MY FULL MANICURE KIT

avatar
AlexisA
Here’s my full manicure kit that I rely on whenever I do my nails and how I use them! I’m not a pro, but I have found a really good routine and method that works for me, so I hope this helps you! I've listed everything except nail polish. ✔️ Glass Nail File Glass nail files are so much better for nails than emery boards. They’re fine grain, but very effective for safely and quickly shaping nails. I can’t live without one! ✔️ Buffer This helps to smooth out any ridges in nails and lift any nail polish staining. However, don’t buff your nails too much otherwise you could thin them out and damage them. ✔️ Cuticle Oil Conditions nails and cuticles. So handy for strengthening nails and keeping cuticles from getting ragged. ✔️ Base Coat Helps nail polish last longer and strengthens nails. This one is non-negotiable! ✔️ Top Coat Helps nail polish last longer, dry quickly, and look shiny and professional. Another non-negotiable part of a manicure kit. ✔️ Cuticle Tools Perfect for gently pushing back cuticles, as well as wiping up any wet nail polish if application has been messy. ✔️Toe Separators Makes it super easy to paint the perfect pedicure! No more smudged toenails!

COOL TONED NAILS (PERFECT FOR SCORPIOS)
Here’s the thing as a Scorpio - everyone expects us to like black or super dark nails because we’re ~mysterious~ and spooky. Most Scorpios (including myself) also have a soft side and I like using my nail polish to express this. We’re also a little cold and standoffish, so I’ll go with a cool, but soft shade today - OPI Icelanded a Bottle of OPI It’s a cool-toned taupe-grey - it’s not a cute, sweet pink that might suit another star sign better. As always, I put on a coat of Duri Rejuvacote before two coats of polish, then Essie Gel Setter. This combination hasn’t let me down yet! Icelanded a Bottle of OPI is perfectly flawless in two coats and I’ve gotten up to two weeks of wear (especially with base and top coat) out of it. I like it better than gel since I can actually take it off whenever I want and just put it back on again (if I want!) I’m a practical Scorpio (I’ve outgrown having long nails) so I’ve painted my natural nails. I like to keep them at a natural, rounded shape. Just in case I have to help my friend bury a body or something… Just kidding! ;) duri - Rejuvacote 1 Nail Growth System OPI - Long Lasting Nail Polish Infinite Shine 2 essie - Gel Setter Top Coat

5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TOPCOAT
A good top coat is more than just clear nail polish! Tell me this—do you find your manicure always chips faster than you want it to? (I know, this makes gel manicures really tempting, but hear me out). 1) It makes your manicure last longer Nail polish top coat adds a glossy seal over the polish you’ve just put on, ensuring it doesn’t chip away as easily. 2) It helps your nails dry faster I don’t even consider a top coat these days if quick dry isn’t mentioned anywhere on the label. To put it simply, quick dry top coats work by literally solidifying faster, making bumps and nicks harder to make in the nail polish itself. 3) It can make your manicure look like gel Top coats add a more glossy finish and high shine to perfect nails, giving them the illusion of a thicker layer of polish that looks like gel. 4) It smooths any over application mistakes If you accidentally nick or smudge your nails, here’s no reason to stress—your perfect nails aren’t ruined! This is where the top coat comes in. It’ll smooth over and fill any tiny little nicks and bumps just enough so that they’re not noticeable, saving you from doing over your nails. 5) It makes your at-home nail art look pro It adds that finishing touch and makes everything look 100% better. Which top coat is best? A lot of people think that their nail polish chips because they’re using a cheap brand. The thing is, it doesn’t matter what brand of nail polish you use—if you’re using a good quality top coat and base coat, you can make ANY nail polish last (and look good!) for perfect nails. Here are my favourite top coats! Seche Vite Top Coat Seche - Vite Dry Fast Clear Top Coat Seche Vite Dry Fast top coat is a classic. There’s a good reason it comes so highly recommended—I don’t think I’ve ever had my nails look so much like gel before. However, it thickens very quickly and requires the Seche Restore brand thinner to use it again due to Seche Vite’s unique formula. Essie Good to Go essie - Good to Go Top Coat It dries quickly and super shiny, but doesn’t make nails look as gel-like as other top coats. However, it’s one that I relied on for a long time and I would happily recommend it. Essie Gel Setter Reviewessie - Gel Setter Top Coat It’s definitely similar to Good to Go, but to me has a little more plumping and a gel-like finish for nails. Sally Hansen Big Shiny Top Coat Sally Hansen - Big Shiny Top Coat I really, really liked the Sally Hansen Big Shiny Top Coat. It was Big, Shiny, and quick-drying—and easy to get and cheap. What’s not to love? So, what's the fastest way to dry nails again? Answer: with a top coat—so skip all those Pinterest hacks about putting your hands in iced water. Apply thin coats of nail polish, let it dry a little in between, and seal everything off with a good top coat (and your nails will probably look better and last longer than gel, too!) Here's to good manis and pedis ahead!

