[Clearance Bin Win] Another Hidden Gem
[Clearance Bin Win] Another Hidden Gem
Second round of my Clearance Bin Win series: Murad - Pore Rescue Skin Smoothing Polish Since stores are opening back up here in Toronto, I’ve been able to begin my bargain hunting once again. This time, I was in a Marshall’s and saw this little guy sitting in a small clearance bin completely untouched. If you’ve read some of my other posts, then you are aware that I am a sucker for a good exfoliator (I’ve got an exfoliation 101 for those who want more info). This one did not disappoint! Let’s get down to the review and start with THE GOOD STUFF; Tightened my pores: Witch Hazel and Cinnamon extract both act as astringents which shrink pores and make skin appear smoother. No Irritation: Jojoba Esters work not only as the scrub beads but also act as an emollient. The beads are not harsh and I find it’s a good balance of scrub to polish when using this. No over powering fragrances: this is a huge deal for people with sensitive skin, like myself. THE NOT-SO-GOOD STUFF; Price: While I found this full sized tube for $13CAD at Marshall’s, it normally runs $46 CAD. To me, that’s a bit too pricey for a physical exfoliator. Took a few tries to see any kind of difference. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes new products allow me to see immediate results. This just wasn’t one of them 🤷🏻‍♀️ How I use this product (works well for me); In the shower (I like that the steam opens up my pores), after I cleanse, I will get about half a dime size amount on my hands. Gently massage over face in circular motion to avoid harsh strokes. Rinse away with warm water I repeat this about 2-3 times a week, and I haven’t noticed it’s too harsh. My other physical exfoliators I’ve only been able to use once a week at most, so I’m actually super impressed! Overall, I was already a fan of Murad as a brand, but I do really like this exfoliator. Would I pay full price for it? I’m not sure, probably not. BUT if you’re in the market for a good physical exfoliator that’s not too harsh, I would say give this one a shot! I would love to hear about anyone else’s hidden gem finds in sale bins!! ✌🏼

DIY: At-home Mani!
DIY: At-home Mani!
My nails (pre-COVID) sucked. I had to wear bio-gel nails because of how much they would break. But when things closed, it forced me to change my routine (for the better). To be completely honest, my nails look better now than they ever did before so I might keep my own at-home routine going indefinitely! S T E P S : 1. NAIL SOAK: I finally found a use for all those facial cleansers that my skin simply couldn’t handle! I put a few pumps into a bowl with warm water to soak (and soften) the nails and cuticles. I leave each hand for about 3-5 minutes. NUXE - Rêve De Miel Face and Body Ultra-Rich Cleansing Gel 2. CUTICLE CARE: as a first step I will grab a cuticle pusher (got mine off of amazon for under $7), and push all the cuticle down to expose more nail bed. Then if there is a lot of excess cuticle skin (and some hang nails) I grab my cuticle nipper and gently trim those pieces off. 3. NAIL FILING: I usually won’t cut my nails unless I am losing some serious length (broken nail for example). I instead opt for nail filing with a medium grit (180 grit to be exact). I like to change up my nail shape depending on my mood or colour choice for that week too! Not sure what grit is? Don’t worry, it’s something I had to look up at first before purchasing too 😉 The grit is how course the nail file is. So, for example you will use a much lower grit for acrylic nails, and then increase the number depending on how thick your nails are. For very thin or brittle nails, I would suggest something 240 or higher. 4. OIL: CND - Vinylux Rescue Rxx Treatment I LOVE this product for my nails. I spread it around the nails beds then massage the excess onto the entire nail. I leave it for a few minutes to absorb before continuing. The keratin strengthens, while the jojoba oil in this product is fantastic for moisturizing! In my case I had really, really brittle nails that peeled easily. It didn’t matter what I used, they peeled or even got white spots. Since I began using this, I haven’t had this issue. 5. GROWTH TREATMENT: Nail HQ - Growth Sally Hansen - Nail Rehab I use both of these products interchangeably. I prefer the NAIL HQ, I find that my nails grew noticeably faster when I used this product regularly. The best part about this specific product is I can regularly find it at a Marshall’s for half price (so I don’t feel guilty over using it). 6. MOISTURIZE: THE BODY SHOP - Hemp Hand Protector I worked at The Body Shop when I was in College and honestly got hooked on this hand cream. It’s been my tried and true since 2008! The smell isn’t my fav, but it’s not awful. You also don’t need a lot of it to do the trick! If I recommended one thing to add to your routine it would be the CND RescueRXX, hands down. Nothing short of miraculous! Hope this inspires some DIY! ✌🏼

