Retinol: The Jack-of-all-trades
I remember reading somewhere a year or two ago that if your 20’s are about making sure you wear sunscreen, then your 30s should be incorporating Retinol. And to be fair, I was very skeptical that it was so “amazing” in helping anti-aging. But here I am writing this to admit I am a full advocate for Retinol. Let’s dive into why! WHAT IS RETINOL? Retinol - a Vitamin A derivative- is a power antioxidant. We consume Vitamin A daily in our food (think animal protein, eg. Salmon; as well as dark leafy greens and other vegetables). But does this translate to noticeable skin care benefits? In short, not really. At least not as noticeably as when it is applied directly to your skin. You can find retinoids both over-the-counter (OTC) and with prescription. The main difference between them is the concentration and type of retinoids- prescriptions tend to be much stronger. OTC retinoids come in 3 main forms; Retinyl palmitate, Retinaldehyde, and Retinol. Also the OTC retinoids are less likely to irritate your skin. WHY IS RETINOL SO GREAT? The reason it’s so great once you hit your 30s is because of its ability to help regenerate your skin’s foundation. Retinoids (the broader family that Retinol pertains to) work to increase both collagen and the rate at which cells turnover. Collagen helps keep skin plump, so you target fine lines and wrinkles and well as larger pores (all signs of aging). Meanwhile, cell turnover helps clear away dead skin cells exposing fresh cells. This helps with skin imperfections like hyperpigmentation, dark spots and even acne! WHO SHOULD USE IT?
Originally, it was derived to treat acne. It’s ability to turn over cells, combined with its inhibition of sebum production it makes it an awesome addition to those who suffer from acne.
Anyone who has signs of sun damage (🙋🏻♀️this girl), it helps fade the dark spots and even our skin tone.Maybe skip this if you have really sensitive skin. Retinol can be harsh on skin and cause irritation. WHEN/HOW TO USE IT? For a long time I thought you could only use retinol at night because it would degrade under the sun. But recently I read an article that said it’s integrity is kept in tact under high grade SPF. But in my particular case, I still only use it at night. My routine (works well for me):
After I cleanse, exfoliate, and tone, I will take 2 pumps of PAULA'S CHOICE - Resist Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum
I apply all over my face and down my neck, being gently around the eye area. Then I wait for it to absorb (takes about 3-5 minutes).
Sometimes I will finish my routine there, and others I will then apply a sleeping mask.RESULTS: I have one particularly awful dark spot that’s been lingering for about 6 months, and I only saw major improvements once I began using this serum. Disclaimer: Retinol can cause irritation if you use too much of it (either in frequency or concentration). ✌🏼💕

LadyDiDid you find this serum oily? Did you only use it at night?

Alicia_LuciaI do only use it at night, I tend to only involve retinol products in my night routine. However, that’s not to say you can’t use it in the daytime (with high SPF sunscreen). As for this product itself, it applies a little oily but quickly absorbs and leaves your skin conditioned but not greasy. Which honestly, was shocking since oils don’t tend to do that for me. Hope that helps💕

My top 3 fav products for oily skin
1. ORIGINS mega-mushroom relief & resilience soothing treatment lotion I had cystic acne all over my chin, and this product helped me so much. It calmed my skin, reduced redness, and helped keep my skin from feeling raw and dehydrated from acne products I was using to treat my pimples. I just pour a little in my hands (after cleansing before moisturizer) and gently pat it on my skin. Its a must have for me in my skincare and I use it whenever my skin is acting up. I love using this because it helps my other actives absorb well into the skin, very nice and soothing! I used it immediately after cleansing and before anything else by pouring a small amount into my hand and then patting it into the skin. Lasts forever the travel size has lasted me for months using almost daily, a little goes a long way! 2. SKINCEUTICALS resveratrol B E Iv'e been using this for three years now and i have to say it does make my skin look amazing when i wake up from putting it on the following night. It supposedly is suppose to slow down aging? Im not sure if its doing that but im hoping it is. It's hard to tell giving the fact i moisturize everyday, wear sunscreen and have been doing this since i was 21. Im 24 1/2 and i look 20 with no crows feet in sight yet. I was only using the daytime products and then incorporated the night time products. I like this product because it is light but I feel like it hydrates my skin. It spreads easily and you don't need a lot of the product if applying it last to your regimen. This gives my skin exactly what it needs for nighttime nourishment and restoration. I follow up with Retinol and a moisturizer and wake up with clear, bright, smooth skin. This stuff is worth every penny! 3. SKINCEUTICALS phloretin CF I started using the Skinceuticals Phloretin CF upon recommndation from my facial esthetician, who had recommended it for daily use to minimize acne scarring and uneven skin tones. I definitely notice a difference when I don't use this serum. Gentle on skin and safe to use daily - I apply after misting and before applying moisturizer/sunscreen. It's pricey but one bottle will last you a while. I have previously used every vitamin C I could find. Many have irritated my sensitive or were not as effective as this bottle. I was hesitant to spend so much on a single product, but glad I splurged. I will continue to buy this product because it has drastically cleared my acne prone skin, even skin tone and helped with my textured. It does have a weird smell but nothing off putting. This product is worth the price. I have only been using for a few weeks and notice a big improvement in the evenness of my skin tone. I have used similar products by other brands that felt too oily, however, this serum does not feel too heavy on my face.
A-Passioni by Drunk Elephant❤️
❤️This is A-Passioni Retinol Cream by Drunk Elephant. It is meant to increase skin cell turnover which helps with fine lines and breakouts. 🐘I have sensitive combo skin with hormonal breakouts and WOW. Although this is a strong retinol and did give me some peeling at first, this is such a game changer. 💕I find this helped me get rid of a lot of acne scars as well as decreased my breakout healing time. It also prevents breakouts from happening for me. ☀️The key to this is to incorporate small amounts very slowly and build your way up to regular use. This can cause peeling and skin purging for a few weeks but it is worth it! I’m seeing parts of my face clear that I haven’t seen that way in probably a year or two. 🐘I use with a lot of hydrating products afterwards including a moisturizer and facial oil. I find this also pairs nicely with occasional exfoliation. 💕This has a ton of ingredients in it (I mean a TON) so that’s why I’m giving it 4 rather than 5 stars because there’s no way they are all necessary. I would repurchase though! DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni Retinol Cream