THREE TIPS FOR SALON-WORTHY NAILS
So here’s the thing - I get asked ALL THE TIME how much I paid to get my nails done. The kicker? I don’t pay to get them done - I’ve done my own nails for YEARS and I’ve perfected my technique for making them look like I got them done in the salon - even though they’re just regular nail polish. Here are my top three tips for perfect nails (no more mistakes) ➡️Sit at a table to do your nails You have GOT TO STOP trying to paint your nails while sitting on your couch or on the floor (unless you’re giving yourself a pedicure). Painting your nails while sitting at a table ensures that your hands are on a flat, stable surface so you have more control of the nail polish and are less likely to flood your cuticles, or look like a child tried to paint your nails. ➡️Always use top coat and base coat A quality top and base coat will make your nail polish look better and last longer. It’s honestly what matters more than the brand of polish you use - it will make dollar store, drugstore, or department store nail polish ALL look equally amazing and salon-worthy. Seche - Vite Dry Fast Clear Top Coat duri - Rejuvacote 1 Nail Growth System ➡️Don’t overload your brush with polish Trying to get a mani done quicker by painting a too thick layer on of polish is totally counter-intuitive. First, you’re more likely to do a messy paint job because you can’t control the polish and it will just go everywhere. Second, it’s going to take AGES to dry - much longer than thinner two coats of polish! These are my three top tips for salon-worthy nails - and they’ve never let me down! The shade of polish in the photo is Essie Van D’Go, a gorgeous peach shade. essie - Longwear Nail Polish

Favorite nail polish 💅🏻
These are the ones I use the most, ranging from affordable to a little more pricey. Essence shine last and go! These are only $1.99! They’re super affordable and they last a while. They come in 32 different colors on essence’s site. The colors are really pretty, I apply 2 coats and sometimes a top coat and they last me a couple weeks. essence - Shine Last & Go! Gel Nail Polish Sally Hansen insta dry nail color. These are $5.59 on Ulta’s site. There’s 48 colors and they’re super pretty. These also last about a couple weeks and dry quickly. Sally Hansen - Insta Dri Nail Color Essie nail lacquer. These are $9.00 on Ulta’s site as well. A little more pricey but not terrible. I think these are worth it. These have surprisingly lasted me 3 weeks with a top coat on. I wash dishes and use my hands a lot so these were great. essie - Longwear Nail Polish

EASY NAIL ART: GLITTER POLISH
I have an older but still gorgeous polish to show you today. HARE Pegasus is a gorgeous pale purple jelly polish with silver glitter throughout. I love how the glitter shows as white instead of silver because of the purple jelly base. I love using glitter nail polish because it's an easy way to have gorgeous nails at home. Here, I've done one coat over Essie Hello Marshmallow! essence - Shine Last & Go! Gel Nail Polish[] a pastel purple with slight shimmer. I like to layer over a similar base colour if I don't necessarily want the layered effect of multiple coats. If your glitter nail polish has a sheer colored base, one if my best tips is to layer it over an opaque polish of a similar color to make the glitter really pop against the base colour. I've topped it off with one layer of top coat, which completely smoothed over any glitter and gave a fantastic glassy finish. Top coat is a must anytime you do your nails, but especially with glitter nail polishes to avoid any glitter sticking out and for a smooth, glossy nail surface. If you really wanted to, you could apply two coats of top coat for a super smooth glossy finish if your nail polish has a lot of glitter.

I recently bought a ton of Floss Gloss nail polish and have her a bit too excited wanting to use them all! I initially wanted to do a 2-color French tip with this color but after watching it on my nail, it was soooo pretty I decided to let it rock on its own. FLOSS GLOSS - #WCW - Nail Polish this is the perfect chrome pink! I love that it’s a pretty blush but still has that edge. I topped it with Seche - Vite Dry Fast Clear Top Coat because it’s the best top coat. I also got FLOSS GLOSS - Gloss Topcoat but it’s not very good. It Chunks up on the nail way too easily, and the brush isn’t that great. Plus, on my precious abstract nails, it chipped after just 2 days :/

