CeraVe Cleanser TRUTH! By an esthetician
So I’m a licensed esthetician, a skincare professional, and I am very picky about ingredients. Because why settle for something a little bad when you can have something that is amazing? Now that doesn’t mean natural is always better, by any means, but there is some really bad and gunky skincare out there! For example, CeraVe, sorry I’m not a fan. It’s definitely not the worst but it isn’t great and won’t really do anything great for your skin. There’s better out there and yes for an affordable price. So I’m going to break down every ingredient in their foaming facial cleanser so you can see what I mean, then I will recommend some great alternatives. -Water -Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine - surfactant, can be irritating on very sensitive skin. -Glycerin - humectant, can be drying in dry climates, needs moisture in the air or on the surface of the skin to work correctly. -Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate - surfactant, can be irritating and drying, same as any other SLS. -Peg-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate - thickener, microplastic, not necessary, no benefit, bad for the environment, can potentially contain toxic ethylene oxide, in my opinion causes products to stop working after some time. -Niacinamide - tightens the elasticity of the skin to make pores appear smaller, balances oil, in some cases can irritate acne and make it worse. -Peg-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides - emollient, unnecessary, microplastic again with the same risks. -Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate - mild surfactant. -Propylene Glycol - humectant, often drying and irritating. -Ceramide Np, Ceramide Ap, Ceramide Eop - building blocks of the skin’s barrier, good! -Carbomer - emulsifier and thickener, microplastic, no benefit. -Methylparaben - preservative, potentially irritating and potential hormone disrupter. -Sodium Chloride - salt, binding agent, can be irritating near eyes. -Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate - surfactant, can cause other irritating ingredients to be more irritating since it is a penetration enhancer. -Cholesterol - natural in skin barrier, stabilizer and emollient. -Disodium Edta - penetration enhancer, when there’s bad ingredients it pushes them deeper in the skin. -Propylparaben - preservative, can be irritating and potentially a hormone disrupter. -Citric Acid - aha to help smooth skin texture, can be irritating to some. -Tetrasodium Edta - penetration enhancer, when there’s bad ingredients it pushes them deeper in the skin. -Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid - hydrates deep in the skin, can be drying in dry climates, needs moisture in the air or on the surface of the skin to work correctly. -Phytosphingosine - natural in skin barrier, holds moisture in. -Xanthan Gum - thickening agent. So you can see, it’s really not amazing. It’s right there in the ingredients and ingredients don’t lie. CeraVe’s products only get worse from here. Don’t hate me y’all, hate the brand. It’s up to you if you want to continue to use it but I would recommend these other basic cleanser all under $20.
