promises to deliver a glow. This serum is fortified with the brand’s BLU5 technology, which minimizes and helps prevent future signs of aging caused by artificial blue light, and a blend of antioxidants to boost radiance in the skin. It is also great for improving bounce and elasticity, tone and texture, and hydration. I was a little nervous to try this serum because of its oil-serum formula, which I was afraid would clog my pores since it’s thicker than traditional serums and oils have a tendency to cause breakouts, but I’ve found that it vibes well with acne-prone skin and hasn’t been breaking me out. I haven’t been using it long enough to notice a glow yet, but I can vouch for its hydration properties; it’s really hydrating and makes my skin feel quenched and soothed. I would recommend it to a friend that wants to get into the blue light game but I can’t say it’s my favorite serum – BTW: I got the mini size which is $28 and the full-size is $80.goodhabit - Clean Scene Micellar Gel Before this product, I thought that all micellar products had to be water formulas, but this gel formula has been a game-changer for me. It’s got a gel serum-like feel to it and it’s really great for taking off makeup. It comes in a pump bottle and I’ve found that I don’t use as much product since its dispensed like this – I feel like I go through micellar water so fast, anyone else? This is also formulated with goodhabit’s BLU5 technology and it is super gentle on the skin—even on the eyes! It takes off makeup so fast and nicely and I’ve been using it as a first step in my double-cleansing routine since I ran out of cleansing balm. As for its blue light-neutralizing effects, I haven’t noticed anything profound but I like this more as a makeup remover than a blue light fix. It also contains encapsulated hyaluronic acid beads and delivers a fresh burst of hydration on contact to promote a softer complexion without that stripping, over-cleansed feeling. I got the mini size just to test it out, but I will definitely be repurchasing the full size and I’d recommend this to a friend for sure. My takeaway: Even if you don’t believe that blue light skincare works, I think that blue light-blocking products can still make excellent additions to any routine because they boast skin-healthy, antioxidant-rich ingredients, which promote healthier skin overall and will help it in the long run. There is still so much we don’t know about blue light and it’s hard to pinpoint the damage it can cause/ if blue light products are actually working but I feel better knowing that I’ve stepped up my antioxidant protection.

The easiest way to cover up acne scars & pimples
The easiest way to cover up acne scars & pimples
I have acne-prone skin and latelyyyyyy I’ve been getting some gnarly cystic pimples. Since I can’t quite breakdown what’s causing this resurge in cystic acne, I’ve been getting super stressed out and have been guilty of popping and prodding some of the big mamas that have been coming up to say hi. But as we all know, popping leads to scarring and scarring is so hard to hide under makeup, especially when they’re so big, scabbing over and purple. I haven’t exactly mastered covering up acne scars, but I have found that it comes down a strategic layering technique and a lot of powder. To start, I always prep the affected area with a hydrating primer but if the scar is really raised and textured I like to use Weleda Skin Food directly on it because I don’t want the scar to cause a dry patch. Then, I add a dab of concealer over it and blend it out and apply powder on top of it. Then, I’ll carry on with the rest of my complexion makeup and apply foundation and concealer and lock them both in with the powder. When layering, I’ve found that it’s important to watch how you use your brush. If you just sweep it over the scar, then you’ll quickly find that the product will move and it won’t build on top of it the way you want it. Instead, dab the brush and the product on and tap. Sometimes I’ll use my finger to blend my concealer and tap it in. I also try to avoid matte and drying formulas over the acne scars I’m trying to cover since I don’t want any peeling or dry spots but I’ve seen other people recommend it. These are my favorite products for covering acne scars: WELEDA - Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream – a little goes a long way. If you use a lot, it can make you look oily and it has made me breakout in the past. MAKE UP FOR EVER - Ultra HD Self-Setting Concealer FENTY BEAUTY - Pro Filt'r Hydrating Longwear Foundation laura mercier - Translucent Loose Setting Powder – I like to use a small highlight brush instead of a big fluffy powder brush for this because I want more of a focused of powder application.