trying to perfect my at-home mani!
trying to perfect my at-home mani!
not yet comfy with the idea of salon services, so i’m learning to do my nails in this season! * products used * ORLY - Orly Base Coat & Top Coat this stuff is amazing!! i think that it is making a huge difference in the staying power for my at-home manis and pedis. OLIVE&JUNE - CDJ i want to love this product more. it’s a beautiful color - a creamy pink that works well with my skintone. the texture of the product is very thick though, and i don’t quite feel like it looks smooth. i could just be heavy-handed, and i’ll keep trying because i have been eyeing the nabela collection (so perfect for summer!). OLIVE&JUNE - Nail Polish Topcoat this is great! one of the nicer top coats that i have used. also very thick, and provides a good amount of shine. OLIVE&JUNE - Clean Up Brush maybe i’m just a sucker for cute products, but the acrylic handle and the cute logo just do it for me. i also feel very professional cleaning up my nails after painting them. please share at-home mani tips! 💅🏾 i’m always looking to get better. 🤗

At-home Mani ft. My Fave Polish Brands
At-home Mani ft. My Fave Polish Brands
So to be honest, I RARELY paint my nails these days and it’s been that way for years. I really struggle with painting my nails and having them chip within hours because then I pick it all off. I don’t even really own nail polish anymore for this reason...so literally these 3 pictured here are the only nail polishes I currently own😳 There are two brands of nail polishes that have come to be my favourites over the years though and that’s Essie and Essence. Essie IMO is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to drugstore nail polishes; they have SO MANY beautiful colours to choose from and I love that they often come out with seasonal or limited edition collections too. Also, the names of their polishes are always so cheeky and adorable! I find that Essie polishes hold up so much better than many others that I’ve tried and don’t chip quite as fast as other brands, especially when paired with one of their top coats. Overall, if I’m heading out to buy a nail polish you can pretty much guarantee it’ll be Essie. The other brand I really love is Essence; their polishes are extremely affordable (think like $3) and wear pretty well. The one I have is a gel formula and it’s a little more plush and shiny than the classic nail polish formula and then I also have a glitter by them because I am ALWAYS a fan of a glitter nail (or 3🤪). Essence doesn’t hold up quite as well as Essie IMO but they are still great polishes and at that price you can’t go wrong! This all being said, Quo (which is Shoppers Drug Mart’s beauty brand here in Canada) just relaunched all of their line + some new launches and their polishes look so cute so I may have to pick up a couple to try! What are you favourite nail polish brands? #CheriePartner

My go to Simple mani style
My go to Simple mani style
When it comes to nails I’m a simple girl. I never get them done professionally, I always do them myself. I also work in a hospital so having short clean nails is a must so I never keep my nails long. I start by trimming my nails with some clippers, then file in a rounded shape. Lately I’ve been using this sally Hansen top/bottom coat and while it’s OK it’s definitely not my favorite. I then follow with 2 coats of my chosen nail polish ( here I used Essie in shade “mooning”). After that dries I apply a top coat and let dry. To add some fun/pop I did a glitter accent nail on each hand. It was an ELF polish that I got in a gift set some time ago. Unfortunately this only lasted me about 3 days before major chipping happened. I chalk it up to the top/base coat not being the best.

Believe it or not, your nails need a 'primer'💅
Believe it or not, your nails need a 'primer'💅
If you do manicure frequently and found that your nails are becoming weak and brittle, it means your nails are damaged by nail polish. There is a layer of protective film on the surface of the nail. But if the way of manicure is improper or you apply nail polish too frequent, the efficacy of this protective film will be weakened, then the nail will be easier to get corroded. That’s why we should pay attention to nail care. Base coat is the best foundation for nail care. You may consider what is base coat and is it really necessary? Base coat for nail manicure can be regarded as primer for make up. Sometimes you may skip this step, but by taking this small but meaningful step, you’ll get stronger and longer-lasting manicure. With this extra layer between nail and polish, your manicure will be smoother, shiner and less easy to get chipped or cracked. Base coat can also protect your nails from getting stained by chemicals and dyes in polish. I recommend that all the girls who do manicure frequently and want to keep nails healthy and to get lasting manicure add a step of base coat before nail polish.  butter LONDON - Nail Foundation Priming Basecoat There is one base coat I like very much and want to share with you, that is Butter London Nail Foundation Priming Basecoat. It costs $18 a bottle. This base coat works well, and I quite like this brand in general.  Butter London is a professional nail brand which provides quality products for manicure enthusiasts. It believes a healthy manicure starts with healthy-looking nails. This base coat helps strengthen and smooth nails according to preventing nail staining and filling ridges in fingernails. I really like this base coat. It is a good coverage for nails and it dries quickly. By the way, its packaging is so cute!