The Crowd-Pleaser that Disappointed
The Crowd-Pleaser that Disappointed
I wanted to love this SO badly. All the comments and reviews gushed about how life-changing this product was. I was already a big fan of the Truth Serum, and had used the C-Rush brightening cream before (but felt it was a little ‘meh’). I also know that my skin can be tricky, so I ordered the miniature size to test it out for a few weeks. Overall, I would give OLE HENRIKSEN - Banana Bright Eye Crème maybe 2.5/5 stars. I know, I know: how could I?! But hear me out. Claims to fame: Brightening Hydrating Reduces Finelines and Wrinkles Let’s start with some positives: Smells like orange candy or a creamsicle! This could be a negative to some, but the smell reminded me of summer, so I liked that. Secondly, I liked the texture. It was a bit thicker than most eye creams, but I love thicker eye creams in general. Finally, I did notice that my under eyes were a bit brighter with the first use! I have to say that the peachy-orange tint really does wonders to color-correct the purple-blue tones. So, why 2.5 stars? Firstly, I found this cream never actually absorbed into my skin. It just sort of sat on my skin, even after 15-30 minutes. Additionally, I found it to be greasy. Since it didn’t absorb quickly, when I would look in the mirror it looked like I had put olive oil around my eyes. I also noticed that since it didn’t absorb into my skin, it began to settle into the fine lines under my eyes. I could see product in the crevices even after attempting to gently press it in. And the final straw, before I called it quits, was that it irritated my skin so badly. For the first few days, I didn’t really think much of it. I felt that the tingling might just be how this product feels, but after about 9 days it got so much worse. On the final day I used it, immediately after applying it on fresh clean skin (just to be sure it wasn’t reacting with other products), the outside corner of my eyes felt like they were on fire. It was only a bit red but it felt unbearable. I re-washed my face and ended up having to apply some aloe to the area to calm it down. Normally, I would assume it was a reaction to the fragrance in this since the smell is so strong, but I use other products in this line without this reaction. So I’m still trying to figure out what happened. A quick search on google and reddit led me to a thread where people expressed similar reactions to this product: so sensitive-skin beauty buffs beware! I really wish I could say this product lived up to the hype, but I think this is on my no-fly list for sensitive skin ✌🏼

DIY Lip Scrub: quick and delicious!
DIY Lip Scrub: quick and delicious!
In my previous post (https://t.cherie.com/J1VFRCu/) I mentioned I used a lip scrub that I make for myself. It’s not fancy, but I found lip scrubs to be the easiest thing to make at home and then I can customize it to my liking! If you’re feeling creative, I would advise you google “diy lip scrub” followed by favourite smell or ingredient and there’s tons of posts with suggestions. Then begin experimenting to find your perfect formula! Lip scrubs are made of 3 main parts: the exfoliant, the moisturizing medium, and the scent. Super simple right? Here’s my recipe: 2 TSP SUGAR: this works as the exfoliant. In this batch I used plain white sugar since it’s fine, but you can use a combo of white and raw turbine sugar if you want more textures. 3/4 TSP Coconut oil or olive oil: up to you, I found either work really well. More of a “what do you have laying around” ingredient. 1/4 TSP Manuka Honey: another hydrating medium. Doesn’t have to be any fancy honey, whatever you’ve got works! 4 drops Essential Oil: Peppermint is this batch’s scent, but I also use Coconut essential oil/extract interchangeably because I love the smell. I find my lips feel more plump afterwards with the Peppermint. Optional ingredient: 1/4 TSP Jojoba Oil: this just makes it a little more runny and I prefer subbing in a bit of this for extra added moisture. Super easy, and very customizable. Plus these ingredients are usually things you may already have lying around- ok, maybe not jojoba oil haha, but it’s optional and not a bad investment since it’s very easy to incorporate for other things (hair and skin). Let me know if you give this a try, or if you’ve got your own DIY scrub that you love and recommend! ✌🏼