Omega+ Serum: Hit or Miss?
The product I’ll be talking about today is PAULA'S CHOICE - Omega + Complex Serum So let’s get to it! What is it? - A superfood serum for your skin with omega fatty acids that strengthen skin's surface with the essential nutrients it needs to be healthy, hydrated and visibly strong. - Available in 1oz for $37, or travel size (0.17oz) for $8. (PC offers 15% off when you sign up for emails, plus they frequently have sales) What’s in it? - Concentrated levels of omega fatty acids help replenish dull, dehydrated skin, revive a beautifully smooth, supple feeling, plus visibly soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. - This serum also contains skin-identical ceramides and hydrating ingredients to visibly improve skin’s health. How to use- - Apply 1-2 pumps onto face and neck. For optimal results, use AM and PM. For daytime, follow with a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater. My review- - I have been using this serum for almost a month. I have dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin. - The serum has a milky, creamy consistency. It has a light, ceramide-like scent. I apply two pumps onto my face AM and PM after my toner and before my moisturizer. It spreads easily onto the skin and absorbs at a medium pace. - My experience with this serum thus far has been pretty lackluster. There hasn’t been any results that make me think, “oh that’s definitely the omega+ serum!” It doesn’t make my skin noticeably softer or smoother. I will say that the one time I chose not to put it on, my moisturizer stung a little, so maybe the serum acts as a barrier to decrease sensitivity? I haven’t had any negative results, which is why I gave it 4 stars. It is pretty expensive, and with not having any noticeable positive effects, I won’t be repurchasing this. My plan is to try Krave’s Great Barrier Relief serum after I finish this one! - This serum was a miss for me ❌ Source- - https://www.paulaschoice.com/omegaand-complex-serum/213.html

CLINIQUE Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C 10% This product provides fresh vitamin C, and it has only seven days to keep fresh after activation. The color will turn brown after seven days due to normal Vitamin C oxidation. It smells sour, and the using experience is not good too. My face feels stinging after applying this product, but that feeling will disappear after around 20 seconds. The official using description is mixing two drops with your moisturizer AM and PM to power up your regular skincare routine. For this using amount, the product is way too much for seven days of use. So I use more product than the recordation and also put it on the neck and hands. The result is notable, it reduced the acne marks and brightened my skin, but the overall using experience is not good. Recommend to normal, combination, and oily skins, not the one for dry and sensitive skin. CLINIQUE - Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C 10%

OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum
It smells like a big orange! The bottle is matte clear glass look, delicate and straightforward. The serum is clear and fluid, lightweight, and easy to absorb by the skin. And it won’t disturb the next step of my skincare. It can use day and night, but I usually put it in my night skincare routine. Because VC product is easy to oxidation, and the sun will accelerate the oxidation process. You need to apply more or stronger sunscreen to anti-oxidation. After two weeks of use, I can feel the changes in my skin. It looks a little bit brighter and smoother, and it doesn’t cause me breakouts. So I think this is mild and good for sensitive and acne skin. #OLEHENRIKSEN - Truth Serum[products]#[FiveStars]
COSRX - Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence . Essences are used to help prime your skin for better absorption of serums and other moisturizing products that come after. . 🐌 The @cosrx Snail Mucin Power Essence is made out of 96% snail mucin which is snail secretion filtrate, aka snail slime. Don’t worry, it’s not as slimy as you are imagining. It is slightly tacky but quickly smooths out as you massage your face with the product. It sometimes produces a brief milky-like emulsion whenever my face is still slightly wet from my toner or when I apply a very liquidy type serum. . Although @cosrx uses lab-grown snails, they collect the filtrate without aggravating or stimulating the snails. They allow the snails to sit over a mesh net in the dark space and let the snails leave their mucin behind as they naturally move around their environment. The mucin is then processed to stabilize it and make it appropriate for skincare use. . I’ve been using this product for 2.5 months and I feel that it has helped boost the effects of my other skincare products in terms of hydration, fading hyperpigmentation, evening out skin texture, etc. I feel that this product is good for all skin types. It’s fragrance free so it should be ok for those with sensitive skin unless of course, you’re allergic to snail mucin. . Snail mucin has a multitude of benefits so it’s a great ingredient to have in your skin care products. . 🌟Evens skin tone. 🌟Fades hyperpigmentation (includes acne scars but not melasma and sunspots). 🌟Hydrates (it has natural HA) and therefore, helps smooths fine lines and wrinkles as it keeps the skin plump. 🌟Fights off acne causing bacteria because of its antimicrobial properties. 🌟Prevents breakouts by exfoliating skin, sloughing off dead skin cells and unclogging pores (it has natural glycolic acid). 🌟Gives skin a more radiant look. . Do you use essences? Have you used this product? Let me know your thoughts 😃