Elemis’ New Cleanser Is Halloween-Approved
Elemis’ New Cleanser Is Halloween-Approved
Pumpkins aren’t just a yummy addition to your lattes in the fall; they’re also really great for exfoliating the skin and keeping it nice and even. This fall-favorite ingredient is rich in zinc, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and E, which are loaded with antioxidants and can do everything from boost brightness, reduce redness, neutralize free radical damage, and fight wrinkles. It gets its exfoliating properties from its fruit enzymes, which help remove dead skin cells and boast a softer, smoother complexion. ELEMIS - Superfood AHA Glow Cleansing Butter I’ve been loving Elemis’ new Superfood AHA Glow Cleansing Butter, which is a cleansing balm hybrid and designed to cleanse the skin while also brightening it and nourishing it. Pumpkin is the all-star ingredient here, as well as AHA-rich Acerola Cherry, hydrating Mango Butter and fatty acid-rich Chia Seed Oil. Together, these ingredients promote exfoliation, hydration, and nourishment and can be used as cleanser, makeup remover or mask. The texture is unlike other cleansing balms I’ve used in the past. It’s thick and goopy as opposed to having the balmy/salve-y texture that most do. But it’s thicker than most masks as well. I love that the product is versatile and I’ve been loving it as a makeup remover/cleansing balm and use it as the first step in my double cleansing routine. My skin is acne-prone and can be sensitive if I’m too aggressive with it, so it’s important that my cleansing routine is gentle but effective so I can get rid of pore-clogging agents and excess oil without stripping my skin and causing irritation. It leaves your skin feeling nice and clean and soft but since it’s got a chemical exfoliation element to it, I’ve found that it’s too harsh for my skin and I’ve been getting red and hot after using it. It’s definitely not kind for the eyes so be careful when taking off eye makeup. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this to people with sensitive skin.

My First Zero-Waste Makeup Buy
My First Zero-Waste Makeup Buy
We’re in an exciting time for beauty now that more brands have been prioritizing sustainability. One cosmetic product that it blowing my mind with its commitment to eco-friendly products is the blush and highlight Balmies from clean beauty brand Axiology. They’re designed to be zero-waste and are wrapped in recyclable paper instead of a plastic tube. Even the case they come in can be recycled, which is amazing! AXIOLOGY - Lip-To-Lid Balmies I got the Of The Earth Trio (Caramel, Nude Plum and Cherry) and I’m loving these little balms. They’re your average crayon formula and design but smaller than others on the market. This trio is described as having desert spice and warm earthy vibes, which I am very into, and each crayon can be used on the cheeks, lips, or eyes depending on the look you’re going for. Compared to other highlight and blush crayons, these are smaller and thinner, which is because of their minimal packaging and tube-less/capless design. According to the website, their size is actual the standard size, but traditional packaging bulks them up more. The formula is also a bit dryer than others I’ve tried. But unlike similar products, the Balmies are formulated without synthetic fragrance, alcohol, fragrance, gluten and soy and are cruelty-free and vegan. The brand sticks by a 10 ingredients or less motto and also doesn’t use palm oil, which isn’t harvested in the most eco-friendliest of ways. Instead, the Balmies contain oils, butters, and antioxidants such as elderberry, hemp, and plum oil to nourish, heal and hydrate skin. As I mentioned before, the formula wasn’t as creamy as I thought it would be and fell on the drier side. I applied the crayon straight to my cheeks, eyes and lips and was afraid that it wasn’t going to blend out nicely, but then I used my finger and the warmth helped move the product and it ended up looking really natural and seamless. If you’re using it on the lips, I will say that the it looked more like a tinted balm than a lipstick - it looked like a blurred, sheer tint rather than full-on lipstick. Since the formula is more on the drier side, it made it a little hard to blend out on the lips – so definitely prep with a lip balm. The Trio is $36 and the Balmies on their own are $14 each. $36 is a lot for how little they are, but I feel like their clean formula and sustainable packaging are worth it in the long run. Overall, I love these Balmies and I’m so impressed by how sustainable and eco-friendly they are. What are some of your favorite eco-friendly makeup finds? #CherieCreator

When it comes to my ~professional~ glam, I like to keep things minimal but still make sure to contour and highlight the appropriate areas – the goal is a soft glow that accentuates your features without looking too much. I think it’s also important to apply powder, especially if you’re like me and have oily skin and are prone to sweat when you get nervous lol. Keeping shine in mind, I like to opt for mattifying complexion products and powder formulas when it comes to bronzer, blush, and highlight - but these days, my favorite bronzers and blushes are cream formulations. For the eyes, I think all you need is a little sweep of mascara and/or liner depending on what you’re into. To really make them pop and elevate your look, I like to go in with a neutral eyeshadow to give the eyes more definition and make myself look more put together. And for the finishing touch, all you need is your favorite lipstick. I feel like any color goes and your glam can be a great way to let your personality shine through. These are the products I use: REVLON - Photoready Candid Glow Moisture Glow Anti-Pollution Foundation MAKE UP FOR EVER - Ultra HD Self-Setting Concealer MARC JACOBS BEAUTY - Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara FENTY BEAUTY - Match Stix Matte Skinstick – for a natural-looking contour, I like to warm the product up on the back of my hand and then I pick it up from there with an angled bronzer brush. MERLE NORMAN - Cheek Crayon - like with the contour stick, I recommend applying creme blushes to your hand first and picking it up from there. This gives you more control when you apply it and really helps you build it up to that natural-looking flush. I also love to add a little to my eyes to sub in for eyeshadow. Charlotte Tilbury - Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder – if you're on the oilier side like me, I've found that you need to apply this powder all over and do so about 2-3 times. It's a little annoying, but it creates such a gorgeous glow that you really look airbrushed and it's totally worth it. PHYSICIANS FORMULA - Butter Highlighter – make sure you dab the excess off or you’ll look ~crazy~ glowy. I learned this the hard way. Charlotte Tilbury - Matte Revolution Lipstick