Show your lips a little L-O-V-E!
Show your lips a little L-O-V-E!
I don’t think caring for your lips gets the hype it deserves. For me, I didn’t really think about my lips too much until I burned them really badly back in 2015 while on vacation. I began reading up on sun damage for lips, and what signs of aging for lips looked like, I started a more conscientious routine. WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR LIPS AS WE AGE? Like the rest of your skin, as we age, our lips lose their plump youthful look. However, the skin on your lips is actually much thinner than the rest of your face (by about half as many layers - that’s why they appear pink!). Here are a few signs of lip aging, that while inevitable, can definitely be slowed with proper care: Dry lips: we tend to lose the ability to create natural moisture for lips as we age. So they will appear drier and drier as we get older. Thinner lips: this one sucks big time. But as we get older the depletion of collagen makes your upper lip thin out (and flatten). Another unfortunate factor if you’ve already got thin lips to begin with, you’ll begin to notice a difference a little earlier than those with bigger lips. Sun Damage: applying sunscreen to your lips is not really something most people think about as frequently as the rest of your face or body. But its SO important to keeping your lips youthful in appearance. Photo aging on lips makes them darker, and also blurs the line between your lips and surrounding skin. Think of it like little bits of patch work blending both skin colours. Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Sometimes referred to as “smokers’ lines” these are the sharp lines that can be seen when you pucker your lips. Even if you’ve never smoked, these begin to make an appearance in your late 20s/early 30s. This is a result of dehydration, sun damage, and puckering your lips (for me, drinking with straws 😂). HOW TO PREVENT LIP DAMAGE? SPF lip products. Always. I rotate what I use, but since I spend a lot of time outside running I like to use something more affordable due to how fast I go through it. sun bum - Original SPF 30 Sunscreen Lip Balm Key Lime is my fav right now. It smells awesome and I find it very hydrating. Also it’s like $3-4, so I stock up in the summer months and carry it with me everywhere. Moisturize: This doesn’t mean only products, it also means drink more water! I’m a culprit for over doing the caffeine, but I find when I skip the water, my lips are a pretty good indicator. Aside from this I use LANEIGE - LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask not only at night, but when I’m just sitting around the house and need a little extra hydration. BURT’S BEES - Strawberry Lip Balm and fresh - Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 also in the rotation! Exfoliate: like the rest of your skin, clearing dry/dead skin cells works wonders to make them appear more plump! I use a DIY scrub, post here: https://t.cherie.com/J1VBSo1/ Happy lip loving✌🏼

Hidden Gem in the Clearance Bin!
Hidden Gem in the Clearance Bin!
PREFACE: I’ve decided that I’m going to start a series about all the random products I discover on mega sales, or clearance bins. I think there’s a lot of value in finding the hidden gems that maybe don’t get any hype. Plus, I love a good deal as much as the next gal! Rarely do I find absolute gems in clearance bins: however, this is definitely one of those times where I lucked out! VICHY - Pureté Thermale One Step Face Cleanser for Sensitive Skin Overall, I’m giving this guy a 4.5/5 I normally don’t buy combo items, not because I think they are less effective, but because I’ve been blindly loyal to my makeup remover and toner(s) for a long time. However, my curiosity was totally sparked when I saw an attendant at Shoppers Drug Mart (Canada’s Walgreens or CVS equivalent) drop this bottle in the clearance bin in front of my eyes. WHAT IS IT? This product claims to be a Cleanser, Toner, and Makeup Remover all-in-one. It’s more on the milky side, but the texture is a bit thicker than most cleansing milks. Since it’s made for sensitive skin, it’s relatively unscented (which I love since fragrance tends to be an irritant). HOW DO YOU USE IT? I will usually use this in the mornings. I don’t like to wash my face too frequently because it dries out quickly, so replacing my full face wash with this works really well for me in the morning right before I exercise (full face wash comes after I’m done sweating my butt off). Although this product is advertised as a cleanser, you apply it similar to how you would a toner: I take a cotton pad (mine have a smooth side and a textured side) and place a dime-size amount on the textured/rough side of the pad. Then I gently slide the cotton pad down the T-zone and across my face and neck to get rid of anything that might be sitting on my skin. It dries very very quick and leaves no film on your skin. Afterwards, I simply apply my sunscreen and off I go on my run. It’s not the be-all-end-all of cleansers but it’s definitely worth a try if you’re looking for an alternative type of cleanser. I got a 10oz bottle for $7, which is unreal for such a great brand. Normal price is about $20 for 7oz, so still not a bad deal whatsoever. ✌🏼 Edit: the reason it was on clearance was because this size was discontinued, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the product!