DRUGSTORE GEM: FLAWLESS CONCEALER
DRUGSTORE GEM: FLAWLESS CONCEALER
REVLON - Photoready Candid Antioxidant Concealer in 005 Fair This is a hidden gem in the drugstore. For sure. It is high coverage, but lightweight and natural looking on the skin. It doesn’t dry out my skin or cling to dry patches (as some high coverage concealers do). There are so many shades to choose from and it’s inexpensive! I highly recommend it to people who are looking for a concealer that will give a good amount of coverage that still looks like skin. It doesn’t feel heavy and I’m able to wear it under my eyes without setting it! I also use this to pinpoint conceal breakouts and scars and it works amazingly!!! ✨

{empty} CLINIQUE - Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ I have a soft spot for this moisturizer because I started my skincare journey with Clinique. My skin started getting dry in my teens (I have combination sensitive skin), and I turned to my mom for help, who recommended Clinique. This was perfect for my teen self: affordable, great value and gets the job done! It has a very light texture (hence the “lotion” in the name) and is perfect for combination skin! The only problem is it’s a little bit stinky - totally bearable, but it’s not ideal. I would HIGHLY recommend this product, and have gotten a lot of my friends into it 🥰

Krave - Great Barrier Relief Great Barrier Relief is a creamy skin-soothing serum that restores our damaged barrier while evening out complexion. • • • Tamanu Oil is the key ingredient (and yeah the smell took me a while to get used to but I don’t even notice it anymore!) This is an oil that has skin-regenerative properties and back in the days it was actually used to heal wounds. This can help with hyperpigmentation or even substitute a retinol or vitamin C. I use this day and night!

YTTP Superberry Hydrate and Glow Dream Mask
YTTP Superberry Hydrate and Glow Dream Mask
The Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate and Glow Dream Mask was easily my favorite product of 2019. I just recently finished it and need to repurchase because it was the best thing my face has ever experienced. This is an overnight moisturizing mask that contains squalane, vitamin c, and hyaluronic acid. It’s meant for any skin type but is probably best suited for dry skin as it is a fairly heavy cream. It is meant to hydrate and brighten skin as you sleep through these ingredients. The texture is a fairly thick cream that has a slightly oily feel to it. It feels soft when you apply it to your skin. This is one of the first non drugstore skincare products I tried because my skin was extremely dry last year. I have used this product for about 8 months (one jar seems to last forever!) and have struggled to even want to try anything else! It’s so moisturizing and hydrating, and I wake up with really soft glowy skin. It’s been a miracle for my dry skin and has saved me a lot of pain. I recommend this to everyone asking for a good night moisturizer because it works so well for me and I have never had an issue with it. No breakouts, no irritation, just smooth soft skin. It has a light fruity scent to it which makes it so nice to use. It makes me happy when I smell it! Clearly from the pictures, it was a well loved product and I can’t wait to order more. This is definitely 5/5 stars for me! YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask

PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator I love this product so much. It is definitely holy grail status for me. I go through this like water. I have dry/acne prone skin and this helps even my texture as well as get rid of those pesky pimples. All without drying my skin out! I never want to be without this product! 💚😍 PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Niacinamide Booster I really enjoyed this niacinamide booster. The consistency is nice and light, it almost feels like water. Which makes it absorb into the skin quickly. I loved the way it felt and how it was helping lighten my pigmentation, BUT I feel like it is so overpriced. Especially considering, you don’t even get a full ounce of product. If it were more in the twenty dollar price range, I would have repurchased! 🤷🏼‍♀️

“Clean,” they say...
“Clean,” they say...
I’ll be honest, I was really hoping this product would deliver. I was looking for something to help with my dullness and hyperpigmentation and came across this product. I tested it out for two months every night, and my skin became increasingly sensitive. Now, usually I have a high tolerance to acids, so I found my skins sensitivity... odd. When I looked into it, the ingredient list revealed what was causing my irritation. Irritating “natural” ingredients such as mandarin peel oil, orange flower oil, grapefruit peel oil, tangerine peel oil, fragrance, and limonene. Essential oils are known to be huge irritants and the fact that Ren labels themselves as “clean” and “natural” but puts citrus (possibly the MOST irritating essential oils) into their products is just disappointing. This was the first product I have tried from Ren and due to my experience with this product, I will not be buying any more unless they make changes to their formulas. Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Sodium Lactate, Lactic Acid, Heptyl Glucoside, Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, Triethyl Citrate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Salix Nigra (Willow) Bark Extract, Benzoic Acid, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Flower Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Peel Oil, Heptanol, Parfum* (Fragrance), Limonene