Super skincare combos!! ❤️
Super skincare combos!! ❤️
I keep this chart handy when I have certain skin issues! My favorite pairing on this chart is...... Retinol + Niacinamide 💞💞 These two were absolutely made for each other!! Niacinamide can help reduce the redness and the irritation many experience when using retinols. Niacinamide can also enhance retinols therapeutic effects!! Here is how to make the most out of this match! Use niacinamide twice a day for a couple of weeks prior to starting treatment with retinol. Continue to use niacinamide as a ‘buffer’ during treatment with retinol. Niacinamide and retinol can be used together with a five-minute gap between application but are likely to be just as effective if you use them at separate times of the day. If you are applying niacinamide and retinol together at the same time then it is best to apply the niacinamide FIRST if it is in the form of a serum or LAST if it is in the form of a moisturizer. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily when using retinol (you should be using sunscreen daily anyway). If you aren’t using sunscreen honestly there isn’t really a point to try and combat anti-aging etc. If you are new to retinols, it’s best to start by using once a week and you can work up to more from there. Especially if you have sensitive skin ❤️ What’s your favorite pairing from this chart? 🤔

Niacinamide: My Favourite Ingredient
Niacinamide: My Favourite Ingredient
Niacinamide is one of my all-time favourite ingredients and it’s really not talked about enough. Niacinamide is proving to be a power player in skincare, managing to soothe inflammation, reduce redness, control oil production, minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, even skin tone, improve texture, improve the appearance of fine lines, and improve skin radiance. It’s truly such a multi-faceted ingredient and I recommend it in all routines! Here are my experiences with some popular niacinamide serums: • The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% was my first niacinamide serum. It played a huge role in transforming my skin from oily to normal/combo. It also helped tons with my acne... until it didn’t. The zinc in this formulation is hit-or-miss, being a hit for most! But I found myself in the small population of the miss category, my skin reacting poorly to prolonged use. I still recommend folks wanting to try niacinamide on a budget give it a try at $5.90USD for 30mL and $10.60 for 60mL. •THE inkey LIST - Niacinamide Oil Control Serum came next, its $6.99/30mL price tag making it a good zinc-free budget alternative. This product utilizes niacinamide in a base of glycerin, squalane, and hyaluronic acid, focusing on light hydration alongside the touted oil control. The lip does get a bit clogged with crystallized product, but the applicator is convenient for travel. I enjoyed this serum, but the ingredient list is a bit basic. • PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Niacinamide Booster , at $44.00 per 20mL... I was hesitant to purchase this serum. But I’ve got two back-ups of this serum on the way, if that says anything about how “worth it” it is. It helped reduce the appearance of the sebaceous filaments on my chin, forehead, and the bridge of my nose, plus I experience less irritation from altering my skin routine than I normally would... and I find my skin just feels bouncy after I apply this serum- perhaps an effect of the absolutely stacked INCI list! Whereas the other formulas are bare bones, PC packs in CoQ10, vitamin c, and allantoin, boosting its anti-aging and soothing properties. If you can afford it, I’d give it a try! Its pore-minimizing results alone will keep me repurchasing.
